Best Business – Safeway A great team offering great customer service is the key to Safeway’s success in the grocery business in Rim Country, according to Payson store director Dan Dillon. Safeway recently merged with Albertson’s, but

the Payson store will remain known as Safeway and customers can continue to count on the same great customer service, Dillon said. “We’re going to be the same great grocery store we’ve always been and we’re moving on to be even

better. Both companies have always believed in being the best hometown grocer, with great customer service, getting involved in the community, taking care of the kids in the community by being involved in the schools and donating money, time

Ray Pugel, owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Bishop Realty, remains one of the region’s business leaders, with years of community service to his credit. He has pioneered creative marketing techniques in a real estate business buffeted by change and donated many hours to community groups and causes. He also owns Bishop Self Storage in Pine.

“I got this award because of the people who work with me,” said Safeway store director Dan Dillon. The Milwaukee, Wis. native has been in his position with the store for 14 of his 38 years in retail food sales. Safeway recently merged with Albertson’s, and Dillon says patrons can count on receiving the same great customer service.

and products to the schools, and taking care of our customers,” Dillon said. In addition to Best Business, Safeway also took home top honors in the Best Grocery Store and Best Customer Service Categories.

Best thing about the Best of the Rim I think my favorite moment at the Best of the Rim ceremonies came when the owners of the Buffalo, Macky’s and Diamond Point Shadows insisted on a group shot (photo at right) — each proud owner smiling from the assorted recognition they’d just received from the 1,700 people who voted in this year’s Best of the Rim awards. The Roundup readers who voted cast about 90,000 ballots, which poor Pia Wyer and Paula Van Buskirk laboriously hand-counted in the run-up to the awards ceremonies, which drew about 400 people eager to celebrate the wonderful businesses and people that make Rim Country such a great place to live. The ceremonies turned into a chance for everyone to catch up on gossip and congratulate their friends and neighbors. Granted, the recognition can boost business. So technically, all restaurant owners could compete BEST BUSINESS Safeway

fiercely, elbowing to survive the downturn in a town still heavily dependent on the tourist trade. But instead, we’re all in this together. The folks who came to the front to collect the awards have been working together all year, raising money for the schools, helping stage chamber of commerce events, wondering nervously when the university will come, the economy will turn, the building boom will resume, the town will loosen up on the paperwork. We’re all survivors and supporters, whose kids take classes together and whose families shop down the street. So we offer this special edition to celebrate the winners, the runners-up, the customers and the spirit of a community that won’t quit — and where business owners aren’t competitors — they’re neighbors.

DOWN THE STREET ART GALLERY

This is the fourth win for Down the Street Art Gallery, a gallery that currently features works from 17 local artists. New for the gallery last year was the addition of a colorful elk sculpture out front at 703 W. Main St. Some 20 artists helped paint the elk and staff hope people will stop and take their picture with the elk when they come to Payson. Pictured are Carol Kane, April Bower, Minette Richardson, Donn Morris, Conrad Okerwall and Bob Gleason.

Doug Kreie (left) attributes his Best Of win to helping his customers figure out how to fix it themselves, customer service and unique services. “We do a lot of screening and Stihl chain saw repairs,” he said. Since many Rim Country residents enjoy cutting up their own wood, keeping their saws in top-notch shape is critical. Rena Lenhar (right) said the Stove Shop also adds value to their hardware store. “We fill in the gaps and do what needs to be done,” she said. Ace is located at 507 N Beeline Highway.

Melissa and Robert Higginbotham attribute their many years of winning Best Of awards to customer service, even if that means fixing something that isn’t jewelry. “We take care of them,” said Melissa. “We’re willing to work on anything. We did a saxophone repair and eyeglasses,” she said. What they love most about working in Payson? “The personal service — we know everybody,” said Robert. Payson Jewelers is located at 240 E. CLUB USA HEALTH & FITNESS

The reason Club USA has won this award the last three years is because “We offer a friendly and clean environment to improve your health and fitness, with a variety of fun classes,” said club manager Nannette Whiting. “We offer a lot of classes: Zumba, all kinds of yoga, high intensity interval training (HIIT), fitness plus, and senior programs like silver sneakers and silver and fit. We also offer state-of-the-art tanning — and we have Precor and Cybex cardio and circuit machines.” The club, located at 113 W. CHASE BANK

Manager Andrew Strader, Brent Whetstone, Lisa Smith, Tim Tatman, Glen Miller, and Jessica Morris accepted the award for Chase Bank. Strader says he believes the bank’s practice of assigning personal bankers to customers sets his bank apart from others. “In my experience, I have a real opportunity to know each of my customers,” said Strader. He and his staff also work hard to find solutions for customers in the midst of hard times. Many times, Chase’s new innovations, such as the ability to email money to children, helps provide better service. “We put the customers first in everything we do every day,” said Strader. Chase is located at 201 S. Beeline Highway.

After 30 years in business, owner Terry Ford says she still offers the same great service that she did when she first opened. GRANNY’S ATTIC

Petra Luh, Terry Lowman and Randi Sanders collected the award for best antique shop. Luh recently bought the shop and has already made many changes. The shop gets about 50 customers a day. Luh says she’s focusing more on local buyers, with added activities, features and a major renovation. Luh is turning the half-acre lot in back of the store into what she calls a “resort-style gathering place.” Granny’s Attic will start offering classes for pottery, china, painting, papermaking and welding, as well as a coffee bar and a smoke shop, to provide interesting lunch options. The shop, located at 800 E. Highway 260, will remain open much longer in the evening so that locals who work can come afterward and shop.

CRABDREE INSURANCE & FINANCIAL SERVICES, INC.

After 46 years in business in Payson, Crabdree Insurance knows a thing or two about customer service. Tina Crabdree says the key to their success is simple: “We try really hard.” The firm’s business is roughly 60 percent personal insurance and 40 percent commercial. With the Affordable Care Act, Crabdree has been helping businesses navigate the new regulations. Pictured are Karen Crabtree, Kathryn Cradree, Tina Crabdree and Alita Fogarty. Crabdree is located at 431 S. Beeline Highway.

Best Paint Store

Jason Crary attributes Fletcher’s 11 Best Of wins to giving the best auto service at the best price, but also said, “We’re an honest repair shop.” He said the amount of business has remained the same from last year to this year, with maybe a little bit of an increase. When asked what’s one thing that’s different from running an auto repair shop in Rim Country versus the Phoenix? “We don’t have emission requirements up here,” he said. Fletcher’s is located at 104 W. Airport Rd.

THE HOME DEPOT

“Our motto is we want to be the No. 1 retail store in the world in customer service,” says Payson Home Depot flooring supervisor Gloria Hamelin. “They can match any color; they have a really good eye for color,” said merchandising supervisor John Lacey of the paint department pros. The store’s gross sales increased in the past year, but they’re continuing to try and give customers what they want by expanding their garden center this year. “We want it to be more like a farmers market,” Hamelin said. “We’re trying for more color, more selection.” Visit The Home Depot at 2000 N. Beeline Highway.

MAVERIK COUNTRY STORE AND GAS STATION

Great customer service is the key to Maverik winning this award in each of its 10 years in operation at 715 N. Beeline Highway. “We treat our customers like family,” said store director Paul Smith. “We do a lot of communicating with our customers. And our gas is always going to be all American gas.” Customers get a 2-cent discount on every gallon with a free Maverik Rewards Card. PETSMART

PetSmart has quickly gotten the attention of pet owners in Rim Country, winning this award for the first time since opening in March of 2013 at 400 E. Highway 260 in the Rim Country Mall. “People are finally realizing we’re here,” said store manager Mariah Lantz. “We’re probably doing twice the business we were the first year.” In addition to pet food and supplies, the store also offers grooming. PetSmart has donated to the Humane Society of Central Arizona, as well as helping with adoptions, and has donated to Payson’s Off-Leash Dog Park. Pictured are groomers Lacey Sockrider and Asia Bishop, store assistant manager Shea Stribling and store manager Mariah Lantz.

From starting out in his garage, to having a prominent bright red-colored storefront, Daniel Taft has run The Computer Guys business for 10 years. He attributes creative solutions to computer problems as the reason he won the Best Of this year. “We do maintenance contract and services for $24.95, so you don’t have to pay $200 every time,” he said. Taft said most PCs catch some sort of virus once a month. By his team checking on client’s computers on a regular basis, The Computer Guys catch problems early and avoid the big bills. Another benefit, The Computer Guys, located at 300 Highway 260, can fix a computer from a remote location so clients don’t need to bring in their computer. “I fixed somebody’s computer in China,” said Taft.

In the past year, Payson Care Center, at 107 E. Lone Pine Drive, has added a 900-square-foot physical therapy gym, updated the rooms and given the whole facility a fresh coat of paint. Jason “Norm” Norman says they have also gone from 14 private suites to 30. This year, they plan to continue refreshing the space with new carpet and tile. Diane Williams said they care for patients like they were their own family members. “Any of us would put our own parents in the facility,” she said. FOOD and DRINK Best Breakfast Restaurant MISS FITZ 260 CAFE Miss Fitz 260 Cafe, at 803 E. Highway 260, is a family run affair with Diane Fitzpatrick and her children, Tracy Fitzpatrick and Jeremy Prest, all owning a portion of the business. Famous for their homecooked meals, including meatloaf and adult grilled cheese, the café is expanding its hours in mid-March. Instead of closing at 3 p.m., the café will stay open until 9 p.m. Tracy said chefs Jeremy Prest and Josh Gonzalez, both with experience working at fine dining restaurants, wanted a challenge and a place to showcase their skills. They plan to add fish and steak dishes. Pictured are Tracy Fitzpatrick, Amber Buchea, Jeremy Prest, Joshua Gonzalez, Diane Fitzpatrick and June and Buddy Whitman. Photo by Jeannie Smith Herford

Best Lunch Restaurant Best Family Restaurant Best Hamburger MACKY’S Pictured are: Cari and Greg Day, owners of Macky’s Grill, located at 201 W. Main St.; Kristy Ulmer, waitress; and Robin Nelson, waitress. Greg Day says there are a few reasons he believes his restaurant won in three Best of the Rim categories: “Our service, our quality, our cleanliness and our patio,” he said. Longtime waitresses Nelson and Ulmer had other reasons for loving the restaurant. “I just hit my eight-year mark,” said Nelson, “I love the restaurant because of my

coworkers.” Kristy says the reason she has stayed for 15 years are the owners. But Cari Day had the best answer of all. “We love to spoil our customers — all the way down to the dogs,” she said. The group also attributed their commitment to keeping good, solid offerings on the menu. “Thirteen years ago, people would come in and say, ‘That was really good,’ now they come in and say ‘That’s good as always,’” said Cari.

PIZZA FACTORY

FARGO’S STEAK HOUSE

This is the fourth win for Pizza Factory, said Dallas Walker and Logen Conway. By summer, guests can expect to find a remodeled Payson Pizza Factory at 238 E. Highway 260 and a new menu, including a Greek salad.

Fargo’s, located at 620 E. Highway 260, offers a variety of food, with a medium-rare ribeye steak the most popular item on the menu. In addition to great food, a great staff is also key to the restaurant’s popularity. Pictured are bartender Yolanda Perez and her sister, Perla, who is a server and a bartender. They say it’s easy to work for owners, Rick and Jeri Stockman. “Good owners make a big difference. They treat us like family.”

DIAMOND POINT SHADOWS

BUFFALO BAR & GRILL

For Diamond Point Shadows’ chef Tyler Perna, quality is key. His grandfather built the restaurant at 6322 E. Highway 260 in the 1960s and it has been a part of the family ever since. The restaurant is famous for its steaks and seafood, including massive blue point shrimp and Friday night fish fry, which features a deep fried Alaskan cod, which Perna makes onsite.

The Buffalo Bar and Grill, located at 311 S. Beeline Highway, is coming out with a new menu in March. Owner Mike McCannon says they are adding lighter food options, including salads and shaved turkey sandwiches. Guests will still find the bar’s top sellers on the menu, including its top sirloin burger and veggie burger with wasabi on a pretzel roll. McCannon is also thinking about adding a prime rib special. McCannon has owned the bar for 9.5 years and says you can still find Junction 87 playing there every Sunday, like they have for the last 13 years.

Melina Chambers has worked at Wendy’s for three years and just had the honor of a promotion to manager. She credits “Everything from the food to the customers to the employees,” for their Best of the Rim honors. PEOPLE Best Band JUNCTION 87

Jim Norman, Bob Lewis, Billy Ichida The trio who make up Junction 87 said they give their great following and their chemistry kudos for their Best of the Rim win. “You couldn’t do this if we didn’t get along so well,” they said. Although the band has only coalesced into this trio in the past 10 years, Junction 87 has entertained two-steppers at the Buffalo Bar and Grill for the past 13 years. The band attributes their commitment to traditional country to their committed fan base. “We like the classics,” said Norman. “Since the late ’80s and ’90s, I quit learning the new country.” “I heard a lot of comments they like to see us having fun up on the stage,” said Ichida. The band is more than willing to share the stage with local talent, too. Often a harmonica player, guitar players or singers will pop up on the stage to perform with the guys. It’s always a surprise how many show up. “You never know, sometimes you have 11 of us, but we three guys are the core,” said Lewis. Photo by DJ Craig

Best Law Enforcement Officer

Best Firefighter CAPT. TOBY WAUGH

Payson Fire Department Capt. Toby Waugh has taken home the best firefighter honor five times. Fellow firefighters say Waugh goes above and beyond the call of duty and offers exceptional customer service on every call. Waugh has served as a firefighter for 30 years and fell into the field after working the meat counter at Bashas’. A week after moving to Payson, firefighter Rudy Allison encouraged Waugh to volunteer for the fire department and the rest is history.

DONNY GARVIN

Payson Police Department It’s very simple why Donny Garvin keeps winning this award on a regular basis. “I deal with really good people sometimes at their worst moments and I try to treat them with dignity and respect,” he said. The 1987 Payson High graduate was a member of the second graduating class of the Payson Law Enforcement Academy and has been with the Payson Police Department since 1993. Best Barber JUAN JIMENEZ

JJ’s Barber Shop Jimenez brought co-barbers Hal Wellington and John Schwarc to the event, but the trio uncharacteristically lacked loquaciousness. When asked why they thought Jimenez won, Wellington said, “He takes his time and customer service.” The group has seen more customers over the past year, but that doesn’t stop them from knowing each one. In fact, that, along with Payson being a small town, makes working in Rim Country a pleasure. “There’s more of a hometown atmosphere,” said Wellington. “We know our customers better,” said Schwarc. The shop is located at 307 S. Beeline Highway. Photo by Jeannie Smith Herford

Best Dentist ERIC ANDERSON

Anderson Dental Group Dr. Eric Anderson, pictured with Ana Wilson and Shellie Stringer, said, “I have a great staff,” when asked why he thought his office won the Best of the Rim award. His staff thought the way they treat patients like family made the most difference. “And many have become like family,” said Wilson. It doesn’t hurt that they love working in a small town. “I think it’s more personal,” said Anderson. “You become part of the community.” Anderson’s staff said another reason patients appreciate the office — they aren’t afraid of upgrading. Their newest piece of equipment, a CAT scan, allows the doctor to be more accurate with implants. “We can see exactly how much bone to work with,” said Anderson. Anderson’s office is located at 712 N. Beeline Highway.

ROBIN WEAVER

Polish Plus This is the third win for Robin Weaver as best nail technician. Weaver is the co-owner of Polish Plus, a small salon tucked on the bottom floor of a shopping center at 107 W. Wade Lane, behind Alfonso’s Mexican Food. Weaver said her Aunt Dolly taught her how to do nails when she was 15 and she has been hooked on the field ever since. Her specialty is gel nails and spa pedicures.

Colorz Salon Keeping up with the latest trends has helped Juliedon Petersen of Colorz Salon win the Best Beautician award four times, including the last three years. “I specialize in color and haircuts, but I do it all,” she said. The 22-year veteran said among the more popular color and highlight trends are the ombre, which features darker roots through the mid-shaft then a gradual lightening of the shade to the ends, and the colors purple and blue. Colorz is located at 600 E. Highway 260.

Native Grill & Wings and Buffalo Bar “I fell into it, then I fell in love with it,” says Sal Mercado of bartending. And Rim Country residents are the beneficiaries of that love as he moved to Payson from California eight years ago and has been voted Best Bartender for about the last six years. “It’s not about the drinks or the place, it’s about the people that live in this town,” he said. “The community of Payson is amazing.” Mercado works at the Buffalo on Sunday nights and during the day on Tuesday and has been behind the bar at Native Grill & Wings every Friday-Monday since it opened last August. He also works periodically at Kohl’s Ranch. He says beer is definitely the most popular beverage, followed by a variety of “lady party cocktails.” He says, “I like whiskey drinks, so when somebody tells me they want to try something new, I give them a variety of whiskey drinks.”

My Chiropractor Chuck Williams didn’t set out to be a chiropractor. He went to school to be a forest ranger, but when that didn’t work out, set out to find a career that utilized his biology background and allowed him to help people. He settled on chiropractics. For the last three years, Williams has won best chiropractor. Williams says he is consistent, caring and affordable. Pictured with Williams is Donna Lyn.

Bossart reflected the same thoughts, but added her experience in the industry. “I worked at another financial institution and it’s his reputation of having a strong relationship with his team and his relationship with his clients,” she said. The business has grown since last year, said the staff. “We pride ourselves on customer relations,” said Crabdree. “It’s all about the relationship.

Watson said customers enjoy coming to El Rancho because the owners aren’t afraid of trying new menu items and removing those that just don’t work. Her favorite? The shrimp tacos.

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE STATE PARK

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park board member Su Connell enjoys the park so much she got married there. The park, which features the world’s largest travertine arch, was in danger of being closed three years ago, but the community and Friends of Tonto Natural Bridge saved it by holding fund-raisers and working with the park staff to make it more attractive. “There’s something for everybody and for all ages to enjoy at TNB,” Connell said. The park is open from dawn until dusk 365 days a year and is available to host special events.
