On the Cover: This fountain, on a third-level patio, is a familiar campus landmark. It commemorates Suzanne Eyre, who created the beautiful trees, plantings and landscaping on the Priory campus with her personal involvement and support over some 45 years.
From the Headmaster The Priory community has many reasons for joy and much to celebrate as we complete our first year of the new millinneum and look ahead to our fiftieth anniversary. Academically, our students continue to amaze us with their enthusiasm, ability and achievement. As a group, their class work and test scores continue to impress. The number of students qualified for the most selective schools continues to increase. We have many individual success stories at all levels of achievement. As I’ve said before, when a teacher finds the right key to each student’s abilities, we don’t have to raise the performance bar—the student does it. Headmaster Tim Molak and Claire Socially, I see students busy and involved and motivated. Their after-school activities are Waterman, who received the 2001 positive and growth-enhancing. I believe our “sense of community” isn’t just Headmaster’s Award for a phrase because I see evidence before me. Younger students look to the older community service. ones as friends and role models, older students take on a challenge such as Model United Nations or the annual food drive or a sports team, and they go as far as they can in exercising their leadership and creative problelm-solving skills. Spiritually, I believe the students are taking advantage of the opportunities we create for growth and reflection within their own faiths and the common values of all faiths. We know that young people need to develop an inner gyroscope to guide their adult lives. Our faculty takes seriously their job as role models of the Benedictine way. I see the students responding to the examples of the faculty and the monks. As we look to the future, we face challenges, but I want to put them in perspective. Priory 2001, nearing its halfcentury mark, is a community that has grown and thrived and learned to do its job well. The rewarding growth in support from parents and friends, which you will see in Wayne Davison’s letter on page 12, demonstrates to me your confidence in Priory education and leadership. Our Golden Jubilee year is 2007. As I have worked through our Strategic Plan, our 10-year Master Plan, and our school accreditation self-study, I have held in my mind a picture of the education I hope to celebrate on that anniversary. It will have the look and feel and values of the Priory’s roots. It will secure for students more creative opportunity for individual growth and continue the opportunity for personal relationships with teachers. It will take the best tools of contemporary education and apply them to helping each student become the best adult he or she can be. After much study, we know that the goals I announce in the Golden Jubilee campaign, which we launch now, are a critical part of that vision. I asked to have on this page the photo of two of the founding monks looking out on the bare fields that faced them in 1957. Our founders were seven young Benedictines with little money but an unshakeable dream of the school that we enjoy today. Their vision became reality. So can ours. This photo is a source of inspiration for me and I hope it will be for you, too, as you read about our dreams for now and the next fifty years. I have confidence that we can achieve the vision expressed in the Golden Jubilee plan. Our success now will ensure academic quality for the immediate future and a secure existence for the Priory over the next fifty years. I invite you to join me in making it happen. What I ask for now is that you become familiar with the plan so that, over time, you might choose to help in whatever way seems right for you.
I have in my mind a picture of the Priory education I hope to celebrate in 2007.
The founding monks’ dream of a beautiful, successful school has come true. So can our dream for Priory education in 2007.
Sincerely,
3 Tim Molak, Headmaster
Personal student-teacher relationships, adult role models and academic excellence are what the Priory community expects from its faculty.
Priory graduates take with them a values-based philosophy that will last a lifetime.
Promote Each Student’s Strengths Preserve Community Values Provide For The Future This summary of challenges and solutions explains the heart of the Golden Jubilee campaign, phase one. The five projects support the campaign goals printed above. Challenge: Foster An Exciting, Dedicated Faculty We are proud of our dedicated faculty but we are faced with the most difficult competition in memory when it comes to hiring and retaining the best teachers. The Bay Area has a shortage of teachers. The cost of living and housing prices keep teachers out of the market. Golden Jubilee Solution: Housing and Endowment We need endowment funds to provide competitive salaries, benefits, and professional development opportunities and to maintain our low student-teacher ratio. We need housing to attract and retain the best teachers and to continue the Priory tradition of an on-campus “core community” of educators. Alvin Maas, parent of one Priory graduate and one eleventh-grader, expressed the housing situation well: “When my son Ryan was young, I could see this problem coming. How could the Priory possibly bring the best teachers to Portola Valley unless they could solve the housing problem? This school has a unique advantage because it has land and a history of an on-campus community. I got involved in helping to plan and fund this a few years ago because the need was so obvious.” Perhaps a picture is the best way to explain the role of endowment in an independent school’s security. School’s Annual Budget Tuition
Annual Gifts
Endowment Income
A school’s annual budget comes from just three sources: tuition, annual gifts, and endowment income. As times change and the first two sources decline, endowment income is the stabilizing element. Endowment is a form of savings that cushions economic blows. Clearly, we are at a disadvantage in this area. Endowment Funds of Local Comparable Schools
School 1 $11.4 Million
School 2 $15 Million
School 3 $9.3 Million
School 4 $14 Million
Woodside Priory $750,000 —as of June 30, 2000
Students are enthusiastic about community service, but these and other activities need room to flourish. This group pitched in at a thank-you banquet for Priory annual fund donors.
Music is booming under the direction of teachers Kris Yenney and Dan Hughes. The time is right for Priory music to become all it can be.
6
The pleasure of a shared book is still an important part of friendship. With better use of library space, these moments could be encouraged.
Priory families have done their part generously with tuition increases and annual giving to meet the teacher compensation challenge. But this issue isn’t going away any time soon. It is unreasonable to expect these sources to provide a long-range, reliable solution. We will be more secure in our hiring and in any future crises when our savings are closer to theirs in size. Challenge: Bring A Priory Education To Students Of All Income Levels As tuition increases, our need for funds to support all students must increase, too. About 20% of Priory’s student body receives some financial support and we want to protect this tradition. Golden Jubilee Solution: Protect Financal Aid With Endowment Endowment is the cushion that covers this cost when other income drops.
Challenge: Encourage Academics and Activities to Flourish Our student body has more than doubled in the past decade, yet no new buildings have been added. Students thrive on the broader curriculum and choices of after-school activities, but we need more classrooms and meeting spaces to house them. Our well-loved Assembly Hall and Seminar Room is overused as a performing arts classroom/meeting room/activities space. And it is now too small to hold the whole community for assemblies. Golden Jubilee Solution: A Cutting-Edge Center for the Performing Arts Leads the Way The key to all these space needs is a new Performing Arts Center to replace the Assembly Hall. As Al Ebneter, our trustee overseeing space planning, explains, “It makes sense to build a new multi-use facility with some additional classrooms for the performing arts because it meets a need and it opens up space throughout the rest of the campus. The construction would be between the gym and Founders Hall, away from the academic area. The vacant Assembly Hall can then house the library expansion, and the vacant library can become a student center. Consolidating the student activities and services frees up classrooms where they are needed in the academic wings.” Al and our architects have designed an ingenious, attractive, facility that will accommodate Additional faculty housing is well under way. This sketch was done by Trustee Al Ebneter, who is overseeing all the facilities construction for Golden Jubilee campaign projects.

When a class is using the library, a quiet reading place can be hard to find.
Students fill every available nook and cranny to hold their meetings. Better facilities would foster their independence, energy and interest.
Gershwin! , was an exciting creative experience for students and it proved that local theatergoers would come to the Priory. But musicals are nearly impossible to produce without theater facilities. The drama department is ready to grow! (Cast photo, 1998)
school-wide assemblies, lectures, and dances while giving students the space and technological support for a wide variety of theater and musical performances. The room can adapt to small groups, and more than one group at a time, and it has a maximum seating of about 430 for performances and more than 530 for community events such as graduations. The front lobby will provide a site for small conferences, public events and receptions, as well as an area to showcase outstanding student work in the fine arts. Three attached classrooms will be outfitted optimally for theater and music study but can easily be used by other departments. A fourth room will be outfitted with shop equipment for theater and other student work. One benefit of a new auditorium that appeals to Ray Rothrock, parent of an incoming sixth grader and Portola Valley resident, is “the opportunity for Portola Valley to have a state-ofthe-art modern facility for possible town-wide events in addition to the Priory's activities. The Priory's musicians are award-winning, and our Community Forum lecture series is popular. The school is already forced to turn away neighbors who would like seating at the various stage productions of the Priory. What might we do in conjunction with our town and neighbors? The sky is the limit.” Student Jesse Lampert is one of those who would love to make use of better performing arts facilities. “I think it would be really cool to think you’re playing in a great facility. You’re giving back to your community and you’re sharing your talent with other people.”
The new Center for the Performing Arts will provide an auditorium and classrooms outfitted to support arts instruction and greater student participation. (Sketch by Trustee Al Ebneter.)

Golden Jubilee Campaign Projects: Faculty Housing $3,000,000
Charles Kou, Class of 2001 and now a student at Stanford, participated in virtually every music opportunity the Priory offers, and he even created one of his own (the Shoo-Be-Do Wahs, an a cappella pop music quartet). He explains from a student’s view what the auditorium and performing arts classrooms might do: "I think it's important to somehow show people that music is fun--that it is enriching to the mind and soul. The new performing arts facilities can provide the momentum. It can mean more music classes—we really need more classes! It can lead to more music in everyday school events and more outside performances.
Endowment $5,000,000 Facilities "Trinity Package" in order of construction or relocation:
"Without the right equipment, everyone is handicapped. It's the same problem as using a broad brush to create a delicate picture."
Performing Arts Center $5,300,000 and Classrooms $1,700,000
Challenge: Open The Library To Its Full Potential We are fortunate to have books, all other media, and terrific contemporary research tools for our students. But in our busy, crowded library it can be hard to read quietly. Sometimes, the doors must be closed to other students when classes are in session.
Library/Media Center $600,000 Student Center/Classrooms $100,000 (Facilities plans and costs are preliminary.)
Promote Each Student's Strengths . . . Preserve Community Values . . . Provide for the Future
Golden Jubilee Solution: Relocate In The Assembly Hall This room, which began life as a library, is perfect for our current needs. The books and computers for independent research can be housed in the main room and the banks of computers used by classes can be housed in the adjoining Seminar Room (now used by music students). This move will be a minimal cost but will make a big difference in functionality. Susan Falaschi is assistant librarian and co-teacher with Suzanne Koppett of our freshman writing and research methods course. The new facility would be a wonderful solution, she explained. In addition, she said, “I have a dream of a library with an inviting, comfortable space where students can come, relax, and enjoy reading”. Challenge: Make Student Activities The Best They Can Be—But Not At The Curriculum’s Expense At the same time as our students’ after-school activities and community service are booming with creativity and success, our course offerings have also increased. They are competing for space.
10
Golden Jubilee Solution: Consolidate Students Resources — Classroom Space Emerges In the vacant library space, we can bring together student activities and services in a way that creates the synergy we hope for in students’ work. Simultaneously, relocating the existing services will free several individual rooms needed by classes throughout the campus. The bookstore, counseling offices, campus ministry and student publications can be housed together. —C. Dobervich
From the Benedictine Community For the monks of the Priory, watching our school thrive and grow and change is a special joy. This school is our life’s work. Its security is important to us and we care about its future. The promise of the Golden Jubilee campaign is to preserve the quality of education we cherish with support that will be felt immediately and for the next fifty years. This promise is exciting and real. The Priory Benedictine community enthusiastically supports this campaign. Abbot Matthew, head of our parent abbey, St. Anselm, and Father William, whom many of you will remember as our dynamic Prior, now Prior at St. A’s, have also been enthusiastically supportive from the beginning. We all have been in touch with the planning process, and Brother Edward is a member of the Campaign Leadership Team. I can speak for us all in saying the campaign volunteers have our hopes and prayers for success. I hope that once you learn about the campaign you will offer your prayers, too. It was exciting to see the way student creativity blossomed when we expanded the fine arts building a few years ago. Kids who had never tried art before signed up for a class or just dropped in. The synergy of these students at work is wonderful! It looks like art class but they call on the skills from all their other classes, and they develop their problem-solving skills without even knowing it. And while their hands are busy, they are sharing thoughts with each other, under the excellent guidance of the Easley sisters, who quietly teach more than art. I think we will see our performing arts, after-school activities and campus ministry blossom in the same way when we provide the space. In the 27 years I have been at the Priory, the “in” hair styles and the cool slang kids use come and go, but the guiding values of their educational experience have not changed. They never will. This is important because Benedictine communities are becoming a rare breed. I think we are preserving something—a philosophy worth knowing. Each student leaves the Priory carrying with him or her that philosophy, which will influence his or her adult life and hopefully influence others by example. I look forward to a great school year ahead and I want to invite you now to join the Benedictine community at the Priory’s Golden Jubilee party in 2007. We are anticipating a great celebration!
The campaign volunteers have our hopes and prayers for success... We are anticipating a great celebration!
Sincerely,
Father Martin Mager, OSB Superior of the Benedictine Community

We are entering the new millennium with a successful year behind us and an exciting new development plan before us. I want to thank every individual reading these words for the year past; your many kinds of support make it all possible. The following 12 pages demonstrate the Priory’s strong position. I hope you share my joy in reviewing all that was accomplished. In launching the Golden Jubilee campaign, we are approaching the biggest planning and funding project since the Priory’s founding. The wonderful growth in gifts to the annual fund and the auction are a gratifying expression of support for the Priory’s leadership and values. It stands as evidence to me that the Priory community and friends, past and present, believe in our vision of what the best education can be. With this solid community support, I am confident that we will succeed. The Board of Trustees, which initiated the entire planning process, unanimously endorses these campaign goals. As you will see in Father Martin’s letter, we have the blessing and support and prayers of the Benedictine community. The Trustees have already contributed to the fund. Over the past year we have visited key friends of the school as part of the planning process. Many have already stepped forward with their financial support. As a result, we are in the fortunate position of beginning this $15.7 million fund-raising effort with $6 million already pledged. Costs of the campaign are being covered by a donor, so that 100 percent of campaign gifts will go to the projects. A second campaign phase of $5-$10 million is expected to begin in 2003 or thereabouts. Its particular goals will reflect further planning for additional endowment, classrooms, and facilities improvements.
Over the next 12 months, I ask all of you to support the Priory in the following ways: • Continue your annual gift and auction support at its current level. These are the funds that cover our annual budget for teachers and supplies. Simply put, these gifts are essential. • Become familiar with the Golden Jubilee campaign vision. You will be invited to informational coffees and campus tours. The family barbecue will feature displays about our goals. A web site with many more details will be online soon at www.woodsidepriory.com/campaign—it is especially entertaining because it has video clips of students in action. This campaign will be with us for a few years and the site will be updated periodically with interesting new photos and commentary. • Begin thinking now about how you might wish to add your support to the campaign goals. This isn’t a decision to be quickly made. We would prefer to meet with you, hear your ideas and share our thoughts. However you choose to contribute, we want your participation to be meaningful and rewarding for you as well as for the school. Any one of several volunteers from the Board of Trustees and Campaign Leadership Team or Doug Ayer, Director of Development , will be pleased to discuss options with you.
This is an exciting time as we celebrate the education our students now enjoy and plan to make their experience the best it can be—now and for the next 50 years. Sincerely,
12

St. Benedict’s wisdom, which inspired the founding of the school, still inspires the Priory’s teaching and daily life. Benedictine values are an integral part of campus culture, transmitted daily by both word and example. It’s a job the faculty and staff take seriously and pursue actively.

Younger and older students working together continues to be a successful part of Priory education. In addition to its desktop workstations, the Priory now has "portable pods" of 20 wireless computers in the library and the science center. Students also have "roaming profiles" that make it possible for them to access their work from any PC on the campus. The entire campus now has a T-1 Internet connection.

A new Parent Association committee of parent boosters for the Residential Life program threw a surprise first annual treetrimming party at Christmas. Baby Taylor Trujillo, being held by Kevin Lin, never misses a dorm event with her 40 big brothers. Other Parent Association highlights: speakers discussing parenting of teens, and our very special on-campus thank you luncheon for faculty and staff.
