ROY ANDREWS
1940 FORD PICKUP When Roy Andrews purchased the 1940 Ford Pickup it was truly a “basket case.” It was minus engine and transmission and the fenders were in the bed of the truck. The truck had been sitting in a field at a small airport in Imperial Valley, California. The project took five-and-a-half years to complete. It now has a 5.0 Ford “Crate Motor” and a C-4 transmission and a 2400 Stall Converter. The motor is carbureted with an Edelbrock Manifold and a Holley Carburetor. The rear end is from a Mustang and has Coil Over Suspension. The front end is from a 1974 Mustang II with power assisted disc brakes and power rack & pinion steering. It has a tilt steering column with a Grant Steering Wheel. The gauges are electronic by VDO and the music comes from a Pioneer AM-FM CD. The music is pushed through four Pioneer speakers. The bed has aluminum Diamond Plate. The ceramic coated headers push the exhaust through Flowmaster 50 Series mufflers.

SHIRLEY BERTRAM
LARRY BERTRAM
1966 FORD MUSTANG
1973 MERCURY COUGAR
Shirley Bertram was given this beauty as a wedding gift when she and Larry married in 2007. Larry had the car in his collection for about 10 years before giving it to his bride. He said it took a couple of years
to restore it and now they display it in shows. The Mustang has won a number of first place awards. In 2010 it took Best Mustang Coupe honors in the Route 66 Car Show in Kingman, Ariz. where 845 cars were entered.
This 1973 Mercury Cougar is the latest addition to Larry Bertram’s fleet of collector cars. He said he is just the third owner. Its previous owner spent 15 years doing restoration work, but never completed the job. So, when Larry
bought the car, he finished the restoration in a little more than a year. The retired automotive teacher started his collection when he moved to Payson in 1994. He has a Crosley he’s doing now.

CARL & JUDY CURTIS
DOUG & SHERRILL MAGNUSON
1957 CORVETTE
1940 CHEVY COUPE
Carl and Judy Curtis’ 1957 Corvette was purchased in 1985. The car had no motor, no paint and the transmission was in the trunk. Over the next five years, the
Corvette was transformed back to original condition. Carl and Judy moved to Payson from California in 2003 and enjoy driving around Rim Country.
This is Rachel. Doug Magnuson has owned her since 1958. Her original owners were an elderly couple who bought the 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Coupe and drove it from Massachusetts to California where it was sold when the husband died. The next owner was Magnuson’s neighbor in Pasadena. They had Rachel for 17 years before he was able to buy her. His restoration work – done while he was a teen working at Clark’s Top & Body Works – included Ford’s rack & pinion steering, later he added 1970 Chevelle front disc brakes, a 350350 Vortec, Chevy S/B, 700R4 and Vintage Air. Another upgrade is the paint job. For years Rachel sported 1960 Cadillac black. In 2005 Magnuson painted her with PPG Base/Clear Black/Cranberry.

JOHN GOOCH
TOM GOSSARD
1950 FORD 4-DOOR
’32 FORD VICTORIA
Jack and Barbara Gooch bought their 1949 Ford 4-Door in 2009 out of New Jersey. The original miles at the time of purchase, were 54,500. The engine was overhauled at
50,000. The car is all original with the exception of the paint. Since buying the car, the couple has added new tires, re-chromed the front bumper and hood ornament.
The Gossards cruised Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank, Calif. — just like they did in the 1960s. They think part of the fun of driving a hot rod is that it helps to relive their youth, when life was much simpler. Today — unlike in the days of their youth — the couple have enough money to have a hot rod that is painted and upholstered — things considered a luxury in bygone days. Also, today’s hot rod has an engine and drive-train that is safer, stops better and gets them from one place to another without breaking down. So, the Gossards can enjoy reliving their youth with the benefit of today’s advancements.

This is one of the original Mustangs. It was introduced April 17, 1964 and this car was manufactured in Detroit in June of that year. It is a rare Poppy Red in color, 289 V8 with 4 barrel carb and a factory installed Borg-Warner four-speed transmission (only three of these came out). It is all original with 65,000 documented miles. The
Gundersons have the complete history of the car, including original window sticker and the first owner’s purchase contract. It received a national first place medallion award from the Antique Auto Club of America at its Spring Meet in Gainesville, Fla. in 2005. The fabulous car still drives beautifully and the body is as straight as an arrow.

GORDON METCALF
KEN & CAROL SIGSBEE
1932 FORD VICKY 1956 FORD PICKUP & 1940 FORD COUPE
Gordon Metcalf’s two beauties have both enjoyed some modern upgrades. New upholstery, air conditioning and other enhancements just add to the joy of having these two collector vehicles ready for a rally or a show like the Beeline Cruise-In. The Vicky, ZZ454, has 450 HP, Turbo 350 Trans, Ford 8”/3:00 gears. The Ford Deluxe Coupe has 350/overbore, 350 Trans/lockout converter, Lokar Shifter, nova rear/3:23.
Ken Sigsbee had been looking for a 1956 Ford Pickup forever. Checking for one every place he and his wife Carol traveled, plus in the newspapers and trade papers. Finally, on the Internet, he came across a Candy Apple Red 1956 Ford Pickup in Fayetteville, Ark.
It came with a sad story — The young man who was building it had just sent it to the paint shop, but was killed in a bad accident just two days later. It came back to Rim Country needing a lot of work. But now it’s one of the flashiest vehicles around.

MIKE HANSEN
1979 Z28 CAMARO Mike Hansen has had this great old Camaro just a couple of years, but he also has its complete history. He is just its third owner. A friend of his had it for six or seven years before him, having bought it from the original owner. Hansen said he kept bugging his friend to buy it and finally was able to convince him to turn it over. The car made its debut in the Rim Country Classic Auto Club show just last year, though his friend had shown it a few times before that. The Camaro is all original except for the engine, which is a ZZ4 V8 with 4-speed transmission. It has been joined in the Hansen fleet by a 1958 Chevy Pickup. That vehicle is currently in the rebuilding process. Hansen said he has always liked older vehicles — something he grew up with. He said his dream collector car would be a hot rod 1936 Ford Pickup. The collector gene runs in Hansen’s family, both his sons have classics, one has a 1966 Chevy Pickup and the other has a 1966 Ford Pickup. The older boy’s vehicle is a show truck, he said. None of the collector vehicles are daily drivers, he said, though his Camaro could be.

PETE & JAN HOLD
1957 CHEVROLET Pete and Jan Hold have been crazy about cars since they were teens. This 1957 green and white Chevy is the most recent addition to their collection. The couple bought it in January 2006. It was a new car, but had some paint problems, Pete said. So he had the paint redone, put in power steering and a tilt column. He said it took about a year to get it ready for the show circuit. The Holds have been collecting cars for about 11 years. The first one they bought was a 1934 Ford sedan, which they still have. Over the years they have bought about 20 collector cars and sold a few of them. The cars have taken them to about 90 shows throughout Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and California. The Holds have even gone to Detroit, Mich. for a show. It was a General Motors anniversary show and they took a 1956 station wagon. Hold displays about 20 of his trophies in his shop at home. “I’m not a trophy hound. I go to have fun and see old friends,” he said. The Holds have been members of the Rim Country Classic Auto Club since 1995.

Community support critical
Gearheads will once again be in seventh heaven when the 2011 Beeline Cruise-In Charity Car Show takes over Green Valley Park at the west end of Historic Main Street in Payson on April 30. The show is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
BY TERESA MCQUERREY RIM REVIEW EDITOR
No matter what the event or which nonprofit in the area hosts it, support from the community through sponsorships is critical to making the event a success. Throughout its 18-year history, the Beeline Cruise-In presented by the Rim Country Classic Auto Club has been fortunate to have a solid corps of community sponsors behind the event. Sponsors for the 2011 Beeline Cruise-In Charity Car Show are broken down into four categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Copper. Platinum sponsors are KCMA FM 98.5, the Town of Payson, and the Rim Country Classic Auto Club. Gold level sponsors are Amon Builders, Rim Country Retirement Community, Payson Jewelers, the Payson Roundup, and Bubbles of Joy. Silver sponsors are Waste Matters, Payson Concrete, Edward Jones/Ross Hage, Car Quest Auto Parts, Chili’s Grill and Bar, Best Western Payson Inn, Payson Dental Care, Mike’s Auto Body, Payson Barber Shop, Dairy Queen, Lil’ Stinker Septic Service, Printing by George, and Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. Copper level sponsors are El Rancho Mexican Restaurant, Wells Fargo Bank, Economy Inn, Ironhorse Signs, Majestic Mountain Inn, Comfort Inn, Days Inn, and Sears.

2011 BEELINE CRUISE-IN & CHARITY AUTO SHOW
Cars are stars, but other activities fun BY TERESA MCQUERREY RIM REVIEW EDITOR
The stars of the 18th Annual Beeline Cruise-In & Charity Auto Show are the cars of course, but the other attractions add to the fun of the April 29 and April 30 event. Friday activities at Green Valley Park are geared for the car entrants, members of the Rim Country Classic Auto Club, which hosts the event, and sponsors. However, the public is welcome to meander over to the park at the west end of Payson’s Historic Main Street and check out the vehicles as they arrive or get ready for the 4 p.m. cruise around town. The actual car show Saturday opens to the public at 8 a.m. and continues throughout the day with raffles, a 50-50 drawing, judging of the vehicles, oldies music and items for sale from vendors, including food. The big raffle prizes are a $750 ring from Payson Jewelers for the women and a “hot rod” grill for the men, of approximately the same value, said Ken Gunderson, chairman of this year’s show for the RCCAC. “The grill was a big hit last year. It looks like a hot rod engine on a motor stand,” he said. Among the vendors participating this year will be stations selling Montana barbecue; hot dogs, hamburgers and brats; homemade and novelty ice cream; Bondurant Racing with two of its race cars; and those with car-oriented merchandise. Proceeds from every Beeline Cruise-In are distributed to Rim Country charities. Recipients of 2010 car show proceeds were presented in July to Veterans Helping Veterans; Habitat for Humanity; Payson Supply Line; DPS Quilt Angels; Pine Strawberry Food Bank; Payson Helping Payson; Kaitie’s Closet; Big Brothers Big Sisters; Tonto Rim Search and Rescue; St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank; and the Payson Senior Center.
when a few people had a common interest in restoring and driving classic cars. They cruised around Payson where they met and talked about their cars. The meeting places were Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pioneer Title and Phil White Ford parking lots. As the group flourished and the number of members grew, Phil White Ford became the main meeting place with the management providing a meeting room upstairs. In 1994, Rim Country Classic Auto Club members decided to have their first annual car show to help charities in the town of Payson. Since then the car shows have been held in the following locations throughout the years: 1994 Pioneer Title; 1995 Payson Courthouse; 1996-97 Chapman History of the club Chevrolet; 1998-2000 Payson High School parking The Rim Country Classic Auto Club, as it is lot; 2001-03 Mazatzal Casino parking lot; and known today, had its beginnings back in 1993 since 2004 Main Street and Green Valley Park.

Today, the Rim Country Classic Auto Club has its regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Tiny’s Family Restaurant on East Highway 260. The general meetings are open to the public — whether you own a classic vehicle or not. The Rim Country Classic Auto Club has a yearly calendar, as do most other car clubs, to plan cruises and make hotel and car show reservations. The Rim Country Classic Auto Club has on its agenda at least two cruises a month and they range from a single day at the Craft Fair in Pine, Ariz. to three-day cruises to Pinetop, Ariz. for the “Run to the Pines” and the “Route 66 Fun Run” in Kingman, Ariz.
