Sophie Davis, general manager, said all 350 employees at the hotel and casino play an important role. “It means a lot to all of us,” she said. “To be compared to where we were to have this award — coming from nothing to being the best, it is very rewarding.” RUNNERS-UP: PostNet, Rim Country Health & Retirement

Best Business Person Mike Conklin, PostNet “It’s a compliment to the people who work with me – eight wonderful employees,” said Conklin. “Really, it’s mostly Crystal, Amber and Molly. PostNet is involved in lots of things — the Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity — we give them free services. No one has money to spend. “We have 10,000 customers annually — 100 to 150 daily. The Internet is making things very difficult. But people like to come in and get that attention — God willing. We’ve lost a lot of business to business accounts, what we haven’t lost is customers — maybe 2-3 percent.” Conklin moved to Payson in 2008 from Michigan. “I would never leave Payson. It’s the people. They show up to things like this — they support small businesses. The people here are just fantastic.” RUNNERS-UP: Cindy McCannon (Buffalo Bar & Grill) Harvey Pelovsky (Rim Country Health & Retirement)

Sawmill Theatres has six screens and shows about 150 movies annually. The theater draws in about 3,000 customers a week — which adds up to about 150,000 annually. Pretty good for a town of 15,000. The manager credits survival through the downturn to “Staying consistent — and trying to take care of the customer. This is good. We try to keep a good mix.”
“We are a great part of the community and the community recognizes the services we offer and thanks to the Payson Roundup we have had great publicity this year so the community hears Time Out now and recognizes what Time Out is,” said Camille Levee, Time Out’s executive director. Best Gas & Convenience Store
Best Hardware Store
Best Automotive Repair
Maverik Ace manager says the key to surviving the downturn is “Service is #1 — absolutely #1. Service is also #2 — and #3.” The store has 16 employees who handle about 250 customers a day. “Business has picked up: We think the economy is coming back — but the only thing that keeps us open is service. “
Maverik has won the award eight years in a row. Manager Candi DeCinko said the gas station is more than just a place people clock in to work at or customers visit, it has become a home and a family to many. The station’s staff turned out for the awards show, including Vanessa Flores, Lucy Luckett and Kevin Majeska, to offer their support. “It really puts joy that I am taking care of my customers,” DeCinko said. The station recently rolled out a new customer loyalty card that offers a 6-cent discount per each gallon of gas.

Best Grocery Store
Fletcher’s Tire & Auto Fletcher’s has won the “best of” award repeatedly. The manager credits customer service and notes that business remains strong, in part because in the downturn people are holding onto their older cars. Fletcher’s gets about 650 customers a month. RUNNERS-UP: Coyote Auto, Truck & RV Miller Auto Works
Best Antique Shop Granny’s Attic Winning the Best of Award is nothing new to Granny’s Attic owner Jan Curtiss. The store takes the win nearly every year, but the win still “means everything.” “It means the people in Payson support me and my dealers,” said Curtiss, who has owned the store for more than 12 years. “We have a variety, over 30 dealers and consignors in the store.” RUNNERS-UP: Bootleg Alley, Carpenter’s Wife
Best Insurance Agency Crabdree Insurance & Financial Services “Treat people the way you want to be treated.” That is the motto Crabdree Insurance owner Scott Crabdree and his staff live by. “We treat our customers as clients, friends, we know them by name and we take time to talk to them and not just about businesses,” he said. With multiple Best of wins, Crabdree said it feels great to know people appreciate his staff.
Safeway Safeway Manager Dan Dillon said “the key is the people that work in the store.” The supermarket has 38,000 square feet and has operated since 1994. “Business has been good this year,” said Dillon. RUNNERS-UP: Bashas’ Food & Drug Walmart Supercenter

When asked the secret to his nearly continuous Best of wins, owner Kevin Dick jokes it is a top secret. He will say his team plays a major role in their success. “We care, we actually care,” he said. “This is a testimony to our team and the effort that we put in and it is nice to have that reciprocated.”
Walgreens Pharmacy Manager Cliff Wilembrecht said, “We lost a tough contract last year. But the people in the pharmacy have kept up the service.” The pharmacy has eight employees who fill 11,000 prescriptions monthly. “Business is holding steady,” said Wilembrecht. RUNNERS-UP: Payson Apothecary Walmart Supercenter
RUNNERS-UP: Chris Smith Investments, Edward Jones Investments
Best Florist Payson Florist & Gift Shop Although Payson Florist is well known in town and a frequent Best of winner, this year’s win was especially sweet. Rita Jorgenson and her daughter Kali Jorgenson bought the shop in May from longtime owner Marilyn Dedman and made several changes. They lowered prices and brought in more flowerbased products. Kali was so surprised by the win she could barely hold still long enough to get her picture taken. “I am shaking. I really did not think we were going to win,” she said. “I really thought Safeway was going to win.” RUNNERS-UP: Bashas’ Food & Drug Safeway Food & Drug
Best Bank Institution
Chase Manager Andy Strader said, “I have amazing employees — and customers.” The bank has operated for 40 years in Payson — previously as Valley National Bank and Bank One — and has about 5,000 customers. “This award means a lot. It’s about caring. We care about every single person that comes into that bank. I came from a big bank in Phoenix. It’s wonderful here. Best move I ever made.” RUNNERS-UP: National Bank of Arizona, Well Fargo Bank

Charlie’s Old Fashion Sausages & Fresh Meats
Club USA manager and trainer Karis Zimmerman said the club has 400 members, up by 25 percent from just a few years ago. The key trend lies in doctors prescribing exercise — and many more insurance companies covering the cost, she said.
Charlie Adcock opened Charlie's Old Fashioned Sausages and Fresh Meats, at 405 S. Beeline, Suite A, 15 years ago and has won the Best of award nearly every year since. “We offer good service, good quality and at a fair price and that is about the best way I say it right there,” he said. Charlie sells 35 different types of sausage, all made in-house. While the last four years have been tough on the business, he says he survives on his reputation.

Best Bar and Best Hamburger
Best Sandwich and Best Salad
Cedar Ridge Restaurant When executive Chef Rick DePhilippis put the hearty steak sandwich on the Cedar Ridge menu 16 years ago, he had no idea it would win the Best Sandwich award nearly every year or be the restaurant’s top seller. The sandwich consists of a half-pound rib eye between two slices of Texas toast. “Steak rules,” he said. The restaurant also received the most votes for Best Salad.
Buffalo Bar & Grill The Buffalo has dominated this category for years, thanks to live music, a variety of beer and drinks, employees that seem to know everyone’s names and a friendly, relaxed feel — not to mention a varied menu. The owners of the Buffalo made repeated trips to the front of the room to pick up awards — including best hamburger. You should also try the Pulled Pork and Chicken Philly sandwiches on the lunch special.
SANDWICH RUNNERS-UP: Buffalo Bar and Grill (Sirloin Steak Melt) and Macky’s Grill (Cowboy Melt) SALAD RUNNERS-UP: Cardo’s Pizza & Italian Restaurant and Chili’s Grill & Bar
BAR RUNNERS-UP: Apache Spirits and OxBow Saloon HAMBURGER RUNNERS-UP: Chili’s Grill & Bar and Macky’s Grill
Best Mexican Food Restaurant and Best Margarita
El Rancho Restaurant Heather Watson general manager and server Jamie McNeeley say the key to any good margarita is making it from scratch. El Rancho makes all eight of its margarita varieties in house and to order. The same goes for the food. “We try to keep the menu current and we have the best quality ingredients,” they said.
Best Steak Dinner
Diamond Point Shadows Manager Jennifer Blanchard says that the steak house has operated for 50 years. The 13 employees handle 100 customers a night on the weekends. RUNNERS-UP: Cedar Ridge Restaurant and Fargo’s Steak House
RUNNERS-UP: Alfonso’s, La Sierra and Chili’s Grill & Bar

Dr. Chuck Williams has practiced for 17 years in Payson and sees about 25 patients daily. The key to success lies in “Doing a good job and caring about people — and not charging a lot. It’s improving, hallelujah. I think I’m in Payson forever now. I could move, but I don’t know where I’d ever move to.”
Best Beautician
Third-year winner Lisa Taylor of Taylor Accounting and Tax says she tries to keep all of her clients happy. “I am very honored and humble,” she said.
Shannon James of From Head to Toe Essentials has worked in Payson for 20 years. “We just keep building business,” she said. Her salon now has about 12 employees who serve 120 customers daily. The key to surviving the downturn? “Working hard and advertising gimmicks — like Ladies Night, when people can sample any service we offer for $10. Business is excellent and we’re expanding.”
Best Nail Tech Robin Weaver She’s a Payson native who has been doing nails for 20 years, currently at Polish Plus. She says the key to surviving tough times is, “Just being really good. I love Payson. My little piece of heaven. RUNNERSUP: Jan Andrus (Toes in the Sand) and Vivian Nguyen (Paradise Nails)
Best Realtor
Best Firefighter
Paul Bates
Bob Lockhart
Paul Bates said “I am shocked. I didn’t even vote. It’s just wonderful. I am astounded. It’s a great honor.” Paul has spent 18 years selling homes in Rim Country. His business peaked at maybe $13 million annually during the boom, dropped to about $4 million in the slump and has climbed back up to about $6 million. He estimates about half the Realtors in Rim Country have gone out of business in the past four years. The key to surviving? “Darn hard work — and making sure I always put the customer first.”
Payson Fire Marshal Bob Lockhart said no one was more surprised than he when he landed the award. “Who would have thought?” he said. Lockhart said the other firefighters must have “coddled back their performance to make me look better.”

“I appreciate the public’s support,” said Sgt. Donny Garvin of the Payson Police Department. “I had some good competition. It probably says that I know the community in several ways besides law enforcement. I don’t think I do a better job than the other officers.”
Paty Henderson has won best Star Valley Councilor three years in a row. She said she concentrates on reaching across town boundaries to work on mutual problems. “It is an old ranching tradition, you help your neighbors, you work with them,” she said.

Congratulations to all the “Best of Rim Country” winners! Sal Mercado Su Connell Su Connell is the only woman on the Payson Town Council and she doesn’t feel bad beating out her male counterparts for councilor of the year. “I am the only thorn amongst six roses,” she said. “And I work hard to make it happen. But the best in my mind in Rim Country are all the people and the businesses that have hung in there and they all deserve awards.” RUNNERS-UP: Ed Blair and John Wilson
It would not be a Best of Award ceremony without Sal Mercado winning Best Bartender. The well known multi-year winner said the award is great job security. But he probably doesn’t need it because he considers the bar’s owners family. “They have taken me in as family and made it into a family restaurant,” he said. “It is a super fun, super crazy job. It is a good time and I like being on the side that I am of the bar.” RUNNERS-UP: Angela Hill (Apache Spirits) and Tara Fuller-Smith (Apache Spirits)
