Get out to Green Valley Park Saturday, April 27 and get a close look at great old cars at the Rim Country Classic Auto Club’s 2013 Beeline Cruise-In. This is the 20th year the show has been presented. Would you believe when it was first held, there were only six cars displayed?

About the RCCAC and the show The Rim Country Classic Auto Club, as it is known it today, had its beginnings in the early 1980s when a few people shared a common interest in restoring and driving classic cars. They cruised around Payson where they met and talked about their cars. As the group flourished, the number of members grew. Phil White Ford (now Chapman Auto Center) became the main meeting place with the management providing a meeting room upstairs. The club was officially organized in 1993. Today, the membership has dramatically increased, with more than 72 families participating. Within the membership there are more than 100 classic automobiles and hot

rods, both restored or in progress. The Rim Country Classic Auto Club members participate in carrelated activities ranging from day trips to breakfast or lunch, visits to local retirement homes or the Prescott VA Hospital, to longer cruises including the “Route 66 Fun Run” in Seligman, Ariz. In 1994, Rim Country Classic Auto Club members held their first car show with six entrants to help charities in the town of Payson. This event has grown from a small, local event to one of the premier car shows in Arizona. Participants come from many western states to display their cars in a splendid mountain setting. Proceeds from the show now help support a wide variety of local charities.

1962 Corvette Convertible - John & MJ Hall The ’vette is a V-8, with 327 cubic inch Small Block, 250 Horsepower, 4-speed transmission and is white over red with a black top. This is the Halls’ sixth year enjoying their ’vette and the sixth year they have entered it in the Beeline Cruise-In. “We think that our license plate ‘Mint 62’ perfectly describes our matching numbers

car,” the Halls said. The only changes they have made are a new radiator and water pump, new seatbelts, floor mats and a set of American Racing wheels and new tires. Other than these changes, the car is stock. “We can’t think of a better car for enjoying the beauty of the Rim Country!” the Halls said.

John and Mary Cailey’s

’27 Ford Roadster & ’79 Chrysler 300 By Mary Cailey I’ve always loved cars. I remember riding the school bus to high school in Indiana in the mid ’60s and looking at the cars lined up at a nearby Ford dealership. I always looked at the early 1920s truck with the wooden slatted truck bed and huge chrome grill used as advertising for the dealership and thought what a cool ride that would be. As time went on, with marriage and kids and moving to Illinois, I forgot this love of cars until the kids were in high school themselves and I got my first Mustang convertible in 1989. I kept that car for 10 years and then bought my second Mustang convertible in 1998. Oh how I love driving around with the top down! In 2000 I had the opportunity to purchase a 1978 silver anniversary edition, L82 Corvette. It had Ttops, so I still had the wind blowing in my hair. What a ride! Two years later I learned how to ride a motorcycle and in 2003 I bought a 1450 cc Heritage Softail Classic Harley. Now that was a ride, and talk about the wind in your hair, well, almost, I always did wear a helmet. By 2004 I had sold the Corvette and I sold the bike in 2005. In the meantime, in 2004, we had an unbelievable opportunity to buy our second 1979 Chrysler 300 (only 3,811 were ever built, and all but 5 were painted the signature “Spinnaker White” color) and with only 26,000 original miles. My husband, John, already had one, so this second 1979 Chrysler 300 was bought for me. We had ‘his’ and ‘hers’ matching cars. John did a restoration on my car, fixing the ‘moon roof’ (1 of 256 with this option), replacing the dented right front quarter panel, and after sending it out for painting, he replaced the red and blue pin striping. We turned many heads when we both drove our matching cars to local cars shows. Midway through 2012, John told me he’d build or restore another car for me of my choice. I still had the love of old trucks, such as the late ’40s and early ’50s Chevys, but more so was my love of the wind blowing in my hair, so I knew I wanted a topless car. I started looking at hot rods and when the annual car auctions came to the Valley in January of this year, we decided to look into the cars being sold at the Russo and Steele auction. I signed up for a “bidder’s” pass and two weeks before the auction, I started looking through their list of cars to be auctioned. A bright yellow, 1927 Ford Roadster caught my eye. When we arrived at the auction on the first day, I looked for this yellow car and, finding it listed to be sold that day, I made sure we were in the bidders’ stands when it went up for auction. It looked so pretty under those big lights as it was driven into the auction hall. I had a set price in my head that I wasn’t going to exceed and, luckily, I was within my limit when that gavel came down and “Sold, Sold, Sold” was announced. John was sitting next to me in the

stands, but was looking the other way when the gavel came down. I turned to him and said, “Well, we just bought another car!” Come see our matching his and hers “300s” and also my ‘new’ ’27 Roadster, which I’ve named “Buttercup” at the Rim Country Classic Automobile Club Beeline Cruise-In Car Show. We’ll be parked with the other Rim Country Classic Car Club cars in the Zane Grey Museum parking lot on Green Valley Parkway. By John Cailey I started drag racing back in the ’60s when I was in my 20s and flagmen were used to start the races. I drove a ’63 Plymouth Max Wedge 426 and did quite well at the many Midwest tracks, such as Union Grove in Wisconsin, Rockford Dragway (now Byron Raceway) in Byron, Ill., as well as at many of the now gone tracks such as Oswego Race Track in Oswego, Ill. In the late ’60s I teamed up with two other local racers and professionally raced the same 426 Max

Wedge engine, but in a 1964 Dodge 330 in the AHRA (American Hot Rod Association) Midwest Division. In 1968 this car held the ET (Elapsed Time) and speed records for the ‘5’ Stock Automatic Class. After getting married and having kids, I stopped racing in 1970. My Dad called me 1994 and said he could no longer drive and if I wanted to have his 1979 Chrysler 300, I could fly out to Washington State and drive it home. As I drove the car home to Illinois, I decided to work on it a bit and then sell it. However, as I put time into the car, I decided to keep it and try racing it. So here I go again, 32 years later, driving my Dad’s ’79 Chrysler 300 down the quarter-mile asphalt of Byron Dragway in 2002. This car weighed 4,000 pounds and it felt like driving a box of Velveeta cheese. My times were OK, starting with an ET of 13.50 seconds and speed of 99 mph with the stock 360 engine. After a year, I bought a 360 engine out of a motor home and built a 408 stroker motor. Eventually I was able to put the big 300 into the high 11-second range. As time went on, I got tired of my 11-second car, so in the fall of 2012, with the blessings of my wife, I decided to make my 300 go faster and installed a blower on my 408 motor. I then pulled some of the weight off the car, removed the front and back seats, and installed an 8-point roll cage. As with anything, I’ve gone through a series of trials and errors with my blown Chrysler 300, but to date, my best time is a 10.50 ET at 128 mph. Look for my 300, the “Moby Dick II”, at the car show!

1958 Nash Metro Convertible - The Fowlers Steve and Margie Fowler are an unusual pair of car enthusiasts in that both get actively involved in the construction of their cars. Steve’s background as a retired community college auto tech instructor gives him the knowledge to accomplish all the mechanical and electrical chores required, and a couple of short stints teaching basic auto body and painting gave him enough skill to tangle with that part, though he freely confesses he’s no expert. Margie’s contributions come in the interior and overall color design. She has taught classes in costume design, and many years and cars ago started doing the upholstery on the many cars they have redone over the years. Before Steve’s retirement and their relocation back to Arizona, they ran a small business in custom auto upholstery and related services. They are both actively involved in the Rim Country Classic Auto Club, Steve currently serving as president, and Margie being last year’s car show chair, positions they both have held in another club before they relocated here. In the early years of their marriage, while they were raising a small herd of kids, Steve bought and sold a lot of cars as a way to earn extra money, and Margie frequently helped redo the interiors, acquiring skills along the way. Then for a number of years, Steve took up flying as a hobby and didn’t go through multiple cars every year. But after medical issues effectively grounded him, they joined the street rod scene, doing a ’26 Ford Track Roadster (since sold), then a ’35 Packard that Margie claims as hers, a ’53 Studebaker that’s all his, a ’47 Stude Truck that was sold to finance their shop, and now their current project, a ’58 Nash Metropolitan Convertible, which they had acquired and saved as a project to keep them occupied in retirement for a while. The Metro, nicknamed Minnie (as in Mouse), was acquired as an abandoned project from a fellow that realized it needed more work than he could do or afford to have done. The car was originally from Arizona, and was dragged to northern California then back here before its resurrection. The resurrection involved replacing floors and some

framework that was completely rusted out, straightening essentially every panel to some degree, swapping in more modern chassis pieces as well as a modern injected V-6 with a 5 speed, completely redoing the dash and electrical system, then a complete replacement of the interior with a newer design and painting the exterior in a classic Metro red-andwhite color scheme. In the process, every bit of the work other than the final buffing of the clear coat (thanks to Jodell at Chore Solutions for his fine work) was done by the two over the last year and a half. Miss Minnie (Mouse) will make her debut at the Rim Country Classic Auto Club 20th Annual Beeline Cruise-In Car Show, coming topless, but still G rated. Miss Minnie’s tale Our Metropolitan’s story starts with a couple of shattered dreams, but has some interesting twists to it. A doctor in northern California travelled all the way to Casa Grande, Ariz. to buy a project car from Wiseman’s Auto Salvage, a wrecking yard known for years for its collection of old cars. After hauling the car all the way home, he discovered that he had really bitten off way more than he could chew. The little ragtop had sat topless for years, and even in Arizona, that leads to problems. The floor of the car was completely rusted away, the interior was practically non-existent, and the mechanicals were in only fair shape. He decided to donate the car to the local college auto tech program as a project. The program already had too many project cars, but it was decided to accept the donation with the idea of selling the car as-is to add funds to the student scholarship account. In time, the little flamed yellow

hulk was sold, and came into the possession of Steve and Margie Fowler. They then dragged it back to Arizona upon retirement to begin the restoration process, with the idea of doing a simple car on a retiree’s budget. Left over from another failed project was an engine and transmission from a 1986 Firebird that had been destined to be swapped into an RX-7, but the project was abandoned, and they had purchased the parts to help the owner recoup his investment. It turns out that this engine will squeeze nicely into the Met’s engine bay and is powerful enough to wake up the performance without overwhelming the car. So the die was cast, and the project got underway late in the fall of 2011. The remains of the old floor was carved away and rectangular tubing was used to replace and reinforce the frame structure, after which a flat floor of heavier gauge sheet metal was formed and welded in. Mounts were fabricated to install the engine and transmission and a new tunnel cover was fabricated to cover the transmission while allowing for future access and service, if needed. Some research turned up the fact that many chassis parts were shared with MG Midgets, and so some scrounging acquired the parts to upgrade the front suspension, rear axle and brakes to more modern designs. Some additional swapping and fabrication got a safer tandem master cylinder and hydraulic clutch system adapted in. The rest of the chassis was gone through and brought up to snuff so it should be safe on the road. The electrical system was in tatters, so the car was completely rewired to allow for the electronic controls on the fuel-injected engine,

as well as new control switches for everything else. The Fowlers were able to rescue a few critical items such as the “Trafficator” turn signal switch that is installed in the center of the steering wheel, and the heater and wiper parts. The stock steering wheel was large in diameter, so with a spare as a starting point, it was cut down and remanufactured a couple of inches smaller. The gauge cluster was toast, and a rebuilt one is very pricey, so it was found after a little research that a Jeep CJ cluster could be adapted (readily available and reasonably priced) and is nearly identical in appearance. A radiator for a 6 cylinder early Mustang turns out to be an easy and inexpensive replacement for the well-used stock one. A number of other parts were modified or fabricated to complete the mechanical transformation. Bucket seats from a Chrysler import were modified a little and recovered, as well as custom-made door and side panels and rear seat parts to complete the interior. Early on, it was decided to go with a red-and-white exterior color scheme similar to the factory, but with an interior scheme that focused around the hounds-tooth fabric used originally but with a few embellishments to spiff it up a bit. The Fowlers have a friend with a stock hardtop version of this car in the same colors that he calls Mickey (Mouse), so we decided ours would be Minnie, as she is pretty small. And so, with a little more power, a straightened, repaired and painted body and a completely redone interior, Minnie is ready to hit the road and give the Fowlers some driving pleasure on the kind of mild days that convertibles love and that we have in such abundance in Arizona.

’49 Crosley Pickup Truck - Larry Bertram Larry Bertram’s little truck’s life began in 1949 as a 1/8th-ton pickup with a tiny 22 hp, 4-cylinder engine. It cost $849. It was a bare bones vehicle with a simple bench seat with very little padding and a plain cardboard interior. It was found in a Montana field in 1960. However it wasn’t until 1991 that life began again in Larry’s shop. When it was decided to upgrade the horsepower, everything in the drive train had to be upgraded as well. This included converting to hydraulic brakes, a 3.81 modified Buick engine, a GM 350 transmission and narrowed Ford rear end. The entire vehicle is only 47-1/2 inches wide with a pickup bed measuring 46 inches wide, with 24 inches between the tubed wheel wells.

The only unmodified Crosley parts are the front axle and the rear springs. The entire frame, brakes, electrical system, steering components, fuel and cooling systems were custom-made in house. The body is stock with a red and black clear coat paint job. The interior, with modified bucket seats, is completely upholstered. The original version had cardboard panels and headliner and a metal bench seat. Larry did all fabrications and modifications, with the exception of the paint job, window installation and upholstery. The effort took from 1991 until April 2013 According to the best information available, there are fewer than 15 remaining 1949 Crosley pickup trucks left in operation.

1923 T Bucket - Otis & Dee Jayy Wells We joined the Rim Country Classic Auto Club after moving to Payson. We both enjoy cars. My husband has a 1972 Dodge Demon, it was featured at the 1972 L.A. Car Show. I told him I would like a car of my own. Five years ago on my birthday, we went to California and bought my ’23 T Bucket. It’s a sweet ride, it has 440 Mopar engine, rack and pinion steering, tilt steering wheel, a set of Mickey Thompson tires and Chrome every-

where. We take her to car shows around Arizona, but the most fun are the parades. The kids really seem happy to see us. They yell, “Burn rubber!” and “Spin donuts!” So, I stop and rev her up. It seems to make them very happy. Whenever we go driving around town, it sure makes heads turn and I don’t know if it’s because the car is so awesome or because a lady drives it.

DID YOU KNOW? Marion Lee "Mickey" Thompson was an American off-road racing legend who won many championships. In addition to being a drag racing champion, Mickey Thompson set more speed and endurance records than any other man in automotive history. In 1960, at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Thompson achieved international fame when he became the first American to break the 400 mph barrier, hitting 406.60 mph and surpassing John Cobb's one-way Land speed record of 402 mph.

1941 Chevrolet Coupe - John Vaca I owned a 1941 Chevy Coupe in the mid-60s. I enjoyed driving that car almost every day until one foggy night it lost a battle with a granite light pole. My 1959 Corvette became my daily drive until I entered the military. Upon my return from the service, I parked the Corvette and purchased a 1971 El Camino, but I still wanted to have another 41 Chevy Coupe. I finally purchased my next 1941 Chevy Coupe (40+ years later) in late 2003 from a Vintage Chevrolet restorer in Long Beach, Calif. The owner was reluctant to sell me the car because he knew I was going to build a custom street rod. The car was a partial body shell and frame, a six-cylinder still attached and missing front fenders and hood. The restorer finally agreed to sell me the car. We then towed it to Eddie Martinez’s Custom Upholstery and Body Shop in Paramount, Calif. The build started in early 2004 and stopped in late 2006. Completing my project would not have been possible without the help of my very good friend, Nick Nickels in Lake Havasu City. I gave some thought to buying a finished 41, but after searching I decided to build one. The car sat unfinished for more than two years until Nick convinced me to go forward. He oversaw my project for the entire six months. The car went to Lake Havasu where several skilled craftsmen completed the build. The final assembly and fabrication by Ron Bruins, paint touch-up and detailing by Frank’s Custom Paint & Auto Body, interior by Howard’s Fabricators and the special center windshield stainless trim fabricated from raw stainless steel

The car is a frame-off resto-mode with a viable drive train and suspension. It has a 350/350 engine/trans, Walker radiator, Mustang II front, Ford 9-inch rear, 4-wheel disc brakes, Classic Industries Gages, Ididit tilt column, hidden hi-low beam switch, Briz ribbed polished aluminum bumpers, a single glass truck windshield was modified to fit, Vintageair heat and A/C, power wipers, windows-n-seats, power rack-n-pinion, Flowmaster 40’s, concealed rear

1935 Studebaker Commander Bob & Mimi Halgren

Bob and Mimi Halgren bought their 1935 Studebaker Commander in South Dakota last October and drove it to Payson in one exciting adventure. We went through sub-freezing temperatures, ice and snow all without a heater and the seat stuck in the far-forward position! This car has the President 8-cylinder engine and a 3-speed OD transmission, which makes for good highway driving. It was the first year for Studebaker’s Planar suspension, which they called the “Miracle Ride.” The car is a good driver with mostly original interior and stock color paint.

1955 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery Craig & Ken Bruns

Craig Bruns has always had a love affair with Sedan Deliveries and this is his latest. Craig and Karen’s ‘Great Romance’ almost didn’t happen because the first time he took her for a ride in his 1936 Dodge Sedan Delivery, she, not knowing anything about Hot Rods, made the horrible mistake of stepping on the running board! All was forgiven and I soon learned what this sport was all about. When he found the 55, he called to tell Karen it was perfect: the color was red and the wheels were correct, no changes needed. After some ‘tweaking’ to make things right — the interior had to be changed and who knows what else — it was sent to be “Butchered” — Butch Tucker did an amazing pin striping job that made the car awesome.

RIM COUNTRY PLACES CHAPTER 18: HAPPY JACK, CLINT’S WELL AND LONG VALLEY

Map-makers and map-readers have puzzled for years over the fact that the Happy Jack post office is in Long Valley and the Long Valley Ranger Station is at Happy Jack. As we might expect, “herein lies a tale.” Historically, we need to begin with Long Valley, a narrow valley that is actually only a few miles long. It straddles the Payson-Winslow highway, Arizona 87, beginning about 12 miles north of STAN BROWN the Mogollon Rim. At the north end of this valley is a spot known as Clint’s Well, where the highway splits and Forest Road 3 heads on north to Flagstaff while 87 heads northwest to Winslow. Fifteen more miles toward Flagstaff and the site of the old lumber camp known as Happy Jack is on the left. It was the rancher and merchant Clint Wingfield who gave his name to Clint’s Well. He ran cattle in the area, and with his friend Mack Rogers bought the old Sutler’s Store in Camp Verde in 1898. A year later, on July 2, 1899, Clint and Mack were shot and killed by “Black Jack” Ketchum during a robbery at the store. A posse headed by Clint’s brother Frank went after the killer, tracing him up on the Rim to Long Valley. The trail then led eventually to Payson where Ketchum, under the name of Charlie Bishop, had gone for ammunition and supplies. The pursuit led all the way to the New Mexico border, where Ketchum had left a trail of train robberies. During one of them his arm was shot off by the guard, and he ended up in a New Mexico hospital. There he was apprehended, tried for his crimes in that state, and hung. Arizona never got to try him for the murders in Camp Verde. [1] Jump ahead to the 1940s. The Saginaw and Manistee logging company, that had centered operations near the Grand Canyon and Williams, and maintained a sawmill in Flagstaff, was needing still more logs. The operation moved south in the Coconino Forest to Mormon Lake and beyond. The distance from the mill was too great and in winter the roads impassable, so the company set up a new camp 45 miles southeast of Flagstaff. The logging trucks filled the forest with their roaring all day as they took their cargo to north of Mormon Lake, called the Allan depot, where a remnant of the old Mineral Belt Railroad transported the logs the rest of the way to Flagstaff. The company moved some of its buildings from the old camp at Williams and built additional ones to house the loggers’ families. A busy community emerged at the camp, peaking at 500 souls. The community was at first called Saginaw Camp, and nicknamed Yellow Jacket Camp because of the abundance of ground bees from a nearby spring. That natural water source was a major incentive to locate the camp here. A grade school was provided for the children, a company store, a mess hall, and a community social hall that served as a movie theater on Saturday nights and a church on Sundays. A tiny wood cabin served as the post

office. On weekends the loggers often went down to Long Valley to participate in the rodeos and dances at the Fuller ranch. In the late 1940s the Saginaw & Manistee Lumber company sold out to Southwest Forest Industries. About this same time, the Forest Service moved their Long Valley Ranger Station to a place across the road from the lumber camp. The new supervisor for the Ranger District, named Roland Rotty, said the place needed a more distinctive name than Yellow Jacket Camp. Remembering the legend of a stage coach robber named Happy Jack who operated in Wyoming and Montana, and himself coming from a place called Happy Jack, Montana, he began calling the community “Happy Jack” and the name took hold. The name Yellow Jacket was soon forgotten. Immediately derogative sobriquets began to circulate, such as “Slap Happy,” and because Native Americans were employed by the lumber company, some called it “Hopi Jack.” The Happy Jack lumber camp lasted for 30 years, and in the 1970s Southwest Forest Industries razed the buildings. The Happy Jack post office was moved to Long Valley. The Long Valley Ranger Station remained at the old Happy Jack location. So it came about that the two names are often confused in the public mind: Happy Jack post office is really at Long Valley, and the Long Valley Ranger Station is really at Happy Jack. Memories of the old Happy Jack are hard to come by these days. The old-timers have passed from the scene, but author and journalist James E. Cook lived at Happy Jack as a youth when his father was a summer Forest Ranger there.[2] He recalled how “during long summer afternoons we kids walked down the hill to Yellow Jacket Spring, which fed a muddy stock tank. We built crude rafts to float on the tank, and usually came home caked with mud. In the evenings, after supper, young people from the logging camp and from the ranger station played baseball in a little meadow between the two.” In 1994 a Cottonwood family named Mongini bought property at Long Valley (Clint’s Well), where the post office was called Happy Jack. They named their development Happy Two Too, with an RV park, rental cabins, a restaurant, store and other camping amenities. The old site of the Happy Jack lumber operation has taken on a new and historic significance in this 21st century. The Lowell Observatory and the Discovery Communications (Discovery TV channel) have become partners, along with other universities, in building there a $53 million telescope, designed “to answer fundamental questions about our universe.” The claim is that it is “among the most technically sophisticated ground-based telescopes of its size” and is the fifth largest in the United States. It sits on a cinder cone at an almost 7,000-foot elevation, seven stories high. Arizona maps still show the original location for Happy Jack, and the Happy Jack post office still remains in Long Valley, at Clint’s Well. A drive along Highway 87 and Forest Road 3 always provides serendipities. One time as we were in the vicinity of Happy Jack, nine doe crossed the road leisurely in front of us, herded by a proud buck. A little further on four elk

crossed, three of them apparently young stags hoping to grow some antlers. Upon our return we stopped at Clint’s Well for a great hamburger and coffee, and recalled the history of these special places on the road to Flagstaff. NOTES

DEAD MAN DOWN

A really good film nobody’s watching Fairly often I think a film lacks ... lets’ say anything very interesting, but the public dumps its hard earned money at the ticket window by the bucket. “Dead Man Down” is the exact opposite. I think that this is a superior crime/mystery/thriller and the public stayed away from the theater in multitudes. The poor producers made and paid for a very well acted, written and directed movie. They spent $30 million on the film but have made back only $11 at the box office. Neither life

ly believable as a revenge-driven man with a hollowed out soul. He meets an accident victim, Noomi Rapace, who wants him to exact vengeance for her on the drunk driver who maimed her. Rapace worked with Oplev in “Dragon Tattoo” and this collaboration is almost as good. We have a gradually reveled mystery —what is the motivation of the protagonist — wrapped in a tense thriller. We know that the vengeance seeker can be found out by the gang leader at any time and we know that he will die if found out. Terrence Howard is the gang leader, a striver with no qualms about criminality and murder. He has a great four minutes where he demonstrates that just being willing to kill isn’t enough. A success-

ful gangster must also have absolute control over his own emotions — including fear. “Dead Man Down” is a strong three-and-a-half saw blade thriller with great characters and plenty to learn about the important things in life. It is R rated for brutality and language. There are a couple of well choreographed gun fights including one that takes place by error among more than a dozen guys in a closed room. I liked this two-hour movie a lot, but the public didn’t. There are lots of good looking films coming soon including “Man of Steel,” a new “Star Trek,” a new “Iron Man” and Johnny Depp as Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s Indian companion.
