2013 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES

Archers of all ages and skill levels participate in two archery contests at the Mountain High Games. Open Archery Range Shooting is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and a 3-D event starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. Both events, along with all the others at the 2013 Mountain High Games are at, or start at, the Payson Event Center.
TAKE AIM AT A TERRIFIC TIME The Fifth Annual Mountain High Games are the Rim Country’s most family-friendly celebration of its great outdoor opportunities. This year the event is a three-day funfest, May 31 through June 2, featuring four highly competitive, yet entertaining contests for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Payson’s Mountain High Games are the Southwest’s largest celebration of adventure sports combined with ATV trail rides and an outdoor expo. “This is the Fifth Annual Mountain High Games,” said Cameron Davis, director of the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, which organizes the festivities. “We have learned many things over the last several years and we believe this will be the most successful event to date. With the pre-registrations we have already received we are expecting contestant numbers to be well over 500 this year.” This year’s sporting events include The Mogollon Monster Mudder (5K mud run), an archery competition, ATV
trail rides, and an old-fashioned horseshoe tournament. The event has been sanctioned by the Arizona Office of Tourism and is an official KMLE 107.9 and KMOG 1420 AM event. The venue for this event is the Payson Event Center, located at the south end of town, directly across the highway from the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. The Tonto Apache Tribe has graciously agreed to allow Mountain High participants and guests to park on a portion of its sovereign land. Due to the expected crowd, parking close to the Payson Event Center will be limited and special areas in the vicinity of the venue have been made available for vehicles (a map designating these areas is in this publication). “Without our awesome co-title sponsors, Rim Country Powersports and Native Air, and the other many corporate and banner sponsors, we could not put on an event like this. We are very grateful for this community and the generosity that our local businesses exhibit to help make these events happen. I can’t say enough about our local
businesses. They are just fantastic people!” Davis said. ABOUT PAYSON

2013 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES

Not many trails in “the wilds” of Rim Country make for easy running — just ask competitors from earlier Mountain High Games — and with the addition of manmade obstacles, including lots of mud and even more mud, don’t expect the new Mogollon Monster Mudder event to make the course any easier.
THE MUDDA OF ALL MUDDERS The Mogollon Monster Mudder is the featured event of the 2013 Mountain High Games. Sponsored by Rim Country Powersports and Native Air the Mogollon Monster Mudder will take place starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 1 at the Payson Event Center. However, it will kick off at 4 p.m., Friday, May 31, as regional law enforcement personnel take on regional firefighters in another mudder event just for them. “It is a way to build camaraderie between the different departments,” explained A.J. Foradory of the Northern Gila County Firefighters Association, who suggested the idea and is helping with obstacle construction for the course. Admission is a can of food for the area food banks. “It is not something that has been done here before (a firefighter vs. cops event), though departments all over the country do it. So, we decided we wanted to do something here. It is something different and it is also a way to give back to the community (with the food drive),” Foradory said. He said spectators and fellow competitors can expect to see some departments represented in the 5K too. A number of firefighters have been talking about being in the race with their families. The Mogollon Monster Mudder course and its obstacles were created in coordination with local and regional fire departments. Foradory said the Houston Mesa, Beaver Valley and Christopher-Kohl’s fire districts have all helped build the obstacles and the Payson Fire De-
partment is providing the water for the mud sites. The mud run is a 5K mountain trail run with natural and man-made obstacles, challenging ups and downs, rocky, wooded and wet terrain, shallow water crossings and, of course, more mud than is natural at this time of year in Rim Country. It is a timed event, with emphasis on fun and teamwork — everyone is encouraged to help each other finish safely. Times will be recorded for individuals, even those who compete with a team. Organizers ask that participants register with their team at the same time. Costumes are encouraged and a special prize will be awarded for the best costume. Organizers are looking for a costume that best resembles the Bigfoot/Mogollon Monster theme. At approximately 11:30 a.m., right after the end of the adult mud run, kids will have a crack at the fun with the Kidz Monster Mud Run for those 8 to 12 years of age. There is no cost for the kids mud run. Once you are done with the race come and hang out in the hospitality area and enjoy a true musical treasure in the Dina Preston Band. There will also be a beer garden, deep-pit barbecue, raffles and vendors. Awards will be presented in the base area later in the day. Registration to participate in the Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K is $65 per person. If not made in advance, contestants can register at the Event Center the day before, from noon to 5 p.m., Friday, May 31, or the day of the competition, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., Saturday, June 1.
Race day registration will be on a first come, first served basis and must be paid in cash. The event will start at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 1. Waves of up to 50 will start at 10 a.m. and go every 15 minutes thereafter. Picking up a participant packet early is not mandatory but definitely recommended. Early packet pickup will be from noon to 5 p.m., Friday, May 31 at the Payson Event Center. Please bring a signed waiver (this can be found and downloaded from www.paysonrimcountry.com/mountainhighgames) and ID to pick up the packet. If you are picking up a friend’s packet you will need a copy of their ID and a signed waiver for them. For registration information, please visit www.paysonrimcountry.com/mountainhighgames or call the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department at (928) 474-5242, extension 7.
MOGOLLON MONSTER MUDDER OBSTACLES The trails for past runs at the Mountain High Games were sometimes naturally treacherous with hills, loose rocks, brush and more. The 2013 Mountain High Games 5K will be treacherous at an entirely different level — even a little malicious in spots. And definitely much muddier — given the name; it is after all, called the Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K. Volunteers from area fire departments have spent CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

But, to be nice, here is the advance notice about what competitors will face: • Tree Weave — Weave in and out of trees • Rock Rumble — This is not the rock pile you remember from childhood • Timber Climb — Climb up and over huge logs • Mogollon Rim Wall — 12-foot high wall made out of pine logs — get help from your buddy; you will need it • Tangled Forest — Weave your way through a maze of trees and ropes • Barbwire Hell — Stay low that is the name of the game here — get dirty and scoot on your belly because what looms above you is pure hell. • Sand Bag Lug — Carry 50 pounds of sand as you traverse one of the muddiest parts of the course • Cargo Slither — Get on your belly and slither like a snake up a muddy hill
• Bigfoot Tracks — This is all about balance as you walk along huge trees • Mystery Obstacle — There have to be a couple surprises • Tunnel of Doom — This is not for the faint of heart — it’s dark in there • Arctic Trench — Ahhh a refreshing ice bath • Belly Creep — Creep through the culvert — we will make sure there are no snakes (if we can) • Gauntlet — Climb up and over — make sure you don’t drown • Mystery Obstacle — Only one hint — be swift • Dirty Gully Claw — Claw your way out of the trench • Mammoth Mudslide — Mud, water and more mud ... • Volcano Mountain — Make sure you do not take too long climbing this obstacle or the soles of your shoes may plumb burn off • Yetti Trail — Climb through large tractor tires ... oh yeah … in the mud • Sasquatch Mountain — Don’t let the beauty deceive you, many a Bigfoot sighting has been seen on this treacherous mountain trail; and watch out for house-sized
boulders, you never know what might be lurking behind them • Forbidden Forest — The forbidden forest will test your stamina; it will test your will to survive … just when you think it is over ... it is just beginning • Point of No Return — At this point all may be lost — but wait, the worst is behind you ... or is it? • Hills of Peril — You have made it through the mental part of the course, but now you will have to overcome the physical fatigue that is setting in ... watch your footing, the second floor is a real doozy • Back Draft Alley — Ever wonder what it would be like to walk using your arms rather than your legs and feet; upper body strength is the key • Coliseum of Terror — Modeled after the Roman Games that took place in the Great Coliseum you will finish the race in front of all who dare to watch • Mystery Obstacle — Watch out for swinging things • Human Tether Ball — Hold on for dear life, it is only a short fall from the top ... but the dizziness CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

Fitness class turns efforts to race training A group of seven members of a fitness class taught by Casandra Stouder have spent the last couple of months gearing up for the Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K. The class is part of Stouder’s work with the Tonto Apache Tribe with whom she is the diabetes program coordinator and fitness trainer. “I wanted to support Cameron Davis’ effort and arranged for him to meet with the tribal leadership,” Stouder said. The meeting led to the use of TAT land for parking for the games and then expanded — members of Stouder’s class decided they would like to train to be in the 5K. Eight weeks ago training started with conditioning and meal planning. Stouder said the group has worked hard and has realized some additional benefits beyond improved health and fitness. “They have been getting to know one another. So, as a team they have more of a mental connection. They have come to rely on one another and encourage each other,” Stouder said. The team has also had an opportunity to go over the course to become familiar with it — though the obstacles weren’t expected to be on site until the week before the event. The group has decided to call itself the Tonto Warriors for the 5K; they will have matching T-shirts and bandannas. Stouder said they are also going to paint their faces. She said the group’s goal is to accomplish the 5K and be able to say they accomplished it.
Camping at the venue There are a limited number of camping spaces available at the Payson Event Center. They will be rented on a first come basis. Pre-registration for a spot was strongly recommended and closed Tuesday, May 28; but there is no harm in asking at day-of registration in the event some spots may still be available or a pre-registered participant may have had to cancel. The cost to camp at the event center is $8 per night and there will be no Sunday night camping allowed, the site must be vacated by 4 p.m., Sunday, June 2. The RV spaces are 16-by-60 to accommodate one RV, truck and trailer combo, plus one other vehicle, space permitting. A tent campsite is 20-by-20, with no trailers or RVs in the area. There is space for single vehicles at the site. There are no water hookups, but trash and portable toilet services are available. There is no alcohol allowed in the camping area, no weapons, no ground fires. All generators must be turned off at 1 a.m. Pets are discouraged; they must be leashed.

2013 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
ATV RIDES ACCESS RIM COUNTRY GLORY What would Mountain High Games be without a chance to get out in the mountains? That is at the heart of the ATV Trail Rides planned at the 2013 games. Participants in the rides will experience some of Rim Country’s most seldom seen backcountry. They will also enjoy a barbecue dinner, a poker run and special entertainment. There are three different rides planned over the course of the May 31June 2 Mountain High Games. SNOWSTORM MOUNTAIN
File photo
The Mountain High Games won’t have an ATV rodeo this year, but it will repeat the very popular trail rides around the Rim Country. Participants will get a close look at this great area and hear some wonderful stories about its history.
UTVs and quads can participate. This ride starts at 5:45 p.m., Friday, May 31. The trail leaves from the Payson Event Center and is 16 miles long. Along the way participants will encounter gorgeous views of the Mazatzal Mountain Range. This ride is meant to be a shorter ride due to the fact that it is an evening ride. Do not underestimate the beauty of this — the trail is surrounded on both sides by gigantic mountain ranges. Halfway through, riders will stop and enjoy a breathtaking sunset, perched on a large rock face overlooking the East Verde
River. During this time participants will also be serenaded by one of Payson’s own, town historian Jinx Pyle. He will share several stories of the region as well as sing some old ballads that will certainly provide a sense of nostalgia. This ride also goes right past one of the old mines, where miners back at the turn of the century drilled a hole through pure rock; whether they found gold or not is still a mystery. Don’t forget to bring a camera and a set of binoculars as well as a flashlight. There are a few rocky portions of this trail with a few steep inclines, but for the most part, this trail is rated “Beginner.” TABLE MOUNTAIN
UTVs and quads can participate. This ride starts at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 1 at the Payson Event Center and is 32 miles long. This will be a fun ride. Get ready to get up close and personal with the Mazatzal Mountain Range. This ride has some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area. 2013 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
ARCHERY EVENTS GROW EVERY YEAR Archers of all ages have an opportunity to test their skills and compete in two different events at the 2013 Mountain High Games at the Payson Event Center. There will be Open Archery Range Shooting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, May 31 and the 4H 3-D Archery Tournament starting at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 1. The Saturday event is designed to encourage families to participate together. Bud’s Plumbing and Chasin’ A Dream Outfitters sponsor the 4-H 3-D Family Archery Tournament. Over the last several years the event has been very well attended. Last year the competition drew more than 100 competitors ranging from peewees to veterans. 4-H clubs, amateurs and professionals are all invited to participate. The entry fees are $30 for a family (immediate family members); $20 adult; $15 youth/cub; $10 4-H participant; and peewees are free. Ken Crump organized the first archery competition at the games, then called the Sawdust Festival, four years ago, and has continued to help bring the event to the festivities. “Archery is near and dear to my heart. My parents were both traditional archers (and very proud of their trophies) and I spent a good part of my childhood standing in front of three stacked hay bales, shooting arrows I’d made myself from a bow I’d modified to suit my left-handed-
File photo
ness,” Crump said. When he retired and moved to Payson he had the opportunity to teach archery to children in the NASP After School Archery Program. He said the children embraced archery and there was always a waiting list for the Payson Parks and Rec NASP sessions. “Four years ago, Payson’s passion for
archery led a group of parents and archery enthusiasts to propose Gila County’s first 4-H Archery Team. A group of four of us volunteered to coach the team. Since its beginning, the Northern Gila County 4-H Deadshots have dominated the Arizona State 4-H Archery Tournaments,” Crump said. The same year the 4-H archery team
was launched, Cameron Davis approached the team’s organizers about putting on an archery tournament for the Sawdust Festival. “I told Cameron that I would head up the archery tournament project for the Sawdust Festival if he allowed me to make it a 4-H Invitational Archery Tournament as well. That was the birth of Payson’s 4H/Family Fun-Shoot Tournament. We’ve held it four years, and it’s grown every year. It’s a lot of work to put on, and all of the hours required to set up the nearly 30 3-D targets, to run the tournament, and to tear it all down each year are volunteered by the Northern Gila County 4-H members, their parents, and the 4-H archery coaches. “It’s a labor of love for all of us. Personally, one of my favorite parts of the tournament is watching the excitement about archery ripple through families. Often, friends, parents and siblings of the nearly 100 participants return the next year with bows and arrows in hand, determined to join in the fun,” Crump said. All archers competing in the archery contest enter the Event Center from McLane Road. You will be directed by one of the course marshals over to your parking area. It is asked that you proceed with extreme caution, as there will be many people that are milling around getting ready for the other events to start.

mountain that is flat and resembles a table top, hence the name of the ride, Table Mountain. This area is full of old mines where prospectors set out to make their fortunes; unfortunately lady luck was often brutal and offered up only misfortune. Full of twisting turns, a hill affectionately named by the locals as the “Rocky Bitch” awaits riders. Enjoy old stories of this area from the guides exploring some of the most rugged landscape in Arizona. To also entertain participants, a poker run is part of this trail ride. At certain points along the way riders will receive playing cards. At the end of the ride they will have the chance to play the hand “dealt.” The best hand will walk away with a brand new television from Walmart, one of the sponsors of the games. This ride is rated “Intermediate.” ROYAL FLUSH MOUNTAIN RIDE – 22 MILES
Participants must trailer to the Royal Trailhead, which is approximately three miles from the Payson Event Center, for this ride. This trail is full of rich history. This area is where one of the bloodiest family feud wars ever happened. You have all heard of the Hatfields and the McCoys. Rim Country had its own notorious feud between the sheepherding Tewksbury family and cattle-raising Grahams. Over about a five-year period there was more blood spilt
between these two families than any other feud in the western United States. Riders will also experience some of the most rugged, yet beautiful territory in this area. It is so rugged it is named the Hellsgate Wilderness. At the end of one of the side trails, riders will have the opportunity to see the large canyon called Hole in the Ground as well as hear several stories as the trail passes by old mining claims that are said to still have “Gold in them thar hills.” This ride is rated “Intermediate” with some rocky areas that would not be suitable for small children or unskilled riders. The 2013 Mountain High Games ATV Trail Rides are sponsored by Rim Country Powersports. Registration is limited to the first 50 riders and use of a helmet is required in all three rides. Register from noon to 5 p.m., at the Payson Event Center Friday, May 31 or from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., Saturday, June 1. The fee to participate in all three rides is $60 and includes the Friday night barbecue and a T-shirt; to participate in a single ride is $25, which includes a T-shirt. The fee for non-rider participants is $30 per person and includes admission to the Friday night barbecue and a commemorative T-shirt. No UTV or ATVs under 250cc will be allowed on the trail. The driver of the UTV or ATV must be 16 years old

Please pay close attention to the length of the ride you are signing up for. Each participant needs a full tank of gas for each ride. Remember to Tread Lightly on these trails. Responsible riding, with respect for the land and the trails, will preserve your right to ride. Please don’t abuse this privilege. To participate in the Mountain High Games trail rides, you will be required to sign a waiver of liability when you pick up your participant packet. Please pay attention to all postings for changes each day. All trails/roads used by the Mountain High Games are understood to be two-way. Even on narrow trails, you may find someone coming on an ATV from the opposite direction. Watch carefully for oncoming traffic on all roads and trails. Please be courteous to other riders. On each trail ride be prepared for possible rain, wind, or cold evening weather. Please pack snacks, food and water as needed on the trail. Trail guides will review the rules with all participants before the ride. If you have any questions regarding the rules please ask the trail guide.
