FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

O

ur history on Portola Road is decorated with strong relationships: families, both past and present, who have wholeheartedly supported the remarkable education and personal growth that has thrived on our campus since 1957. Priory’s influence extends beyond the students who grace our picturesque 50 acres; it leaves an indelible mark on all of us— faculty, staff, parents, alums, alum parents, and benefactors. Together, we breathe life into our mission: to help students live meaningful and balanced lives and to develop leaders who generously serve a world in need of their gifts. We draw strength from the enduring spirit of our Monks and the timeless wisdom of the Benedictine tradition, which has been our guiding light for over six decades and has shaped our world for nearly 15 centuries. Ultimately, our mission in Benedictine education is to guide our students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, achieved through learning, service, retreats, and nurturing their unique talents. It’s through your generous contributions of time, expertise, and resources that we can accomplish this mission. The students who call Priory home each year are the direct beneficiaries of your steadfast support.

Priory’s influence extends beyond the students who grace our picturesque 50 acres; it leaves an indelible mark on all of us. We owe our past, present, and future to you and everyone acknowledged in this annual report. Your commitment and dedication enrich our community and pave the way for the promising futures our students will create. Thank you for being integral members of the Priory family, your care, and your unwavering support. Always we begin again,

Patrick Ruff

FROM THE CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Priory Friends,

O

n behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors, I am excited to share with you the 2022-2023 academic year report. The Board is forever grateful for the support of our entire community: faculty, staff, parents, and friends of the Priory. It is your continued commitment to our school and mission that allows us to offer a comprehensive education to our students that honors our values. The 2022-2023 school year was a celebration in its simplicity, a return to normalcy. Our students were able to enjoy in full our beautiful campus and take advantage of our most valued traditions. They were able to forge their own paths at an academic institution that believes in the uniqueness of the individual while valuing the importance of a top-notch education. These past years have allowed all of us the opportunity to assess what matters most and we know that a supportive communities value cannot be overstated. How lucky are we, that Priory can offer that to us all? As a board, our responsibility is to look forward with an eye towards the future but also to look back. To build on the Benedictine tradition and values that our school’s philosophy is rooted in. It is our duty to honor the Priory’s mission in everything we do.

We cannot thank all of you enough for your gifts and we cannot overstate our indebtedness to our Founder’s Club members, giving leaders who pave the way with their generous contributions, allowing us to consistently plan for the future. We could not be who we are without all of your continued support. It is our tradition to value every student. We extend the same gratitude to you. We are better and stronger together. We are forever grateful for all of you. With gratitude,

Carolyn Putney Chair of the Priory Board of Trustees

ANNUAL FUND The most important, valuable, and tangible way to demonstrate support for Priory is through a gift to the Annual Fund. These essential, unrestricted gifts directly support every Priory student by bridging the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Priory education. Our community is small by design, so every gift is important. Every gift makes a difference. Priory’s vibrant culture of philanthropy is evidenced by Annual Fund support. During the 2022-2023 fiscal year, the Annual Fund reached $28 million in funds raised. We extend our deepest gratitude to those who gave and made achieving this ambitious goal possible. Thank you.

Robotics Competes and Perseveres Our robotics team had a tremendous year. We began the season with two new mentors, Clint Johns and alum Louis Stromeyer, along with several new team members. During the Jan-Feb build season, we not only built a robot, we also spent considerable time and energy training members on CAD, 3D print, machine parts, code, and design graphics. During our build season of January and February the team collectively spent 1,900 hours strategizing, prototyping, designing, fabricating, coding, and testing a robot to navigate this year’s competition. We competed at UC Davis in March, where we learned that our strategy had some hiccups to overcome. We decided to build our own custom swerve drive chassis, which has a lot of moving parts all needing a high degree of precision to make and to fit together. A majority of our build season went into this endeavor, with far less time to work on the rest of our robot strategy. UC Davis became less about a competition environment and more about Priory’s message “Always We Begin Again” as we tested, troubleshooted, and tweaked our swerve drive to get into tip top shape. We finished the event with a 3-70 record, and ranked 42/46. A short two weeks later, we were back competing at San Jose State University, and our swerve drive finally began to work as we had planned. The excitement was palpable as students saw the fruits of their labor finally paying off. Gameplay was far more straightforward at that point, and we were able to finish the event with a 6-5-0 record, and ranked 16/59. It was a huge success that was evident to all team members that hard work and dedication really do pay off. The Robotics team’s main goal is not to build robots to compete against other schools. We are a program that uses robots to build people so that they can serve a world in need of their gifts.

Grads Say Goodbye Once again, we spent our final week celebrating our graduates and recognizing their accomplishments. We are very proud of the class of 2023 and look forward to following their paths and witnessing how they choose to serve a world in need of their gifts. All of us who are a part of the Priory community will miss these young women and men. They have left their mark, woven into the fabric of the community, and in some way will always be here It is with great joy that we hold the memories of those celebrations: Graduation, Baccalaureate Mass and Senior Dinner. We are also very grateful to Priory parent Jeff Herman for donating his time and expertise to photograph these beautiful events.

Grandparents Seize the Day! On a beautiful morning in mid-November, students and their grandparents came together to enjoy a special lunch and the final matinee of the all-school play, “Puffs.” For many, this was their first experience visiting Priory. While campus is fairly placid on Sunday afternoons, Grandparents Day saw students treating their families to personalized tours of their classrooms, fields, and general hangouts. Visitors expressed their appreciation for the intimate feel of the event. Fr. Martin’s blessing was especially meaningful to those unaccustomed with the Benedictine tradition, and Patrick’s closing remarks expressed gratitude for the roles these grandparents have played in shaping our students throughout their lives. After we gathered for a lovely group photo and completed the campus tours, many families opted to see the play. What a wonderful showcase of our talented performers and technicians! We are grateful for all the volunteers, faculty, and staff who made this a truly special experience for our grandpanthers.

Dr. Bettina Love Energized and Inspired As part of our Black History Month celebration last January, Priory hosted Dr. Bettina Love in a riveting presentation on her work and vision for education. On January 24 in the Priory Gymnasium, Dr. Love addressed a crowd of 500, including 200 students from various schools like Sacred Heart, Menlo School, Castilleja, and Crystal Springs. As a Black History Month event, she spoke about the wisdom learned from Black Freedom Struggles, and how we can move through these divisive times with collective hope and liberation. Dr. Love followed-up her evening event by leading the entire Middle and Upper School in an assembly the next day, inviting our student body to consider how they could be agents of change. Through her “Hip Hop Civics Curriculum,” Dr. Love used music, film excerpts, and dance footage to offer our students compelling tools, frameworks, and insights into how they can advance equity and inclusion in their own lives and communities. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one student sharing, “The visit from Dr. Love made me feel energized and inspired,” while another expanded his reflections, saying “It was eye-opening, and she had a lot of really good takes that I’d never thought about before. She kept the audience really engaged and helped me think in new ways about anti-racism.” Dr. Love’s visit has already made a deep impact on our Priory community, supporting efforts for increased DEI student leadership, inspiring this year’s Professional Development theme [Grading for Equity], and invigorating the classroom experience to deepen student belonging. We are grateful for the experience and look forward to future events!

Athletic Success It was another great year for athletics, with participation at an all-time high. It was an especially successful winter with both the boys and girls basketball teams playing for a Central Coast Section championship. The boys took home their fifth title in the last eight years, and both teams advanced to the state playoffs. In the spring, the baseball team qualified for the CCS playoffs for the first time in school history! They won their first round game, advancing to the semi finals.
