ASU SUN DEVILS CAMP TONTOZONA
Payson welcomes ASU faithful BY MICHELE NELSON ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
Goodie bags packed? Check. Parking arranged? Check. Golf tournaments organized? Check. The Town of Payson has a slew of preparations ready for the onslaught of Arizona State University (ASU) alumni and family arriving in Rim Country to celebrate the football team at Camp Tontozona. Practice over, Payson Parks and Recreation Director Cameron Davis and Mayor Kenny Evans believe they have the right plays to score a touchdown for Rim Country during Tontozona week — starting with banners welcoming Tontozona visitors as they drive into Payson on Highway 87 and east on Highway 260 toward Camp Tontozona. In case the weather decides not to play nice, Davis has arranged for the ASU team to practice on the south soccer field at Rumsey Park. So guests know when and where to go for football practice and scrimmages, as well as where to eat and what to do in Rim Country, Davis has created an Activities Guide that will be in the Payson Roundup on Tuesday, Aug. 12. “This guide will also be handed out to everyone that comes to Camp Tontozona,” said Davis. Davis also worked with ASU Athletics to send the Activities Guide to all ASU alumni via email. To top that off, Davis coordinated with the Payson Pro Rodeo Committee to create an “ASU Fan Appreciation Performance” on Aug. 16 during the 1 p.m. performance of the August Doin’s Rodeo at the Payson Event Center just south of town. “$10 discount coupons will be given to everyone that comes out to Camp Tontozona,” said Davis. “These dis-

count coupons are redeemable at the performance.” To make their visit memorable, Davis partnered up with the Rim Country Chamber of Commerce to stuff more than 3,000 goodie bags with offers and discounts from Rim Country businesses. To give out those goodie bags, the chamber and the town recreation

department will man a booth to direct visitors to all the things there are to see and do in Rim Country at Camp Tontozona. As for Mayor Evans, he had behindthe-scenes coordination with ADOT to make sure the 8,000 people that come to the Saturday scrimmage have a place to park. Evans also worked to coordinate
other activities with ASU visitors, including three golf tournaments — one at Payson Golf Course, another at Chaparral Pines and one at the Rim Golf Club. Evans will also host a Presidential Engagement Program that will bring many high level supporters from ASU and the region together to discuss ASU in Payson.

Coach excited about the season BY KEITH MORRIS ROUNDUP SPORTS EDITOR
The Sun Devils have improved in each of Todd Graham’s first two seasons as Arizona State’s football coach, posting their first winning season in five years in 2012 and going 10-4 a year ago and winning the Pacific Conference-12 South Division championship. But the season ended on a sour note as North champ Stanford beat them 3814 in the Pac-12 title game in Tempe to reach the Rose Bowl and Texas Tech topped the Devils 37-23 in the Holiday Bowl. So there’s still room for improvement. “Obviously we would have liked to beat Stanford and win the conference championship and win the Rose Bowl,” Graham said. “We obviously didn’t get that done and didn’t play very well in the bowl game. That was something that I think motivated our players, motivated our staff. We’ve got unfinished business, that’s to win that Pac-12 championship.” The loss of nine seniors from last year’s defense is a big reason the Pac12 media ranked the Sun Devils No. 3 in the Pac-12 South Division in the presea-
son poll behind UCLA and USC. Oregon is picked to finish ahead of two-time Pac-12 champ Stanford in the North and the Ducks are also picked to win the conference championship. The Sun Devils, who finished last season ranked No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches Poll after dropping three spots following the bowl loss, are listed at No. 18 in the preseason Coaches Poll. But there’s no doubt that the big questions involve the defense. “Obviously, those guys will be missed,” Graham said of the defensive casualties. “But we’ve got great team speed, we’ve got good guys behind them that are working, developing and we’ve got a lot of confidence in them.” Offsetting the huge losses on the defensive side of the ball is all the talent returning from an explosive offense that averaged 39 points a game and scored 50 or more six times. Leading the way is third-year senior starter Taylor Kelly, junior running back D.J. Foster and junior receiver Jaelen Strong. “We led the Pac-12 in scoring last year in conference play,” Graham said. “It was one of the most explosive offenses in the country. And we’ve got our quarterback, Taylor Kelly back, we’ve

are the things that I’m the most proud of.” He said there’s no doubt that going 18-9 the last two seasons after suffering through a combined mark of 21-28 the previous four years instills confidence in the players. “We’re right where we need to be,” Graham said. “We’re going into year three and have got a great deal of confidence. This is the best team that I’ve had from a leadership standpoint, from a character standpoint and just what we call the Sun Devil Brotherhood — it’s how close they are. We’re excited about the season and feel good about where we’re at.” ASU was 7-0 at home last year before the Pac-12 Championship Game. “I look on last year and am very grateful to those seniors and grateful to our fans,” Graham said. “We were 7-0 at home. I don’t think you can look back with any regret. To be undefeated at home in the regular season and host the conference championship game and win the Pac-12 South and graduating our student athletes and doing things with class and character, I can’t look at anything the last couple of years with anything but (a) positive (feeling).”

got the bulk of our offensive line back and we’re gonna be better, bigger and stronger up front. D.J. Foster, one of the most dynamic players in the country, is coming back. And it’s a deep running back corps. And Jaelen Strong, a topfive projected draft pick, is coming back. It’s one of the most talented receiving corps. This is the best offensive football team that I’ve ever coached.” Three starters are back on the offensive line, including senior leader Jamil Douglas. The arrival of junior guard Christian Westerman (6-4, 304), who sat out last year after transferring from Auburn, makes the outlook for the Oline even brighter. The coach is also high on ASU’s special teams. “We’ve got the talent, the depth and speed to have the best special teams we’ve ever had,” Graham said. Graham said he’s proud of the caliber of student-athletes in the program since he’s been in Tempe. “We’ve got 70 of our 110 players that are scholar ballers who are operating at 3.0 (grade point average) or higher,” the coach said. “And I think the way our players represent our fans with class, character and toughness on the field

Tontozona tradition spans 50 years BY TIM EHRHARDT SPECIAL TO THE ROUNDUP
It is a place and event that many Arizona State Sun Devil alums and fans hold dear: August football practice at Camp Tontozona northeast of Payson. How did it start? And why is it so important to many? In 1958, what was then known as Arizona State Teachers College hired 29-year-old Frank Kush to be their head football coach. Playing in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association, his first two teams had records of 7-3 and 10-1 as the school became a university. The college/university had a retreat by Kohl’s Ranch on Tonto Creek. In 1960 Kush came up and went fishing. He saw the potential of the place, went back to Tempe and tried to figure out a way for the Sun Devils to have preseason practice there. The brutal summer heat of the Phoenix area made preparing for the season difficult. Kush was able to sell the administration on it and they began practicing there that year. Over the next two decades Kush’s teams won… a lot. His teams went 176-54-1 and fall practice at Tontozona became part of a winning tradition that alums embraced. Even after Kush left the program, the Devils kept coming and, with the exception of a couple years under former coach Dennis Erickson, have continued to practice there. FIELD OF DREAMS In the eyes of many Sun Devils, the field at Camp Tontozona is a field of dreams. If you replace baseball in the movie quote with Camp Tontozona, you’ll get a sense of how fans and former players feel about the place. It is a place where dreams can come true. A player can enter camp as a fourth depth string player and after many hard days of practice, leave as the starter. It was never easy. Kush never meant it to be. For players it has been a place to focus on football and bond with your teammates. For fans, it’s been a place to get away from the heat of Phoenix and watch your favorite team prepare for the upcoming season. Sun Devil teams have indeed been “erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again.” That is the nature of life and it is certainly the nature of college athletics where athletes generally have four years of eligibility over a five-year span. The fall home of the Sun Devils, Sun Devil Stadium, has undergone many changes. And Tontozona has too — freshmen now stay in better lodgings than seniors 40 years ago ever did and
Legendary ASU football coach Frank Kush (above) went fishing on Tonto Creek in 1960 and saw the potential of the area as a place to hold preseason practices out of the brutal summer heat of the Valley. He was able to sell the administration on the idea and Camp Tontozona was born. With the exception of a couple years, the team has been practicing here for more than two decades.
“America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again. Oh... people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.” — James Earl Jones as author Terence Mann to Ray Kinsella in the movie “Field of Dreams” the field has been improved. But the setting, the mountain behind it with the creek flowing down below and the field in front of it, that’s still how it was 50 years ago. It has been a constant through the years. It is a place where players enter as wide-eyed freshmen just trying to earn some playing time and leave as team leaders years later, continuing to pass on the winning Sun Devil tradition. The Sun Devils have had many great players cross the field at Tontozona: Plummer, Allen, Haynes, White, McDaniel and Jefferson, just to name a few. There are too many greats to list here. Adam Archuleta came as a walk-on just trying to make the team in 1996. He made it, redshirted, and by his senior year in 2000 he was a leader and a star, who would go on to play seven years in the NFL. And who could forget Pat Tillman; a player who liked to go to Tonto Creek after practice and jump off a high ledge into the water; a tradition that others, including Coach Todd Graham, now
carry on. Pat Tillman later played in the NFL and after 9/11 joined the military and gave his life for his country. Towering over Camp Tontozona is a mountain now known as Mount Kush. Many players coached by Kush found themselves “taking a hike” after one too many practice mistakes. Today’s Sun Devils hike it to remember and appreciate those who built the tradition that they continue. The experience of football at Camp Tontozona extends beyond the field to those who watch the practices. Year after year many of the same faces come, engaging in yet another happy maroon and gold reunion under the cool, tall pines. It is a place where you see the future. You see flashes of brilliance in a player, flashes being the key word. After he gains a little bit more consistency, a year or two later you see him as a starter and eventually as a star and leader. In a decade after that you may see him with his family on the hillside alongside you, watching a new
generation move forward to great things. Tontozona is a place where coaches yell. Repeatedly. Early and often. There is no street noise to drown them out either. During a typical weekday practice, the yell of a coach from across the field can be heard loud and clear by those watching. You see the sportscasters making their daily reports, making Phoenicians yearn for the cool, tall pines. You see the team’s radio voices studying the team for the upcoming year. You may see the biggest of university administrators, people such as Dr. Michael Crow, on the sidelines a few feet in front of you. Naturally, people come. They most definitely come. The Saturday scrimmage that ends camp draws more than 5,000 people. That follows on the heels of weekday practices that see a growing group of people throughout the week, many of whom just had to take a day off work to come see the Sun Devils practice. Football at Camp Tontozona is an event and place that reminds attendees of all the great times they’ve had cheering on the Devils. It almost certainly also helps bring back memories of their own times at summer camps. Football at Camp Tontozona is an event and place where tradition is continued and passed along to others in one of the most unique settings in sports.

Tontozona boosts area economy BY KEITH MORRIS ROUNDUP SPORTS EDITOR
While the Fourth of July Weekend still ranks as the biggest boon for Rim Country businesses, the Arizona State University football team’s annual week at Camp Tontozona provides a major shot in the arm, as well. The camp, scheduled this year for Aug. 12-16, culminates with an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday. That scrimmage attracted approximately 8,000 spectators in 2012, when Sun Devils head coach Todd Graham brought his squad back to the area for the first time since 2007, according to Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director Cameron Davis. Davis is expecting similar numbers this year, which translates into an economic boost for Payson-area businesses. “If you figure each of those people spends an average of $35, that’s $140 for a family of four and $280,000 in gross revenue for the entire area,” Davis said. “And that’s probably on the low side. But it’s probably somewhere between $200,000-300,000.” Since it’s located near Camp Tontozona, Christopher Creek eateries enjoy great business on the day of the scrimmage. “Christopher Creek restaurants were humming after the scrimmage last year,” Davis said. “It’s their best day of the year. They’re ecstatic to have Camp Tontozona back in Rim Country because their cash registers ring throughout the day.” Although several hundred people visit the camp during

the week to get a look at the team, the scrimmage is the big draw as thousands of Valley residents drive up to see the action. Those who don’t arrive early for the scrimmage face a very long walk down Highway 260 with cars lined up on the side of the road. “They could be walking for miles,” Davis said. “Parking is
just not available. Get there early.” Some people arrive on Friday and spend the night in a hotel/motel with an eye on arriving early on Saturday to get a prime parking spot. So, a hike in Rim Country after completing the day’s events at Camp Tontozona sounds refreshing — but where to go? The following three hikes have easy terrain.
PINE TRAILHEAD
HORTON CREEK
One of the most pleasant hikes starts near Camp Tontozona across from Kohl’s Ranch: the Horton Creek Trail. The trail meanders next to and near Horton Creek, named after the family that had a near by ranch. The hike starts halfway up to the Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery. At the first bridge, find a parking spot in the lot, climb up toward the campground and find the trail entrance to the left. The most difficult part of the trail includes picking ones way through the river rocks, but after that adventure, the trail offers little difficulty with soft dirt and a beautiful single track through meadows and next to the stream. Trees offer shade for most of the length of the trail, even on a hot sum-
mer day. Horton Creek Trail is so gentle, even toddlers barely able to keep their balance walk it easily. Horton Creek does have a spring source four miles up. The spring gushes out of the mountainside crystal clear and delicious and ready to drink with no filter. Challenge is it takes eight miles to make the complete trip. Set aside a few hours if planning on the round-trip. Most hikers prefer to hike up as far as they wish, then find a quiet spot to enjoy the creek. The gentle flow and shallow pools allow toddlers a safe

place to splash about. GRANITE DELLS
If walking off a big meal from a Payson restaurant is the goal, drive out to the end of East Phoenix Street to the entrance of the Granite Dells hiking area. Locals rave about the beauty of the stones, trees and views of granite cliffs. The trails weave in and out of huge stands of trees and by tumbles of boulders easy to climb and explore. Clear signs keep hikers from getting lost. The trail system can take a hiker to
Explore more of the Rim Country by heading north of Payson on Highway 87 up to the Pine Trailhead outside of Pine. Easy to see, the trailhead offers access to trails as short as the twomile Pine View Trail or as long as the 50-mile Highline Trail. The trailhead also serves as an entrance to the Arizona Trail, an 800-mile trail that runs from the Mexico border on the south to the Utah border on the north. To find the easy route, take the trail entrance through an old wooden post entryway. Take the trail that goes to the right, when faced with the first choice. The trail winds through ponderosa pines and eventually crosses a creek, then opens up to a view of Pine and its cabins. The loop eventually comes around and drops hikers off into the parking lot. This trail has gentle slopes and plenty of places to stop to rest or for children to play by the creek.
