Woodside Priory School Celebrating 47 Years of Benedictine Education In This Issue A few “fast facts” give a picture of the campus this fall…Dr. John Erkman joins the administrative team…emergency preparedness training has the campus ready for the unexpected, and the master plan/conditional use permit hearings are coming to a close. Headmaster’s Letter, page 3.

Summer/Fall at a Glance, Page 4-5

It’s girls AND boys in the the dorms…boarding parents enjoy dinner at the home of local parents…the family barbecue and traditional Field Day events launch the school year…academics are looking backwards (at least in seventh grade)…that and more in Fall at a Glance, pages 4 and 5. The Golden Jubilee Campaign is looking good, and support for the annual operating budget is still strong, says Ray Rothrock, chair of the Priory’s Board of Trustees. Accomplishments of the past year and a glimpse of the year ahead are in Letter from the Board Chair, page 6.

Everybody knew something was different about Elaine’s class. Fellow alumna Liesl Yost, class of 2001, talks with Elaine Middleman, class of 1995 about being one of the first girls to invade the all-boys campus. Today, Elaine is pursuing a career in cancer research. Alumni Conversations, page 7. Where in the world can you find someone from the Priory? Just about everywhere. We made a map showing how far the school’s reach extends these days. There is a special mention of WPS’s first international parent organization. See pages 8-9.

Benedictine Youth Congress, Page 10

The International Benedictine Youth Congress theme was peace. It was superbly achieved through spirituality, comraderie, and a lot of shared good times. Read what participants had to say–comments are distributed throughout this year’s annual report, beginning on page 10. As always, lists of donors large and small are printed—with gratitude to each and every one—in the 2003-2004 annual report. It begins on page 10, with acknowledgment of volunteers beginning on page 20, and the financial report on page 25. The Golden Jubilee report is on pages 26-27.

On the cover: A student dance based on liturgical themes was a highlight for many at the Second Annual Benedictine Youth Congress, hosted on the campus over the summer. More than 170 people from all over the world attended. Inset photo: A tradition of all-male boarding came to an end this fall, and eight young women now have a special wing in Anselm House. From the Headmaster Summer flew past and we are already well into our forty-eighth academic year. For readers who remember our earlier days, these “fast facts” might help you envision the campus this fall: • Priory enrollment is 340 students • Eight young women reside in the new girls’ wing of Anselm House, the upper dorm • Some fifty faculty members are teaching more than 100 courses, and that doesn’t count the co-curricular activities. Check out the new “Curriculum Map” on the school Web site if you are interested—you’ll want to come back to school yourself! • Average class size is 14 students. • More than 30 percent of this year’s senior class are National Merit honorees—11 as commended scholars and 7 as semifinalists. • 111 students took 213 Advanced Placement classes last year, and 83% of them received a “3” or better. (The scores range from 1 to 5, and 3 is generally accepted for credit by colleges.) I expect roughly the same participation or slightly more this year. We start the year with a new Dean of Students— Dr. John Erkman, an educator with 35 years of leadership experience in Catholic and public schools. He first became aware of the Priory from two of our administrators who were taking his classes in Educational Administration at Santa Clara University. When the Priory opening became available, they encouraged him to apply. I have four items on my “what we did last summer” report. Hundreds of children attended our annual Camp Unique summer program on the campus, and about 45 children attended the Bridge academic enrichment program (offered to students of promise who attend schools with less academic support). We hosted the Second Annual International Benedictine Youth Congress, one of the most exciting and rewarding activities we have ever sponsored (see page 10). Finally, the Town of Portola Valley held the first public hearings on WPS’s proposed master plan and revised conditional use permit.

The public hearing on July 21 was our first opportunity to introduce the Priory’s final proposal, which reflects many revisions based on 10 months of input from town officials and residents. It also was our first opportunity to see the town planning department’s recommendations. While not supportive of every element of our plan, the Portola Valley Planning Department recommendations are constructive and reasonable. They recognize the school size that we need and approve in concept the facilities that we need—with the requirement that the school attain town approval on specifics as we go forward. At a second hearing in late August, we took planning commissioners and interested residents on a tour of the campus. Further hearings are set for October and possibly November. Having a supportive Priory community talking to neighbors and attending the hearings has made a terrific difference. I want to thank everyone who contributed to this effort and encourage you to continue your involvement. We started the school year with something we hope we will never need—emergency preparedness training. At a half-day session led by a consultant in this field, the entire faculty and staff reviewed where to go and what to do in case of everything from earthquake to air contamination. We are fortunate to be on a campus in a safe area, where many supplies are always on hand. Faculty and staff committees will continue to refine our emergency preparedness plans this year. Next year, we will all refresh our CPR/first aid training. Many of you will be involved in the school’s selfstudy that begins in earnest this fall as a part of the Western Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation process. Faculty, staff, parents, students and alumni are all involved in an information-gathering, fact-finding and analytical process. Next year, under the guidance of Brother Edward Englund, we will publish a self-study. The WASC committee will visit in March 2006. I hope you enjoy this issue of the magazine, and I want to join with Ray Rothrock, Board Chair, in thanking all of you for all you do to support Woodside Priory School in achieving its mission.

Tim Molak, Headmaster

Almost 30 percent of this year’s senior class are National Merit honorees. And eighty-three percent of Priory student taking an AP exam last year scored a “3” or better.

Summer/Fall at a Traditional dances were among the events at the Hungarian Community Picnic this summer. Woodside Priory has for many years been the home to the Hungarian Catholic Mission, and services are held in Hungarian every Sunday.

Parents of boarding students were hosted at a poolside dinner at the home of Rick and Linda Frasch. The backto-school program for boarding parents also included opportunities to talk with Betty Van Wagenen, college counselor, and meet the students’ residential advisors.

An all-male boarding tradition ended this fall with the arrival of eight young women to the new girls’ wing of St. Anselm house. Sophomore Yu-Jen (Theresa) Dai and her father, Hsien-Ling (Walter), (center) were among the first to arrive, and fellow boarding students Francys and Lesley Scott (left and right, respectively), were already on hand to greet her.

Glance

National Honor Society’s car wash brought in almost $1,300 for charity at the annual Family Barbecue, held from 3:30 until 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, 2004. It was an Aloha event, with Hawiian-themed music, food, and flower leis. The “bounce house” and other games kept youngsters busy while parents chatted and enjoyed the first cool breeze after a long, hot spell. More academically oriented parent events during the first weeks of school included back-toschool night and a week of class-by-class meetings with Director of College Counseling Betty Van Wagenen.

“It’s called a slide rule and they used them before calculators were invented. (long pause). They’re really hard to use!” opined Sarah Wookey. Seventh grade social studies students were learning about original research, and many called on parents, grandparents and friends to teach them skills not readily available today. Recipes were also popular, and students shared bites of each other’s dishes after the presentations were finished.

Faculty put up a good fight in the annual tug-of-war at the back to school field day events organized by the students. Pulling their weight here are (from left) Kelly Couch, social studies faculty, Bob Bessin, mathematics faculty, Father Maurus Nemeth, science department chair, Kevin Wang, science and technology faculty, and Damian Cohen, social studies faculty. The students are members of the sophomore class.

Letter from the Board of Trustees I

We can point with pride to the young men and women who leave these halls as well equipped for the modern world as anyone can be.

hope the summer was rewarding for you and your families and didn’t pass by too quickly. My own family had a great summer, but it seems like only yesterday that my eighth grader was graduating from the middle school! New he is well into his freshman year. Welcome back as we “begin again.” I would like to summarize here some highlights of the past year. The school’s first complete master plan for facilities use since 1967 is at this writing midway through the public hearing process. This project lays the groundwork for much-needed renovations and new facilities, and is supported by the school’s Golden Jubilee Capital Campaign. The Golden Jubilee Campaign raised over $2 million this past fiscal year (ending June 30), bringing the total raised since it began four years ago to over $12 million. The target is $15.9 million for phase one, with approximately another $10 million for phases two and three. In fiscal 2003, the school completed seven additional housing units; the Maas Family Commons was occupied by faculty and staff in summer 2003. The chapel was renovated and expanded. Both of these improvements were a direct result of the tremendous support shown by parents and friends of the Priory. In support of annual operating expenses, the Priory community raised more than $1 million through the annual fund, golf classic and auction. These annual contributions are essential. No private school operates with tuition alone, and as a relatively new campus with a small endowment, the Priory especially needs this annual support. With it, the Priory will continue to provide excellent teachers, small class size, and a variety of curricular and co-curricular options. The Young Concert Artists series launched in 2003-4 was a remarkable success and is set to continue this year. Two world class musicians are scheduled to spend an “artist-in-residence” day or two on the Priory campus. This exceptional program, underwritten by a generous parent, is a truly unique experience. Giving our kids the opportunity to work with and interact with these incredible artists conveys the young artists’ strong values of commitment and dedication. It lets our students see what can happen with talent, practice and dreams. I hope you can join us for these once-in-a lifetime performances. I want to thank two retiring trustees, Mary Lemuth and Liz Cirino, for their dedicated service and continued work in support of the school. Peter Campagna, who represented the Parents Association on the Board last year, is a new trustee. Andrea Zulberti, a neighbor of the Priory and parent of Darren, Class of 1999 is also joining the board. The Parent Association representative is Dale Pfau. Welcome, all. In 2000, with the beginning of the master plan studies and Golden Jubilee Campaign, the Priory embarked on an ambitious plan to “protect, preserve and provide” this unique Benedictine school for the next 50 years Many of you, the parents and friends of the Priory, have supported this effort and the activities of each school year with your time, your energy, your money, your ideas, and your love. We can proudly point to the great strides made and many goals achieved. Most important, we can with pride point to the students who have passed through these halls and become young women and men as well equipped for the modern world as anyone can be. Each has in addition to an outstanding academic foundation a sense of self, community and ethics. To all my friends in the Priory community, thank you for all that you do for the school and the students. I hope you look forward to the future of WPS as much as I do.

Alumni Conversation

First Girls Rocked The Campus in ’95 Editor’s note: In the last issue, we began a series of acrossthe-decades conversations between alumni. Last month, Liesl talked with Dave Rogers, Class of 1971. By Liesl Yost, Class of 2001

E

ven before they had to navigate the stairs and work the lockers, the members of the Class of 1995 knew they were…well…different. The rules had been changed, the dress code had some additions, and, oh yeah, there were females in this class. Needless to say, the first females made quite an impact on the Priory. To this day, a plaque commemorating that first class remains at the top of the stairs in Founders Hall. Elaine Middleman, a member of this class, now lives in Mountain View as she pursues her Ph.D. in cancer biology. She had a first row seat for those changes. She laughs about Priory memories with me as I catch her returning from yoga with her fiance, Richard. Remembering how the boys treated them when they first arrived, Elaine says “I don’t know what sort of talking-to they got before we got there, but it worked.” Upon arrival, their classmates were, as Elaine recalls, VERY polite. Doors were opened, and it was “ladies first” and “please” or “thank you.” They were apparently no longer allowed to change clothes in the school hallways—they were in the presence of ladies. This attitude did not last long, as the young men gradually realized they were on even terms, and by the time they all graduated, relations were “normal.” Their eventual sense of comfort did not come without incident. Elaine and a couple of female classmates made their mark on a fall dress-up day, surprising the administration by arriving in the prescribed dress code…the boy’s dress code. While they did bring their dresses to change into, the impact they made that day was unforgettable and it was not the last impact they made. For example, with the addition of girls to the sports program, locker room space for the girls was needed. The guys had to squeeze over, and what the girls knew as their first locker room today is the sports medicine office.

In asking a seemingly straightforward question: “What was Elaine best known for,” Jeanine Yost, who not only shadowed Elaine as an eighth grader but remains friends with her to this day, was suddenly at a loss. She offered to let me take my pick: “Part of the first class of girls, being the first female yearbook coeditor [with classmate Caitlin Kane]…the recycling program….” Still, with all these other activities, Elaine somehow found time to also participate in the school plays. Academically, she was interested in zoology and was considering being a veterinarian. With no AP Biology class available at that time, she worked with Fr. Maurus and a zoology textbook in an independent study program. Personal care of each student’s education—as exemplified by her independent study—remains a highlight of the Priory for Elaine. She recalls teachers who “listened to what you had to say—they treated you like a human being and not (just) a kid.” She is glad that the Priory still stresses the importance of community, and she applauds the community service graduation requirement (which was added after she left). In her opinion, “it is a wonderful opportunity— people who might not have tried it (volunteering) will discover it is something they like.” Years down the road, she believes that the emphasis on community and community service will stay with Priory as the school changes other aspects of the program to offer the best education it can. She speaks highly of how competitive Priory has become, saying “it’s amazing—good job for them… everyone wants to go to the Priory!” What’s even more telling is how many alumna (and alumni) still like to go back.

Elaine Middleman, shown here with fiance Richard Smith, was a member of that illustrious group.

Korean Parents These parents may have started a trend. Three years ago, they began meeting together with a goal of Brazil knowing each other, learning about college planning, and becoming more involved with their children’s school. Their interest helped lead the Priory to create more opportunities for parents to meet and socialize with faculty, administrators, and other parents when they come to the campus. Also, more school officials are heading back to Asia. Phone and email contact is on the rise. “These parents want to support their children by being as involved in their school lives as they can be, and I see that trend increasing in all of our Priory communities throughout Asia,” said Al Zappelli, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. Spain: Parents Virginia and David Taylor, with Anna, Geoffrey and Katherine, were in Barcelona in 2003-4, and are now back at the Priory. France Alumni Parents Margaret and Michael Herzen are spending a year in France with Juliana, Priory class of 2006.

International Benedictine Youth Congress for Peace Congress at the Priory About 170 teenagers and adults from Benedictine schools around the world experienced four days of communitybuilding and shared faith at the Second Annual International Benedictine Youth Congress, hosted last summer by Woodside Priory School and the monastic community. The theme was peace, and the camaraderie created was successful beyond even the leaders’ expectations. Many members of the Priory community stepped forward to help host, and Brother Edward Englund, who headed the Priory’s team, worked for several months to assure a safe and rewarding experience for everyone. I hope you will enjoy the photos and quotes from the event that are interspersed throughout the annual report pages.

“St. Benedict has provided all of us a line that connects us…not in words but in thoughts. We may not hear or understand each other (in language), but using the ‘ear of our hearts’ we can be one big family, and that’s enough to break barriers.” Student, International Youth Congress

Editor’s note: While English was the language of the Congress , students’ reflections were also written in Korean and German. The student’s or translator’s use of language was preserved as much as possible.

Cindy and Wayne Davison received a well-deserved standing ovation for their leadership of the Mad Hatter’s Ball. Auction 2005, which they have agreed to chair, couldn’t be in more experienced hands—it will be the eleventh auction that they have chaired or taken leadership roles in since their daughter, Amanda (Class of 2000), enrolled in sixth grade.

“Every year, I think the auction can’t get better, and every year the wonderful people who make it possible prove me wrong. It DOES get better. I am already looking forward to next year.” –Martin Mager, OSB Superior of the Benedictine Community

“Volunteers at the Priory are really a wonderful group, and they make working on the auction a lot of fun. It is because of them that Wayne and I join in producing the auctions over and over again.” Cindy Davison, Co-Chair The Mad Hatter’s Ball

At the Priory on Nov. 9, 2004 Classical Harpist

Catrin Finch 7 p.m. in the Chapel* Fireside reception No charge, RSVP to preed@woodsidepriory.com

• First Prize Winner, 2000 Young Concert Artists International Auditions • Royal Harpist to the Prince of Wales • Victor Salvi Foundation Grant • 2000 Princeton University Concerts Prize • 2000 Orchestra New England Soloist Prize • First Prize, 1999 Lily Laskine International Harp Competition (Deauville, France)

“Young Concert Artists concluded its 40th anniversary with a most impressive recital by harpist Catrin Finch. She has a relaxed, graceful way of handling the instrument, natural charm and pose on stage, and an apparently unlimited palette of colors and nuances. Bach’s ‘Italian Concerto’ had classical crispness and clarity of line and voicing, and Debussy pieces had character and atmosphere. In Godefroid’s ‘Carnival of Venice,’ which ended the program, Catrin Finch reveled in her own virtuosity with stunning, carefree ease, playing with impeccable rhythmic poise and eliciting a rainbow of colors from her instrument. It brought the house down.” –New York Concert Review *Catrin Finch is one of several world class musicians who perform in an occasional series at the Priory through an arrangement with Young Concert Artists Inc in New York and the sponsorship of a parent in the Priory community.
