Summer Home and Auto Fix-Up Guide Welcome to making the summer safe and fun BY TERESA MCQUERREY RIM REVIEW EDITOR
The staff and advertisers of this special edition of The Rim Review, “Summer Home and Auto Fix-Up Guide” appreciate the time you have taken to read this publication. The wonderful weather of summer in the Rim Country makes it the perfect time for fixing up our homes to make them more sound and safe for our loved ones and the visitors many of us are likely to entertain this season. Give some thought to how you want to spend the summer; who is coming to visit and how you want to most comfortably accommodate them — and yourself. In other words, make a plan. The late Jack Myers was the manager of the Roundup when I first came to work here back in 1985. With deadlines to meet, events to cover, answering phone calls, etc., working at a newspaper sometimes feels like I am trying to juggle cats. Now, I love cats; at one point I had three of them
and a cocker spaniel. Just living with three cats is sometimes a challenge, so you might be able to imagine the likelihood that you could successfully juggle them. At any rate, Jack had this advice when things seemed to be slipping into total chaos — “Plan your work and work your plan.” I am usually able to apply that at work; but putting that into practice with housework is something with which I still struggle ... So, take the following “advice” with a grain of salt — it is what I “plan” to do, but have not yet started — maybe over vacation ... Open up the windows some evening and let the sweet summer breeze freshen the air that still may be holding onto the smells and dust and must of spring and winter. Get up early the next morning and see your space in the bright sunlight. See some cobwebs and dust bunnies, maybe that paint or paneling is getting a little old? Enjoy a healthy breakfast and get everyone talking about what needs to be done around the house and yard. Then make a chore chart assigning jobs to be completed within a certain time and plan some fun rewards when the work is done. Have everyone roll up their sleeves and get to work freshening your home for the new season — it will all go faster if you and
your family work as a team. Maybe it is just a matter of giving the rugs a good cleaning and rolling up the ones that need to be put in storage, then deep cleaning the exposed floors, the upholstery and all your furniture. If you have a ceiling fan or two, they could probably do with a good dusting and maybe tightening a screw here and there to get rid of the squeak. Could your home use a more airy and open feeling? Dust off, wrap up and put away about half the stuff on “display” on open shelves. Maybe you could also put some furniture in storage or to use in other rooms to give the main living areas more openness. For the warmer months, maybe you can just use blinds on your windows instead of both blinds and curtains. Take down all your window dressings — wash the curtains if you can and store them. Dust off and wash the blinds too. While they’re down and drying, give your windows and screens a good cleaning. You might discover a screen or two needs some repair or replacement. My living area and bedroom have an eastern exposure. I leave the windows open at night and then shut the blinds down tight in the early morning before the sun gets to much above the horizon. It is an old house, but stays surprisingly and pleasantly cool in the
summer using this strategy. Turn your mattresses and maybe get a fresh mattress cover for every bed. Clear out the mess from under the beds. Then when you remake the beds, use lighter weight sheets and maybe just a light bedspread or quilt. Experts say we sleep better in a cooler room. While working in the bedrooms, consider cleaning out and organizing your closets and drawers for the summer. Putting away cool weather clothes and accessories and shaking out the warm weather stuff. The kitchen could probably do with some lightening up for summer too. Put the soups and casserole stuff in the back of the cabinets, bring the vegetables and fruits that will work in light, cool meals to the front for easy access. Clean out and wash down the refrigerator so there is plenty of room for all those great fresh foods we can get in the markets now. Do the oven and range too. This time of year I do so little baking, the oven might as well be used for storage. Now about your car — clean it out, get it tuned up and especially make sure all that coolant stuff (fluids, hoses, etc.) are at optimum conditions. Inside this publication there is an article about DIY car care for summer and about making sure your tires are
in good shape. Tires, batteries and air conditioning systems get a hard workout this time of year. The heat plays havoc with tires and batteries. And when we get the monsoon rains following an extended dry period our tires have to be able to handle the oil, etc., that precipitation and humidity causes to rise to the surfaces of many of our roads. Air conditioning in our cars is great, but it can create tremendous grief if it goes out. Before it gets too much warmer in Rim Country, be sure your car’s AC is checked out by a professional. The same should be said for cooling systems in our homes. Even if you just use fans, make sure the blades are clean and the cords are free of imperfections. Yards and gardening are not included in this publication’s topics, but keep in mind, Payson still has restrictions about use of water outside. Stop by the town’s water department or go online to get the details. We have enjoyed more rain in recent weeks than we have during this time of year for about a decade, but water conservation never goes out of style. Make sure your property is FireWise. Check how close your trees are to your home, make sure there is little to no fuel on the ground that could make it easy for a fire to get the upper hand.

A road trip is a fun way to enjoy a summer getaway, while providing ultimate flexibility to keep your own schedule and pace. Protect your vehicle and your own safety by following these recommendations from the Car Care Council and complete a thorough pre-trip checklist before hitting the road: -- Check the brake system, and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. -- Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. -- Check hoses and belts that can become
Tips to save money at the pump As gas prices continue to drop, motorists should take advantage of their savings at the pump and invest it back into their vehicles. By spending a little now to increase fuel efficiency, drivers can multiply fuel savings and save more money at the pump, according to the Car Care Council. Here are a few simple steps for motorists to be car care aware to improve fuel efficiency and save money in the long run: • Engine performance: Keep your car properly tuned to improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. • Tire pressure: Keep tires properly
inflated and improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. • Motor oil: Improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer. • Air filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles. • Gas cap: Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air. cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. -- Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. -- Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating. Easy ways to accessorize your ride
Simple accessories can add fun and function to your daily commute or a summertime trek across the state. Keep these auto additions in mind and you’ll be stocked
up for wherever the road takes you. Seat covers: A day at the sandy beach or a messy camping trip is no match for a seat cover. Available in a variety of colors to suit individual styles and preferences, seat covers not only protect your upholstery from harsh pool chemicals or gritty sand, they also shield your skin from hot, sun-soaked materials. Floor mats: Make cleanup simple with quality floor mats. Especially helpful for families, they help reduce floor messes with a simple shake or a quick vacuum. Trash can: Trips big or small can bring about plenty of trash. Have a handy place to stash it with a convenient receptacle. Options include units that fit within cup holders, tie around the head rest and even clip to the interior door. Source: Family Features

Tips for selecting a reliable auto repair shop Work, school, errands and the other demands of family life put your vehicle at the center of it all, so when something goes wrong, you may find yourself overwhelmed. Finding a repair shop you can rely on can ease your frustration and get you back on the road. “For most people, a vehicle is their second biggest investment next to a home,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “It makes sense to take the time to select an auto repair facility that will take the best care of that investment.” Asking a few simple questions can help you identify an auto repair shop to properly care for one of your most valuable assets. The Car Care Council recommends exploring these topics before choosing where to have your car repaired: • Does the business employ certified technicians? Credentials and affiliations are indicators of professionalism and the management’s commitment to training and education. • Is the shop and customer waiting area clean and organized? Cleanliness and organization are signs of a well-run business. • Are customers greeted and treated in a friendly and respectful manner? A simple phone call to the shop to inquire about their services can give you a glimpse into how they treat customers. • Does the business provide a written estimate? The business should complete a written estimate and request your signature prior to starting any repairs on your car. • What type of warranty does the shop offer? Most auto repair

businesses offer a warranty on parts and labor, and the warranty is usually in writing or posted in the waiting area. • Does the business have a list of satisfied customers or refer-
ences that it is willing to give you? Satisfied customers and recommendations from family, friends and neighbors are helpful in finding a good shop. • Is there a website you can
visit? Many auto repair facilities have company websites that are worth checking out as they often include testimonials and additional information about the business. For a video with more advice

Warning signs a tire is about to go flat Few drivers will be fortunate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one flat tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient flats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out. But as inconvenient or dangerous as flats or blowouts can be, they also can be prevented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a flat or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such unfortunate developments can inspect their tires for the following signs. • Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may differ, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that
the tire with more wear could be about to go out. • Worn tread: Even drivers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But drivers who are unsure can employ the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires. • Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a flat or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manufacturer-recommended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly inflated tires force engines to work harder, which nega-
tively affects a car’s fuel efficiency. • Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of excessive vibration. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection. • Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a flat tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately. Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and inconvenient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a flat or blowout is likely to occur.
Routinely checking tire pressure and inflating underinflated tires is one way drivers can reduce their risk of flat tires and blowouts.

Technology can help extend life of headlights Perhaps no aspect of life has gone untouched by technology in the 21st century. Technology has changed the way we communicate, how we watch television and listen to music and even how we keep abreast of the latest happenings in our communities and abroad. Technology is also changing the way we drive and, in many ways, making today’s highways more safe. While automotive gadgets like built-in WiFi or backup cameras may be the first amenities to grab our attention, new developments in lighting technology are enhancing driver visibility and making it safer to hit the open road. Many auto manufacturers still use standard incandescent bulbs in their vehicles. But advanced lighting that’s more befitting of today’s technological standards can make it easier for drivers to see and be seen by fellow motorists. Vision LED Lights from leading automotive lighting manufacturer Philips employ cutting edge LED technology to deliver better and more dynamic lighting for applications such as brake and taillights, back up lights, side markers, fog lights, and license plate lights. Guaranteed for up to 12 years, Philips Vision LED Lights are highly resistant to extreme heat and vibration, meaning drivers are very likely to replace their vehicle long before they ever need to worry about replacing their LED lights. The right lighting can vastly improve driver visibility and safety and prove a wise investment for drivers who want to see the road better while making themselves more visible to other motorists. In addition to upgrading their vehicles’ lighting, drivers can take the following steps to ensure they’re seeing the road ahead of them as clearly as possible. • Get vision checkups. A standard ophthalmic exam is a series of tests conducted to check an individual’s vision and the health of his or her eyes. The National Institutes of Health note that the frequency of such tests depends on an individual’s age, but drivers should know that they should get screened more frequently as they age, and the NIH notes that drivers who wear contact lenses need yearly eye exams. Drivers who suspect their vision might be making it harder for them to see when behind the wheel should schedule an ophthalmic exam immediately. • Take steps to improve your reaction time and that of your fellow motorists. Personal reaction time also can influence how drivers see the road and how quickly they react to potentially negative driving conditions. Making sure you get enough sleep and exercise can increase alertness and improve your reaction time. In addition, the choices you make when upgrading your vehicle can improve the reaction time of your fellow drivers. For example, Philips Vision LEDs’ instant-on response make sure brake lights come on the moment you apply the brake, instantly alerting other drivers should you be forced to make a sudden stop. That instant response time can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet, even at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour. • Prioritize complete vehicle maintenance. No vehicle maintenance routine is complete unless it includes regular cleaning of headlight lenses, sideview mirrors
Photos provided by Philips

and interior glass and mirrors. Dirty mirrors and glass compromises driver vision, so be sure to periodically remove any debris or film buildup on such surfaces. Veteran and even novice drivers understand the importance of visibility when they get behind the wheel of their vehicles. When visibility is not an issue, drivers can more easily see their fellow motorists and better anticipate potentially dangerous situations. But when visibility is compromised, drivers and their passengers are vulnerable to a host of dangers, including inclement weather and aggressive motorists. Many things can affect drivers’ visibility on the road, but those who take a proactive approach to improving their visibility can put themselves in a better position to handle any negative situations that may arise. One of the ways to do just that is to pay more attention to your headlights. Often overlooked when performing routine vehicle maintenance, headlights must be maintained to ensure optimal visibility for drivers. The following are a few ways drivers can improve the performance of their headlights to make their vehicles safer for themselves and their passengers. • Pay attention to the headlights’ output. Perhaps the most noticeable indicator of an aging headlight is its light output. As bulbs start to dim, drivers may find themselves struggling to see during twilight and at night. That difficulty is not necessarily because drivers’ own vision is failing, but may be a result of aging bulbs whose light output is gradually reduced by the effects of humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers who notice their headlights are not producing as much light as they once did should know that reduced output is a telltale sign of aging bulbs that need to be replaced. • Say “so long” to the status quo. Recognizing dimming bulbs is just the first step toward improving the performance of your headlights. The next step is for drivers to recognize that all headlight bulbs are not created equal. Instead of replacing existing bulbs with the same type of bulbs provided by their vehicle’s manufacturer,
drivers can vastly improve their visibility by upgrading to a bulb designed to provide more light than the standard halogen bulbs found in many of today’s vehicles. Leading automotive lighting manufacturer Philips produces a range of Upgrade Headlight Bulbs that offer up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs. That’s a significant benefit to drivers, as motorists’ visual acuity is reduced by 70 percent at night, when statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate 49 percent of all fatal accidents occur. The NHTSA also notes that the fatality rate per mile driven at night is roughly three times as high as it is during daylight hours. • Find the right fit. The right headlight bulb can dramatically improve visibility when driving at night, but what’s good for the goose is not always good for the gander. That’s because motorists drive for various reasons and on various roads, so the right bulb for seniors who don’t often take to the highways will not necessarily be the best fit for commuters who routinely drive long distances. Philips makes a headlight bulb for every type of driver, and each Upgrade Headlight Bulb creates a better beam pat-
tern that is dramatically longer than that provided by standard halogen lights, ensuring drivers can safely see no matter how accustomed they are to driving at night. • Let there be light. Regardless of how effective a bulb has the potential to be, drivers who don’t routinely clean their headlights will continue to have their visibility compromised. Certain preventive measures can help drivers address headlight issues before they appear, ensuring their visibility is not compromised. When checking your oil in the driveway or even when you’re filling up at the gas station, take a few moments to inspect your headlights and address any issues that arise as soon as possible. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit includes a post-treatment that provides long-lasting UV protection for headlight lenses. The kit also includes a cleaner/polish and restorer/protector so drivers can restore their headlight lenses to “like new” quality while increasing visibility and reducing glare in as little as 30 minutes. Such quick and simple maintenance can ensure your headlights are performing optimally. More information is available at http:// www.lighting.philips.com/main/products/ automotive.

Five signs your home’s insulation is not working
Syndicate photos
Some home repairs and improvements are perfect DIY projects, but have a plan about what needs to be done, the tools needed for the task and an appropriate block of time in which to do the work. It never goes as quickly as those home improvement shows lead us to believe.
Some insulations can lose performance over time, sustain damage or simply no longer meet updated building codes. It’s an issue that can be costly, because if your home’s insulation isn’t doing its job, you could be wasting money and resources. You don’t have to be a trained professional to know you have a problem. Here are several signs that your insulation is lacking: 1. Energy bills — High energy bills are the biggest red flag, especially relative to the size, age or condition of the home. If you have a runaway energy bill, your insulation may need to be upgraded. This can be the case, even in a newer home. 2. Drafts — Do you need to put on a sweater even with the heat on, or does your air conditioner run incessantly without making enough of a difference? That’s a sign of a deficiency in your building envelope. 3. Inconsistent temperatures — Is it warm in one room, but cold in another? Are your walls or interior closets cold to the touch? It’s possible that while your whole home may not need attention, certain rooms may need to be addressed. 4. Condition of insulating materials — Consider the age of your insulation. Would it stand up to today’s building codes? Is it in good shape or is it crumbly? If your insulation
has degraded or isn’t performing, it’s time for an upgrade. But be careful, as certain types of older insulation, such as Vermiculite insulation, may contain asbestos. If you’re unsure, do not disturb it and hire a professional to conduct testing and/or removal. This should not be a do-it-yourself job. 5. You detect pests and/or moisture — Insulation — and your building envelope — can be compromised by the presence of pests. Moisture is an even bigger obstacle to optimal thermal performance, as some types of insulation can sag or collapse when damp, leaving voids and causing air to flow in and out of the building envelope. While some solutions may be more complicated, requiring the opening of the existing wall cavities, others can be addressed more easily. The best way to improve thermal performance and increase energy efficiency is to upgrade attic insulation. Laying a product like Comfortbatt insulation over existing material to achieve a minimum depth of 16 inches, or an R-value of R50, is a simple DIY project that can generate immediate results. To fully assess your home and explore remediation solutions, consider hiring a professional home energy auditor to evaluate your home’s energy performance. Even in a new home, the results may be surprising.
Tackling home maintenance projects can save you money Much like the upkeep on your car, tackling home maintenance on a regular basis will prevent problems from developing and save you from larger repair costs down the road. Some projects should be left to the professionals, but there are plenty of weekend jobs that any homeowner can easily handle, like these: Inspect your roof and make minor repairs. Winter can be especially hard on a roof. Look for ice, hail or water damage. Replace any cracked or missing shingles and clear any debris. Clean your gutters. It’s not glamorous work, but your home’s gutters play an essential role in moving water away from your home and preventing damage. Consider installing gutter guards to ensure your gutters remain functional and free from debris. Inspect windows and doors and re-caulk where
necessary. Because a proper seal is essential in both heating and cooling seasons, this job should be performed twice a year to protect against drafts and moisture, and to keep insects out. Worn weather stripping should also be replaced. Check your insulation. Attics should be insulated to R50, which can usually be achieved with an insulation depth of at least 16 inches. Top up with an insulation product that is water repellent and fire resistant. Don’t forget to ensure that your basement headers are insulated properly to prevent overworking your furnace and air conditioner. Other simple jobs include fixing leaky faucets, repairing and resealing decks, inspecting the foundation and scheduling a check-up for your HVAC system. The key is being honest about what you can handle and, when in doubt, call in the pros.

Home upgrades from the inside out Looking to do some home improvement projects? Plan ahead for the biggest impact for your budget. Follow these tips to protect your home’s air quality, use online tools to plan your project, extend your budget and enlist qualified professionals to help complete the job. REMEMBER THE BIG PICTURE
Keep all seasons in mind when planning a home upgrade, and make sure your home will be comfortable and healthy all year. The type of insulation and drywall you use can have a big impact on these factors, yet it’s not something many homeowners think about. According to a 2015 study of more than 1,100 U.S. house owners, conducted online by Harris Poll and commissioned by CertainTeed, one in five (19 percent) U.S. adults who own a house say they would give little to no consideration to insulation if planning a kitchen remodel or home addition. Even more — one in four — say this about drywall. This is a big misstep, considering the average American spends 90 percent of his or her time indoors, and indoor air pollution can damage the health and comfort of those in the home, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Health benefits aside, the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association says spending $1 on insulation will save $12 in energy costs. Look for products with built-in smart vapor retarder technology to help prevent mold and a drywall product that actually removes harmful contaminants from the air inside your home. COLOR CONCERNS? TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.
In home design, there is an increased interest in individualization and creativity. According to the online survey CertainTeed commissioned from Harris Poll, curb appeal was cited by 39 percent of house owners as the most important factor when considering an exterior home improvement project. “While consumers want their homes to stand out, they also seek colors they want to come home to year after year,” said Mike Loughery, CertainTeed director of corporate marketing communications. “Neutral and traditional colors are a good bet — you want a look that is warm and inviting.” The online poll also found that 40 percent of U.S. adults who own a house say they understand colors but are not exactly sure which color direction they would want to go when it comes to selecting a new exterior color for their home. Furthermore, 11 percent said they are “clueless” about colors and wouldn’t know where to begin. You can visualize a project prior to investing in a renovation or replacement with online resources such as the Design Center at www.CertainTeed.com/ DesignCenter. MAKE YOUR INVESTMENT COUNT
If you want to maximize the return on your investment, consider kitchen remodels, additions and exterior projects that impact curb appeal, as all will give you a big bang for your buck. These were among the top projects listed in the “2014 Remodeling Cost vs. Value” report released this year by Remodeling and Realtor magazines. HIRE SMART

your side. Reputable contractors make a big difference in your satisfaction, the quality of the installation and the selection of products. For example, the National Roofing Contractor’s Association says most rooftop problems are due to installation workmanship, not material failure. Organized tools ease home repair, car care ments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap wood to use to make your own storage shelves or a work bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. Despite other intentions, homeowners often turn their garages into storage centers for random, little-used items, leaving little to no room for the tools and even vehicles that actually belong in a garage. Such homeowners may turn to sheds to store their garage overflow and keep yard equipment at the ready, but storage sheds are not immune to clutter, and homeowners may find the very structure erected to keep them organized requires a bit of organization itself. A well-organized shed can save homeowners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of work gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of what you have so you know whether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good invest-

Enhance home with room-to-room additions Easily add quality and comfort to favorite rooms When considering a home renovation, think outside the box for design inspiration and setting the overall tone. With homeowners staying in their homes longer due to the economy, renovations should focus on usability and personal style. For those homeowners looking to sell, the market is still very much a buyer’s space, so quality additions that increase value are certainly top of mind. Luckily, there’s no need to knock down walls or move plumbing to make an impact — simply start with small, quality updates to pack a dramatic punch for less money. Here are some ways to add quality and comfort within the different spaces of your home: ENTRYWAY
As the first thing visitors see, your front door should always provide a good impression, reflecting the beauty that emanates throughout your home. With doors, matching the exterior and interior creates a flow into outdoor living spaces. Using doors as a part of the overall aesthetic can also allow for some creativity with glass accents or bold color choices. Choose a reliable door manufacturer, such as Masonite, that offers a wide breadth of finishes and styles using wood, steel and fiberglass. LIVING ROOM
Add decorative touches to your living room with repurposed items found around the house. Fill a decorative pitcher or an old tin watering can with fresh flowers from the garden to add elegance to your coffee table. Wrap assorted globe lighting fixtures or mason jars with wire and hang them in a grouping to display votive candles. For an eclectic and shabby chic feel, turn a vintage drawer on end to use as a bookshelf or bring in an old wooden crate to use as a side table. KITCHEN
Refreshing your kitchen doesn’t require a major update. Add a new color to existing cabinetry by refinishing or adding a new coat of paint. Would you like to add a glossy shine to the kitchen? Simply apply mesh-back glass tile to fit the dimensions of cabinet door panels. Finish the update with a modern touch by replacing outdated hardware with the many new, stylish options available. BATHROOM
From tiles and countertops to faucets and showerheads, the options are endless for bathroom updates. With wall-hung, stand-alone or pedestal styles, your choices for a new vanity are no exception. During a renovation, some homeowners begin their project by focusing on other bathroom elements like those mentioned above. But starting with the addition of a new vanity will set the stage for your bathroom and provide a focal point for the other design elements. ROOMS THROUGHOUT
From the master bedroom to the hall entryway, hardwood floors provide the ultimate in beauty and ambiance. Refinishing gives your existing tired, worn out floors
an instant upgrade that shines from room to room. By focusing on a few quality updates,
you can add beauty and comfort to your home to be enjoyed for many years or add value in a competitive housing market. For

Maintaining bird feeders and bird baths essential to avian health Bird watching is a pastime enjoyed by people of all ages. While many people trek into the woods to see their favorite birds, homeowners can take steps to entice these fascinating and feathered friends right to their backyards. Homeowners who want to attract birds to their properties can do so by providing the birds food, shelter and places to wash up or cool off. Installing a bird feeder and a birdbath in your yard is one way to attract a bevy of winged creatures that can provide hours of enjoyment. Establishing a bird-friendly environment may seem as simple as hanging a feeder on a pole or tree and erecting a birdbath nearby. But a certain level of maintenance is needed to keep birds healthy and happy. According to the experts at the Bird Watcher’s Digest, recent research indicates feeders can sometimes be a source of disease for the birds visiting them. The Audubon Society echoes that warning, saying that bird feeders and baths can serve as transmission stations for diseases such as aspergillosis, avian pox and salmonellosis. Recently, scientists noted that the spread of trichomonad protozoan parasites is on the rise, especially among mourning dove and band-tailed pigeon populations. Such warnings are not meant to deter budding birding hobbyists. Organizations like the Audubon Society hope that such warnings send the message that disinfection and maintenance is necessary to maintain sanitary environments for birds. Doing so is relatively easy and well worth the time for birding enthusiasts. • The Humane Society of the United States advises cleaning hanging feeders once every two weeks or more often if they’re heavily used. Ground-feeding designs should be cleaned every two days. Feeders can be immersed in a very-diluted solution of bleach to water (nine parts water to one part bleach). Let soak for a few minutes, and then scrub the feeder with a stiff brush or scouring pad before rinsing. Allow the feeder to dry completely before refilling it with seed. • Birdbaths should be emptied of water each day. Brush or wipe the bath clean, then rinse and refill with fresh water. Do not leave standing water overnight; otherwise birdbaths can easily become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other parasites. • Frequently collect discarded seed hulls and clean bird droppings from beneath feeders. If the area around the feeder has become especially soiled, relocate the feeder elsewhere and clean its initial location. • Follow proper instructions with regard to seed and other bird food. For example, reduce the amount of suet offered in hot weather. Heat can cause suet to spoil, and sticky suet can become stuck in birds’ feathers and make it hard for them to keep clean. • Try to provide more than one feeder and birdbath to prevent overcrowding. Crowding can contribute to the spread of disease. • Do not situate feeders and birdbaths under perches where they can be soiled by droppings. • If you notice birds look sick or are acting strangely, halt feeding and bathing to prevent healthy birds from becoming ill. Wait a week before resuming feeding and notify wildlife officials if you find dead or sick birds around your property. • Locate feeders and baths at least 30 feet away from windows so reflections do not confuse birds and collide with the glass. • Store seed in a dry container with a tight-fitting lid to prevent mold from forming and moisture from getting in. Creating a thriving habitat for bird watching is easier than one might think. But once birds begin visiting a yard, homeowners must diligently maintain clean feeders and birdbaths to ensure the birds stay as healthy as possible. Any questions about wild-bird care can be directed to a local Audubon Society chapter or by visiting a pet store or bird hobby center.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Making things more complicated than they need to be can be a problem for the typically orderly Lamb. Try to look for a less intricate way to accomplish the same goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Avoiding personal involvement in a troubling situation might be advisable at this time, especially since you probably don’t have all the facts. The weekend brings a surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A problem with a colleague you thought had been resolved could recur. However, this time you’ll be able to rely on your record to get a quick resolution in your favor. Good luck. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Giving your self-esteem a boost could be a good idea for the Moon Child, who might feel a bit daunted by the week’s occurrences. Just focus on all your positive accomplishments. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) The “mane” attraction for the Lovable Lion this week is -what else? -- love. New relationships move to new levels, while long-standing partnerships are strengthened. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) A recent workplace problem will prove to be one of miscommunication, and once the matter is settled, you should have a better chance of getting your proposals approved. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Good news! After dealing pretty much in the dark with a matter that seemed to be taking forever to resolve, you should soon be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A positive message should help lift that energy-draining sense of anxiety, and you should soon be able to deal with even the peskiest matter, whether at work or personal. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Try to control that heated Sagittarian temperament while dealing with what you believe to be an unfair matter. A cool approach is the best way to handle things. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Nursing hurt feelings could keep you from learning what went wrong. Ask your partner, a family member or a trusted friend to help you reassess your actions in the matter. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Nature is dominant this week. Try to spend time outdoors with someone special. An act of kindness in the past might be recalled by a person you believed was out of your life. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) An upcoming career decision could be based on how well you might be able to apply your artistic talents. Be sure to use the finest samples of your work to make a strong impression. BORN THIS WEEK: Doing good things for others comes easily to you. You are considered a good friend, even by those you might hardly know.
