Dean-O-Holics have Bob Caudle as Dean Martin, Andre’ Williams as Sammy Davis Jr., and Mike Martis as Frank Sinatra. These three entertainers have mastered the songs, moves and jokes of the famed Rat Pack. This venue has the flavor of a true Las Vegas show when Vegas was a glamorous strip filled with lights, elegant casinos and show rooms. Andre’ (Sammy) brings the house down with Mr. Bojangles — hat, dance and all; Dean with his signature song “Everybody Loves Somebody” holding his traditional martini glass and Frank sings “New York, New York” dressed in a tux with his signature hat, which earned him a standing ovation for the finale in the Yosemite Courtyard. The group uses props like a large bass fiddle that opens up into a bar, fake cigarettes and an old style microphone to add to the mood. To make a reservation for the New Year’s Eve Party, call 1-800-777-PLAY (7529) extension 1001. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in a different kind of style with Scott Hallock and Suzie Kiraly in the Apache Spirits Lounge from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. You can enjoy the excitement on the slot floor as the New Year comes rolling in with various upbeat music. Free Souvenir Martini Glasses will be given out this evening and night. Enjoy great music and great food from The Grille or the Apache Spirits Lounge. Whatever way you wish to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Mazatzal Hotel & Casino has the Magic in the Mountains.

The Payson Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore inventory changes every day. Stop in and you might find enough furniture to redo a living room — or an organ on which to learn a new hobby. You can find a full-sized range for the kitchen or a microwave in just about every size and everything is offered at a reasonable price, with the proceeds helping the PAHH program that improves lives.

Payson Area Habitat for Humanity shares its best-kept secret The best-kept secret in Payson is a secret no more. Once voted the “Best Kept Secret in Payson” — the Habitat for Humanity ReStore is like the “little engine that could.” Starting on a wing and a prayer in March 2008 with the help of the Walla family, dedicated staff and volunteers stocked the store with “just enough donations to fill each shelf” according to outgoing store manager, Kathy Bickert, who has led the ReStore team from the beginning. In less than 18 months, the little store outgrew its 3,000-square-foot domain, and Habitat took another leap of faith — moving into a 7,000-square-foot store next to the Urgent Care in the Payson Center, where McDonald’s is located, at the corner of Highways 87 and 260. Now, the ReStore is making another transition, as Bickert makes one of her own — moving on to reopen a Payson landmark, the 260 Café. It’s both a sad and joyful move, as she pursues her lifelong dream of becoming a chef. Bickert will leave the ReStore in the very capable hands of interim manager, Joyce Karnes, who will manage the store until a new ReStore manager can be found. Joyce’s team includes fix-it shop manager Scott Culbertson, another longtime volunteer, along with friendly donation coordinators Zach Horsley and Aaron Batey. Bickert has faith the store will continue to grow and thrive. “I feel our success is due to our friendly staff and to our dedicated volunteers. We also like networking with the community, our customers and donors, friends and family, and our local contractors and businesses, all of which have been a huge part

of the ReStore’s growing to the size it is today,” she said.

SOMETHING NEW AND UNEXPECTED EVERY DAY So what’s in the ReStore? That depends on the day you come visit, because the inventory is always changing. The store carries everything from appliances and furniture, to construction materials like sinks, cabinets, countertops, doors, windows, fencing and paint. You’ll often find electronics, computers, books, videos, lighting and accessories of all shapes and sizes. Furniture like sofas, dining sets and shelves tend to sell pretty quickly. So do appliances. Right now, you’ll even find CDmaking and packaging equipment. Today, Culbertson is stacking pieces of aluminum siding. Tomorrow, they might end up as metal sculpture, or put to good use in a remodeling project, rather than ending up in the landfill. At the counter, a local woman buys an overstuffed chair and some glass fuses for her mom to use in art projects. In the store manager’s office, Kathy and Joyce research the price of a first edition memoir by Ulysses S. Grant. “Reuse and Recycle” has always been the motto of the store, which literally has given new life to thousands of pounds of merchandise that might otherwise end up in the landfill. Loyal customers love the ReStore, and not only because (in true Payson thrift-store tradition) they can find new treasures every day, but because the store is a genuinely fun place to be. Even well behaved four-legged friends are welcome.

One customer says, “When we started shopping at the ReStore we never thought a Thrift Store would be so fun and friendly. As we continue to go back every week, because we don’t want to miss out on anything, Kathy and her staff have helped us find items and make new friends and now we have a thrift store family. Heck, she even knows the dog’s name and he knows where the treats are.” People come to shop and also to visit friends. Larry, a loyal customer, says it this way, “The ReStore has been an amazing place to shop. Every time I go in, it’s my ‘Happy Place.’ There’s always plenty of customers and laughter in the aisles, as the staff is hard at work.”

A LARGER MISSION Beyond giving new life to gently used furniture, household items, appliances, tools and construction supplies, the ReStore has a larger mission. It provides financial support for the Payson Area Habitat for Humanity to help build or renovate homes for deserving families. Habitat volunteers are also planning some new projects for 2012 and beyond. “Neighborhood revitalization is all about working with our community, other nonprofits, and businesses to identify areas of greatest need and create positive changes in the community,” says new executive director Jennifer Baltz. “We’re starting out with smaller projects like critical home repairs, painting and weatherizing for lower-income families and seniors, so we can help even more people in our area.”

In true Habitat tradition, the programs are a hand up, not a handout — qualifying homeowners will contribute time and a portion of the cost to help pay it forward to others in need. “Working on day-long projects is a great team-building opportunity for businesses, groups and faith-based communities. You can make a big difference without making a big time commitment,” says Baltz.

DONATING TO HABITAT AND THE RESTORE A great place to start now is by donating your gently used furniture, appliances, household goods, and building supplies to the ReStore. Donations should be in working order, and in good condition, so they can be resold. “We don’t take clothes or mattresses, and we ask that you donate only items that can be resold,” notes Karnes. “That is a big help to us.” Call (928) 474-4247 for pick-up of large items. Make your donations before the end of the year if you want to take a charitable deduction on your 2011 taxes. Volunteers are also warmly welcomed at the store, no matter how many hours you can give. Cash contributions to the Payson Area Habitat for Humanity also qualify for the dollar-for-dollar Arizona Charitable Tax Credit if you itemize. Your tax dollars can stay here and do good works in Payson and the Rim Country. The ReStore is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday — however, it will closed on Black Friday, Nov. 25. It will be open on Saturday, Nov. 26.

Make your home ready for the holidays with easy, affordable decor updates Welcoming friends and family into your home is one of the best ways to celebrate the season. One of the keys to making visitors feel right at home is to be a happy host. So, do yourself — and your guests — a favor and put a little effort into getting your home holiday houseguest perfect. Since your house will be full with visitors over the holidays, go beyond cleaning and organizing. Adding touches of festive decor will create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and if there are do-it-yourself projects still on the to-do list, now is the best time to finish them. Not only will your home look fresh and revived to you, but your guests will certainly notice your home’s updated appearance. To get your home ready for hosting holiday guests, follow this room-by-room checklist. Whether you want to tackle one room at a time or do it all at once, breaking down your tasks can make the process much easier.

THE KITCHEN As the central hub of the home, guests will naturally congregate in the kitchen, so spend time making small, budget-friendly updates to make the space more comfortable, for both chef and audience. • A fresh palette: Make an update that will instantly refresh your space with a new paint color. Be empowered to experiment with a bold, food-inspired hue such as a

ARA Content photo

You’ll be spending a lot of time in your living spaces with your guests, so make sure they’re decorated in festive spirit and ready to accommodate a crowd.

coffee color. With its limited wall space, the kitchen makes an ideal place to use a bolder hue for just the right pop of color. • Details matter: Clear the clutter and make room for all the chef’s necessities in your kitchen, making the chef’s job easier. Add updated cabinet and drawer pulls as well as a touch-faucet that offers style and ease of use.

THE LIVING ROOM You’ll be spending a lot of time in your living spaces with your guests, so make

sure they’re decorated in festive spirit and ready to accommodate a crowd. • Layer lighting: Don’t just rely on overhead fixtures. Adding softer ambient light (like wall sconces), task lighting (undercabinet lights or desk lamps) and accent lighting (such as art lighting or candles) will help set your desired mood. • Decor details: The mantel is a perfect focal point for holiday decorating. Add some atmospheric scent, color and texture with fresh evergreen garlands and holiday plants. Spray paint terracotta pots silver and gold and plant amaryllis, Christmas rose or rosemary. Or, personalize your display by placing family photos of holidays past and treasured heirlooms over the fireplace, where everyone can see them.

GUEST ROOMS Both guest bedrooms and bathrooms should be given extra special attention when hosting overnight holiday visitors. Consider everything a guest might need and then add some little extras to make their experience even better. • Practical fixes: For your guest bedroom, adding portable lighting like small table lamps will make the room seem friendlier when added to overhead lighting and will keep guests from running across the room in the dark after switching off the lights. Adding a decorative mirror is a muchappreciated touch and takes little effort.

• Comforts of home: Ensure that your guest rooms, particularly the bathrooms, make visitors of all ages feel comfortable. Update your bathroom hardware with stylish faucets, knobs and even grab bars to ensure no guests slip or fall when entering and exiting the shower. Products, like a dual towel rod and grab bar, offer both style and function to make your guests feel at home. Twinkling lights, fragrant wreaths and freshly baked cookies help set the stage, but holiday guests truly feel at home when you provide a warm, cozy environment. The place to start: your front door. Create a welcoming first impression by replacing an old, unsightly entry door with a stylish, more energy-efficient one. During cold weather, keep window treatments open during the day to capture the sun’s heat and close them at night to help keep heat inside. During warmer months, close the blinds, shades or curtains during the heat of the day to reflect the sun’s heat away from your home’s interior. As important as it is for your guests to be comfortable at your home during the holidays, it should be a relaxing place for you too, and one that you can enjoy long after the holiday season. By preparing your home well ahead of time, you’ll be able to focus on enjoying the holidays with your family and friends.

Spinal decompression is a specialized form of computer controlled traction therapy that is very effective for many types of neck- and back-related problems. Like chiropractic adjusting, it is a conservative, non-surgical treatment method. As such, it works very well with chiropractic care, though some patients make good progress with spinal decompression alone. Chiropractic adjusting works by moving bones in the spine so there is less (or no) pressure on nerves. Similarly, spinal decompression therapy helps relieve nerve pressure by helping increase the health and height of the discs between the vertebrae. About the time our bodies reach full skeletal maturity, in our late teens or early twenties, the blood supply to the discs dries up. After that, nutrition for the disc has to seep through the end plates of the vertebrae above and below it. Spinal decompression therapy enhances that process by creating a vacuum within the disc, which causes more water, protein, vitamins and minerals to flow into the disc, so it is better able to repair and rebuild itself. In many cases, even a small improvement in disc health and height is enough to help relieve nerve pressure, relieving back

True value means loving your glasses every day and buying glasses that insure clear, practical and comfortable lenses. At Payson Eye Care Center, the staff recognizes the value of every person and is guided by its commitment to excellence

and caring service. We would like to share a bit of Dr. Ford’s background with you so you can be familiar with his studies, experience and values. Dr. Troy Ford graduated from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1990 and began practicing in Payson that same year. What began as a two-day a week practice has evolved into a full scope primary eye care center. Dr. Ford enjoys raising his family here and is proud to call Payson his home. He has been active in the service to his church as well as supporting school and municipal activities through the years. Dr. Ford has always invested in the latest technology to ensure the most accurate and efficient diagnoses and treatment of the medical eye conditions. Diagnosis of

conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration require sophisticated tests to help patients choose the appropriate treatment plan. Payson Eye Care Center recently acquired a new high definition Ocular Coherent Tomography unit that allows for a “living cross-section” of the retina or optic nerve to be imaged. Digital photography of the anterior and posterior eye document medical eye conditions. State of the art Visual Field testing allows for peripheral vision to be accurately documented. The newest addition to Dr. Ford’s up-todate technology is the Visioffice System. We will receive this state of the art optical system in January. We will be the only practice in the Rim Country able to offer the visioffice digital lens system. The Visioffice

System is able to measure the real 3D position of each eye’s unique eye rotation center (ERC) to create the most individualized lenses possible — eyecode lenses. In closing we would like to remind the community the importance of getting an eye exam at least every one to two years. Some of the serious eye diseases that take your vision away have no symptoms. As 2011 begins to wind down, the hectic holiday season is only getting started. It is important to remember that the beginning of winter means more than just presents and Black Friday — it’s about kicking back and celebrating family, friends and good food. This time tends to be packed with fun and holiday cheer, but the last thing you want is to be partied out too early. Pacing yourself and not getting overwhelmed by the endless gatherings (and dessert trays) is essential. Here are a few easy tips to help make sure that you’re enjoying this season to the fullest and truly celebrating a great year: • Make everything a memory: We all know that cleaning, cooking and decorating can be a chore, but by throwing on some music and making it a group or family activity, these can easily become some of your fondest holiday memories. • Try not to overbook: One of the most stressful dangers of the holidays is committing to too many parties. Keep a calendar and be honest with yourself — there’s no need to make every celebration if you aren’t going to enjoy them. • Keep it simple: Not a chef? Don’t sweat it. Pick a simple, signature dish for the season and stick to it. Make a fruit salad or bake your favorite kind of cookies so you’re not stressing about what to bring before every party.

Pacing yourself keeps holidays under control.

• Come prepared: We all say we’re going to watch ourselves when it comes to eating this time of year, but the madness of the season makes “over-celebrating” an alltoo-common occurrence. If for some reason the cranberry mold and side dishes get the best of you, make sure you have a reliable remedy on hand to keep you covered and trucking through the holidays. Before you get swept away by turkeys, decorations and parties, remember all that that the holiday season is truly about: celebrating with loved ones and reflecting on a year full of memories. These simple suggestions will help you keep the energy high and the stress low during these cold, yet heartwarming, months.

Try adding a twist to your holiday staples this year We look forward to the holidays for many reasons, and the food is often near the top of the list. But while traditional holiday dishes are a familiar comfort that everyone in the family can look forward to, there’s no harm in adding a slight twist to your staples to give them a gourmet touch. No, it’s not a good idea to scrap your family favorites altogether, but adding a surprising special touch to this year’s dishes could be all you need to invigorate your holiday meal. Maybe it’s augmenting your sweet potatoes with a couple of tasty additions or providing a finishing touch in the form of a delicious sauce for your traditional steak dinner. Even just adding a slight change to one part of your meal will bring a little extra life to your traditional fare. Nielsen-Massey Vanillas offers a line of pure vanilla and gourmet extract products that can be a part of your solution when you’re looking for ways to add that extra little bit of flavor to your classic dishes. They also provide a number of holiday recipes if you’re looking for a place to start. Here are a few ideas for classing up traditional holiday foods.

SIDE DISH If you’re like many families, sweet potatoes are a staple at this time of year. While nobody can argue with their raw goodness, try taking this side dish to the next level by adding a tablespoon of Nielsen-Massey Tahitian Pure Vanilla Extract with some cooked and crumbled bacon. Whipping your potatoes with those ingredients, some cream cheese and a dash of maple syrup

will have your guests asking what you did to make your usual sweet potatoes taste so good.

MAIN COURSE Filet Mignon is a special treat this time of year for many. There’s no need to mess with greatness as you cook this prime cut of beef the way you know best, but consider adding this sauce to give your dinner guests an extra rich experience. Vanilla Wine Sauce 2 cups organic beef stock 1/4 cup dry red wine 1 small onion, sliced in half 3 large sprigs of fresh marjoram or oregano 2 whole garlic cloves 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Organic Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract 1-1/2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon light brown sugar 2 tablespoons butter, softened Combine the stock, wine, onion, marjoram, garlic, vanilla extract, tomato paste and brown sugar in a saucepan. Simmer until reduced by half. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a small saute pan. Whisk the butter into the sauce one tablespoon at a time over medium heat. The sauce will become glossy and slightly thickened. Once the steaks are done, spoon the sauce over them. Consider adding sauteed mushrooms for an extra complement to the steaks and sauce.

DESSERT The dessert spreads at holiday gatherings are something to behold. You’ll often have a table full of desserts laid out for grazing throughout your party. Try this twist on gingerbread cookies and you’re sure to see your confections disappear

before the rest. Nielsen-Massey Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies 2-1/2 cups unbleached allpurpose flour 1/4 cup high-quality cocoa powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup (1-1/4 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1 tablespoon NielsenMassey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Pure Chocolate Extract 1 egg 1/4 cup original unsulfured molasses Line two light-colored, heavy baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt, set aside. To a large mixing bowl, add butter, granulated and brown sugars, Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract and Pure Chocolate Extract; beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy. Beat in egg until combined. Add molasses, beat until combined. Reduce speed to low, add dry ingredients in three batches, beating after each addition, until combined. Divide dough into two even pieces, press each piece into a disk shape, wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for one hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Working with one piece of dough at a time, place on a clean, lightly floured surface. For dusting the rolling surface and pin: In a small bowl, combine 1 table-

spoon of cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. This will help keep the cookies a nice chocolatey brown. Roll dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Using a 2-3/4-inch cookie cutter, cut desired cookie shapes. Transfer cookies to prepared cookie sheets using a thin metal spatula. Bake eight to 10 minutes, remove and place cookies on wire a rack to cool. For a crispier cookie, roll dough to a 1/3-inch thickness and adjust baking time accordingly.

Whatever your holiday specialty may be, think about ways you can make it extra special this year. Scan your recipe books, look for a variation of the recipe on the Internet or just use your imagination and give it a test run before the holidays. Then when it comes time to enjoy, your guests are sure to be impressed. From ARA Content

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Payson enjoys growth Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona (BBBSAZ) is one of the largest Big Brother Big Sister affiliates in the country and traces its roots back to 1955. The agency’s mission is to help children realize their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with volunteers who care about them and to make sure that every child has a positive and active adult role model in their life. This year BBBSAZ’s goal is to match 2,300 boys and girls (Littles) throughout central Arizona with positive adult mentors (Bigs). The mission is to provide children facing adversity in Arizona with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better. The organization’s vision is that all children achieve success in life. Mentoring works — The youth in the program are ordinary kids who just need someone who can provide stability and friendship. We strive to match these youth with mentors who can enrich their lives culturally, socially and academically. About the programs — Mentors meet with their Little two to four times per month for at least one year in one of the following programs: • Community Based Match — Spend time with a child in your own neighborhood doing things you both enjoy. Go to the park, watch a sporting event, grab a pizza, do homework — you choose the activity and days. • Site Based Match — Spend one hour per week with your Little at a nearby elementary school. Play a board game, go on the playground, help with homework or just have lunch and talk. • Couple/Family Match — A couple or entire family can be with a child in your own neighborhood. Littles are children, ages 6 to 18, being mentored and Bigs are adult mentors. Independent research examining the impact on Littles has found that after months of spending time with their Bigs, Little Brothers and Little Sisters were: • 46 percent less likely to begin using • illegal drugs • 27 percent less likely to begin using • alcohol • 52 percent less likely to skip school • 37 percent less likely to skip a class • More confident of their performance in • schoolwork • One-third less likely to hit someone • Getting along better with their families Independent research examining the impact on adults who were once Littles has found that having a Big Brother or Big Sister had a positive and meaningful impact on their lives: • 49 percent cited having someone in their life that provided guidance and individual attention • 62 percent of former Littles consider themselves to be more successful than their peers who weren’t involved in the program • 64 percent said that their relationship with their Big was extremely important or very important • 64 percent of Littles are still in touch with their Bigs and of these 75 percent have a close relationship with him/her • 90 percent agree their Big made them feel better about themselves In 2001, the agency opened its first satellite office in Payson, and has grown dramat-

ically in the past 10 years. Since 2007, the Payson program has grown from 15 matches to 110. During the 2010-2011 school year, the Payson mentoring program provided sitebased mentoring programs to all schools within the Payson Unified School District. There were 163 boys and girls involved in the program with 85 percent of matches following a peer-mentoring format where a high school student mentored an elementary school or middle school student. Of the youth served, 60 percent came from single parent households or foster care, 68 percent lived in households with annual incomes of less than $30,000, and 66 percent were part of the free or reduced lunch program. Both the children being mentored as well as their high school mentors show improved academic performance and a greater level of community involvement. The accomplishments that have been made in Payson are particularly impressive given that they were achieved by two parttime employees: Robert Henley and April Quinlan. This school year, BBBSAZ expects to expand the program further to serve 120 more matches. It’s a strong program that builds strong youth and a better community. “We could not do it without you. To assure that you receive the best results in care and physical rehabilitation here are some important things to consider: • Does the facility offer adequate nursing coverage? • Does the facility have an onsite doctor? • Is the facility accredited with the Joint Commission (The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations)? • Does the facility offer a daily wound therapy care program? At Payson Care Center, the answer is “yes” to all of the above. The center offers 24/7 nurse coverage and has just announced the addition of Dr. Terrance Rousseau as its onsite doctor. The Payson Regional Medical Center is accredited with the Joint Commission, shouldn’t your skilled nursing facility be as well? Payson Care Center has received the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission. This is a voluntary program requiring additional surveying to assure the safety of and quality of care for patients and residents. Payson Care Center also staffs a licensed wound therapy nurse and maintains a daily wound therapy care program. The administration and staff know how important it is for a patient to get back home, by choosing Payson Care Center, that goal will be achieved. Maybe this holiday season you are con-

Payson Care Center is proud to announce that Dr. Terrance Rousseau has joined its team as the full-time, onsite physician. Dr. Rousseau’s role will be to assure the quality of care patients receive and aid in communicating with the patient’s primary care physician. Dr. Rousseau and Payson Care Center medical director Dr. Abawi will share in the responsibility of attending to the many patients who come to the care center that are unattached to a physician. Life Care Centers of America, the parent company of Payson Care Center, recently initiated the Onsite Physician Program. Life Care has already implemented the program at the many skilled nursing facilities it owns throughout the country. The Onsite Physician Program was established to meet the demands in the changes that the health care industry is currently experiencing. The addition of an onsite physician has proven to reduce the number of patients that return to the hospital after being discharged to a skilled nursing facility. It is believed the Onsite Physician Program will be a benefit to everyone, patient, hospital and Payson Care Center. Shopping for a skilled nursing facility is probably not at the top of anyone’s list this or any holiday season. But let’s face it; winter’s icy streets and walkways are a haven for slips, falls and trips to the hospital emergency room. Winter months are the “high season” for hip, knee and shoulder surgeries that subsequently land you in a skilled nursing facility for short-term phys-

TCCA brings one-man show to Rim Country The Tonto Community Concert Association will present Chaplin A Life In Concert, which dramatizes the life story of the brilliant, yet controversial, career of Charlie Chaplin, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 29. Multi-platinum singer/songwriter David Pomeranz will perform this one-man, theatricalmusical tribute to Charlie Chaplin at the Payson High School Auditorium. Single tickets are $35 (if seating is available). Children and youth, grade 12 and under, will be admitted free when accompanied by a ticket holding adult. For more information visit the association Web site at www. tccarim.org or call 928-478-4363 or (928) 474-4189. Called “… touching, clever, theatrical, wonderful,” by Michael Feinstein, the program is part theater and part concert. Pomeranz fully reveals his considerable writing and composing skills in the creation of Chaplin - A Life in Concert. On stage, the role demands Pomeranz portray more than 25 personalities and that he accompanies himself on the piano. Pomeranz’s songwriting career includes 22 platinum and 18 gold records, including Barry Manilow’s hit single, Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again, as well as original songs for major motion pictures and hit television shows. Previous musical theater credits include Time, starring Cliff Richard and Sir Laurence Olivier in London (2008), Under the Bridge in collaboration with Kathie Lee Gifford in New York (2007), and Saving Aimee, opening at Seattle’s 5th

Avenue Theatre in October of 2011. The Tonto Community Concert Association is committed to bringing high quality entertainment to the Rim Country through an annual concert series and support of the fine arts in Payson schools. This series is intended as an enriching cultural experience for the people of Payson and those in surrounding communities. The Pomeranz program concludes the 2011 portion of TCCA’s 2011-2012 season. The second half of the season starts in January. The upcoming programs are: Billy Dean, 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12 – Dean brings Nashville star power to every stage he graces. His musical artistry transcends genre and rakes in awards, including The Academy of County Music’s New Male Vocalist of the Year and Grammy for a country tribute, Amazing Grace. A gifted songwriter and fabulous guitarist, Dean is also an accomplished actor and has appeared in many television shows. After decades of churning out hits, Dean gives every audience an unforgettable performance. American Spirit, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Matt Davenport Productions is returning to Payson with yet another hit. Seen through the eyes of a well-meaning, but slightly befuddled mayor of Your Hometown, U.S.A., American Spirit is a rousing 90minute song, dance and storytelling journey through parade routes and battlefields, town halls and concert halls. David Pomeranz and his one-man show, Chaplain - A Life in Concert, will be in Payson courtesy of the Tonto Community Concert Association for a performance at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 29. This is the last show of the first half of TCCA’s 2011-2012 season. Programs resume in January.

Prohibition jazz growing out of Civil War spirituals, and enjoy America’s battlefield and ball field heroes rubbing elbows with entertainers and politicians. A musical event filled with humor and heart, this production will renew your American spirit. The Water Coolers, 7 p.m., Friday, March 16 – With original music and parodies of familiar songs, on-point material about life and work, and superior comedy writing, this cast of five New York

City comics and singers, with piano accompaniment, celebrates the insanity of everyday life. Each performance is a high-energy, hilarious session of song and sketch comedy, kept fresh by the ever-changing challenges of modern life. The Water Coolers turn headaches and hassles into hilarity. The American Tenors, 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19 – Formed in 2002, The American Tenors have delighted audiences across the

United States and Europe with their captivating show. As individuals, Marcus McConico, Nathan Granner and Ben Gulley boast impressive credentials, having accumulated an array of awards and performed in opera and theater productions from Italy to Hawaii. Accompanied by piano, their clear, buoyant voices join to enthrall and inspire audiences. The American Tenors truly represent “a new generation in American singing.”

ball and dance at the “Flying V” ranch, which was attended by upwards of forty persons. The guests all arrived by sundown, and after an early supper we repaired to the large dancing floor, built expressly for the occasion and enclosed with canvas. Dancing was in order until 10 o’clock, when we were called to the “big supper.” The tables were loaded with turkey, pork, cakes and pies — a splendid repast — prepared by the Misses Ellison and Mrs. Kyle, who never overlook an opportunity to make everything a success. Our hosts, with the assistance of Mr. James Hale, attended to our every want. After supper we returned to the ball room, and the floor being newly waxed, dancing was resumed and continued until the sun rose upon a most beautiful day. After breakfast the horses were brought in from the pasture and we took our departure for our respective homes with the thought indelibly fixed in our minds that Messrs. Ketcherside and McFarland know just how to entertain. A Guest. — December 7, 1899, Arizona Silver Belt Dances were a popular way to celebrate and they were usually anchored by a meal, as in this case. Thanksgiving also means turkeys and around this time of year turkey is on everyone’s mind. This next clip is about an interesting promotion that Pinal Brewery in Globe did in 1889. TURKEY SHOOTING on the grounds of the Pinal Brewery, Wednesday, Nov. 27th; conditions: Fifty cents a shot — distance 180 yards. All who think themselves capable of winging a turkey at that distance will be given an opportunity to show their skill. — November 16, 1889, Arizona Silver Belt Pinal Brewery was the sister brewery of Payson Brewery, which began in Payson in the mid 1880s. Amongst the principals in both was August Pieper. Just a couple months after this event, Pieper would move to Payson from Globe, divesting his interest in Pinal Brewery and taking over Payson Brewery completely. Folks don’t just want to wing turkeys though around Thanksgiving, they also want to hunt them, but sometimes they don’t go into the woods as this clip from the November 29, 1900 Arizona Silver Belt shows. Thanksgiving being near at hand, somebody evidently intends that not only due thanks shall be offered, but a “full dinner pail” shall be the result that day by careful attention to business during the week. Mr. Callaghan has lost by one night’s haul nine of his finest chickens, while Samuel Chilson lost his entire flock.

A RESEARCHER’S LIST OF THANKS There are more tools than ever to help a researcher. Here are some things for which I am thankful: • Genealogy.Az.Gov – Arizona deaths and births are much easier to track with this great tool. With birth records ranging from 1855 to 1935 and death records from 1844 to 1960, you should be able to find a birth or death certificate for an ancestor in Arizona. I wish every state had a database this good. (One note: The records on this state site are still only as good as the original records fed into the system.) • ChroniclingAmerica.Loc.Gov – A free site put together by the National Archives, it features a variety of newspapers up to 1922. Not every newspaper has been digitized yet. • Glorecords.Blm.Gov – Did one of your ancestors patent some land? Find out on this site. They have digitized a lot of land surveys as well, particularly for Arizona. There is a nice pool of old maps in this region. • The Arizona Memory Project site – If you simply have a general interest in Arizona history, you can’t go wrong visiting this site. In particular, check out some of the oral history interviews from the Arizona Heritage Research Foundation. It’ll take up some bandwith, but will provide you with a terrific insight into Gila County ranching history.

CORRECTION In my last article I referenced Polly Brown. She owned a number of places and in her later years owned the Elks Bar, not the Pioneer Bar. Don’t forget, you can always send feedback or questions to me at timothy@zanegrey.net.
