Police, firefighters square off in Mudder of their own BY ALEXIS BECHMAN ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
They usually work harmoniously side-by-side, but local firefighters and police officers will square off Friday in a special mud run grudge match at the Payson Event Center before Saturday’s Mogollon Monster Mudder. Last year, the cops took the title during the 5K mud run, but that is debatable depending on whom you ask. Payson firefighter Daniel Malloy and battalion chief Dan Bramble say the scoring system was way off. Bramble enlisted Malloy to win the title back, along with PFD firefighters Jason Tutay, Travis Kilbourne and Michael Moore — some of the fittest guys on the fire force. Malloy says he is ready and has
even altered his workouts to up his running stamina. Last year, during the inaugural police vs. firefighters mud run, organizers put all area firefighters into one team and officers onto another, regardless of which agency they represented. This year, each agency will have its own team of four. So far, Payson Fire will have a team along with Payson Police Department, U.S. Forest Service, Gila County Sheriff’s Office and the Hellsgate Fire Department. “It is a little more fair and competitive this way,” Bramble said. The PFD’s biggest competition: the Forest Service, Bramble and Malloy agreed. Being Hotshots, they are already pretty fit, Malloy said. He shrugged off the cops as competition.
While Malloy has competed in traditional 5Ks before, the mud run last year was his first. His least favorites obstacle on the course is anything that involves water. “I like putting water on stuff, I don’t like being in water,” he said. This year, Malloy is hoping the course is better marked. When they entered the running section, on the south end of the course, it was not well marked and a group of firefighters nearly ended up at the highway. When officers tease them about it, it just adds fuel to their fire. “They think they won last year, but they actually didn’t,” he said. The police vs. fire mud run kicks off at 4 p.m., Friday, May 31. “It is a way to build camaraderie between the different departments,” said A.J. Foradory of
the Northern Gila County Firefighters Association, who suggested the idea and is helping with the construction of the course. Admission is a can of food, which will benefit area food banks. “It is something different and it is also a way to give back to the community (with the food drive),” Foradory said. Some firefighters are even planning to run in Saturday’s 5K too, a number of them running with their families. The Mogollon Monster Mudder course and its obstacles were created in coordination with local and regional fire departments. Houston Mesa, Beaver Valley and Christopher-Kohl’s fire districts helped build the obstacles and the Payson Fire Department is providing the water for the mud.

2014 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
Beware: Mogollon Monster Mudder’s hungry BY ALEXIS BECHMAN ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
Lurking in the woods, the Mogollon Monster is a camper’s worst nightmare. But this time of year, the monster gets hungry for something more. Runners beware: The monster is expected to make an appearance June 7 at the Payson Event Center. Perhaps more terrifying than the monster itself, is the nightmare that lies between the start and finish of one of the muddiest events around. The Town of Payson is once again putting on an outdoor competition, the Arizona Mountain High Games, but things are a little different in now the event’s sixth year. Instead of a host of competitions, organizers this year are focusing instead on just two — the Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K Mud Run and Monster Truck night. After its debut last year, the town quickly realized it had finally struck gold — black, muddy gold that is. So gone are the archery and horseshoe toss competitions found in games past. In its place is the the Mudder, a 5K mountain trail run with natural and manmade obstacles, challenging ups and downs, rocky, wooded and wet terrain, shallow water crossings and, of course, more mud than is natural at this time of year in Rim Country. The trails for past runs at the Mountain High Games were sometimes naturally treacherous with hills, loose rocks, brush and more. The 2014 Mountain High Games will be treacherous at an entirely different level — even a little malicious in spots. And definitely much muddier — given the name; it is after all, called the Mogollon Monster Mudder 5K, said Cameron Davis, director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. The race features more than two dozen menacing obstacles, including a Tunnel of Doom, Arctic Trench, Coliseum of Terror and Hills of Peril, organizers say. Competitors will walk through pits of muddy quicksand sure to steal their shoes, crawl under tires and rows of barbed wire, face a rocky hike through the forest, carry firefighting hoses up and down bleachers, swim through icy pools and huff themselves up and over log walls — all the while spectators watch on in delight. And this year, workers have added several new challenges and unexpected surprises to keep runners terrified of what could come next. It is a timed event, but with an emphasis on fun and teamwork — everyone is encouraged to help each other finish safely. Judges will record times individually, combining those with a runner’s team times, if applicable. Runners have two hours to finish with most finishing last year in 45 to 90 minutes. That means a competitor could go less than 2 miles per hour and still complete the course. For reference, a brisk walk is usually about 3.5 mph. Costumes are encouraged and a special prize will be awarded for the best costume. Organizers are looking for costumes that best resemble the Bigfoot/Mogollon Monster theme. The Payson Arizona Mountain High Games are the Southwest’s largest celebration of adventure sports combined with an outdoor expo, Davis said.
Professional and amateur athletes from all over the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest will converge upon Payson to compete for cash and prizes. Besides the Mogollon Monster Mudder (5K Mud Run), there will also be an officers vs. firefighters mud run Friday night, June 6 and the Monster Truck, Night of Fire & Thrills Spectacular Saturday night, June 7. The venue for this event will take place at the Payson Event Center, located at the south end of town directly across the street from the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. If you are looking to participate in one of the three events, go to www.paysonrimcountry.com. At approximately 11:30 a.m., right after the end of the adult mud run, kids will have a crack at the fun with the Kidz Monster Mud Run for those 8 to 12 years of age. Once you are done with the race, visit the hospitality area and enjoy the Dina Preston Band. There will also be a beer garden, food, raffles and vendors. What to wear: Clothes that you don’t mind gettin’ dirty. Leave your jewelry, watches, and other valuables at home. Bring running shoes and clothes to change into afterward. It might be a good idea to bring kneepads or elbow pads. There will be showers available to rinse off after the run. Costumers are highly encouraged with an award for the best costume that resembles the Mogollon Monster.

Live music to soothe the Monster bruises The Dina Preston Band will start rocking the Payson Event Center on June 7 after the Mogollon Monster run. The Dina Preston Band has performed in 40 countries and on more than 20 world tours for our troops and U.S. embassies. It has been called “Five Bands in One” and is known by U.S. embassies, the U.S. State Department and the Pentagon’s Armed Forces Entertainment Department as “Ambassadors of Good-will.” The band has performed in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. It has made appearances in Russia through a corporate cultural exchange program and toured for five weeks in South Korea to entertain U.S. troops and their families. Locally they participated in Super Bowl XXX, performed for the Suns, at Luke Air Force Base and for the state centennial celebration and the Fiesta Bowl. The band has a broad range of songs in its repertoire: country/Americana, classic rock, variety and even jazz for dinner engagements. It also has a number of original works it performs. Also make sure you bring your camera and take a picture with the Mogollon Monster himself. No
shirts will be provided for the kids mud run. Awards will be given to each child upon completion of the course. FOOD & MUSIC This year a DJ will play all the latest tunes. 2014 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
Home Depot helps out BY DAVID KANE HOME DEPOT STORE MANAGER
I can’t believe how the Mogollon Monster Mudder has evolved, especially when I think back to the Sawdust Festival days. Home Depot and its associates have been there since the festival started six years ago, the Payson store committed to giving back to the community. With the success of last year’s Mudder, there is more excitement around this event than ever before. Associates are eager to volunteer their time and many are willing to run in the event. I am fortunate to work with such talented people. Employees at our pro desk and tool rental center have designed and constructed the showers for the muddy runners to clean off after the race. They have also designed and constructed this year’s new monkey bars obstacle. You won’t be able to miss it when entering the main arena. It will be painted Home Depot orange. It has again been a pleasure to work with tourism director Cameron Davis and his team. I know that this year’s run will be another huge success.

Home Depot will not only field a team in the Monster Mudder, but they donated materials and helped build some of the obstacles including the monkey bars shown here.

Monster Trucks this year’s newest thing BY ALEXIS BECHMAN ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
The Mountain High Games will end with a bang this year. The Payson Event Center will go from hosting muddy runners to muddy trucks with the Monster Truck Night of Fire and Thrills Spectacular. It’s been years since the town hosted a monster truck night and this one promises to be memorable, said Cameron Davis, town tourism director. Monster truck drivers will include Raging Inferno and world champions Bounty Hunter and Iron Outlaw. There will also be a Hollywood stunt show. Ron Woodbridge, COO of Race Track Promotions, said it will be just like what you see on TV, monster trucks doing giant power wheelies, trucks crushing pyramids of cars like ants. Each truck has 1,800 horsepower and weigh in more than 10,000 pounds. Woodbridge said it is sure to be ground pounding and earth shaking excitement. “It is a great night of family fun motor entertainment,” he said. “It promises to be high energy, loud and very entertaining.” For local competitors, there will be truck, quad and motorcycle mud races. Interested competitors need only arrive at the arena’s back gate after 5 p.m. and bring proper safety gear. There is a $30 racer entry fee and rac-
ers can compete in more than one event. A big cash purse will go to the winners, Woodbridge said. Classes will be determined about one hour before show time. The minimum age to compete is 15 for quads and motocross and a parent or guardian must be present. Pre-registration is not required. There will be a free pit party an hour before the monster truck show starts where fans can get up close to the monster trucks, meet the drivers and riders and collect autographs. Afterwards, there will also be an autograph party. For more information, call (480) 7727490. DETAILS

2014 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES
Mudder’s a lot like life ... BY TIM WRIGHT SPECIAL TO THE ROUNDUP
On June 7, my daughter and I will compete in the second annual Mogollon Monster Mudder. This will be my fifth obstacle/mud run and my daughter’s sixth. What compels me to put my halfway to 90-yearold body through another race? Is it the training, the soreness afterwards, the cuts, scrapes and bruises or just the satisfaction of finishing? I am not sure, but as I contemplated it, I got philosophical and realized that races like the Mudder are a metaphor for life. Consider the following: • Both the Mudder and life are all-ages events. • Just as success in life requires preparation and hard work, success in an obstacle race requires the same. • During the Mudder and in life, sometimes we sprint, sometimes we hold a steady pace, and other times we come to a stop to conquer a challenge. • There are many trials/obstacles in life and the Mudder — some are through dark, scary places, some chill us to the bone and some require us to just jump in. • There are times in life we cannot imagine how we will make it through. Discouragement can be paralyzing and some race obstacles do the same and appear insurmountable. • Life and the Mudder are best done with friends. My daughter and I encourage each other; we cheer for each other; we push each other; where I am strong in one area, but need help in another. And ultimately, we conquer together. • Just as finishing a run is satisfying, so too is a life well lived. I hope others will find the courage to register
and run an obstacle run (either the Mogollon Monster Mudder or another). And even if you can’t, go out and cheer the contestants on. If you run or watch, consider life’s lessons and take them to heart. I will take on the Mudder with a vengeance and at the finish, enjoy the triumph of knowing I didn’t hold anything back. But more importantly, I want to live my life in the same way. I want to live to the fullest and finish with a sense that I gave it my all. And I hope that when I finish the race of life, those around me will stand up and say “well done.” Tim Wright is the Town of Payson attorney and is running for Gila County Superior Court judge.
