BEELINE CRUISE-IN CAR SHOW

Classic cars make Rim Country sparkle for weekend Payson’s Green Valley Park is the community’s crown jewel — the magnificent Mogollon Rim is its crowning glory. Each year the joys of summer fun are welcomed by a nostalgic look at the past with the annual Rim Country Classic Auto Club’s Beeline Cruise-In Car Show. This is the 22nd year the members of the club and their guests from throughout the Southwest have shared their extraordinarily beautiful, lovingly restored antique, vintage and classic automobiles. The show “informally” opens the afternoon of Friday, April 24 with the traditional cruise around Payson. Show participants that are already in town for Saturday’s big event line up at Green Valley Park and cruise through town for the viewing pleasure of residents, visitors and those lucky souls who just happen to be passing through.

Leaving Green Valley Park, the cruisers head west on Country Club Road and then north on Vista. A short westerly jog on Bulla and a cross over to Airport Road takes the parade of prized cars east on Airport down to the roundabout beside the Elks Lodge where they will go north on Beeline to the Tyler Parkway (Home Depot) roundabout and then take Tyler over to East Highway 260. At the Tyler and 260 light the group will head west again and then go north when it gets to Beeline, ending at the Payson Elks Lodge. At the lodge, participants in the show will have their traditional burger burn. This part of the festivities is not open to the public. The car show formally takes place from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m., Saturday, April 25 — the ending time is flexible because the day’s awards are presented beginning at

3 p.m. and just as with televised awards shows, the conclusion is always a little up in the air. While the awards are a participant-only event, the raffle drawing is an all-comers activity — just buy tickets and see what you get to take home. There will be vendors selling all manner of automotive supplies, food, beverages and more, along with the exhibitors. Ken Gunderson, show co-chairman, said a week before the event about 150 people had registered to participate. Many more are expected to register just before the show. Gunderson said because last year’s event was rained out, quite a few would-be participants are waiting to see what kind of weather is predicted for the weekend. Proceeds from entry fees and space rent from vendors help the Rim Country Classic Auto Club make annual awards to area

Rim Country Classic Auto Club gives to local charities

The Rim Country Classic Auto Club (RCCAC) had its beginnings in the early 1980s when a few people shared a common interest in restoring and driving classic cars. They cruised around Payson where they met and talked about their cars. The RCCAC organization is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of classic automobiles and street rods as well as participating in and supporting civic activities for the betterment of the community. As the group flourished, the number of members grew. The club was officially organized in 1993. The membership has dramatically increased over the years, with more than 70 families participating. Within the membership there are more than 100 classic automobiles and hot rods, both restored or in progress. RCCAC members participate in car-related activities ranging from day trips, to breakfast or lunch gatherings to talk cars, taking classic cars to visit local retirement homes or the Prescott VA Hospital, honoring veterans, attending car shows throughout the state, and taking longer car cruises, including the Route 66 Fun Run in Seligman, Ariz. Most folks in Payson know RCCAC through the annual Beeline Cruise-In Car Show that the club holds at the end of April. In 1994, RCCAC members held their first car show with six entrants to help charities in the town of Payson. The 2013 car show drew more than 225 cars. This event has grown from a small, local event to one of the premier car shows in Arizona. Participants come from many western states to display their cars in a splendid mountain setting. COMMUNITY BENEFITS

The many participants and car show enthusiasts make a mark on the local economy, staying at area motels and hotels, and eating at area restaurants.

Proceeds from the car show help support a wide variety of local charities. Members presented $1,000 each to nine area charities from the RCCAC’s 2014 Beeline Cruise-In. The charities were nominated and selected by the club membership. President Steve Fowler said nominations for awards from the club must be made by a member of RCCAC, groups cannot solicit assistance. Receiving awards were the Forget Me Nots, which raises money to help the area’s Alzheimer’s disease caregiver support group; Payson Senior Center; Kaitie’s Closet, which collects and distributes clothing primarily to school children; the Pine Strawberry Food Bank; St. Vincent de Paul – Rim Country Food Bank; Senior Center Affairs Foundation – Pine/Strawberry; the Humane Society of Central Arizona; Payson Helping Payson; and Tonto Rim Search and Rescue. While the 2014 show was rained out, there was still money to donate to the charities on July 11, 2014 — the date of July 11 was selected for the awards because it was the fifth annual National Collector Car Appreciation Day, as declared by the U.S. Senate in a resolution. The car show’s success comes from the overwhelming support received from the Town of Payson, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Payson Roundup along with generous businesses in Payson and surrounding towns, organizers said. AN OPEN INVITATION

The Rim Country Classic Auto Club has its regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Tiny’s Restaurant. The general meetings are open to the public and the members welcome guests whether they own a collector’s vehicle or not.

BEELINE CRUISE-IN CAR SHOW

The joys of being part of the RCCAC BY DOUG MAGNUSON RCCAC MEMBER

Twenty-one years have come and gone since my wife Sherrill and I joined our local car club here in Payson — what is now known as Rim Country Classic Auto Club (RCCAC). In the beginning, people like Rolley Lee, Larry Bertram, Tom Clark, Steve Johnson and Richard Brooks (just to name a few of the many great guys) would bring memories of car club meetings, shows, cruises and fun-filled activities of days gone by. Membership for us began with an article in the Payson Roundup. It was an invitation to interested parties in forma-

3 Annual rd

tion of a car club. It said come to a meeting at Phil White Ford in Star Valley. At that time our Street Rod “Rachel” was at home in pieces, and not running. No matter, I was still interested in the camaraderie of the guys and to listen to their car stories. Many days and maybe a year went by after joining and regularly attending meetings. At first the meetings were mostly members with early Fords conducting mini-seminars and providing valuable information on exactly what a Ford part actually is. Looking back, this association, it turns out, was encouragement to get Rachel back on the road again and accomplish the ultimate, which was more than just talk. But I would rather show that she was for real. Time rolled on, I don’t recall any particular meeting location

after Phil White Ford — until the wives began attending meetings at the Crosswinds Restaurant. We grew so that they were not able to accommodate us and we moved to the casino. Then manager Mark Kapland was instrumental in this, along with providing raffle prizes every month for our drawings. This went on for a few years at the Mazatzal Casino. But as with every club, leadership changes, membership from the community and those with a common interest starts out friendly. New people come and members move on for one reason or other. We’ve been fortunate to always find someone that wants to be in charge, this helps pull others to keep the club rolling along. The social aspect keeps membership interesting and busy with get-togethers of various types (eg: car cruises, car shows and new

eating locations.) Despite any negatives there are many solid benefits. If people couldn’t ever overcome collective difficulties, we’d all still be living in caves. The knowledge and experience of the senior (meaning long term) members is invaluable for new ones. Our club is an important source of parts, information and cars, plus they provide that much-needed human feeling of connection. RCCAC could be likened to a bowling team: monogrammed shirts and cool club hats and jackets somehow help bring it all together. Twenty-one years to the present our club has changed, many neat and wonderful people have come and gone. Problems have been solved and most assuredly more will come along to be solved. What this proves is a club

can stay together as long as the members get along and don’t lose sight of the common goal and purpose. This common goal, whether it’s strictly social or for charity fundraising, etc., needs to be established from the start with all new members. This ensures that everyone is on the same page from the beginning, and eliminates lots of future problems arising from individual assumptions. Proactive handling of problems like this usually will prevent negative reaction and keep a club running smoothly, and hopefully help prevent you from getting clubbed by a club. As my good friend and club member Tom Gossard says, “Happy Trails partner and safe travels.” (Some parts of the article were taken from Hemmings Muscle Machine, December 2005)

The Vickie Special – Tom Gossard I grew up in Burbank, Calif. in the late 1950s. It seemed the streets were full of early 1930s hot-rodded, fenderless Fords. It was the dream of many of my friends and myself to own one some day. But first we had to wait until we were old enough to have a driver’s license. Until that day we were restricted to balloon tire bicycles. Our bikes got us to junior high school, to the markets to read hot rod magazines and to do our paper routes. Perhaps to emulate the older boys’ cars, we would strip down our Schwinn bikes by taking off the fenders and chain guards. It also called attention to how “cool” we were compared to other youngsters that kept those parts on. We did pay a price though, because when crossing a street with running water without the fenders our backs would be sprayed with muddy water. Our moms paid the price too when it came time to do the laundry. The auto industry was still in its infancy. The older men whom went racing were developing new and innovative parts for car drivetrains and engines. There was an opportunity to create parts easily adapted to engines and a marketplace in young hot rodders who wanted to go faster than the stock motors permitted. Among these innovators were Stu Hilborn working on fuel injection; Barnie Navarro and Edelbrock, who were making aluminum heads and multi-carburetor intake manifolds; Clay Smith and Iskerdrian started making hot cam shafts; and Holley was making racing carburetors. A young hot rodder could go to local junk yards to find newer car parts to be adapted to his car. Some of the skilled craftsmen adapted the Airhart disc brakes to the front on their race cars. It would take another 15 years or so until the new car manufacturers in Detroit started to use parts developed by hot rodders. All this came together for the car buff to go racing on the many drag strips around Southern California. To prove how fast these cars were, there was also a lot of street racing going on. Sometimes money was exchanged, but mostly it was egos. These kids with hot cars drove them on the streets to get to work, college, on dates and to drag strips. By the late 1960s cars were dedicated to the race track only and were towed to the strips. Hot rods were losing their popularity. So, this was the era I grew up in and it created a love with racing and old cars. There has always been a hot car in my

garage, but in 1981 there was an empty stall that needed to be filled. So, the hunt was on for the rare 1932 Ford Victoria. A friend gave me a lead on one located 60 miles away in the town of Moore Park. A call was made to the owner and the trip there took place on the weekend. As we walked into the owner’s back yard to view the car, he said he found the car locally, abandoned in a walnut grove. The 1932 Fords have a roof made of weather-proof cloth, felt and chick wire supported by wooden bows. And there sat a rusty Victoria with the front fender sticking up through a missing roof. Shocking. But I saw and old race car, the top of the car was chopped 3-1/2 inches (that is lowering the top by taking out a section of the metal sides), a dropped front axle with added drum brakes, a later Ford VA flathead motor, a 1939 transmission, and a 1940 rear-end. It should have had a gas tank sitting in back of the body, but it was missing and the rear fram horns were even cut off. That meant the gas tank, which was long gone, would have been inside the cab. In its time it was a full-on race car. Yep, it was a rough start, but it was just what was wanted and I loved it. A deal was struck and the old, gutted Victoria ended up in my garage. The body work was started and it was lifted from the frame. The frame had new cross members welded in and boxed to support the power of a hot rodded Chevy V8. A strong, newer Ford read axle was bolted in and a Chevy manual transmission was added. The frame was sanded and then painted black. New wood was custom fitted to the inner body, and then it was bolted back on the frame. It was now a rolling chassis and taken to a body shop with a paint booth to paint in Mercedes vanilla. Taken back to my shop, I painted the rest of the parts and the car was assembled and electrically wired. It all came together and it was an exciting day when the engine was fired up and then driven around the block. Because she is a Victoria, the old race car, as tradition dictates, was christened the “Vickie Special” and lettered on the cowl. That was more than 24 years ago and the car has been driven to many car shows around the Southwest. When racing down the quarter-mile drag strip, or putting the pedal to the metal passing on the freeways, I wonder, “Did I tighten all of the bolts?” With the resurrection of this old drag racer, I wanted the outside to look like a 1950s hot rod, but out of sight, underneath, to have an updated drivetrain for drivability and dependability.

This 1940 Deluxe Ford Convertible belongs to Sandi and Byron Gunderson. Its restoration began in Arkansas and then moved to Colorado. It now resides in Payson, Ariz. with Byron and Sandi.

1947 Ford Coupe – Ken Gunderson No ... That is not James Dean standing in front of the black 1947 Ford Coupe. It is 1954 and that is Ken Gunderson with his pride and joy. “Every spare buck I could scrape up went into this car,” said Gunderson. Fast forward 60 years and here I am again in front of the Melo Yellow 1947 Ford. Melo cost a lot more than old Blackie, but it is worth every

penny. It has a Ford racing 351 Windsor engine; custom interior; Mustang front end; power brakes; power steering; and American Racing custom wheels; and there is much more. Gunderson invites everyone to come out to the 2015 Beeline Cruise-In at Green Valley Park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can even have your picture taken with Melo, he said.

1956 Ford Customline – Linda & Frank Schaefer We have had this car since 2001. It’s been from the coast of California to Deadwood, S.D. on numerous trips. This car is a “driver” — always ready to go long distance. It’s powered by a later Ford 351 engine with an overdrive transmission, disc brakes, air conditioning, etc.

1962 Plymouth Sport Fury – Julie & Larry Coleman

Julie and Larry Coleman found this 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury in a wrecking yard in Napa, Calif. in 1994. The restoration took four years, thousands of man-hours and dollars. Nine 1962 Plymouths had to be purchased because restoration parts were not available. The Colemans restored the Fury to its original condition in 1998. It is a Golden Commando car, big block, automatic. Red is the original color, with black and red interior.
