“Gracie was a girly girl who liked to get dirty and at the same time loved pink.”

Bobbi Jo Haught served as Payson’s junior varsity softball coach for several years. Gracie Lee would often accompany her mother to practices and games. She was just 3 years old when she tragically died in a heart-wrenching accident in February of 2004. Payson coaches and softball supporters had been planning to begin a softball tournament and they decided to do just that in her honor the next year. “She’s the reason we had the idea for a tournament 11 years ago,” said former Payson High softball player and coach Kadi Tenney. “The year we were really thinking about doing it for the next year, Gracie passed away and we felt this was the perfect time to do it. We were paying respect to Gracie and Bobbi Jo, who was a big part of our program for a long time.” Tenney said naming the tournament in her honor was a natural decision. “Gracie loved everyone and everyone loved her,” Tenney said. “Gracie was a girly girl who liked to get dirty at the same time and she loved pink.” That’s why the color is so prevalent at the tournament, with several teams wearing pink shirts and socks and others incorporating at least some pink accessory into their uniforms. Payson wears hot pink shirts with a “Gracie’s Girls” logo across the front, as well as hot pink socks. “Teams all wear pink and it’s a sight to see,” said Payson varsity assistant coach Will Dunman. “A lot of teams try to incorporate some type of pink into their uniforms and everyone knows who it’s for.” In 2012, the tournament added a Spirit of Gracie Award, which celebrates and awards good character. Benson, one of three teams along with Payson and Lakeside Blue Ridge to play in every Gracie Haught Classic, earned that award in 2012. Her family started the Gracie Lee Haught Children’s Memorial Fund to help families around the Rim Country pay medical bills and to help promote the safety and well-being of children. Benson High decided to hold a fundraiser in their little town every year and donate the proceeds to the GLH Fund. “This is the true Spirit of Gracie that we want to promote and celebrate every year,” a tournament newsletter states. “We hope that every team that participates in our tournament will catch the Spirit and manifest it in their own way through service, exemplary sportsmanship, or whatever way seems appropriate.” Goodyear Estrella Foothills won the award in 2013 and Phoenix Sunnyslope last year. The award is handed out at the tournament’s Eighth Inning Social, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday in the Julia Randall Elementary gym. It’s a unique part of the tournament that sets it apart from other tournaments. “Basically, our idea was to have something fun for the girls to do on Friday night where they would have to intermingle with other teams,” Tenney said. “Usually it’s all about your team and we wanted to create an opportunity for there to be friendships across teams. So it’s about the camaraderie, giving girls the opportunity to get together and have fun and watch their coaches have dance offs, play volleyball, basically make fools of themselves. We’re encouraging the girls to have fun and make friends across teams and enjoy the sport in all its aspects, not just the competition of it.”
Tragic loss proved an inspiration for joyful tournament

Winslow softball team a class act BY KEITH MORRIS
ROUNDUP SPORTS EDITOR
Winslow High has won a lot of softball games in the last several years. On Saturday, March 22, 2014, they won something else — the hearts of softball fans everywhere. The Gracie Haught Classic was established 11 years ago as a memorial to a little girl. More than anything else, this unique tournament honors good sportsmanship. Last year’s tournament ended with Winslow players providing the best example of good sportsmanship you’ll ever find. The Division 3 Bulldogs led Division 1 Surprise Willow Canyon 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when an injury-free tournament ended in a shocking way as Willow Canyon sophomore right fielder Lacey Colvin and senior second baseman Alexis Encarnacion collided while chasing a fly ball in short right field. Both players suffered injuries and were taken to Payson Regional Medical Center. Willow Canyon head coach Donnie Tizzano informed officials and Winslow head coach Kelli Fifelski that he would be departing Payson High to follow his kids to the hospital. Normally, Willow Canyon would have forfeited the tournament championship to Winslow. And, technically, Winslow will go down as going 6-0 and winning the tournament to improve to 15-0 on the season. However, Winslow players discussed the situation and, in a remarkable display of sportsmanship, gave the firstplace trophy to Willow Canyon. Both teams gathered together on the infield while EMTs cared for the two players in right field. Tears rolled down the cheeks of Willow Canyon players and Winslow players hugged them as they collectively prayed for the injured girls. Minutes later, Tizzano hugged each and every member of the Winslow team, thanking them for their kind gesture. “It’s the whole feel of the tournament, we appreciate it so much and it’s a great gesture by Winslow,” Tizzano said. “But with the quality of people, coaches and the players that we’ve seen here, it’s really not surprising that that happened. They were really concerned for our girls. All competition was over. Everybody was a big softball family. We got support everywhere we need it. “It’s great. This is our third year in the tournament and we’ll be back every year as long as I’m coaching. “The spirit of the competition is there, but in the end, everybody knows why we’re here and what

we’re trying to accomplish. It’s the best tournament that we play in every year.” Tournament director Charlene Brown said this isn’t a typical tournament. “What’s so special about this tournament is that it does have a special spirit about it,” she said. “The girls exhibit such great sportsmanship when they’re here. It’s not only just building good softball players and playing good softball, but we encourage good

citizenship. So that’s what we try to impress upon them — to play good sports but be a good person, too.” Her daughter, Kadi Tenney, the 2014 Payson High varsity head coach, echoed her statement. “The fact that we make it a memorial to Gracie has turned it into sort of an atmosphere where everyone tries to be a little more sportsmanlike, show a little more good character and then come together with a little bit more

camaraderie between teams,” Tenney said. “Yeah, we want to play hard and we want to win. But the most important thing is good character, sportsmanship.” Winslow players and coaches have clearly picked up on that. The Bulldogs went on to finish the year 30-1, reaching the Division 3/Class 3A state title game for a sixth consecutive season and beating Payson 5-3 to claim their second state crown in that period. But their unselfish gesture during the Gracie Haught Classic will shine as bright as any championship they might go on to win. “If that happened with our team, it would just be devastating,” said Winslow coach Kelli Fifelski. “And we know the toll it’s going take on their team if it’s serious injuries with them. So we hope everything turns out alright. God be with them and God bless that entire team.” The Bulldogs know all too well what it means to suffer a loss. The program and school is still trying to cope with the loss of former coach Becky Barris, who led Winslow to the 2010 3A title. Barris died in an automobile accident three years ago. Like any Payson fan, I was pulling for the Longhorns to win their first state championship last season. But I’m glad it was the Bulldogs that won the championship if they couldn’t. And I wasn’t alone.

The Gracie Haught Classic has grown from an eightteam tournament its first year to 20 teams this year. The number of participants grew to as many as 21 in 2012 and ’13 but organizers reduced the number to 20 last season because an even number made setting up pools and scheduling easier. More schools would like to participate, but organizers believe 20 is the ideal number. Over the years, 41 schools have participated. Along with Payson, the seven other schools participating in the first event in 2005 included: Chandler Basha, Benson, Lakeside Blue Ridge, Goodyear Estrella Foothills, Gilbert Higley, Avondale La Joya and Queen Creek. Benson and Blue Ridge are the only teams to join the Longhorns in appearing in all 10 of the tournaments held so far. Camp Verde, Eloy Santa Cruz, Estrella Foothills and Show Low are playing in the tournament for the seventh consecutive season, while Snowflake and Winslow are playing in the tournament for the sixth straight year. The tournament features quality competition. The tournament winner has gone on to win the Class 3A/ Division 3 state championship the same year three times — Winslow in 2010 (Class 3A), Estrella Foothills 2011, Winslow in 2014 (Division 3).

Many teams in the Gracie Haught Classic wear pink in memory of Gracie and in support of causes like breast cancer prevention. The tournament draws 20 teams from all over the state, providing a preview of the upcoming season — as teams face off against arch-rivals and teams they rarely get to play in the regular season. The event brings crowds to Payson. For the weekend of the tournament, softball players and their families fill every hotel and restaurant.

Action from last year’s Payson vs. Holbrook pool play game in the 10th Annual Gracie Haught Classic. Both teams wore pink jerseys, which is encouraged in the tournament because pink was Gracie’s favorite color and tournament organizers want all the players to embrace being girls.
