MOUNTAIN BREEZE COURT Blacksburg, VA

A site that had previously been cleared and used as a drainage basin for the surrounding area was in need of a drastic change. Rather than change the purpose of the site I chose to embrace the functional characteristic the site held. The town home development’s main feature would be an elevated wood walkway to connect the residents to nature by rising into the treetops and lowering into constructed wetlands . The site will be reforested to serve several purposes. One will be to bring an aesthetic quality to the baron land that had been cleared . Through revegetation the runoff passing through will be slowed down decreasing the runoff surge that come in areas of high impervious surface. With a knowledge of horticultural principals a careful selection of plants that could resist the went soils. Topped with researching and applying best management practices Mountain Breeze Court not only brings the natural beauty of the site to the community but serves as a functional site.

HIDDEN COVE RESORT Portland Parish, Jamaica

This project focused on the development of a large scale resort. The project was more about the conceptual design and embracing the strong cultural traditions throughout Jamaica. Hidden Cove Resort took a nautical theme that would allow for a rustic feel as well as a modern touch . The biggest thing gained from this project was that it was completely collaborative with other studio members. It is easy to design by yourself but learning to work as a team was a new experience. My group of three chose to create a resort that offered a large amount of privacy by creating small lagoons surrounded by villas. As a group we created a program for the resort, sketched storyboard ideas for how you would experience the site, and developed a master plan. We then took focus in different sections of the resort. While still contributing details and support to one another. With a limited amount of time sections, detail plans , and descriptive perspectives shaped the idea of our Jamaican resort.

TURNER PLAZA Blacksburg, VA

This project was about the redesign of a small plaza and parking lot. This area became a high transit pedestrian area that outdated its current function. By studying common entrances and desired paths the new design give the pedestrian dominance . As an act to counteract the previous parking lot this design focused on keeping the existing mature vegetation unharmed .

INTERCHANGE PARK Christiansburg, VA

Interchange Park was a site bounded by transportation on all sides, a leftover plot of land that had been neglected. The assignment was to take this rugged space and create an office park, Hotel, Recreation fields, and a nature walk for the surrounding community. Because of a large amount of topographic change and the considerable development taking place my objective became to replant the site with trees and tall grasses. The nature walk is provides a series of rain gardens that slow and filter the water on the site and provide and escape from the busy roads.

FOUNDATION Foundation year was a year of building a method towards design. Most projects were composed of obscure shapes and geometries but the two presented projects came to form designs that had a stronger meaning. The stairway was my first look at how the build environment can fit into the natural world. Also this became the first time a project took the human scale by looking at rise , run, and how people fit within it. The other project was a study of colo and ratios as a foundation to create form. With high attention to detail and precisian these two projects brought character to my sense of design.
