128th rodeo to celebrate Arizona’s centennial BY TERESA MCQUERREY ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
Payson’s World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo at 128 is older than Arizona statehood and as such is naturally an official part of the state’s centennial celebration — sanctioned by the Arizona Centennial Committee. Appropriate to commemorating such an important milestone, the rodeo festivities will feature the U.S. Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard, the only remaining Mounted Color Guard in the Marine Corps, and Official State Historian Marshall Trimble. More than 150 professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls will compete in the four performances, which are scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18; and 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19. The USMC Mounted Color Guard will lead the annual Rodeo Parade, which will be held starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18 and have Trimble as its grand marshal. More than 40 entries will participate in the parade including rodeo royalty, the Payson High School marching band and several units from the El Zaribah Shrine organization of Phoenix. The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis of Zane Grey Country are sponsoring the parade this year, which will run from Green Valley Park east on Historic Main Street to the Sawmill Crossing. Women will take the lead in actually opening the 128th annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo with contests in the Payson Event Center arena Thursday, Aug. 16. Part of the Cactus Women’s Professional Rodeo barrel racing series, the event will include not only barrel racing, but breakaway roping and team roping. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Master storyteller will be parade’s Grand Marshal BY PETE ALESHIRE ROUNDUP EDITOR
The state’s oldest continuous rodeo. And the soft-strumming, wise cracking, character-loving storyteller who can surely lay claim to the title of the state’s oldest, continuous historian. A match made in heaven? No doubt — which could explain why the organizers of the Payson Rodeo cajoled Marshall Trimble into serving as the Grand Marshal for the Rodeo Parade. Designated Arizona’s official historian in 1995, Trimble had by then already spent a quarter century as a singer, storyteller and historian — digging out and polishing the strange and whimsical stories of pioneers, outlaws, fools, dreamers and outlandish characters, drawn to the chaos and romance of the frontier. Lean, weathered and unexpectedly graceful as a slumped, split-rail fence, Trimble has played a leading role in the state’s year-long celebration of its 100th birthday, which includes his droll and fascinating historical vignettes that have been running on KMOG and many other radio stations throughout

He cut a couple of records with a group called the Gin Mill Three, but drifted back to ranching in Montana when the band’s manager ran off with all the royalties. A visit to the site of Custer’s Last Stand awoke the historian and storyteller in him, which ultimately led him into teaching history. He started writing breezy, whimsical, deeply researched books that skittered along the edge between outsized facts and downright myths. The books led him onto the lecture circuit, where he has charmed, informed and inspired people ever since. Each year he makes appearances in dozens of schools around the state, reciting his acclaimed cowboy poetry, playing old songs and telling stories about Arizona’s outlandish pioneering personalities, many of whose lives remained far stranger than fiction. 128TH WORLD’S OLDEST CONTINUOUS RODEO
USMC Mounted Color Guard will lead parade BY TERESA MCQUERREY ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
The inspiring U.S. Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard is making a return visit to Payson for the 2012 World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo. The USMC Mounted Color Guard — the only remaining Mounted Color Guard in the Marine Corps — will lead the Rodeo Parade Saturday morning. Lt. Colonel Robert Lindsley, U.S. Marine Corps retired, formed the USMC Mounted Color Guard at the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Barstow, Calif. in 1967, according to information on the Bureau of Land Management Web site. Lindsley purchased four palomino domestic horses from St. George, Utah and the fifth palomino was purchased in the Barstow area. The first parade the USMC Mounted Color Guard attended was in Ridgecrest, Calif. in 1967. In 1968, the Color Guard was designated an official Mounted Color Guard by the Headquarters Marine Corps. The USMC first adopted a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wild horse in 1988 for the Mounted Color Guard
— a two-year-old horse called “Okinawa” — reflecting the naming history of all the horses used. According to an article by Rod Powers, on The New York Times company Web site, About.com, the original horses were named after some of the most famous battles in the Corps’ history: they were Montezuma, Tripoli, Soissons, Surabachi and Iwo Jima. In January 1985, the Mounted Color Guard made its first appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., and has been given the extreme honor of the first military unit to lead the parade. Since 1990, the Mounted Color Guard has participated in every Tournament of Roses Parade. Today, the five members of the USMC Mounted Color Guard ride wild palomino mustangs adopted from the BLM’s Adopt a Wild Horse and Burro Program. Gunnery Sgt. diversified the unit. “When I came here, the Mounted Color Guard was for infantrymen who were to go on cool down tours after their deployments,” he explained. “I wanted to bring Marines from a broader spectrum.”
Now the Mounted Color Guard has Marines that worked in corrections, communications and music, along with an infantryman. He also urged outstanding Marines stationed at MCLB Barstow to take up reins as well.

128TH WORLD’S OLDEST CONTINUOUS RODEO
James among rodeo’s finest Hometown favorite is annually one of the top money winners in AWPRA BY MAX FOSTER ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
A competitive spirit coupled with a passion for adventure and a deep respect for life on a working ranch has helped Teri James become one of the most successful rodeo competitors in Arizona. James, who grew up in Chandler and now lives with her husband, Clint, and two children on the Earnhardt Ranch at Little Green Valley, has been competing on the rodeo circuit since she was 8years-of-age. “First it was junior rodeo, then high school and on to college,” said James. “I’ve been doing it all my life.” In 1980, James joined the Arizona Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and although she competes only part of the season, she has annually been one of the top money winners on the circuit. She is currently ranked
fourth in the 2012 AWPRA card standings. In the 2012 Women’s Professional Rodeo Association Turquoise Circuit, James is ranked 12th among barrel racers, is sitting fourth among headers in team roping and in breakaway roping is second. At a WPRA rodeo in Globe, James once won the breakaway in the incredibly fast time of 2.6 seconds. For James, the busiest portion of the rodeo season is the summer when she’s on the road traveling from competition to competition. Just prior to returning to the Little Green Valley ranch last week to prep for the Payson rodeo, James was in Colorado competing at Loveland, Yuma, Sterling, Lamar and also Lovington, New Mexico. Her rodeo event of choice is barrel racing but she’s also skilled enough in the roping events often teaming with her daughter, Jessi, in the team roping. Teri is traditionally the header and her daughter the heeler. For the Payson rodeo, James says she will ride her 13-year-old quarter horse Preacher, who she has ridden for about two years. “He’s extremely fast or at least, I think he is,” she said. In the Payson rodeo, James anticipates it will take a barrel race time of slightly over 17 seconds to be a money winner. That sort of time should be attainable for James — at an AWPRA finals event in Phoenix she turned in a 17.59 and has equaled or bettered that ET several times over the years. As a rodeo competitor, James lives in an almost ideal ranch location to practice her profession. The Earnhardt Ranch has a roping arena where she and the other family members can hone their skills in barrel racing and the roping events including breakaway. While James is among the most accomplished competitors in rodeo, she’s not the only family member “First it was junior who shines in the arena. Clint is an accomplished calf rodeo, then high and team roper and also the school and on to director of the Arizona college. I’ve been Junior Rodeo Association. doing it all my He, however, has been sidelined for a few months life.” from an injury incurred Teri James while doing a stunt for a teleWomen’s rodeo veteran vision reality program. Jessi competes on the Arizona High School Rodeo Association circuit and in 2009 finished second in the breakaway roping at the state championships. James’ son, 12-year-old Monty, recently shrugged off a serious ATV accident to win the ribbon roping and breakaway calf roping titles at the 2012 Arizona Junior High School Rodeo Championships in Prescott. He was also named the team roping reserve champion. While Teri James leads a demanding life as a mother, wife, rodeo competitor and ranch hand, she often has found time to share her love of the equestrian lifestyle with others. A few years ago, Charlene Hunt-Brown — then a town recreation specialist charged with running the Payson Event Center — asked James and her husband to host team roping and breakaway roping clinics at PEC. The husband and wife agreed and the series of four clinics turned highly successful attracting overflow classes of aspiring ropers from 10- to 50-yearsplus. “They were fun,” said James. The inaugural event was so successful that HuntBrown followed it up a year later with an even more intensive clinic that featured Teri James teaching the skills of breakaway roping to young girls. “Teri and Clint were very patient even with the most inexperienced ropers,” said Hunt-Brown. “They never made anyone feel inadequate.” With the Payson rodeo about to kick off, James will soon ride into the PEC clutching what is known in basketball as the “home court advantage” and buoyed by hometown fans who acknowledge her as a Payson favorite and one of the sport’s finest.

The bronc rider’s dance is classic rodeo event Local Jason Amon to ride in the Payson Rodeo BY MICHELE NELSON ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
You can hear it in his voice — Jason Amon’s love of the ride. “Our event is all about timing and precision — the horse will shoot straight up to the sky while your upper body stays straight and you kick your legs out,” he said of a great performance, “It’s all how the horse bucks.” Yet it’s all over in eight seconds. “Once a judge sees you’ve held on for eight seconds, he puts his head down and starts scoring,” said Amon. Amon comes from the local Payson family that runs construction company Amon Builders Inc. The company will soon wrap up on the gym at the high school and start on the Payson Water District building next. Earlier this year, the business built the new Humane Society digs. Amon works as the foreman on the gym to stay near his son as he raises him alone, but his heart lies with the rodeo. “I’m the only one in my family that
rides,” he said. He started riding by the time he turned four and hopes to get his son up on a horse by the time he’s the same age — he is only two now. “I’m training a little horse for him,” he said, “I’ll have him up on the horse by the time he’s three or four.” Amon has been off the rodeo circuit for the last two years to raise his son, but he looks forward to returning to the rodeo life when his son is old enough. Before Amon became a father, he used to wander the rodeo circuit riding broncs. “You can plan your whole life around the rodeo circuit,” said Amon. Amon’s favorite place for rodeo: Cheyenne, Wyo. He said during the weeklong event he could hit up to six other rodeos close to the city. Amon said the rodeo world is a tight-knit community. After coming home from the circuit, he said everyone he talked to lived in states far away. Payson Roundup sports reporter Max Foster, his former football coach and math teacher, remembers watching Amon outside the old Payson High School agricultural building riding a

bronc with just a rope around its neck. “He loves to ride,” said Foster. A good ride has a lot to do with the horse, said Amon. “They can twist if you’re guessing their gonna go one way and then juke you,” said Amon, using a football term he learned while playing with Foster. A juke maneuver basically means a feint or fake move. With broncs, Amon said the horse will move one way and as soon as you prepare for that move, it will reverse itself — many times tossing the rider in the process. Bronc riding, often called the classic rodeo event, evolved from cowboys breaking and training horses to work cattle. Judges watch for a couple of things that can disqualify the rider. The first, the rider must have both of his heels touching his ride above the point of its shoulders when the horse makes its first jump out of the shoot. The second thing a rider must make sure he does — never touch his free hand to either the horse or his body. A bit of a challenge since the bronc rider only has a thick rein attached to a halter.

Rodeo veterinarian: stock are ‘professional athletes’ BY MICHELE NELSON ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
Large animal veterinarian Dr. Drew Justice loves the broncos. “I love horses,” he said, “A bronco ride flows well... some can lift up to five feet with each kick.” Rodeo goers will see Justice down by the chutes during every performance. The vet donates his time to the Payson Rodeo as a community service. He said every PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) rodeo requires a vet to be on hand to guarantee the well being of the animals performing. And he said they love to perform. “These animals are professional athletes.” He has observed that before the audience arrives, the animals will lay in their pens, quietly chomping on food, completely relaxed. But as soon as people start filling the stands, the music begins to play and the energy pumps, the animals start pacing. He said it feels as though they can’t wait to get out and be on stage. So it’s not surprising that stock providers raise the animals to do what they do — buck off riders.
Justice said a rodeo animal’s training starts for bulls when they are two years old and for broncos, when they are three. At that time, trainers put a light flank strap on and a 30-pound soft dummy to see if the animal will even respond. “From 40 to 50 percent of the animals refuse to even buck,” he said. Those animals never see the rodeo ring. Those that do like to buck go through as much training as a professional basketball player, said Justice. “Those that buck, they enjoy it,” said Justice. “There’s a misconception they do it because of the flank strap. They do it because they love it.” As the bulls and broncos train, they develop strategies — just as professional athletes do. “As people ride them, they learn the moves to get that person off,” he said. Like a good pitcher who knows that a batter can’t resist a high fast ball or the low curve ball, allowing them to fake out the batter, Justice said the animals will fake out a rider. “They mostly want to get the rider

off their backs quick so they can go back and eat,” said Justice. He often hears riders come up to the chutes and ask the stock breeder, “Hey, what does this bull do out of the chute?” “Two jumps and then a twist to the left,” is the response, so the riders know how to hedge their bets. “Bulls have patterns... they have this little repertoire,” said Justice. But then again, the animal can surprise them. And that’s the fun of it. “Amazing how bulls know how to rationalize it,” said Justice. A rider may not pick an animal to ride in a performance, it is randomly arranged. Justice said the PRCA has a computer generated matching system that picks riders and animals for a performance. “Bulls and horses only buck once a performance,” said Justice. As a result, they only have to be on once in a day. Justice said that professional rodeo animals work a total of 20 minutes in their lifetime. Of course that’s in eightsecond increments, said Justice.
Justice loves to watch the horses. He admits that the bulls have more athleticism, however. “A great bronco rider can sense a horse and modify their technique,” he said. The good ones almost do a dance with their horses, while others just get the job done. In a bronco or bull ride, both the rider and the animal get judged. A good animal will throw its body into the performance, bucking and twisting. A mediocre animal will just go through the motions, said Justice. Unless a person has watched a few rodeos, discerning a good ride does not come easy. That’s why the rodeo has judges, said Justice. The most points a rider and animal may receive is 100. Justice loves to work the rodeos, but he has suffered injury. “Sometimes the chute will swing open and smack you,” said Justice. Other times he has suffered bites and kicks. But he does not hold anything against the animals. “I love to watch the animals, they are like a professional athlete,” said Justice.

128TH WORLD’S OLDEST CONTINUOUS RODEO
The life of a bullfighter BY ALEXIS BECHMAN ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
Clifford Maxwell doesn’t run from danger, he signs up for it in fact. In his day job, Maxwell fights 3,000degree flames as a Show Low firefighter. For fun, he then puts on a clown suit and lets a 1,000-pound bull chase him around an arena. Maxwell, 44, is part of an elite, some might say crazy, group of cowboys who willingly put their necks on the line to save someone else. Throughout the Southwest, they enter rodeo arenas every summer and spring to turn down the heat on some of the most rowdy beasts around. Known as bullfighters or rodeo clowns, they pull a bull’s attention away long enough for bucked riders to run to safety and, with any luck, make the next rodeo. From the crowd, bullfighters can look like nothing more than glorified clowns. But there is more to their job than running around like crazy in hobo clothing. Most, like Maxwell, have gone to bullfighter school and take their task quite seriously. Maxwell trained in Walla Walla,
Wash. in 1994 and later the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association picked him to work the Turquoise Pro Rodeo Circuit. For Maxwell, it was the continuation of a rodeo dream almost cut short. After watching friends rodeo, Maxwell threw his hat in the ring. He took his first ride at a small rodeo in Taylor. He was terrible at bull riding. Could barely stay on. No bother, though, he was hooked. “Rodeo gets in your blood and it just stays there,” he said. “I loved it.” One terrible ride, however, nearly took him out for good. During practice, a bull bucked Maxwell off, but instead of flying free of the beast, he was hooked — a rider’s worst nightmare. The ride cost Maxwell five broken ribs, a punctured lung and a split spleen. His spleen would later be removed in surgery. Because it was a practice, there was no bullfighter around to save him. “I got injured pretty bad,” he admits. “My family asked me not to do it anymore.”

Bullfighters like Clifford Maxwell risk a lot to keep riders safe in the arena.
But Maxwell couldn’t walk away. So he traded in his chaps for baggy pants and a tuxedo shirt. The clothes are designed to tear away if a bull charges and its horn
snags. Underneath his outfit, Maxwell wears a few extra pads, including hip and chest protection, to lessen the weighty blows. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

At the 128th Annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo, all eyes will be glued on the action in the arena and ears tuned into the colorful commentary offered by announcers Rob Smets and Reed Flake. Flake has been at the Payson rodeo for years, but Smets is a relatively new addition to the team that keeps the audience informed about what they’re seeing in the arena. In fact, Smets is fairly new to announcing — he only took it up around 2006 when he decided to retire as a rodeo bullfighter after having his neck broken three times. Smets is California-born, but grew up around the world as his family followed his father to construction jobs in Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Puerto Rico. He was first introduced to rodeoing in Australia, but also did some boxing, even participating in Golden Gloves competitions. He was a junior in high school when he discovered the thrill of bullfighting. Smets’ career as a bullfighter earned him some outstanding accolades over the years, including being the only five-time World Champion Bullfighter. Among his

Mobile clinic on hand and ready to treat rodeo injuries Justin Sportsmedicine is on the spot for cowboys needing care BY TERESA MCQUERREY ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
Rodeo is not for wimps. But even the biggest, toughest, most burly cowboy is really no match for several hundred, cantankerous pounds of beef or horseflesh. And when those fire-breathing beasts get the better of the cowboys — or cowgirls — the World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo is one of only 100 or so to have the benefit of a Justin Sportsmedicine’s mobile clinic parked next to the arena. Rick Foster, program director for the Justin Sportsmedicine Team, said the Payson event is one of the smaller venues visited by the mobile clinics, but being the World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo has some prestige and there is a longtime connection between the Justin Boot Company and Rodeo Boss Bill Armstrong. The Justin Sportsmedicine
Team, a program fully-funded by the Justin Boot Company since 1981, provides free, comprehensive, on-site medical coverage to professional rodeo athletes. It has three mobile units (trailers and trucks), fully stocked with supplies and high-tech equipment to meet the needs of injured rodeo athletes. That equipment includes computer access to information about injuries a competitor may have sustained in another rodeo. The health care professionals staffing the units do everything for acute and chronic injuries. The staff includes program managers with certified athletic trainers and physical therapists — a total of eight staff members travel with each unit, Foster said. The care is provided with the help of local doctors such as Mark Ivey and Michael Darnell in Payson, and sometimes physician assistants. He said Justin Sportsmedicine also arranges for local transport for serious injuries and coordinates with paramedics and EMTs on site.

Bullfighter learned most of his rodeo ‘moves’ on the job FROM PAGE 20
Maxwell also wears bandannas. They not only distract the bull, they fall away so he isn’t hooked. The reason for the makeup? None really. Maxwell said he does it to honor tradition and the rodeo clowns who came before him. Maxwell said he learned most of his rodeo “moves” on the job. While school taught him what to look for when a bull exits the gate, reacting accordingly takes experience. Maxwell works closely with the other bullfighter in the ring. For Payson’s 2012 World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo, that will be Luke Kraut, a bullfighter with whom Maxwell has worked many rodeos. “There is a method to our madness,” he said. “Luke and I have fought together quite a bit so we know what each is going to do before we do it. Our main job is to keep the
bull distracted.” The men stand 180 degrees away from each other, straddling the bull from both sides. When a rider is ejected, they work quickly to distract the bull, often enticing it to charge at them. “We take our share of bumps,” he said. In March, Maxwell broke his leg at a Scottsdale rodeo when a bull threw him up in the air. The accident only strengthened his resolve to get back in the ring. “I was curious how I would react, but it hasn’t affected me,” he said. Maxwell normally works 20 rodeos a year. He takes it personally when a rider gets injured. “My job is to protect him,” he said. “We sacrifice our bodies so they can go on, but we try to protect ourselves too.” In the end, Maxwell said he has accomplished more as a bullfighter than a bull rider.

Top stock will be at rodeo
Salt River Rodeo Company will have more than 200 head of stock in Payson for the 2012 World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo Thursday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 19. Each animal can only be used in a single performance of a given rodeo. The stock contractor will also have five tons of hay and two tons of grain brought onto the grounds for the animals. It takes three to four hours following each performance to tend to the stock.
BY TERESA MCQUERREY ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
The cowboys and cowgirls won’t be the only competitors in the arena at the 128th Annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo in Payson. The livestock is also competing. The four-legged athletes are provided by Salt River Rodeo Company, LLC, with the bucking horses provided by Southwick Rocky Mountain Rodeo Company. “We want to provide top stock for the rodeo, so we are working with Glen Southwick this year,” said Nancy Jane Henson, who is a co-owner of Salt River Rodeo. Henson also organizes the women’s rodeo that opens the Payson festivities. We’re not talking just a dozen or so head of livestock. The stock can only be used in a single performance of a given rodeo. So, with five performances, including the women’s rodeo event on Thursday night, Aug. 16, Salt River Rodeo will have about 200 head at the Payson Event Center. The company will have at least 20 calves and 20 steers for the women’s rodeo. Salt River Rodeo will have 25 to 30 head of bulls for the four performances of the main rodeo, 50 horses for the bareback and saddle bronc events, 30 calves for the calf roping, 30 steers for the steer wrestling and another 30 steers for the team roping. Even though each head of stock is used just once in the rodeo arena during an event, “Stock eats seven days a week. It needs to be watched and doctored,” officials with Salt River Rodeo said. There will probably be five tons of hay and two tons of grain brought onto the grounds for the animals. It takes three to four hours following a rodeo to tend to all the stock. Salt River Rodeo will also have a fair number of personnel on hand to work the rodeo too. It supplies the two bullfighters and the barrel man for the performances; has two pickup men in the arena; six hands to unload, sort and feed the stock; and two drivers transporting it.

Salt River Rodeo in stock contracting business for 20 years FROM PAGE 26 JERRY DORENKAMP
Jerry Dorenkamp of Tucson, Ariz. manages Salt River Rodeo Company with partners Cody Resor of Willcox, Ariz. and Owen Washburn of Lordsburg, N.M. Salt River Rodeo Company has been in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association stock contracting business for more than 20 years. “We have consistently had livestock chosen for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo,” Dorenkamp said. Dorenkamp, a PRCA member since 1979 and a current PRCA Gold Card holder, has been involved in rodeo all of his life, both as a competitor and stock contractor. He was runner-up to the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association steer wrestling championship in 1977. In 1986, he was 16th in the PRCA steer wrestling world standings when his career was cut short with a shoulder injury. He still finished that year in the top 25 in the world. Dorenkamp then began to flank bucking horses and bulls, rekindling the stock contractor phase of his life. For 17 years he was the livestock
superintendent, chute boss and flankman at top ranked rodeos in Denver, Colo.; San Antonio, Texas; Houston, Texas; Albuquerque, N.M.; Nampa, Idaho; Ft. Madison, Iowa; Sidney, Iowa; San Angelo, Texas and Austin, Texas to name a few. He was also a flankman at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo every year from 1987 to 2005 and again in 2011. He has been breeding bucking horses and bulls in Holly, Colo. and Tucson, Ariz. for more than 17 years. He is currently bucking some ranch-raised horses at PRCA rodeos. His breeding program includes a grandson of Calgary Stampede’s Grated Coconut who holds a recordtying six times PRCA Bucking Horse of the Year title. In 2010 and 2011 there were 10 Grated Coconut related horses at the Wrangler NFR. Among these were Grated Coconut’s mother, Coconut Roll; sisters, half-brothers and half-sisters; sons and daughters. Also currently on the bucking horse list are daughters of the famed Night Jacket stud from PRCA stock Contractor J Bar J Rodeo Company. Night Jacket sold in 2009 for a record $200,000 to Lancaster & Pickett. In
Jerry Dorenkamp and his Salt River Rodeo Company partners all have rodeo experience. Dorenkamp was a steer wrestler, Cody Resor a roper and Owen Washburn a bull rider.
Dennis Fendler photo
2010 and 2011 there were 16 Night Jacket offspring at the Wrangler NFR. A recent addition to the breeding program is Bobby Balou, who is a halfbrother to the five-time PRCA World Champion Bucking Horse, Sippin’ Velvet. Some of the bull bloodlines in Dorenkamp’s breeding program belong to Wrangle Rivets, Blueberry Wine and Oscar. CODY RESOR
Cody Resor has been in the stock contracting business since his early years. He is a rancher in Willcox, Ariz. where he headquarters with his bucking horses and bulls. Resor has com-
peted in rodeos his whole life and now focuses on the stock contracting end. He still competes in the team roping and calf roping in the PRCA. OWEN WASHBURN
Owen Washburn, 1996 Professional Bull Riding World Champion Bull Rider, has been raising bucking bulls in Lordsburg, N.M. for more than 12 years. He has raised numerous bulls that have qualified to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Washburn competed in the PRCA bull riding and qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo one time and the PBR National Finals 10 times.

Scoot your boots at traditional rodeo dance BY TERESA MCQUERREY ROUNDUP STAFF REPORTER
There was a time when the dance after the rodeo was as big an attraction as the competition in the arena. There was a time that the rodeo dance was so popular it had to be held on Payson’s Historic Main Street — there were too many people to move in the old watering holes — the Oxbow and Winchester. The street dance went by the wayside due to concerns about public safety, the Winchester burned down and the Oxbow struggled and eventually closed. The Oxbow is open again and owners Ernie and Sue Padilla have lined up the popular band Mogollon and local group, Moonshine Mafia to play both Friday and Saturday nights, with Dusty Roads performing an early show Saturday. There will also be music and dancing at the Payson Event Center Friday and Saturday nights after the rodeo.
The Payson Rodeo Committee will feature a Rodeo After Party each evening with music by Junction 87. All are welcome and admission is free with an August 2012 rodeo ticket stub. There will be no cover charge. JUNCTION 87
Junction 87 is one of the Rim Country’s most popular bands. Members Billy Ichida, Jim Norman and Bob Lewis perform at numerous venues around the area. The group has been together seven years and started out of the jam sessions they used to have down in Rye. For a time, they split their weekends doing regular performances in Rye and at the Buffalo Bar & Grill, but since the bar in Rye closed, the Buffalo is their exclusive regular spot. They are at the Buffalo every Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The band has also been featured as part of the Town of Payson Concert Under the Stars series and has made appearances in Japan, Ichida’s native country.

MOGOLLON
Moonshine Mafia is a four-piece band based out of Payson. It has a great stage presence and is known for high-energy shows and crowd interaction. The four members have a great chemistry together and compliment each other’s styles perfectly on stage. Their musical ability is phenomenal, and they are unique in the fact that they all have lead vocal ability and sing three-part harmonies on a majority of their music. Between the four members, they have played at the biggest venues in Arizona, opened for national acts, made numerous radio and television appearances, and played for a majority of the rodeos in Arizona. They are building a huge following with their live shows and original music. Moonshine Mafia’s member are Clay Sopeland, lead vocals and guitar; Taylor Hale, lead vocals and bass; Deak Dietrich, lead vocals, lead guitar and steel guitar; and Lance Chabot, drums and backing vocals.
Mogollon began in the town of Overgaard in 1979. The name of the band is derived from the Mogollon Rim, where Overgaard is located. Playing music was a good way for a few high school buddies to impress the girls and to combat the boredom of a small town. After a few performances around the area, people agreed they had potential to become more. Today, Mogollon has earned the reputation as one of the premier country rock entertainment groups in the West. They can play about anything — from Hank Williams to Pink Floyd to their original written songs. With great vocals, incredible guitar wizardry, dueling fiddles and a highenergy stage show, Mogollon has left people of all ages and all musical tastes wanting more. Members are founder Duane Moore, singer, guitar and fiddle; founder George Brunson, guitar and fiddle; Jon Kinsey, drummer; and Bryan Kuban, bass.
