2012 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
Andy Towle photo
Archers of all ages and skill levels are among the first folks invited into the arena as part of the 2012 Mountain High Games. Everyone registered to be in the archery contest gets to practice their shooting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, June 1. The 3D Archery Tournament is slated for 11 a.m., Saturday, June 2.
CELEBRATE THE GREAT OUTDOORS Payson’s third annual Arizona Mountain High Games is a celebration of the great outdoors in the Rim Country. It is also part of the state’s official ongoing festivities marking the 100th anniversary of Arizona Statehood. The event has been sanctioned by the Arizona Office of Tourism as an official Arizona Centennial Event and is being promoted statewide. The Town of Payson, Rim Country Powersports and Digitell Verizon Wireless are sponsoring the three-day festival Friday, June 1, Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. Based at the Payson Event Center the activities will cover lots of ground with the ATV Trail Rides, a 5K Trail Run and Mountain Bike Races. The events in this year’s competition also include: a Dutch Oven Cooking Contest, 3D Archery Competition, ATV Rodeo, Sawdust Games, Pinecone Throwing Championships, Old-Fashioned Horseshoe Tournament and a trucks only Demolition Derby. An estimated 500 professional and amateur athletes will compete for more than $10,000 dollars in cash and prizes — last year almost 400 participated. This year there is $7,000 in cash up for grabs. ATV EVENTS
Participants in the ATV rides, sponsored by Rim Country Powersports, will experience some of Rim Country’s most seldom seen backcountry. They will also enjoy a barbecue dinner Friday; lunch on Saturday; poker run and trail riding entertainment — like singing cowboys and old stories about miners, cowboys and outlaws. Three rides are planned: the Snow Storm Mountain Ride is Friday evening, the Hellsgate Ride and Poker
Run is Saturday; and the Royal Flush Mountain Ride is Sunday morning. The ATV Rodeo, sponsored by the Payson Pro Rodeo Committee, will start at 7 p.m., Friday, June 1. Participants are encouraged to pre-register online or attend the onsite registration meeting from noon to 5 p.m., Friday, June 1. Participants will compete in events like the Cowhide Race, Grocery Race, Barrels and Poles, and Obstacle Course. This rodeo is open to the general public and kids, ages 8-12, can compete on a 150 cc quad (and are allowed to participate in the Barrels, Poles, and Hide Race as a rider). Those 13 to 15 can compete on a 250 cc quad. In the open class, for adults age 16 or older, participants may use a side-by-side, sport bike or utility quad. There is $1,000 in cash up for grabs in this event. TRAIL RUN
The 2012 Mountain High Games Trail Run is a plus or minus 5K run on a newly developed, partially primitive trail. It is an undulating course — all dirt, no asphalt. This format lends itself to excellent opportunity for spectators since more than two-thirds of the course can generally be viewed at any time. Check in for the trail run is at 6 a.m., Saturday, June 2 and the race will start at 7 a.m. — preregistration is available from noon to 5 p.m., Friday, June 1. The fee to participate is $25 and $250 cash is up for grabs in the event. MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENTS
Mountain bike racers of all ages also have an opportunity to enjoy the Rim Country’s great outdoors at the
Mountain High Games. There are two events Saturday, June 2, one for beginners and women and another for advanced riders. The course will be plus or minus 5K over a primitive terrain track. Check-in starts at 6 a.m. and the race will start at 9 a.m. The first race will be for beginners and the female division, with women starting a minute after beginners. Beginners will have 20 minutes plus 1 lap. The second race will be for advanced riders, 30 minutes plus 1 lap. The entry fee is $25. Sponsor Coca-Cola will be awarding several fantastic prizes to the first place winner of the men’s and women’s divisions and $250 cash is up for grabs. ARCHERY
The 3D Archery Tournament starts at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 2. The range is open for practice from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, June 1. Everyone is invited to participate — 4-H clubs, amateurs and professionals. Entry fees are $30 family; $20 adult; $15 youth/cub; $10 4-H participant (or included in the family fee) — peewees are free. DUTCH OVEN COOKING
Saturday afternoon will feature a Dutch Oven Cooking Contest. Sponsored by the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and produced by The International Dutch Oven Society of Arizona the event starts at 1 p.m. Contestants will prepare a main dish, bread and a dessert. Visitors may sample all of these mouth-watering dishes. Winner of the 3-Pot Contest will be eligible to enter in The World Championship CookCONTINUED ON PAGE 7

Three ATV trail rides are part of the 2012 Mountain High Games, one slated each day and each of varying lengths. There will be a 16-mile ride Friday night, a 32-mile ride and poker run on Saturday and a 22-mile trek on Sunday. Both the Saturday and Sunday rides are of intermediate difficulty; the Friday ride is ranked for beginners.
ATV TRAIL RIDES LEAD GAMES EVENTS The first activity for the 2012 Mountain High Games is the Friday night ATV Snowstorm Mountain Trail Ride. The ride will leave from the Payson Event Center at 5:45 p.m., after a barbecue dinner just for trail ride participants, and cover a 16-mile round trip route. It will conclude back at the Event Center at about 7:45 p.m. Only 50 will be allowed to register for the trail rides, but it is not necessary to register for all three rides. The cost for the full event is $60 for riders and $30 for non-riders. The cost of a single ride is $25. The Snowstorm Mountain Trail Ride will include a stop and entertainment by Jinx Pyle, who is Payson’s official historian, along with his wife, Jayne Peace. He will talk about some of the area’s history and share a few ballads. There will be views of the Mazatzal Mountains, an overlook of the East Verde River, mine sites and more. For the most part, the trail ranks at a “beginner” level. The longest ATV trail ride takes place Saturday and includes a Poker Run (riders draw a card at various stops and the one with the best hand at the end will win a large television from Walmart). Called the Hellsgate ATV Ride, the route is 32 miles and will require trailering to the
trailhead. This is a new trail for the games with an elevation ranging from 3,000 feet to 6,440 feet at the summit of Horse Mountain. Riders will see both Tonto and Haigler creeks, archaeological sites and possibly catch sight of some of the wildlife found in the area — black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, gray foxes and javelina. The trail will take riders through one of the most rugged, mountainous, wilderness areas in the West and it is rated at an “intermediate” level. It will start at 8 a.m. The final activity of the Mountain High Games is a Sunday ATV trail ride, starting at 7 a.m. Called the Royal Flush Mountain Ride, this is a 22-mile round trip and rated “intermediate” in difficulty. Participants will trailer to the trailhead, which is about three miles from the Payson Event Center. This trail is full of rich history and is where one of the bloodiest grazing wars ever happened between sheepherders and cattle ranchers. It also covers some of the most rugged and beautiful territory in the area. In addition to enjoying the beauty and challenge offered by the ride, participants will also get to hear about its history.

2012 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT GAMES FROM PAGE 3
Off for 2012 in Utah. There is a $15 registration fee and the minimum age for participants is 12. Teams can enter, but there can be no more than three people on a team. Money will be awarded to first through third places: first place will receive $250, second place $150, and third place $100. SAWDUST GAMES
New this year is a fun competition called the Pinecone Throwing Championships, which will be part of the Sawdust Games, sponsored by The Home Depot, starting at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 2. The cost is $2 to enter the Pinecone Throwing Championships. Participants will be given 15 pinecones and they must pitch them into a 5-gallon bucket from 20 to 35 feet away in a minute. The 20 contestants with the top overall score — based on the number of pitched pinecones landing in the bucket — will move onto the championship round. In the championship round participants will get an additional 15 cones to throw. There will be prizes for first, second and third places. Other Sawdust Games events • Sawdust Pit Grab in which the youthful participants will rummage through a giant pile of sawdust for awesome prizes from Home Depot and other sponsors. • Kids Log Stacking Race is all about speed. • Kids Nail Drive — Fastest kid to drive home
three nails wins a prize. • Women’s Rolling Pin Throw, which is a distance event. • Cigar Smoking Fire Fighting Competition — Participants will put on a Forest Service water pack, light up a cigar and the last one with a smokin’ cigar wins! The winner takes home $50 cash. After 3 p.m., Saturday, there is a $10 admission, which is also entry into the main event of the day, the Trucks Only Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. DEMOLITION DERBY
Brand new this year and the main event of the three-day fun fest is a Trucks Only Demolition Derby, sponsored by Anderson Collision Center. All the noise, smoke and dirt will start flying at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 2. Gates open at 3 p.m. and there is a $10 admission. The prize pot includes $2,000 added money on top of the collective registration fees. The champion will get a trophy in addition to the cash; the most aggressive driver in each heat will get a prize from the sponsors; and the top local driver will also get a trophy. Families and individuals are encouraged to enter any and all of the events at the Mountain High Games. It isn’t necessary to be a pro to have fun. For more information visit www.paysonrim country.com/mountainhighgames or call the Town of Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department at (928) 474-5242, ext. 7.

The ATV Rodeo is open to riders ages 8 and up, though the power of the ATVs used by the younger contestants is restricted. Those 8 to 12 may use only 150 cc or under vehicles and can only compete in the barrels, poles and, as a rider, the hide race events. Those 13 to 15 may only use 250 cc (or under) vehicles, however, all of the contests are open to them. In addition to the barrels, poles and hide race open to the youngest riders, there will be an obstacle course and grocery race competition. Contestants must be registered by 5 p.m. and check-in at 6 p.m. and attend a mandatory safety meeting at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person per event. ABOUT THE CONTESTS
Pole bending: Riders will weave through poles arranged in a straight line without tipping one over and then race back to the finish line; winning is based on speed and accuracy, 5 seconds will be deducted from the finishing time for each pole knocked down and if a pole is missed the rider will be disqualified. Barrel racing: Riders will navigate a pattern around three barrels to the finish line without tipping over a barrel. Winning will be based on speed and accuracy, with 5 seconds deducted from the finishing time for each barrel knocked over. Those breaking the pattern will be disqualified. Hide race: Vehicles in this race must have a ball hitch or bumper handle. This event involves two participants, the ATV driver and a rider on a cowhide. The driver will race to the far end of the arena
pulling their rider on the cowhide and make a wide turn around a barrel. The rider, in full protective gear, must remain on the hide for the entire ride. If they fall off, the team is disqualified. Obstacle course: Contestants will navigate through various obstacles in the fastest time. Grocery race: This competition consists of one quad and a team of two riders who must race over an obstacle course from one end of the arena to the other, come to full stop and both riders dismount, then pick up an egg, watermelon and large water balloon, return to the quad and race back through the obstacle course to the other end. A second will be deducted from finishing times for each item broken. DEMOLITION DERBY
The Trucks Only Demolition Derby is open to drivers 18 and older and even members of the pit crews must be at least 16. Combining a portion of the entry fee money with an additional $2,000, drivers will win 50 percent of the pot for first; 30 percent for second; and 20 percent for third. There will be trophies awarded and other prizes for such things as top local driver, most aggressive driver in each heat, top female driver and even a beauty pageant for first-time derby trucks. Registration is $60 per team, which includes the driver and two pitmen, there will be a $10 fee for each added pitman on a team. The winner will be the last truck to initiate a hit on another truck that is still in the derby with an unbroken stick. To learn more about the kinds of trucks allowed and other regulations, visit the Web site for the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.
Camping for Mountain High Games The Payson Event Center, home of the 2012 Mountain High Games, has a limited number of primitive camping spaces available on a first come, first served basis. They will only be available on Friday and Saturday nights and must be vacated by 4 p.m., Sunday. There is no water or power hook-ups at the sites. Both RV and tent campsites are offered — the RV sites are 16-feet-by-60feet and can include one RV or one trucktrailer combo, plus one other vehicle; the tent sites are 20-feet-by-20-feet and can have one vehicle on the site (trailers and
RVs are not allowed in the area). The cost is $8 per night for each site and includes trash and portable toilet services. It is strongly recommended there be no pets, but if there are, they must be on a leash at all times. In addition to the limited sites at the Payson Event Center, other area camp sites are the Forest Service’s Houston Mesa, Christopher Creek and Ponderosa Campgrounds (provided fire conditions have not forced their closure) and the Payson Campground and RV Park. Call (928) 474-5242, ext. 7 for details.
