America's Edge in the Politics of Global Investing A guide by Jessica Austin

Unlike most Global investment advisors and strategists, I pay close attention to politics, both here in the United States and in foreign markets. The politics of a country tells me a lot about the likelihood of economic growth and long-term stability, vital ingredients for a successful investment. It also reveals the culture, the business climate and the durability of a country as a result of crises such as the real estate slowdown. Countries with free and open political systems can receive blunt blows and fight again.

And although we do not know if the Dow will go up or down tomorrow, we do know that, after midnight, the citizens of Dixville Notch will be, as usual, the first American citizens to vote in the New Hampshire presidential primaries.

The current presidential campaign really has my blood pumping. The race between Senator Clinton and Senator Obama has been turned upside down with John Edwards competing for an opening. The Republican race is even more fluid and open with the sudden rise of former Governor Huckabee who represents a threat to former Governor Romney, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani losing strength in national polls and reorienting his efforts to large states like California and Florida. All this movement has created an opening for the old lion, Senator John McCain, whose campaign was left for dead only a few months ago and is organizing a comeback in New Hampshire.

For a political junkie like me, there's nothing better than this. Chinese leaders love to describe American democracy as a "democracy of sacks of money," but the current race emphasizes that problems, personality and strategy can often triumph over money. Mr. Huckabee won in Iowa despite spending more than 20 to 1, the upstart Obama has matched the money from the Clinton money machine to the dollar by collecting small donations and McCain is back in action despite his budget of bus.

Equally important, even candidates who are in the latest surveys can raise money with a conviction platform. Texas libertarian congressman Ron Paul recently broke the one-day fundraising record, raising more than $ 5 million through an online campaign. Then there is the relatively civil conduct of our campaigns and the fair, smooth transfer of executive power. Sure politics everywhere is a contact sport but we look pretty good compared to the fisticuffs last month in South Korea, the chaotic situation in Pakistan, and the ham-handed turnover of power in Russia from Mr. Putin to well - Mr. Putin.
