Mudder a tough test, ATV rides spectacular The 7th Annual Mountain High Games are June 5-7. To kick things off on Friday, June 5 at the Payson Event Center, local Rim Country law enforcement personnel will take on local firefighters for bragging rights on the Mogollon Monster Mudder Course. Come and enjoy a fun evening of cheering on hometown heroes and bring a can of food for local food banks. Last year the fire teams won, but there are rumors in the air that this did not sit well with some police personnel. After the Police vs. Fire Mud Run, experienced ATV trail guides will set out on the Snowstorm Mountain Night Ride at 5:30 p.m., Friday, June 5. Those who sign up for this ATV trail ride will experience some of Rim Country’s most pristine country. At the halfway point participants will watch the sun set over the East Verde River and listen to the majestic voice of Payson’s Town Historian Jinx Pyle as he sings some of his favorite ballads and tells stories of days gone by. Don’t miss this folks, it’s a great time. Full participation in all three of the ATV trail rides is $60. Register at the Town of Payson Parks and Recreation Department in Green Valley Park or from noon to 3 p.m., Friday, June 5 or from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., Saturday, June 6 at the Payson Event Center. The second of three ATV trail rides starts at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 6. This adventure ride is called the Table Mountain Ride. It will also showcase some wonderful and breathtaking back country. During the ride, participants will compete in a good
old-fashioned poker run. The prize at the end is worth it! Making a popular comeback to the Mountain High Games this year is the 3rd Annual Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K. The mudder will take place at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 6 starting in the Payson Event Center. Last year the “Mudda of All Mud Runs” lived up to all the hype and proved to be as intimidating as its legendary namesake. This year there are more than 35 manmade and natural obstacles. Described as one of the “hardest races ever created,” expect it to test you in every way imaginable. The Mudder Course consists of a 5K mountain trail run with natural and man-made obstacles, challenging ups and downs, rocky, wooded and wet terrain, shallow water crossings and lots of mud. Complete with obstacles like the Hells Gate Leap, Claustrophobia, Gladiator Corner and the Coliseum of Terror — this course is no joke. There will be a KIDZ Mud Run immediately following the adult mud run on Saturday, June 6. The cost is $5 per participant and the contest is for those ages 6 to 11. Registration for the KIDZ Mud Run will be on the day of the race only. The event comes to a conclusion on June 7 at 8 a.m. with the final ATV trail ride. This ride is called the Royal Flush Mountain Ride. This trail is full of rich history. This area is where one of the bloodiest family feud wars ever happened. You have all heard of the Hatfields and the McCoys. Rim Country had its own notorious feud between the sheep herding Tewksburys

ATV trail rides showcase Rim Country mountain that is flat and resembles a table top, hence the name of the ride, Table Mountain. This area is full of old mines where prospectors set out to make their fortunes; unfortunately lady luck was often brutal and offered up only misfortune. Full of twisting turns, a hill affectionately named by the locals as the “Rocky Bitch” awaits you on this ride. Enjoy old stories of this area from your guides as you explore some of the most rugged landscape in Arizona. To also entertain you we have planned a poker run during this trail ride. At certain points along the way you will receive playing cards. At the end of the ride you will have the chance to play your hand. The best hand will walk away with a brand new television from Walmart, one of the Games’ sponsors. This ride is rated “intermediate.”
The Rim Country boasts some of the best trails for ATV adventures in the state. To take advantage of that fact, Payson’s Mountain High Games feature a series of group trail rides. Only 50 riders will be allowed to participate in each of the three planned rides. The fee for all three is $60 per person and includes a barbecue dinner Friday night, June 5 and a commemorative T-shirt, money saving coupons, admittance to the three rides, one of which is a poker run with a large TV from Walmart as the prize for the winning hand. The fee for non-rider participants is $30 per person and also includes the barbecue and shirt. To participate in just a single ride is $25 and includes the T-shirt. All participants must wear a helmet on all the rides. Riders without a helmet will be removed from the rides and their entry fees will be forfeited.

THE RIDES
Snowstorm Mountain Trail Ride – 16 miles
UTVs and Quads OK! This ride starts at 5:45 p.m., Friday, June 5. The trail leaves from the Payson Event Center and is 16 miles long. Along the way you will encounter gorgeous views of the Mazatzal Mountain Range. This ride is meant to be a shorter ride due to the fact that it is an evening ride. Do not underestimate the beauty of this ride as you will be surrounded on both sides by gigantic mountain ranges. Halfway through the ride you will have the chance to stop and enjoy a breathtaking sunset, while you are perched on a large rock face overlooking the East Verde River. During this time you will be serenaded by one of Payson’s own, Town Historian Jinx Pyle. He will share with you several stories of the region as well as sing to you some old ballads that will certainly leave you feeling a sense of nostalgia. This ride also takes you right past one of the old mines, where miners back at the turn of the century drilled a hole through pure rock; whether they found gold or not is still a mystery. Don’t forget your camera and

a set of binoculars as well as a flashlight. There are a few rocky portions of this trail with a few steep inclines, but for the most part this trail is rated “beginner.” Table Mountain Ride Poker Run – 32 miles
UTVs and Quads OK! This ride starts at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 6. The trail leaves from the Payson Event Center and is 32 miles long. This will be a fun ride for the “Kid at heart!” Get ready to get up close and personal with the Mazatzal Mountain Range. This ride has some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area. One of the defining features of this ride is a large
YOU WILL BE TRAILERING TO THIS TRAILHEAD. This ride starts at 8 a.m., Sunday June 7. Participants will gather at the Payson Event Center and then all travel to the trailhead. The trailhead is approximately 3 miles from the Payson Event Center. This trail is full of rich history. This area is where one of the bloodiest family feud wars ever happened. You have all heard of the Hatfields and the McCoys. Rim Country had its own notorious feud between the sheep herding Tewksburys and cattle raising Grahams. Over about a five-year period there was more blood spilt between these two families than any other feud in the western United States. You will also experience some of the most rugged, yet beautiful territory in this area, so rugged it is named the Hellsgate Wilderness. At the end of one of the side trails you will have the opportunity to see the large canyon called “Hole in the Ground” as well as hear several stories as you pass by old mining claims that are said to still have “Gold in them thar hills.” Get ready for a ride to remember! This ride is rated “intermediate” with some rocky areas that would not be suitable for small children or unskilled riders.

Fun and the thrill of muddy madness The Mogollon Monster Mud Run 5K is all about fun and the thrill of getting totally wet and filthy. It is a timed event, but there is an emphasis on fun, teamwork and helping each other finish safely. Although teams are encouraged, they are not a must. Participants will each be timed independently, but if they are members of a team, all members are encouraged to cross the finish together. Mudders have two hours to finish the 3-plus miles (5K). Historically, most individuals finish in 45 to 90 minutes. To add to the fun, costumes are encouraged and there will even be a special prize for the best Big Foot costume that best resembles the Mogollon Monster. The event starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 6. Waves of up to 50 participants will start every 15 minutes beginning at 9 a.m. The top three places will get a medal and prizes from the event sponsors.

Summer fun slogs into high gear at Mudder BY DJ CRAIG SPECIAL TO THE RIM REVIEW
The mud is about to hit the fan! Well, maybe not the fan — but it will be hitting the 600 or so participants that are expected in this year’s three-mile mudder run, scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at the Payson Event Center. The third annual Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K Mud Run will begin at 9 a.m. sharp for those 12 years and older and promises to be bigger and better than ever. “This year, our mudder is going to have between 35 to 40 challenging obstacles for our runners to run through, climb over and crawl under,” said Kaprice Bachtell, Town of Payson special events coordinator. “Plus, we’ve added a half-dozen new obstacles, including Claustrophobia and Hells Gate Drop, which should challenge even the fittest of individuals,” she added. As of this past Tuesday, there were 440 people signed up to take on the course, and with 25 to 30 registrations coming in each day, last year’s mark of 600 runners should be easily surpassed. The fee for the run is $70 per person. Following the open competition, at about noon to 1 p.m., a special Kidz Mudder will be held for those 6 to 11 years of age. The fee for the youth race is $5 per participant. “People can still sign up for the run, either online until 4 p.m. on June 4 or at the parks office at Green Valley Park. And they can also register from 5:30 a.m.
to 10 a.m. on the day of the mudder,” said Bachtell. “Entrants can participate as individuals or on a team with friends, family or co-workers. A wave of 35 to 40 runners will start the course every 15 minutes and prizes will be given out to the top male and female runners with the fastest times. “We’d like to encourage the community to come out and witness this really unique event that we’re putting on this weekend. And it’s free to the community. So come out and cheer on all the athletes,” said Bachtell. And while the adults are enjoying shopping from all the vendors that will be on hand and relaxing in the beer garden, children can enjoy the “Kid Zone” where there will be a bounce house, face-painting, rock wall, spray-on tattoos and games. An added attraction this year is offered by Rim Country Health, one of the event’s sponsors. It will have a station where participants can have an educational hands-on experience with myofascial release therapy. Myofascial release therapy works the soft tissue for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. The therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles. Sign up for the service during the event’s registration periods either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. The Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K Mud Run should be a muddy good time.

There is no denying the fun participants can expect at the annual Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K at the Payson Event Center starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 6. The folks at Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism invite residents and visitors to come cheer on the contestants.
