Woodside Priory School A Learning Community for the New Century
In This Issue Summer grants provide the spark for faculty to update their skills and curriculum, especially in technology. The successful housing campaign, on time and on budget, is both a “first” and a repetition of Priory history. Roads and sewers are being prepared for three parcels of Priory land now available for sale. Faculty and student themes both set the tone for a new year. From the Headmaster, page 3.

Father Egon Javor is the refugee priest whose vision and determination shaped the Priory as much as any other individual’s. He didn’t intend any of it—but wars and necessity intervened to take him away from a life of university-level scholarship to this small monastery and campus, where he lives today. In this issue he tells about his childhood, his escape to America, his view of life today. Conversation With Father Egon, page 4. Taylor’s fourth CD was released this fall, and he has signed with the same producers that represented everyone from Earth Wind and Fire to Nat King Kole and David Benoit. Conversation With
Father Egon JAVOR
A Devout Man of God Talks About The Many Surprises In His Life
Father Egon, 1956
44
A conversation with Fr. Egon Javor, one of the founding fathers and Prior of Woodside Priory for its first 10 years, is full of short, homey digressions—the name Egon, for instance, is the Hungarian version of Yves or Yvon, and Javor means "maple, like the tree"—a lot of humor and not a little self-effacement. He tells a little of his escape from Communist Hungary in the late 1940s before saying the full story is too long. Since his retirement from the school in 1987, Fr. Egon continues as a full-time monk and priest, with duties in the Benedictine community, visits to aging friends and benefactors, funerals, baptisms, marriages and service as chaplain of the Knights of Malta. In this "Conversation With‌" Fr. Egon, who holds a doctorate in sacred theology from the University of Budapest, discusses entering the Benedictine community, leaving Hungary, and forging a new community and school in the United States.
You fled the Communist oppression in Hungary? I escaped from Hungary in 1948. Nov. 13. Friday night. That must have been very traumatic, if you still remember the day. It was dangerous. The border was mined. You could be arrested. You could be shot. It was more dangerous when I reached Austria, because that zone of the country was under Russian occupation, and I did not have any official papers. In the summer, the guard would sit out under any bush, and if you wanted to escape, you might walk into a trap. In November, it was cold, and the guard had to keep moving. So I made footsteps, and then listened. And then I’d move forward. At midnight, it was dangerous because the moon came up, and I had to cross a big meadow where you could be seen. What was your family life like earlier? I come from a family of five children. My father died when I was 7 years old. My three sisters started to dominate me. When I was about 8 or 9, my male ego could not suffer this female domination, and I did not behave. The family decided that the boy needs a man’s school. Luckily, I had a relative, a Benedictine, Fr. Aristid, who took care of my education. Did Fr. Aristid influence you to become a monk? He never said in words but with his example. He always pointed out to me how nice it was to be a teacher of young students: the intellectual work and the formation of human souls. He made the life attractive. And he pointed to the married teachers. He said, "Look, they have their problems. They have their families." I thought I could be a better teacher if I could be free of other obligations.
What were the years before the war like? Just before the war, it was a very good period: prosperity, peace. I was editing medieval missals preserved from the 13th and 14th centuries. I was an ordained priest in 1941. I earned my doctorate in 1942. For my thesis, I published seven manuscript missals. If the war had not come, I would (still) be sitting in a library, continuing intellectual work. But the war came. Hungary was occupied by the Germans. I was drafted and served as a military chaplain for 15 months in Russia. For my services, I was decorated with the military medal of merit, signum laudis. From 1944 to ’48, I taught in one of our schools. That was really a happy period in my life in a very nice town, Sopron. But in ’48, the state took over our schools. I was harassed several times by the Communists. So I escaped. Somehow God wanted me to come to California.
On escaping from Hungary: “It was dangerous. The border was mined. You could be arrested. You could be shot...So I made footsteps and then listened. And then I’d move forward.”
What were your early years in the United States like? I started out in Morriston, New Jersey. I was invited by the abbot to teach theology to young monks. When I arrived in the United States, my English was minimal, and my students did not know Latin. So I had to prepare in English. But I could not pronounce the words. Once I was speaking about St. Ambrose, that he was so important in Roman law. I said he was a great expert in Roman love. And the students burst out laughing, "Oh, Father." Even today, everyone always knows who I am from my voice. Some of my students could imitate me so well. One former student called up his brother, and the brother thought I was speaking. He said, "I am coming for dinner. Prepare." And his brother ordered the dinner. He ordered the wine.
Continued on page 6

What were the early years like? Partly ideal, partly difficult. When we started the school, the revolution broke out in Hungary. When I went for donations, they said, "Oh, Father, we are so sorry; we just gave to the Hungarian refugees." The fathers and the few students formed one family. Our European discipline was too hard for our American students. For six years, we had classes on Saturdays. The fathers had to learn and respect the leisurely lifestyle of Californians. We had no money, and everything was needed: classrooms, a library, laboratories. A converted Army barrack served many purposes for years.
On the early years: “Our European discipline was too hard for our American students. For six years, we had classes on Saturdays. The fathers had to learn and respect the leisurely lifestyle of Californians.”
6
What brought you to California? We were seven fathers from the same monastery scattered all over the United States. I came to the West because the population was growing, and they needed teachers and priests. There were no Benedictines in this part of the state. I thought we would have a better chance in this open Western territory. I drove to San Francisco and went to the archbishop and obtained his permission to open a monastery and school. How did you find the land? It was the cheapest property I found. The price of most land was between $6,000 and $8,000. Here we started on 18 acres, at the price of $3,000 per acre. That was unusually inexpensive. It’s a good location. Portola Valley was not yet incorporated. If we had had money, we could have bought all the valley. We borrowed the money for the down payment from Benedictine monasteries, from friends. Later we got a bank loan. We survived on loans on loans.
What were the difficult parts of the early years of the Priory? For the fathers, it was difficult to resume community life after years going our separate ways. We had three doctors of sacred theology, one doctor in biology, one doctor in philosophy and one doctor in atomic physics. Some also had degrees in education and music. Five were teaching in universities, colleges or divinity schools. It was not an easy decision to return to teaching high school. If we had had the money, we would have opened only the monastery. The rewards were moral and material support. The Americans, with great generosity, were helping us. In the second year, the parents asked us to raise the tuition. We asked so little, they said, people would not believe their children were getting a quality education. Real support came when our graduates were accepted in good universities. Is the school still a source of satisfaction? I am very pleased that the school is doing so well, that it has so many fine students and such a reputation. Finally, the school is making (enough) money! I am sorry we have so few monks.

This Fisherman's Line Is National Oceanic Policy As a boy, Pietro Parravano turned down invitations to fish in Michigan's many lakes and rivers. "The idea," Parravano remembered, "was too boring." One day, that all changed. Today Parravano is a commercial fisherman, selling his catch of king salmon, Dungeness crab and rockfish at farmers markets in Palo Alto and Menlo Park. And he has become an advocate for the family fisherman, serving on a number of commissions and panels including the Pew Oceans Commission, which is developing a blueprint for national oceanic policy; the Bay-Delta Advisory Panel, overseeing the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Estuary and its watershed; and the San Mateo County Harbor District, managing a commercial fishing harbor and a recreational harbor. Parravano knows exactly when he had his change of heart. He was teaching chemistry, physics and earth science at the Priory in 1980 when a fellow teacher, John Hofferd, asked him if he wanted to go sport salmon fishing. "It was my first experience of fishing in the ocean," Parravano said. "The fog and gentle movements of the ocean accentuated all the smell, excitement and anticipation." He was hooked. He bought a 19-foot Boston whaler and spent the summer fishing. He enjoyed it so much that, though he taught for one more year, Parravano decided to try fishing full time at the end of the term. That trial run has lasted more than two decades, although many people tried to dissuade Parravano from fishing. "I traveled up the coast looking for a vessel that was more accommodating than the small boat that I had. Just about every fisherman that I talked with said, 'Don't get into fishing-it is too hard; the regulations will put everybody out of business.'" Instead, with the help of a patient wife, Joan, a registered nurse he met while working at a hospital during graduate school, Parravano made oceanic life his career. He bought a 35-foot wooden salmon troller named Anne B. and learned that "fishing is the last thing a fisherman gets to do." You have to maintain the boat and equipment, know how to navigate and read charts, have a business sense and be disciplined. "Then, after all that—one gets to go fishing." Within a few years, Parravano began involving himself in issues affecting local fishermen: namely,
Alumni Profile how do you protect the waters so they continue to provide a habitat for the very fish you catch? To that end, Parravano is engaged in a campaign to ensure that coastal development is limited, pollutants are eliminated, and the fish are able to thrive. Parravano was born in Princeton, N.J. and moved to South Bend, Ind., for a few years before his family settled in Ann Arbor, Mich. His father was a professor in chemical engineering at the University of Michigan. After graduating from the Priory in 1967, Parravano studied at Santa Clara University for two years before returning to the Midwest to finish his undergraduate studies in chemistry at Eastern Michigan University. As he was completing a master's degree in biology there, Fr. Christopher called and offered Parravano a teaching position. Parravano believes he owes his career to the Priory, both because of the colleague who introduced him to ocean fishing and for the discipline the school, and Fr. Christopher, instilled in him. "We studied very hard in the classroom and we played soccer very hard after school," Parravano said. Fr. Christopher "brought out the strength and depth of the mind" through writing assignments and discussions. "On the soccer field, he exercised the strength of the body by yelling out, 'Shoot the ball!' " And there was a simplicity to Priory life in the 1960s that Parravano found appealing. "That simplicity showed me that one does not need a lot of material things in life. You, with your mind and body, are the most important elements that one needs to have a happy and successful life." -G. Young

Student View Jazz Music Blends History, Improvisation and Teamwork
Taylor Eigsti, Class of 2002,is a freshman at USC this fall.
“You’ve gotta know the history of what you are doing. If you’re not rooted down on the ground, then you can’t grow into something else.”
For most listeners, "new" music (i.e. whatever we don’t usually listen to) can grate on the ear. Priory grad and professional jazz musician Taylor Eigsti would like nothing better than to make the music he loves more approachable. In an interview last spring, he talked about ways for nonjazz listeners to understand the genre. Taylor’s fourth CD, Resonance, was released at the prestigious jazz club, Yoshi’s, this month. You can read about it and hear sound clips online at Tayjazz.com. It will be available at record stores starting mid-October. Taylor has signed a recording contract with the Bop City label, whose owners either produced or engineered recordings for artists such as Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra, Earth Wind and Fire, Nat King Kole and David Benoit. They plan to record a new CD with Taylor in early 2003. How could people who don’t generally listen to jazz begin to enjoy it? It helps to know a little about it beforehand. In jazz music, you take a melody, you play (an improvised) solo, then you play the melody. It’s basic music, basic chords, then the soloist doing what he wants on top of that to make it sound cool. Playing off other people (in the group), reading their minds. More than just that—it’s a story being created on the spot. Which is why a song played by a live group is different every time. That’s pretty much the way it is, whether it’s abstract jazz or bebop or something really funky. There are a lot of great, hip, modern things that people can listen to.
Is there a way to know it’s jazz you’re hearing? You won’t find jazz in an elevator. Frank Sinatra and Kenny G aren’t what I would call jazz, although a lot of people lump them in with jazz. Sinatra was a pop 84 singer of his time and Kenny G is a soft rock instrumentalist—he just happens to play the sax.
If you’re listening to a real jazz song, you’ll hear the melody first, then a bunch of notes that aren’t the melody but are being made up on the spot. So improvisation is a key. Wasn’t that the case in early classical music? Bach actually has some places in his music where he says "improvise over that." There are interesting connections between baroque music, for example, and jazz, involving improvisation. There are many ways to get into jazz. For my generation, at least, you could start with modern music. Everything in pop music has branched out of jazz…You can listen to the basic rhythms and get the traces between the music (styles). You can start with slave songs, putting them to instrumental music, then Dixieland, then older jazz, then swing era, which progressed into the more linear style of chords that musicians now improvise over to get all these other modern genres. Like, rap came out of that jazz genre and R & B. Do you think there’s an affinity between rap and jazz? Well, yes—and improv comedy. It’s that you are being spontaneous. You don’t know what’s going to happen ahead of time. You know the basic rules, the basic palette, and whatever you do with that is up to you. And it’s so great because it’s everyone in the group playing off of each other. I love playing in a trio so much more than working alone. So musicians build on the work of other musicians and on the work of earlier musicians Yes, exactly. And it kind of sucks to see that a lot of contemporary musicians are just ignoring these earlier genres. You can tell it in their music, too. It’s just a copy of music they are hearing now, but it’s not going anywhere. You’ve gotta know the history of what you are doing. If you’re not rooted down on the ground, then you can’t grow into something else. But if you have all that music under you, then you can use it to push up. —C.Dobervich

“We began our first school year with the invocation of the Holy Ghost in the small chapel in the monastery. With the Benedictine spirit and faith in God, the miracle began to unfold. The first students lived in the ranch house, but a growing student body and the delay caused by lack of funds for a dormitory necessitated the erection, at the beginning of the second year, of a surplus Army barrack that houses 20 students.

“The new dormitory, library, chapel and a new classroom wing followed—and, at last, a generous grant permitting a fully equipped laboratory.

Many members of the 1970 community joined together to create short-term and long-term tributes to this talented scholar and athlete. Among them is Kalman Field, the athletic field behind the gym. 1970 yearbook.
“When I visit with other heads of schools, I am struck with our good fortune at Woodside Priory. I often reflect with gratitude on the monks and their supporters who over the years have made this possible. Now it is our turn, and I am grateful to each of your for your support.”

“The American tradition of independent school education is based on individual gift support. Annual giving enables independent schools to provide their students with a better education than reliance on tuition alone would permt. Captial and endowment gifts assure long-term strength. In its 45th year, our school is flourishing and its promise is bright. This is a testament to the generosity of the Priory community.” 23

Housing Finale: Maas Family Commons Homes Have Names
D
onors who provide major support to specific Campaign projects (such as the housing project or endowment fund) are given an opportunity to attach a name to their gift. They may select their own names, their family name or the names of individuals whom they wish to honor. Donors who wish to remain anonymous at present may defer the naming of the project they funded to a future time. Appropriate signage will identify the new seven residences as the Maas Family Commons in honor of Al and Suzanne Maas. Three individual units will be carry names selected by Bob and Connie Klein, Rick and Amy Magnuson, and Hank and Lisa Plain. A fourth may eventually be named by an anonymous donor.
The unnamed units still present naming opportunities, even though they are already built. The Campaign’s housing project drew upon contributions that were unrestricted, and donors willing to replenish those unrestricted funds by significantly underwriting a unit’s cost could select the name for that unit. At the Priory, we take pride in the fact that "everybody knows your name." We are pleased that, for generations to come, everyone will know the names of those whose kindness permitted the building of additional campus housing for faculty and staff.

Groundbreaking Celebration!
C
hampagne, white linen and student Michael Yost standing in as a tuxedo-clad waiter set the tone for the official groundbreaking for the Maas Family Commons on September 10. The event was in the tradition of Suzanne Eyre, an early and lifelong friend of the Priory who threw just such a party on the hill to solicit help in creating beautiful and lasting landscaping. Al Maas was—in addition to being a key contributor—one of the people who introduced the vision of additional on-campus housing now, because of the advantage it brings in hiring and retaining the best faculty, staff, and administrators. Trustee Art Schultz, and developers Al Ebneter and Tom Dempsey also played key roles in funding and design. A final celebration was held at the Family Picnic on September 22, with a poster story of "House On The Hill: The Story of the Maas Family Commons " and presentation of the St. Benedict Medal to the Maases. Photos are online at www.woodsidepriory.com/campaign. Click on Housing.
Current and past trustees on hand to raise a glass include Pat Adams, who was the first official contributor to the Campaign.
More than three years of vision, planning and perseverance on the part of the school
administration, board of trustees and Al Maas were
behind the first shovels lifted at the groundbreaking.
The Maases and monks take their turn.
Students, faculty and staff gathered at the building site to see Father Martin bless the land on the morning of September 9
