ARTIST BIO
Sarah Boyts Yoder sees her paintings as hopeful, optimistic acts, and the mode of abstraction as a generous state of being. Yoder earned her Masters in Fine Arts in painting from James Madison University in 2006. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, exhibitions, and corporate and private collections throughout the United States and abroad, including the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Sarah has been the recipient of a professional fellowship in painting from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and has been a fellow multiple times at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and 100W Corsicana in Corsicana, TX.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Sarah Boyts Yoder’s paintings, while abstract, often can be seen as environments, habitats, or landscapes that invite the viewer in with playful forms and celebratory color. They are a point of focus, they give and receive energy, but they also joyfully refuse to settle down. With repeated forms and flashes of familiarity, they insist one looks closer, over and over again, and stays engaged.
The paintings create spaces that encourage the imagination to open up, to bend and stretch, to change course and to develop a tolerance for unknowability. If these are worlds within worlds, who or what might inhabit them? How would those creatures navigate the environments? Could they give the viewers ideas for how to move about and what could be?

ARTIST BIO
Abby Kasonik graduated Mangna Cum Laude from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, Department of Sculpture. Kasonik. uses clay and pattern to create imagined bodied sculptures that muddle our understanding of what is fixed and what is fluid. She is also an abstract painter, capturing moments of atmospheric change and shifts in her surrounding landscape. Kasonik received a degree in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work is in the collections of The Fralin Museum of Art, University of Virginia’s Forum Hotel at the Darden School, and the Boar’s Head Resort. She is also currently featured in the 2024 Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art Made in VA Biennale exhibition.
ARTIST STATEMENT
There is a certain thrill in not knowing. As surprise suspends the thinking mind, our more elemental self asks, ‘what do I see?’.
Made of clay, and reminiscent of legs, feminine hips, and the posture and domestic scale of animals and small bodies, these ever-shifting forms muddle our understanding of what is fixed and what is fluid.
Animating pattern obscures the surface, and erodes our anchor, eventually returning clay to the place it began, as undetermined.
These morphologies in all their mischievousness offer a place to enjoy the occasion of uncertainty.
