TRAVEL TALK | KEN BROOKS

RESORT VACATIONS We like to vacation in different ways. Some will enjoy a camping outing in the beautiful woods. Others prefer staying in a big city attending live theatre, concerts, museums and fine dining. Some of us will book a cabin on a cruise ship to relax and still see the world while a few will reserve a spot on a tour to exotic lands. In this edition, I thought it would be interesting to consider relaxing in a fine spa with all the trappings of swimming, massages, fine dining and activities to keep us interested. Fairly close by is the one and only Lake Tahoe located in northern California. It is an easy drive from Reno or even the Bay area. The terrain is mountains, a beautiful lake and plenty of pine trees. The resort I am recommendKEN BROOKS ing is The Landing, Lake Tahoe Resort & Spa. It is located on the south shore and is rated 5stars. This just might be the perfect getaway whether you visit in spring, summer, winter or fall. There is much to do here regardless of season. Recreation at Lake Tahoe is boundless with its rugged terrain. In summer you have lake sports, hiking, biking, swimming and plenty of sightseeing. Water sports, such as boating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and paddle boarding, are all possible. Stream and lake fishing, fly fishing to chartered lake fishing, the trout of Tahoe will provide anglers a catch worthy of showing off to your friends back home. Fishing season on the Truckee River is April 28 through Nov. 15. Lakes are open all year round, including Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Boca Reservoir, Stampede and Prosser Reservoir. Some quick facts about the area: Surface area is 193 square miles, maximum depth of the lake is 1,645 feet, and it has 71 miles of shoreline. The length of the lake is 22 miles with a width of 12 miles. You can drive all the way around the lake on good roads. Golfing is available next to the resort at

Edgewood Golf Course and rated by Golf Digest Magazine as one of America’s Top Golf Courses. Five additional golf courses are within an hour of the hotel. Horseback riding is available and you will love the backcountry pack trips. Couples will enjoy the steak dinner rides plus riding to breakfast and lunch if you choose. You can also enjoy paddlewheel and catamaran Lake Cruises. There is also an elegant dinner cruise on the M.S. Dixie or the Tahoe Queen out of Zephyr Cove. You can even dance on the boat. In the winter there is skiing and snowboarding in the majestic Sierra Mountains with 12 ski resorts around the lake and jaw-dropping cliffs. You can even cross-country ski in the meadows with a customized tour. Snowmobiling tours are available for the more adventurous. The bottom line of a resort vacation is having fun while enjoying the great outdoors, relaxing, fine dining and a beautiful place to stay with good and friendly service. The Landing is at 4104 Lakeshore Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150, (855) 7005263. Norma and I plan to stay here again this summer. A few days ago we flew to Minneapolis, rented a car and drove 185 miles to the North Shore of Lake Superior to attend a wedding of a relative. As we continued north on the highway the woods became more abundant and the snow was deeper. We arrived three hours later in Duluth, situated on the lake with some 86,000 residents. We then headed northwest along the shores of Lake Superior for 20 more miles to Two Harbors, Minn. The lake was completely frozen over with snow piled upon the ice. I did spot a few fishermen with their lines in a hole in the ice. I hope they caught something. Near Two Harbors was our destination, the Larsmont Cottages on the Lake. Nestled between tall pine and birch trees along the shore of Lake Superior is this dream of a resort. It consists of a main building which houses the check-in desk, function rooms, comfortable lobby, heated swimming pool, spa and a large Swedish

dining room. The menu in the dining room is different and offers Swedish dishes as well as typical American cuisine. It also features an open kitchen so you can watch the cooks prepare the meals. The accommodations are traditional Scandinavian-design cottages to resemble a Nordic fishing village. The resort was constructed during 2007 and 2008 and it is very modern and up-to-date. Our cabin was about 2,000 square feet in size and housed a great room consisting of living area, dining area and ultra modern kitchen. It was fully furnished with top of the line furnishings and included a fireplace, large flatscreen TV, all kitchen equipment, dishwasher etc. There were two bathrooms and three bedrooms also with TV’s. We even had our own garage, plus a fully furnished sunroom. The heating was radiant and very good. During our three days here we enjoyed great dining and the enclosed heated pool. The wedding took place in one of the function rooms with some 45 people present. During the summer at Larsmont Cottages, you are surrounded with opportunities to hike, bike, paddle and shop. The fishing here is very good, just drop a line in

and keep your fingers crossed. The spa offers an authentic Finnish Sauna set in a cottage on the lake water’s edge for your indulgence. You can relax in a natural, pristine setting overlooking beautiful Lake Superior. It is the largest of the Great Lakes and can be as deep as 1,300 feet in some locations. In the summer there is a nightly bonfire and free s’mores. Some of the activities available include: birding, kayaking, golfing, mountain biking, nearby state parks, the town of Two Harbors as well as Duluth. In the fall the colors will bend your mind as the trees turn toward winter. I spotted two young deer as we were driving along the lake. The Larsmont Cottages at Two Harbors, Minn. can be reached at www.larsmont cottages.com and by phone by dialing 1866-687-5634. There are other nice vacation cottages and spas along the lake, but this one I have experience personally and it is a winner. You might think that Minnesota is a long distance from home, but it is only a threehour plane ride to nice people and friendly surrounding. Have fun planning your next trip.

es for his patent were W. H. Hilligass, Bert Belluzzi, Peter Haught, and Sammy Haught, all of Payson. Henry eventually married Julia Ann Langford Jones. While Henry himself never had any children, Julia had three from a prior marriage. “Rim Country History” has an interesting story about Julia and her garden. “One summer at the Haught sawmill (where Tonto Village is now), there was an overabundance of cabbage in the gardens. Julia Haught (Henry’s wife) decided to make sauerkraut. When a visitor came by to see her, the visitor was “overwhelmed by the peculiar odor.” When the visitor graciously inquired about the cabbage work, Julia opened the cupboard and proudly pointed to the top shelf, which contained her sauerkraut in cardboard Quaker Oats boxes.” Henry had a sawmill in Tonto

Village, which he got from Sampson Elam Boles and eventually sold to Howard Standage of Mesa. Standage had Mesa Lumber Company and the Standages are amongst the oldest families in Mesa. By the mid 1950s, Henry sold his land to the Standages, who developed Tonto Village. Gila County plat 188 was recorded on Dec. 17, 1957 for unit one, and Gila County plat 245 was recorded on May 27, 1960 for unit two. These two units are made up of smaller lots, though many initial buyers had multiple lots, selling some off later. Nedra Fitch served as a salesperson there for Tonto Village and there are still many Fitches in the area. The Hitchin’ Post store was established by Carmi and Hazel Thompson. They were the first ones to buy in the newly established subdivision. They lived in the back and had their store in

front. They later sold to Dick and Pat Watson. Unit three of Tonto Village, the west part, was developed in 1979, with Gila County plat 565 and 565A being recorded on June 28, 1979. This part of Tonto Village contains some larger lots, many of which have yet to be built on. A new Hellsgate fire station is being built on the eastern edge of this part of Tonto Village. For many years, Tonto Village had a lumber yard, operated by John and Alba Veley. Many places in the area were built using their lumber. Since it was developed into a subdivision, Tonto Village has been a stopping point for many campers and second home owners who travel Control Road. Places like the Hitchin’ Post (past) and the Double D (current) hold a special place in the hearts of many. It is truly a unique and special community.

Fish breakfast and high in the sky This past month, we celebrated Resurrection Sunday also known as Easter. For Christians, this holy holiday commemorates and solidifies the promise God made for his creation in the book of Genesis This glorious story does not end there. After the resurrection of Jesus, He lingered here on earth before He ascended to the Father. Why? He already declared that, “It is finished” willfully giving up His life on the cross. SIMONE LAKE Many months prior he openly responded to the accusing religious leaders, saying, “If they destroy this temple (meaning His body) He would raise it up again.” And to Jesus’ dear faithful disciples He gently yet factually shares with them that He will be leaving, yet comforting them by reassuring that they will never be alone because He will send the Holy Spirit to come, guide and lead us. “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” So with of this detailed instruction and instructive readiness, why did Jesus linger? From a human perspective, my eyes, my thoughts would be “Wouldn’t Jesus be in a rush to get home? Wouldn’t He have longed to see His father face to face and cling to Him once again? Wouldn’t He have grown so tired

and weary of the burden of the wicked and perverse world? So much so, that he could not wait to rush back to a holy, sinless surrounding in His holy ordained role, basking in the precious of angels reaffirming His shear true pure Excellency, (something denied Him on earth) crying out ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’.” The answer to all of my human questions is no… He wasn’t. He wasn’t in a rush to get home, because His heart was on His people. What was on the mind of Jesus? It was not himself, but in true holy example of perfection, His mind was on others. His mind was on the commissioning of Mary, the comfort of His disciples, the restoration of Peter, and the deeper growth of understand to common people prior to His ascension where he sits on the right hand side of God. Mary, in the middle of anguishing grief and sorrow, was in an emotional state of despair at the death of her Savior. She comes to the tomb only to find that the body of the Lord was no longer there, thus increasing her disaster of anguishing pain to a whole new level. Jesus not only lingered outside, but dialogues with Mary who assumed he was the gardener… pleads with Him saying, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid him and I will take Him away.” Then Jesus calls her by her Arabic name, associating with her true identity… He says “Mary” she recognizes His voice and responding with the title of Rabboni, which means teacher. “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your

Father, and My God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.[1]

to him this call and commission of feeding the sheep and lambs, which translates into following Jesus by following his holy call of bringing salvation to the lost.

The disciples, likewise were exposed to the presence of Jesus before his ascension. Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and while Peter with some other disciples went fishing, Jesus was waiting for their return on the shore. After a disappointing morning of not catching even one fish, Jesus encourages them to put the fish net down on the other side of the boat. Only then were the nets overflowing with a tremendous about of fish yet the nets did not break. Watching this scene from the shore, and the disciples hauling and dragging the nets of fish to the beach… they looked up and “saw a fire of coals, with fish laid on it, and bread.” After a tiring, sweaty, heavy task of hauling the fish to the shore, Jesus made them a fish breakfast and He says, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”[2] “Come and eat breakfast.” 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.[3] So Jesus in a full-fledged new creation form was standing before their eyes in a 3-D bodily form of resurrection, (a physical state once to be attained to all that believe in Him.) Concerned about their physical needs of food and concerned about their emotional needs of grief and sorrow over their Lord no longer walking with them, this is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.[4] Jesus then dialogues with Peter reassuring

The Lord commissions the disciples encouraging them to be pro active in their calling. He said to them, “But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ “And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.” The last view the disciples had of Jesus was him high in the sky being lifted up to sit next to God on the throne. Questions

Will you? Acknowledge Jesus came, died, was resurrected and lingered here on earth before His ascension before He toke His holy seat sitting next to the Father in heaven. Will you believe so that you one day will be resurrected like Jesus? ©Copyright 2012 Simone Lake. All Rights Reserved. ©Copyright 2012 Deep Roots in Christ Ministries. All Rights Reserved

Birds, snakes, fishing and fun Annual Wildlife Fair, Monster Mudder 5k are coming events The jewel of Payson — Green Valley Park — will undergo a transformation when its grassy expanses turn into a carnival full of wildlife and hands-on outdoor activities for all. A fantastic day of fun is planned for residents and visitors alike at the Annual Payson Wildlife Fair. The festivities are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 10 at the park. penter grips with their own union and work rules. We cannot have a movie without Grips. The Grips work with the electricians but only the electricians can actually touch the lights. The Grips build the stands that the lights rest upon, but only the electricians can install or work the lights themselves. The electricians work under an official called a Gaffer. In the division of labor imposed upon the industry by the unions, a worker who turns on a light is an electrician but a worker who puts up a shade to make the light softer will be a Grip. Legend has it that in the old days of hand-cranked cameras, the turning of the mechanism would cause the camera to jiggle. That sounds reasonable to me. The camera operator would grab a couple of big guys and have them take hold of the camera tripod to keep it steady. These guys who helped with the camera in this way had to have a good grip. Just as there is a Best Boy Grip, so there is a Best Boy Gaffer. Sometimes you might see one of my favorite oddball movie terms, the title of Python Wrangler. The Python Wrangler works for the sound department. He works as a utility guy doing whatever needs to be done for the sound people. A particular duty of his is to move heavy cables around, to keep them out of the shots and so on. Hence we have the term Python Wrangler. It takes a lot of people to make a movie, even a bad one. We will return to this behind the scenes talk from time to time. Pick a movie this week and give it a look. Movie making is the only art form that is the exclusive province of modern life, think of that. Enjoy, going to the flickers is fun even when the story makes us cry.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Untangling personal problems might take more time than the impatient Lamb expected. But it’s important to hang in there until all those knotty situations are straightened out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You still need to work out last-minute snags in your dealings with a rival. Hold your ground despite a perceived lack of support. Things should turn around before you know it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Best not to delay preparing for that upcoming family event. The sooner you get things started, the better chance you have of finding potential problems and making needed changes. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The romantic Moon Child might be reluctant to see the reality behind that “ideal” situation. But by midweek, the practical Crab emerges to help clear away the moonbeams. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) Although the Big Cat might be receptive to more “purr-suasion” to get you to agree to a workplace change, make sure you can distinguish the fine line between facts and flattery. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Your positive attitude in the workplace helps to get you noticed by the right people. Now go ahead and use some of that new selfconfidence to help shore up a personal relationship. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Although you might still have to work out some problems with a business partner, things go more smoothly on the home front. An investment opportunity might need more study. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Don’t be reluctant to act on your suspicion. Even if others see nothing wrong, the astute Scorpio could sense an underlying problem that isn’t always obvious on the surface. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) A new opportunity presents some obstacles that need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Delaying action in hopes that the problems will go away could be counterproductive. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) A friend or family member’s request might carry some hidden factors that could later create problems. Be sure you know all the facts before you make your decision. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A setback in implementing a plan could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Use the downtime to rework your original concepts and see where changes could be made. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) You might not be consciously fishing for compliments, but admit it — won’t you feel great when your efforts are noticed? So accept the praise gracefully. You earned it. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of beauty in your personal life extends to your efforts to protect and preserve the natural world around you. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
