Rim Country seniors have variety of services BY TERESA MCQUERREY RIM REVIEW EDITOR
Welcome to The Senior Review. Each year the staff of the Payson Roundup, with help from our advertisers, brings senior residents of Rim Country a guide to available services and information to enhance their daily lives. This edition of The Senior Review includes articles about money matters, including a comprehensive contribution from Tom Russell about covering the costs of health care as we age. Debra Hansen, the new director of The Center (formerly the Payson Senior Center) shares information about all the services provided by the facility. While The Center primarily serves seniors in Payson and Star Valley, the Pine and
Strawberry area’s older residents benefit from the Senior Citizens Affairs Foundation, which operates the PineStrawberry Community Dining Hall. The group serves meals for $3 at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday for members; non-members can eat a full meal for $6 or enjoy just the salad bar for $3. The meals are for those 50 and older. The Community Dining Hall also operates the PS Meals on Wheels program. The cost to participate is $4 for members. It also provides a place for members to socialize. For details, call (928) 476-2151. There are stories about how exercise benefits seniors and the perplexing problem of the loss of taste and smell, that seniors sometimes experience. Thanks for bringing us into your home. Enjoy.
A variety of home remedies for joint pain can provide relief

Movement helps with joint pain seniors may experience due to arthritis.
Stiff, painful joints affect a vast number of people. The number of people living with arthritis is expected to increase as Baby Boomers age. Treatments for joint pain and stiffness range from medication to physical therapy. Finding the right regimen may take some effort, including some trial and error. For those looking for treatments they can try at home, consider these homespun remedies. (Note: Check with a physician to confirm the safety of alternative treatments before adding herbs to or modifying your existing medications.) • Exercise more — Regular movement helps to maintain flexibility in the body’s joints. Those with joint pain may shy away from exercise, but they could be doing themselves a disservice. Lowimpact exercises, like swimming and water aerobics, can
work out muscles and joints without adding extra stress. Walking can replace jogging or running, and yoga and Pilates may be just the thing for deep stretching. • Lose weight — Joint pain is often tied to obesity. Losing just a few pounds can ease up strain on certain joints, such as the hips, feet and knees. • Consider hot and cold therapies — Using a heating pad, hot shower or bath or an ice pack can work wonders on arthritis-related pains. Do not apply hot and cold packs to the skin directly, as this can injure the skin. Wrap them in a towel first. • Include anti-inflammatory foods and beverages in your diet — Ginger, turmeric, flaxseed, grape juice and bromelain can alleviate inflammation and stiffness. Foods such as fatty fish and nuts high in omega-3 fatty
acids also will help fight inflammation. Blueberries, garlic, celery and kelp should be included in diets as well. • Go for a massage — Regular massages can help reduce pain and stiffness and improve range of motion. The massage therapist should have experience working on people with arthritis. In addition, massages should be performed by licensed physical therapists and guided by a doctor’s recommendation. • Increase magnesium intake — Magnesium can alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. It is best ingested through dark, leafy greens but also can be taken in supplement form. Magnesium oil can be applied topically to sore joint areas. Joint pain can impact daily life and make activities less enjoyable. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways that do not require harsh medications.

Rebound from a late start saving for retirement Some people do not have the ability to begin saving for retirement early on. Others may have brushed retirement savings aside for so long that they are now worried that it’s too late to begin socking away money for retirement. While it’s best to start saving for retirement as early as possible, the good news is that it’s never too late to start planning for retirement. If your 40th birthday has long passed and you’re finally thinking ahead to retirement, consider these catch-up strategies. • Research tax-advantageous retirement savings plans. A financial planner can point you in the right direction, or consult with your employer about employee programs. Deposit money into a 401(k) or 403(b) plan or another retirement vehicle. Jump on any opportunities when your employer matches invested funds. Investigate an IRA and find out if there are any government incentives. Depending on your age, you may be able to deposit more money into such accounts than other investors.
• Cut back on expenses. Cutting back on unnecessary expenses is a great way to save more money for retirement. Figure out where you can save some money you can then allocate to retirement savings. Maybe you can reduce insurance coverage on an older car or raise your deductible? Downsize cable packages or skip that costly cup of coffee on the way to work.
A little planning never hurt anyone. It’s actually more distressing to think about what could happen without Advance Funeral Planning. Your loved ones might feel overburdened by unexpected financial obligations and pressured to make complex decisions at an already emotionally difficult time... and for you, it will be too late to make your final wishes known. At Messinger Payson Funeral Home we are dedicated to guiding our families through every step of the Pre-Planning process. The wants and needs of the families we serve are our sole focus — and it’s our primary goal to make it as helpful and simple as possible. You could spend time filled with unnecessary concern when you should be enjoying life... we want you to enjoy life.

Perhaps it’s time to look for a smaller, less expensive home or a compact car instead of an SUV. • Delay your retirement. Delaying retirement gives you more time to save. If you want to work less, discuss and negotiate a phased retirement with your boss that allows you to gradually work fewer hours until you retire completely. You may be able to work part-time for several years and retire when you’re most comfortable. • Consider more aggressive funds. Even if you are over 50, you still have a few years before retirement, which leaves time to grow your retirement savings. You may want to consider more aggressive funds that can help you catch up more quickly. Just know that aggressive funds may also leave you susceptible to substantial losses. • Don’t amass debt. Pay down credit card debt before you begin to set aside money for retirement. Delaying retirement planning may mean you have to work a little harder to build up a solid reserve. But with planning, you can still enjoy retirement with security.

Successful ways to stretch retirement savings Many budding retirees plan to travel, relax and enjoy the company of their spouses when they officially stop working. But such plans only are possible if men and women take steps to secure their financial futures in retirement. According to a recent survey by the personal finance education site MoneyTips.com, roughly one-third of Baby Boomers have no retirement plan. The reason some may have no plan is they have misconceptions about how much money they will need in retirement. Successful retirees understand the steps to take and how to live on a budget. • Have a plan. Many people simply fail to plan for retirement. Even men and women who invest in an employer-sponsored retirement program, such as a 401(k), should not make that the only retirement planning they do. Speak with a financial advisor who can help you develop a plan that ensures you don’t outlive your assets. • Set reasonable goals. Retirement nest
eggs do not need to be enormous. Many retirees have a net worth of less than $1 million, and many people live comfortably on less than $100,000 annually. When planning for retirement, don’t be dissuaded because you won’t be buying a villa in Europe. Set reasonable goals for your retirement and make sure you meet those goals. • Recognize there is no magic wealth-building plan. Saving comes down to formulating a plan specific to your goals, resources, abilities and skills. Make saving a priority and take advantage of employer-sponsored retirement programs if they are offered. • Don’t underestimate spending. You will need money in retirement, and it’s best that you don’t underestimate just how much you’re going to need. No one wants to be stuck at home during retirement, when people typically want to enjoy themselves and the freedom that comes with retirement. Speak to a financial planner to develop
a reasonable estimate of your living expenses when you plan to retire. • Pay down or avoid debt while you can. Retiring with debt is a big risk. Try to eliminate all of your debts before you retire and, once you have, focus your energy on growing your investments and/or saving money for retirement. • Start early on retirement saving. It’s never too early to begin saving for retirement. Although few twenty-somethings are thinking about retirement, the earlier you begin to invest, the more time you have to grow your money. Enroll in a retirement plan now so you have a larger nest egg when you reach retirement age.

Completing the health insurance equation BY TOM RUSSELL SPECIAL TO THE RIM REVIEW
Does enrollment in Medicare, an under 65 Affordable Care Act plan, or employer group health insurance complete the health insurance equation? How can we strengthen our health insurance coverage, and plug potential costly gaps? Ongoing Extended Care
Does Medicare cover extended, chronic care? No. On page 63 of the government’s Medicare and You Handbook we read, “At least 70% of people over 65 will need long-term care (LTC) services and support at some point. Medicare and most health insurance plans, including Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies, do not pay for this type of care, sometimes called “custodial care.” Medicare pays for limited days of “Skilled Care” (medical level and rehabilitative care) — not custodial care for assistance with activities of daily living. Do under 65 employer-based health insurance policies or Affordable Care Act plans cover long-term care? No. When we consider extended care insurance, many options exist. We can start by obtaining a “recovery care” policy insuring for up to one year of care. With this coverage in place, one does not have to immediately access his or her checking account or home equity to pay for nursing home or home health care. The cost of the care is high — up to $6,000 per month or more. New options now exist with “living benefits” life insurance policies that provide chronic care options. The face amount of the policy can be tapped for these costs. The amount of the life insurance NOT used for care is then paid to the estate at death. This addresses one of the objections to tra-
ditional long-term care insurance — What if I don’t need it? Perhaps the cash value in an older life insurance policy can be transferred to obtain one of these new “combo” policies, sometimes without additional cash outlays. People live longer today, and life insurance is more affordable than it used to be. Existing annuities (or CDs) can be transferred into a new type of annuity policy that can triple the amount of money available for long-term care. If care is needed, one spends through the original deposit first. If the cost of care continues, the insurance then kicks in. If care is never needed (or money from the original deposit is left over), the original annuity deposit (plus interest) is paid to one’s heirs. When someone has considered traditional LTC insurance but decided to self-insure, this annuity/LTC option is definitely worth consideration. New laws allow the tax-free transfer from existing annuities into one of these annuity/ LTC combo policies. Yet, traditional premium based long-term care policies have benefits not available in most life insurance/ LTC combo or annuity policies, including more options to tax deduct the premium. They usually have more liberal definitions of “assistance,” making it easier to qualify for benefit payments. For example, traditional ongoing premium based LTC policies usually have a “standby” definition of needing assistance, rather than a chronic “hands on” definition. To trigger benefits, someone needs be standing by within arms length, not placing their hands on you to help you in the bathtub, for example. Big difference! And remember, extended care LTC insurance can likely NOT be acquired if you have a new significant diagnosis. It
must be obtained when you’re relatively healthy and can qualify for coverage. Hopefully we never need it, but we can never acquire long-term care insurance when and if we need it. Educating ourselves on this type of insurance deserves to be a part of our retirement and lifestyle planning. An experienced agent can prove invaluable, and help paint the big picture of all the different options. Critical Illness Insurance

Policies exist that will pay a lump sum on the diagnosis of a critical illness. They compliment, but are never intended to replace a traditional healthcare plan. Critical illness policies have improved over the years. Invasive cancer used to be the only illness covered. Newer policies have expanded to also cover heart attack and stroke. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Seniors have lots of health insurance options CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5
Insurance companies offer plans with lump sum payments of $10,000 to $100,000. If Medicare (or an under 65 Affordable Care Act health plan) covers these big three conditions, why consider adding critical illness protection? Because of potentially high out of pocket expenses from deductibles and co-insurances, as well as travel and lodging expenses. Out of pocket expenses might also include lost time at work or in one’s business. Perhaps most importantly, critical illness policies can help pay for natural and holistic treatment options that may not be covered by traditional health insurance. To have extra liquidity if a big diagnosis hits can ease much stress and provide additional options. Critical illness policies can help strengthen anyone’s health insurance, but if there’s a family history of cancer, heart attack or stroke, they should be at the top of one’s insurance priority list. You can pay dental expenses from this account, as well as prescriptions, glasses, doctor visits, labs and tests, and much more, including long-term care insurance premiums! When compared to the cost of a traditional co-pay plan, a lower cost high deductible plan combined with a Health Savings Account can make a lot of sense. Be sure your policy is HSA qualified and in place before you open the account. Conclusion
Insurance is one of the least exciting topics on earth. It’s dry and often cumbersome; however, it’s well worth our time and energy to understand our health insurance gaps, and the supplemental options that may exist to fill them. Go slow and understand the fine print, since a word or two here or there in the policy definitions can make a huge difference at claim time. About the author

Regular exercise critical for seniors BY KEITH MORRIS ROUNDUP SPORTS EDITOR
Anyone who believes that they’re too old to exercise regularly needs to think again. “I think exercise is more important for seniors than when they’re younger,” said Dr. Michael Darnell D.O., whose Payson Regional Bone and Joint practice is located at 126 E. Main St. “That’s due to the fact that as we age, we get more aches and pains, and we tend to be less active because of the arthritis or whatever those aches and pains are. And when you do that, you get weak. When we get weak, we have more pain and you get into a downward spiral. And the way to reverse that or to not even get in the downward spiral is to do routine regular exercises.” Darnell said like everyone, seniors should do regular cardiovascular training, strength training and stretching. “Cardio training involves things like using a stationary bike, walking, anything that to get your heart rate up and sustain it,” he said. “You’re exercising your heart.” “The next part of being in condition is strength training, in other words, weight lifting. It does not make any difference how old you are, you can improve your strength.” He said the benefits of weight lifting could be dramatic. “I just read an article in one of my medical journals recently that indicated that those seniors who weight train on a regular basis who have arthritic pain, it decreases their pain by 30 percent,” he said. “And those who do regular routine strength training or weight lifting, it increases their function by 25 percent. “There are also many studies of how regular weight training improves and maintains mental
function in seniors. It keeps them sharp.” And he said people shouldn’t underestimate the value of regular stretching. “The third part for general conditioning is stretching,” he said. “Old folks think just because they’re getting old, they’re gonna get stiff. You don’t have to get stiff. You only get stiff if you don’t do something about it. And you can stretch and maintain your flexibility. Darnell said everyone physically able should be doing all three of these things regularly. However, the doctor stressed that seniors shouldn’t rush into a new exercise or weight training program. “(The training) depends on what kind of shape you’re in to start with,” he said. “You have to build up to it. You start a little slow with cardio, you start with a short amount of time and gradually build it up until you can do more, until you can do
it longer. “With weight training, you start with light, light weights until you gradually get stronger. Then you add weights as you get stronger. “You should be able to do both the strength and cardio training two to three times a week, and you don’t have to do them on the same day. And stretching, is just a never-ending continual almost daily thing you have to do.” Darnell said the trainers in gyms know how to help you learn how to train properly. “The nice thing about a gym is they always have trainers or someone around who can help teach you how to use the machines correctly and safely, because that’s important, too — the last thing you want to do is go in there and injure yourself,” he said. “So unless you know what to do and how to do it correctly, a gym is the best way because you have people
who can advise you.” “Is there somebody who should not exercise? No,” he said. “Everybody should. Now there are obviously certain medical problems where that may not be good. But once they get over those medical problems then they can start exercising. “The bottom line is use it or lose it. Because if you don’t exercise, you don’t use your body and keep it in shape, you’re gonna lose the ability to use your body to do the things you want to do.” “There is not anyone who cannot benefit from routine, regular exercise. And unfortunately with the seniors, our remembrance of what we used to do is still there, but what you used to do does not count, it’s what you do right now that counts.” Darnell is a senior citizen himself. “I practice what I preach,” he said.

Losing taste horrifies foodie It got so my grandpa would only eat saltine crackers with peanut butter and canned tomatoes. “Gramps, try my roasted tomato and garlic soup! You’ll love it, if you love canned tomatoes,” I’d tell him. “Pewey! That tastes awful,” he told me after trying a bite. Then he’d reach for his The Healthy crackers and bowl of stewed tomatoes. by Michele Nelson I rolled my eyes, but I knew he’d always been a picky eater. He didn’t really care for veggies except canned string beans and fresh broccoli — he wouldn’t even eat cooked broccoli in any form — and mushrooms!? I didn’t even try. Worse yet, salad for him meant Jell-O with canned mandarin oranges or pineapple. For a foodie like me, I just didn’t get it. What about all those fantastic flavors of pungent cheeses, savory roasted garlic, complicated mushroom textures, complex sauces of berries mixed with chilies? So I started to research why he and I had such different tastes. Turns out there are tons of reasons. The National Institute of Health has spent quite a bit of time looking into this subject. They say that it all starts after a person turns 40. After that age, taste buds (just like skin cells) begin to fail to regenerate. I’m doomed. Even worse, those taste buds not only start to disappear, those that remain start to shrink. A nightmare for a foodie like me, but it got worse as I read on… The mouth starts producing less saliva. Saliva is critical to the taste receptors. The NIH states, “Its main role includes

transport of taste substances to and protection of the taste receptor. In the initial process of taste perception, saliva acts as a solvent for taste substances; salivary water dissolves taste substances, and the latter diffuse to the taste receptor sites.” Other factors that play a part in losing taste come from drug interactions, smoking, head injuries, and upper respiratory
infections. Other problems with taste come from the loss and weakening of olfactory nerves. The NIH says, “As we get older, our olfactory function declines. Not only do we lose our sense of smell, we lose our ability to discriminate between smells.” For some, that means they might not be able to smell vanilla, but sautéing onions can become overpowering.
I feel faint. What am I to do? Well, I found out there’s hope. A study by a French university on MRI’s of perfumers’ brains showed the region of the brain that controls the olfactory nerves became stronger the longer the perfumers used that part of their brain. In other words, it seems practice makes perfect — or at least helps older people keep their sense of smell. I’m saved!
If I continue to push the boundaries of my taste buds and bravely find new recipes and foods to try, I could keep my taste buds and olfactory cortex in great shape. Because to lose my sense of smell and have to limit the foods I eat because I lose my sense of taste is a purgatory I will not visit. Wish I could have done so for my grandfather. But then again, he just never had an interest.
