Wedding Accessories Innovative engraved ideas Even the most favored wedding guests won’t have memories as vivid as the wedding couple’s remembrance. However, there are warm ways to remind family and friends of the epic day you all shared. Engraved wedding accessories commemorate your happiness. Let your imagination run down the list of festive wedding items. Any or all gifts can also be personalized and given away. Cake knives, servers, even toasting glasses are innovative alternatives to keepsakes, like cake toppers and vases. Or, you may wish to honor only special guests with an engraved remembrance.

Engraved forever Guidelines to engraving There are many guidelines for engraving. Traditionally the first names of the couple, beginning with the woman’s name, are followed by the wedding date underneath. With this type of message, the individual names are usually larger. Space determines whether you use the word “and” or the ampersand (&). Traditional monograms include the woman’s first initial followed by the couple’s last initial in the center (engraved in a larger size) and followed by the man’s first initial. For a special, extra-sentimental touch, many customers may select a short message, such as “congratulations” or a short poem.

Culinary keepsakes can include candy trays from the reception table, or individual candy packs full of mints, almonds and assorted sweets. Chocolate roses can rise out of personalized wrappings. A bubbly option is engraving small sparkling wines, or miniature liquor bottles, which you can buy by the case. A lasting literary remembrance is a poem composed for the day, imprinted on scrolls, napkins or matchbooks. Satin rose buds full of rice or birdseed can be porcelain or ceramic, custom-fired with names and dates in gold. Your personal message may also be etched into glassware, brass, pewter or silver plating.

Favor your guests Giving a remembrance of your day While the memory of your day will remain on your mind for some time, giving your guests a unique favor will not only remind them of you each time they see it but will also thank them for being an important part of your special day. Favors come in many shapes, sizes and flavors! Most are personalized in some way with the bride and grooms name and date of the wedding. Choose edible favors such as almonds or chocolates or let your personality come thru with something a little different like wine stoppers, candles, picture frames, ornaments or bubbles to shower the new couple as they enter or exit the reception. Regardless of your choice, it will be a day to remember!

The History of favors The story behind the candy favor The History of favors the story behind the candy favor If you have ever attended a formal wedding, you have probably received a wedding favor, perhaps some candied Jordan almonds tied up in tulle matching the bridal party colors. Although they taste great, there’s a great deal of history behind these little bundles. Wedding favors originated with the early Europeans in the form of the groom’s cake. Each guest would receive a piece of this special cake to take home as a thank you for attending the wedding. Later, the tradition migrated to the Mediterranean region, where cake was replaced with sugar- or candy-coated Jordan almonds. The coating was white, symbolizing purity. The Jordan almond represents the bitter and the sweet of life and marriage. Traditionally, five almonds were given, representing health, wealth, happiness, longevity and fertility. Modern-day favors often include a sixth and a seventh almond: a pink one and a blue one, representing the bride and groom. In the early 1900s, immigrants from these regions brought the wedding favor to the United States. Times have changed and today almost anything goes. Favors come in many shapes, sizes and flavors! Most are personalized in some way with the bride and grooms name along with the wedding date. Stay traditional or let your personality come thru with something a little different like wine stoppers, candles or even a holiday ornament that will be used year after year. Regardless of your choice, it will be a day to remember.

Everlasting happiness Life after the wedding On your parent’s wedding day, four out of five marriages were destined to last. Today, 50 percent of the unions we celebrate end sadly. Half of America’s children spend time in a single-parent household. Our modern age has complicated the process of blending two personalities into one family. Your commitment won’t work without a willingness to grow. That’s because as your marriage takes on a life of its own, there are really three of you to contend with: you, your spouse and your union. You cannot change your spouse, but you can work on yourself and your partnership. Putting forth a positive effort means playing by some important rules. Attitude defines the difference between an argu-

ment and a discussion. Refrain from using judgmental words like “always,”“should” and “never.” Set goals for yourselves, and agree to meet them. Businesses need them, and so does a marriage. Financial goals are a definite must. Never forget that love is not only expressed by passion, but also as much by mouth and pen or gift and gesture as by thoughtfulness, respect, understanding and patience. Take time to listen. Never go to bed mad. Don’t stagnate. Continue to cultivate growth in all areas, including your marriage. Pre-marital counseling may be available through your church or other religious group and in some religions it may even be a requirement. You can also seek the help of professionals. There is no shame in this as it’s better to know as much as you can about one another before the ceremony, so you can have a fulfilling life together.

Financial independence Managing monetary gifts Financial independence managing monetary gifts Among the toasters and food processors you’ll receive as gifts, you may find a few envelopes filled with good wishes, cash and checks. Though it’s tempting to imagine spending the money, it’s also important to get your finances in order to assure lifelong security.

(301) 563-3846 8727 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD silverspring.doubletree.com

While some believe the best gifts lie in those envelopes, you have probably noticed that monetary gifts are the only ones that don’t come with instructions? Emptying those envelopes into the most prudent method of cash management isn’t really that complicated or time consuming. Not only is it vital for the married couple, but it’s critical that newlyweds get their “financial houses” in order to assure lifelong financial security. Figure your net worth. You can’t decide where to go until you’ve measured where you are. So add up the value of everything you own. Now, subtract from that everything you owe. That’s your net worth. Determine your financial goals. What are your dreams? Where do you plan to be financially in five, 10 or 15 years? Create a safety net, such as insurance, to protect against the unexpected. Plan a strategy to reach your goals. What’s it going to take to reach your goals? Seek out a financial planner to help advise you of your options. Many professionals will even provide a free initial consultation. Be sure to learn as much as possible. It’s important that you start out on the right foot and that begins with making informed decisions.

Alternatives to church Ceremony options Contrary to popular belief, not every couple gets married in a church. Nowadays, many couples are choosing to say their vows in the location where they hold the reception. If you prefer to wed in a simple, yet religious atmosphere, a nondenominational chapel could be the answer. This is especially common if your religious backgrounds differ or there are other complications such as annulment delays. The intimate setting of a chapel also allows for the freedom to add personal touches including unique music or personalized wedding vows. Special services provided by the owners of such chapels can vary from tuxedo rental and decorations to photography and

catering. Additionally, preserving a date at a chapel rather than a church may be easier, especially if you want to marry within a short time of the engagement. The scene of a sentimental moment shared between the two of you can be turned into the place where you say, “I do. Weddings are performed in parks, on cruise ships, under a temporary trellis in a backyard, or in the privacy of one’s home. Other options to explore are canopies, tents or gazebos set up outdoors or you can even exchange your marriage vows in the beauty of nature, think about a beach, a field or a forest. Weather, shelter and the number of guests must obviously be taken into consideration, but many businesses cater to these unique circumstances and can assist you in planning your wild and wonderful outdoor event.

A Creative Ceremony Expressing individualism Creating unique weddings is a timely trend. The individuality of our age is an opportunity for eloquence at this most meaningful of ceremonies. Self-written vows or symbolic silence, music from tribal drums to electric guitars, festive clothing from leather to lace, and food from old family recipes to outrageous gourmet fare epitomize the one-of-a-kind wedding. Traditions are not always bound by law. Your only legal requirement may be a marriage license obtained from the county clerk, and signed by the witnesses you choose. The person officiating need not be a minister or judge, and the vows may reflect your version of the commitment that marriage entails. Explore and amplify each other’s ideas. Chaplains and others with creative credentials can help customize your approach to this highly-symbolic ceremony. You will gain strength as a couple from every individualized aspect of your wedding. Originality in vows and guest participation, and details reflecting you as a couple, such as setting, dress, music and festivities, are a sign of sharing as a pair. With individual tastes intertwined, you will own your wedding, rather than it owning you. The process of creative exploration will also be one more way to know each other better and assume a unified identity.

Choosing where to wed Your ceremony location

For centuries churches and synagogues have been the traditional choice for the sacred act of exchanging vows. Lending an air of reverence and dignity to even the most casual of ceremonies, these holy places have created the perfect setting for the formal commitment of marriage. There are many unique options for couples who, for whatever reason, would prefer an alternate location. Consider holding the event at a non-denominational church or chapel. These locations usually have fewer rules and guidelines than other formal houses of worship, yet still provide a spiritual setting. Have the ceremony at the reception venue. Couples often choose this option as a convenience for their guests, minimizing the distance one must travel from ceremony to reception. Facilities that provide this option normally have separate areas for each event, or a plan for quickly converting the room. Sometimes places with the most personal significance make the best ceremony locations. For example, a park you walked through on your first date, the backyard where one of you grew up or a relative’s home where you enjoy spending time are all good choices. If you love the outdoors, consider holding your ceremony at a city park, the beach, a zoo, or even at the foot of a national landmark. If you’re a little on the daring and outrageous side, you might consider exchanging vows while sky diving from a plane, scuba diving, or in a hot air balloon.

YOU HANDLE WHERE YOUR GUESTS WILL SIT. WE’LL HANDLE WHERE THEY SLEEP. With Courtyard Gaithersburg Washingtonian Center, you won’t have to stress about your wedding guests’ comfort. There's plenty of relaxing space all around the property, so they'll never feel tied to their rooms.

Whatever your preference, there is no right or wrong way to say “I do.”

Friday or Sunday Saves you money Friday or Sunday saves you money If cost is a factor in your wedding budget, consider planning your wedding for a Friday or Sunday. Choosing a day not in high demand can be less expensive and more relaxing, and there are other benefits as well: • You’ll find everyone you must engage for a wedding service more open to negotiation, sometimes reconsidering price or adding extras. • Vendors will probably cheer your off-day business by doing an extra-attentive job. • Fridays and Sundays can require less notice. Choosing a Friday or Sunday also allows you to avoid making several calls to numerous vendors, only to hear, “Sorry, we’re booked on that date.â€?

• Getting married on alternative days suits the bride who prefers less pressured planning. • It’s more likely that a hotly requested band, emcee, caterer, photographer or videographer will be on hand for the wedding of your dreams • Getting treasured guests into town may be easier if extra days are options. • On a Friday, you’ll probably have your wedding in the evening, which means that the ceremony is followed immediately by dinner. This means that you will avoid the extra cost and hassle of a one-to-twohour interim reception or cocktail party. Having the ceremony and reception back to back may ensure more people at the church ceremony.

Cultural inspiration From africa with love Cultural inspiration from africa with love In planning any wedding, it is important to add your own personal and cultural touches. For an African-inspired wedding, flavor can come from exotic flowers, the style of your invitations, or anything that expresses your love for the land and the culture of your heritage. If you are planning to go full-on Africa-inspired, complete with the regal dress of the continent, set the tone of the wedding when the invitations go out. This will help your guests determine if they want to dress in traditional or African attire. State the dress explicitly, and choose an invitation design appropriate for the occasion.

accessorize their attire in an African style. The men may wear Kente cloth scarves, and your bridesmaids may dress in rich, bold colors. You may choose a traditional wedding gown, but adorn your head with an African crown fit for an African queen. Instead of the traditional bouquet, carry a beautiful bouquet of exotic flowers. Of course, the most notable use of African flavor is in the wedding ceremony. Some ways to personalize your ceremony include the use of a responsive reading, which can be adapted from the libation statement, adding a choreographed dance or, of course, “jumping the broom.” There are many possibilities in planning an African wedding. Use your knowledge of African culture to create a ceremony and reception that are unique to your vision of Africa and your relationship to it.

Your wedding party may dress in full African regalia, or

Getting married again The second time around It’s no secret that men and women are getting married more than once nowadays. However, with the decision to wed a second or third time there are also the common worries about tradition and proper etiquette. Brides who are walking down the aisle for at least the second time tend to be more mature and ready to take on the world in a more sophisticated manner. Often, they are busy career women barely able to fit a wedding into their schedule. With commitments such as work, children and a personal life, it can be a tricky balancing act to plan a wedding during the prime of your life.

What about the children Many couples nowadays are choosing to have their children be part of the ceremony. For example, sons might play the part of an usher or even a ring bearer. Depending on the age of the children, the daughter can also take part in the ceremony as a flower girl or even a bride’s maid. The bride’s son or daughter might stand next to the bride in a show that the groom is not only marrying the mother, but also acknowledging he is taking the child as his own.

Choosing the right dress and style for you and the wedding party

beauty of the bride. Hemlines are shorter and the colors are often soft and pastel. Overall, dresses tend to be less ornamental with better quality silk or silk satin and the train is not as long. Another trend for a second time bride is a hairstyle donning fresh flowers. Wedding parties also tend to be pared down and attendants are usually allowed to pick their favorite cocktail dress that is within the brides color scheme or theme.

Wedding Trends Smaller, intimate weddings are definitely the norm for second time couples. Simple dinner parties or cocktail receptions are preferred over full-blown affairs and the bouquet and garter toss are absent replaced by having the longest married couple in the room be awarded these items. The wedding invitations are issued from the bride and groom, in third person, without titles. It would read as follows: ane Cook and John Smith request the honor of your presence at their marriage Finally, remember that while you might have been married before it was not to each other. Treat your special day as just that, and keep in mind it is the first day the two of you will spend your life together.

Veils are not a good choice for second time brides as it reflects the innocence of the first time. However, white dresses are no longer taboo. The most important thing is to pick a dress, regardless of the color, that brings out the

Romancing the Mood Something old, something new, something borrowed, something you Today’s options don’t end with the traditional party rental store. A decorating and planning business can also offer chair covers and linens option as well, along with event design. They can help provide floral, tabletop, specialty draping for a dramat ic effect, along with lanterns and columns. Their expertise is working with you to create something special and personal. Whether it’s a simple, yet elegant table centerpiece, to a complete transformation using ceiling chandeliers and draping, these professionals help create an air of individuality by helping incorporate intimate touches throughout the ceremony and reception. These details come through in the decor - everything from lighting to furniture. Eclectic accessorizing throughout your big day affects a warm, close-knit feeling amongst your guests. They can help you select one decorative element to focus on, such as centerpieces. Give each table a homespun, made-withlove feeling by including an object that represent you as a couple. Think: old books (if you’re big readers), records (if you’re into music), or film canisters (if you’re cinephiles). Prefer flowers-only? Miscellaneous bud vases and mason jars let you grow your own garden at each table. These vases and other table decor can be brought from home, borrowed or rented at more and more locations. Local small businesses offer an array of vintage plates, bowls, silverware, teacups and saucers. Although shopping for these items might sound like fun, there are some negative things to consider. How will you store and transport all your finds. Do things need cleaning or repair. Too much work prior, during or immediately after

your wedding can really dampen the overall enjoyment. Eliminate the stress without sacrificing style. It’s better to keep it simple then overwork family and friends. These design and decorating specialists will work within your budget. They have enormous experience and knowledge in the wedding industry. If they don’t have a product, they’ll know where to get it for you. Some companies offer rental for items like fine leather lounges. That’s right; an intimate seating area brought right to you. Couch groupings, which vary in size and style depending on your needs and space, are just the thing for mingling guests who are all danced out. Beyond seating, think about including other furniture to add a comfortable touch here and there. These pieces add to the fashion, but can also serve a function. A decked out dresser makes an inviting dessert table and a spruced up mailbox or bird cage is perfect for collecting cards. Other fun items can also be found like large picture frames and Bride & Groom chairs. Whether used for a dramatic image of the wedding couple or fun interactive images for your guests, it will certainly be remembered by all. In the end, there’s no right or wrong way to go about adding personal touches to yourwedding day. Just know that these decor & event services can really make the process easier, produce a better outcome, and sometimes, even save you money. Many times, the line between event design and decorating to wedding coordination is very small.

Chef Jim Benson Eleven Courses Catering

After years of scouring the globe to gain vast experience with many types of cuisine, Chef Jim Benson launched Eleven Courses Catering. “I wanted to get out there, collaborate with other chefs and be inspired by what I tasted – putting my own spin on it.” Chef Jim was born a (culinary) artist, he’s always had the ability to listen to a song for the first time and then replay it by ear, the same goes with food – it’s like a 6th sense. The world of food is always evolving, Eleven Courses takes several culinary tours around the world and comes back to the kitchen with a fresh perspective and new recipes.

Rouge Fine Catering

Chef Soudry started his training and career as a child working in his parents’ small food business in Marseille. He went on to receive his culinary training in many renowned French restaurants. He worked in some of the most prestigious restaurants in Washington, DC before moving on to develop and operate several restaurant concepts of his own in Baltimore and Boston and now Washington DC. He enjoys cooking Mediterranean and family recipes. Chef Jonathan developed a line of packaged meal products for a Fortune 500 company which were sold nationally. Two of these packaged meal products were awarded the prestigious accolade of being among the 10 best and most innovative new products of the year, on a national level. TIP: Require fresh, fresh, fresh food is critical!

Eleven Course’s mantra is: A Private Chef Approach. “Our approach to catering – fresh, vibrant cuisine, with a focus on designing menus that artfully come full circle from beginning to end – never waivers.

Catered with elegance Selecting the right caterer

Chef Ricardo Bonilla Catering by Uptown

With over 25 years of experience as a professional in the food service industry, Chef Ricardo has become a master of almost every dish. From his training in preparing French cuisine at the 1789 restaurant in Georgetown to perfecting his Chesapeake crab cakes at Catering by Uptown, the display and quality of his food are second to none. Chef Ricardo’s passion for food spans the globe and is evident in both our traditional and multi-cultural menus. From former Presidents, to thousands of brides & grooms – everyone appreciates the care Chef Ricardo takes in his craft.

A professionally catered meal can be the crowning glory of your wedding celebration, so choose your caterer with care. Your options vary depending on your wedding location, so you should definitely think about catering before you book the facility. If you’re renting a restaurant, hotel, yacht, or similar facility, you may have to use their catering service. Some facilities will include catering charges in the rental cost, and some won’t. Many good private catering companies will cater meals at any location. As you investigate these possibilities, determine what extras are included in their charges: table linens, plates, glasses, and crystal, silverware and service pieces. While these are usually included, it is something you will want to confirm in advance, so as not find out on your wedding day. Determine your food budget by deciding how much you will spend on each person. Simply multiply the cost per person by the number of guests. Get in writing which menu and the number of guests your money will cover. Then mentally add an additional 10 percent for overage and 18 to 25 percent for a gratuity, if appropriate. Your caterer will know, from formulas and experience, how much of each item to allow per person. In selecting a caterer, ask for referrals from people who’ve tasted the caterer’s fare and observed their professionalism at work. Many caterers offer a tasting consultation to allow you the opportunity to sample a variety of specialties. If this is available, be sure and take advantage of it.

Fuel your guests 6 delicious ideas

When planning a wedding, the right meal can set the mood and fuel your guests for a night of dancing. Here are six ideas that will make your food more festive and leave everyone satisfied:

1. Healthy is in. Healthy meals can be tasty delights.

2. Go ethnic! Food from around the world is becoming more and more popular at weddings. It’s a great way to get variety into your dinner. It also gives your guests the opportunity to feed their adventurous side.

5. Add a gourmet twist to a comfort food. Who says your meal has to be boring and formal? Take a casual comfort food like mac & cheese and spice it up by adding a gourmet cheese or lobster and a garnish.

6. Have smaller portions, but more courses. This more European style is gaining popularity.

3. Beef: it IS what’s for dinner. Steak is in. Popular are South American style steaks seasoned with chile peppers and sofrito or different salsas and a side of Peruvian potatoes. Steak is also delicious tossed into a gourmet salad or thinly sliced on baguettes.

4. Fondues and Fountains. They’re fun and flavorful, not to mention they add a festive decorative touch to your reception venue. Fondues come in an incredible variety of flavors, everything from creamy veggie to beef to citrus to appease all taste buds. Chocolate and champagne fountains add to the celebratory ambiance during dessert and the wedding toasts. P R E M I E R B R I D E 2 016

Invitation etiquette Introducing the couple It’s worth checking every detail twice to ensure that the first impression you make is a good one. The outer envelope should have a return address on the back flap. Address the front of the envelope according to the following guidelines. • To indicate both parties of a married couple, use “Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Green.” • If every member of a family is invited, write “Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Green and Family.” • If only the older children are included, their names are written below the parents “Miss Erin Green.” • When addressing an unmarried couple living together, use each of their full names “Mr. Reginald Howard and Miss Angelica Thomson.”

• Street names, cities and states should be written out completely without abbreviations. Envelopes should be handwritten in charcoal gray or black ink. Write the guest’s name on the inner envelope and insert the invitation, the RSVP card and the reply envelope with the printed side facing the back flap. Use RSVP cards for a firm guest count and enclosure cards for special arrangements. Ceremony or reception cards invite guests to only one or the other. Pew cards reserve church seating and at-home cards convey your official new name and address. Invitations should be mailed four to six weeks before the wedding, three weeks before at the latest. Mail them earlier if many of your guests are traveling a considerable distance or if the wedding is on a holiday to allow time for travel arrangements.

The chuppah A jewish wedding tradition A chuppah is a tent like structure made with a fabric top and four poles in each corner often carried by attendants during the ceremony. The chuppah itself is representative of the home the Jewish couple will build together. It’s desert origins are reflected in its construction. The roof is a traditional material and poles, instead of walls, that form the sides. The poles are sometimes carried during the ceremony. The tent like design represents that the couple’s home is open to their community. The roof is kept after the ceremony and displayed as a wall hanging. Chuppahs are available through rental companies and florists. Additionally, they are often decorated in the colors of the wedding.

Having fun with photos! A unique idea for your wedding Even though weddings are a testament of very personal love, sometimes the whole day can seem like a cookie-cutter type deal. But there’s almost nothing more personal than a photo, so use those to make your day one of a kind!

Photo Booth

Here’s a fun, crowd-pleasing, party-enhancing idea: rent a photo booth to have at the reception! Your guests will have a great time entering the booth, posing for photos both lovely and silly, and enjoying the black & white or color prints. Put some scissors, gluesticks, pens and scrapbook pages on a table by the booth, for guests to leave one of their photos for you, along with a little note.

Warm and romantic Using live plants Marriages may be “made in heaven,” but most are based on compromise. So usually are your wedding plans. Perhaps the site you’ve chosen for your ceremony and reception does not quite measure up to expectations. Flowers, lighting and table settings help establish a warm, romantic feeling, but maybe you want more. Many plants provide instant decoration for plain or drab rooms - the stately Ficus tree trimmed with small white lights can create an elegant wall treatment. The graceful Areca palm will form an excellent backdrop for photography and a Fern can be used in various applications: individually as a spotlight plant; in a basket holding a ficus tree; or as a leafy addition to any floral arrangements. Flowering plants, bromeliads, or exotic foliage plants provide unlimited possibilities. Just use your imagination. To find a reputable plant company you can ask your florist or talk to friends who have rented plants or attended parties where the plants stood out.

Michelle Miller

410-596-3296 prbymichellemiller@yahoo.com

When you call a plant company, ask about more than just prices. Is the delivery included? What is offered in way of baskets or other decorative containers? Can they show you pictures of other jobs they have already done? Can you see the actual plants you’ll be renting?

www.pureromance.com/michellemiller111092

Most plant rental companies provide a free consultation and some even visit the wedding and reception sites if requested.

Because every girl deserves a fun girls night out!

Well-placed plants can hide the imperfections at your ceremony or reception site, making your special day “Picture Perfect.”

Respond to initial inquiry by couple and schedule an initial meeting where we get to know one another. If we are a “fit.” Meet with the couple to discuss and brainstorm the ceremony. Suggest any unity ceremony rituals and blended family ceremonies. These include but are not limited to sand, rose, wine, unity candles, glass breaking, medallions, blessings, etc. Take all the ideas provided by the couple and write a custom ceremony using custom and non-custom elements.

Be a gracious bride Making it a great day for everyone You may have heard the expression “it’s your day, do it your way.” While this is true, it’s also easy to take this concept too far. Here are a few tips about being a gracious bride: Understand your guests’ perspective. Awkward gaps of time or long distances between the ceremony and reception are difficult for guests. Try to craft your day’s schedule with the guests in mind. Jump on those thank you notes. Guests look forward to hearing if you liked their gift! Write a personalized note and respond as quickly as possible.

Sweet traditions

Katrina’s Sugar Kreation’s http://ksugarkreations.wix.com/http 443.413.2290 | ksugarkreations@gmail.com

Wedding cakes Tradition surrounds the wedding cake, an ancient symbol of fertility and abundance. In Rome, during the first century, wedding cakes were usually made of wheat and were either thrown, crumbled or broken over the bride’s head in one of many symbolic gestures of fertility that were part of the marriage ceremony. Fortunately, today this tradition continues only in the form of throwing rice, birdseed or confetti at the newly married couple. The number of well-wishers at the wedding of a frontier bride could be counted by measuring her cake. Each arriving guest added a layer with applesauce spread in between each one.

Katrina’s Sugar Kreation’s upscale your wedding or special event with elegance and style. Whether it’s your wedding, corporate event, or Baby Shower. Perfect for just about any occasion. We take time and love to create something as special as you are, on your special day.

An old English wives tale says that if an unmarried guest places a piece of wedding cake under her pillow at night then her prospects of finding a partner are greatly increased. Bridesmaids who did the same would dream of their future husbands. Another cake-related tradition is to save the top layer for your first anniversary. Considering that after a year the cake’s flavor may leave something to be desired, many couples forgo freezing their cake and instead have a smaller version baked fresh for their first anniversary. When you and your spouse cut the cake together you are sharing matrimonial sweetness in the same way the ancient Greeks did, while they also believed a sesame-seed cake helped couples multiply.

Wedding colors

All Weddings and Honeymoons SANDALS/BEACHES SPECIALIST

The meaning of what you choose You would think it would be easy to choose the right wedding colors for your big day right? Perhaps you want that periwinkle blue that has been your favorite since you were a little girl. Or what if black is your favorite color, is that appropriate for your wedding color in the middle of August? The wedding colors that you inevitable decide on will play a big part in setting the mood of your wedding and theme as well. For example, a beach wedding might be perfect with natural colors that complement the sea and sky. Overall, when you choose your wedding colors you are also choosing the look and feel of the bridesmaid dresses, the flowers, the invitations and even the look of the ceremony and reception. Start with a base color followed by lighter and darker shades in the same color family. You can also choose two or three colors that complement one another easily. When you do pick the colors for your wedding make sure you can get the bridesmaid dresses in this color as well, even before you begin ordering the other necessities. For flowers, if you must have a certain type then you can work around the flower colors to determine the final color choices. Remember too that the colors you choose, no matter the season, should not clash with the church or banquet facility.

Stress-Free Planning 4 tips to keep you going You’re engaged – hooray! Now the fun begins (you think) of planning a lovely wedding... trying on wedding dresses, registering for gifts, choosing the perfect party favor... fun, fun, fun. Then reality sets in, and you discover that planning a wedding takes an incredible amount of work. It requires making countless decisions, handling thousands of details, juggling endless tasks and errands, and doing it all while also maintaining your relationships, job, life and sanity. What’s a stressed-out bride-to-be to do? We’ve got some suggestions for you!

Start early. Obviously, the more time you have to plan, the more breathing room you have, and the more options you’ll have for wedding vendors.

Stay organized. The two critical elements of staying organized include keep everything together in one assigned location and write everything down. Get help. The very best thing you could do for a stressfree experience (and a relaxing, stress-free wedding DAY) is hire a wedding consultant. Many couples feel that this just ‘isn’t for them’ and yet, without question, it could make the critical difference between having a fun, enjoyable wedding experience, and having a grueling one.

Take breaks. Take regular restorative breaks from wedding planning where you don’t think about, talk about, or work on anything wedding-related. And remember there is life beyond the wedding!

Your chariot awaits A chauffeured limousine Hollywood stars, tycoons, VIPs and you and your groom on your wedding day! A limousine is an elegant element that enhances the festivity of the day. Imagine arriving and departing for your day’s events in grand style. An awesome stretch limousine pulls up; the chauffeur comes around, opens your door, offers his hand, and helps you gracefully enter and exit the carriage. A limousine can transport you, your family or your wedding party from the start of the day to the end. It can pick you up at home, and then drive you to the church, the reception and even to the airport for your honeymoon. Check rates and find out exactly what the cost covers, the time allowed, the type of limousine and the amenities provided. Also determine if a fleet rate is available if you plan to use more than one limo. Discuss your needs with a service consultant at the limousine company, and plan to make your reservations at least four to six months ahead of time to ensure availability.

Ideas by the season Making even the dreariest days beautiful No matter where you live, chances are your wedding weather will be far from perfect. Luckily, a wedding can be cheery even on the dreariest of days as long as you take advantage of everything your season has to offer. For a spring-themed centerpiece that doubles as a favor, have multiple small, pastel-colored vases full of flower bulbs and encourage your guests to bring one home. Seeds and tiny monogrammed flowerpots are also a fun favor. With a lot of kids, bring Easter to your reception and hide the favors or special treats! For summer weddings, go the informal route and serve your meal as a picnic spread or garden-party style. Mini picnic baskets or personalized blankets could then be given as a favor. Don’t shy away from fresh, bright, bold colors for a summer ceremony.

Attendants Gifts, Invitations, & Wedding Accessories.

Fall offers a more rustic feel. Use warm oranges and reds in decorations, and wheat stalks or gourds are beautiful as centerpieces. A fun favor could be making homemade jam or cider for your guests to enjoy. A lthough less popular, winter weddings can be the most cozy because of the warm respite from the bitter cold. Decorations can be full of deep purples, forest greens, ruby reds, icy blues or silver, and use pinecones, holly or poinsettias for centerpieces. Instead of a champagne toast, raise a mug full of hot chocolate or egg nog and send guests home with the mug and some mix of their own. It doesn’t have to be 70 and sunny for the perfect wedding as long as you use Mother Nature to your advantage!

For your local or destination wedding

Grey and Tan tuxedos are stunning along with our other Colored Tuxedos. Or the Sexy Classic black tuxedo. Include an elegant vest and tie/bowtie in an array of colors for a spectacular appearance.

Bridal Sizing The ugly truth Be mindful that when shopping for a gown, you might have to go up a size or two or three depending on the designer. All designers go by a different sizing chart, so you might be a 10 in one company, whereas you might be a 14 in another company, depending on their standards. Be sure to wear your undergarments during your sizing and make sure you have good posture. Posture can affect your measurements, believe it or not. Make sure that whoever is measuring you knows where and how to correctly measure you.If you are inexperienced, consider going to an alterations person, or a bridal shop. Don’t call your measurements into the salon, because if the measurements are not correct, this could affect your gown’s fit, and there might not be time to re-order.

The Vintage Bandwagon What ’s old is new again One of the most popular wedding themes is vintage. Vintage typically refers to a particular harvest or crop of wine, but can also mean pertaining to a high quality past time. In this case, we mean the latter of the two. Vintage wedding themes are taking the wedding industry by storm.

One of the first things to check off your list is a wedding gown, and designers have caught onto the vintage bandwagon. There are tiers of lace on gowns, along with sleeves, and sweet pearl details. Along with strings of pearls adorning bride’s necks, birdcages are making a comeback, as well as bridal caps. Gloves and lace boots are also making their way back onto the wedding scene.

Flowers

You can indulge in a gorgeous brooch bouquet, which can be solely made up of vintage brooches from your grandmother, or from an antique store.

Reception

You can be taken away in a vintage car, like a Rolls Royce, or swept away by carriage. You might find yourself in a barn type wedding, adorned with chandeliers and mason jars all over. Mason jars are extremely popular right now, and can be adorned with lace, or have pictures in them showing family. Don’t be afraid to find some hat boxes to capture the vintage era you are going for in your wedding.

Their services can help you create a natural beauty that will look great in your wedding pictures without looking painted. The best prelude to beauty is a facial, which most salons can provide. In your final week of preparation, a facial cleanses your skin to help create a healthy foundation for application. A manicure is also a finishing touch well worth the time, especially if growing long, strong nails is not among your talents. Nail tips look most natural when applied by a professional, and will help your own nails grow along with your marriage.

Wedding planners An affordable luxury A wedding consultant is an expensive luxury. That’s the myth. Here’s the reality. You’re busy. You work. Your fiancé works. A wedding consultant can save you both time and money, and reduce the stress of planning a wedding.

panies offer coordinating services as part of their full-service packages. While these services can be very useful, they can also be limited to a small list of vendors. A professional wedding consultant will give you individualized attention and provide unbiased opinions on protocol and style.

Experienced consultants have access to hundreds of wedding professionals and specialty services. By utilizing these contacts, they can provide creative and unique recommendations, tailored to suit both your style and your budget.

You can hire a consultant to assist you in planning your entire wedding, or to simply help orchestrate a rehearsal and wedding day. Fees may be charged hourly at a flat rate or on a commission basis, depending on the consultant and the services you require. Most consultants offer a variety of packages and a la carte services.

Their expertise will ensure that you get what you want in terms of quality, quantity and service. Vendors usually give consultants the best possible price considerations in hopes of repeat business.

Although friends and relatives can certainly assist with wedding plans, leave the details to a professional who can anticipate mishaps, troubleshoot when necessary and provide you the affordable luxury of a stress-free wedding.

Green Wedding Tips Eco-friendly with a cost saving twist If you wish to dine by candlelight, use soy or beeswax candles, which are greener to produce than crude oilbased paraffin candles. Buy a beautiful used dress from the Brides Against Breast Cancer movement (bridesagainstbreastcancer. org). Proceeds fund breast cancer research. Also consider donating your gown to this organization after your wedding. Give guests tree saplings: the earth could use more trees! Other earth-friendly favors include a handmade paper bookmark with wildflower seeds that your guests can use or plant, or a small envelope of your favorite wildflower or vegetable seeds. Or skip the favors, and instead make a donation to your favorite earth-friendly non-profit organization in honor of your guests.

Consider potted plants for your centerpieces. They can be given away to guests after the wedding, or you could plant them in your yard to enjoy for years... a growing, living memory of your special day. Use handmade paper with flower seeds embedded for your wedding invites... your guests can plant your invite after the wedding – the ultimate in recycling. Great green gifts for your bridal party are non-consumptive options such as gift certificates for a massage or car detailing, tickets to a play, concert or sporting event, or useful, consumable gifts such as wine, soap, fair trade coffee, or local specialty foods. As a new couple, consider investing in socially responsible companies when planning for your retirement and financial future.

Wedding Day style Quirky, elegant and unforgettable So you’ve found the guy, found the dress, but you really want your bridal look to scream YOU!? Consider adding one or all of the following suggestions into your bridal look on your wedding day.

Personalize it:

Have a patch made, or even a piece of the gown embroidered with your custom monogram with your new initials and wedding day on it. Make the embroidery blue, so that you have the “something blue” covered. You can also add an image if you would like, instead of a monogram, like a heart or other picture that is special to you. Have the patch or other insignia added to the inside of your gown, this will be something that you will see, but it adds that extra touch of you, on your wedding day. Wearing a veil? Consider having the bottom of the veil embroidered with white or ivory thread, it is simply unforgettable.

Have a Surprise!:

You might want to think about adding a fun layer of fabric under your gown. Have the fabric sewn on the inside of the gown, and get ready for a photo op! If your gown isn’t full enough, you might consider having a crinoline dyed to your favorite color.

Your Shoes:

Gone are the days of plain ivory heels, and enter a whole new world of shoes for your wedding day! From cowboy boots to bridal sandals, brides are finding shoes that appeal to them, and express their personality. Have fun with this one, and make sure you get shoes you can wear over and over again!

Not Just White:

You might be in love with the color pink, why don’t you wear a pink wedding gown? Color is very in style right now, and you might consider wearing a dress in your favorite color.

Wedding Music The sound of romance Ceremony music: When weighing your options for ceremony musicians, consider your vision (instrumental or vocalist) and your wedding’s style and venue. Think back to past weddings you’ve attended: What did/didn’t you like? Once you and your fiancé have some ideas in mind, check out local musicians. Narrow down your options, then arrange to hear them live. Once hired, your musicians will often be able to offer song suggestions. Cocktails and dinner music: Conversation is key during cocktails and dinner, so the tunes should set the mood, but not intrude. Use your ceremony’s musicians, reception’s DJ or band, or hire entirely different musicians – just make sure they keep the melodies on the softer side.

DJ • MC • Lighting • Dance • Photobooth

Reception and dancing music: First, ask yourself: Band or DJ? Live music gives the evening a festive energy; the key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. A DJ will offer an almost infinite variety of music. The golden rule of reception music: Whether band or DJ, make sure they play a little something for everyone. The nitty gritty: Make sure the ins and outs of your agreement with your musicians are very clear and in writing. This includes payment, start and end times, fees for playing overtime, etc. Communicate with your band or DJ so that they can familiarize themselves with the reception space, its limitations, and other important technical details.

Be a great groom 4 tips to pulling it off Get involved. Maybe discussing floral arrangements and seating charts makes your eyes glaze over... That’s fine! Figure out what DOES interest you, and get involved. The entertainment, the food, the cake, the transportation, the honeymoon... Pick your areas, own them, make them happen. Keep the bride in the loop and be open to her input – she’ll love knowing she’s not doing this wedding thing all by herself. Speak up. Be an active team member by sharing your opinion, voicing your support, and offering words of encouragement and appreciation. It’s also important that you be the primary contact with your family. These are important skills not only during the wedding planning, but forever!

No bashing. It’s quite likely that your stressed out bride-to-be will complain bitterly at moments about her dear family and close friends... It happens to the best of us. Listen to her, be empathetic to her distress, but do NOT join in on the complaining. She’ll get over her stress, but she may remember, and feel bad about, your negative comments. Again, for best relationship results, remember this tip always. Show your romantic side. Share your deepest, loving feelings– she wants to hear them! Here are a few ideas: write her a letter that she can open the morning of the wedding. Have her favorite flowers delivered the week before the wedding along with a supportive note. Plan a special, relaxing evening for the two of you in the weeks before the wedding, where she can escape for awhile from the wedding planning stress. Ahhhh.... Sigh.

On-screen presentation Family memories Get involved. Maybe discussing floral arrangements and A high-tech twist to special events is beginning to make its appearance at wedding receptions across the country. It’s onscreen audio-visual presentations featuring none other than the bride and groom. Quite popular, it’s becoming a common component of wedding day festivities. You may choose to share the story of your romance by selecting photographs of you and your fiance when you first met, as you fell in love, and as you planned the wedding. Another option is to collect photographs of both the bride and groom growing up. Friends and family members will enjoy being included in your special day, since they often appear in pictures with the bride and groom as they grow from childhood to school age to young adulthood.

Most video companies have the capability for this type of production. They synchronize the images accompanied by music of your choice and create a multi-image video to be presented at your reception, rehearsal dinner, or both. The length and cost of this production is determined by the number of photographs you decide to use. The price will depend on the location of your event, the size of screen(s) needed and the amplification requirements. On screen presentations are a wonderful way of introducing the bride and groom to each other’s family and friends. Consider having copies made for parents, grandparents, and loved ones that are unable to attend your wedding.

The perfect vendor What every bride should expect One of the most unique customer service models you will ever find is the wedding industry. Here, you have dozens of businesses hired months in advance to complete an individual task that will be carried out on a particular day. What makes this more interesting is that there can be no do-overs on your wedding day. It is like a “live” stage play that will be orchestrated and presented in real time. We have all heard the saying “beauty is only skin deep”. It implies what you see on the surface is only part of the equation. The same is true in the wedding business. The photos you expect from your photographer or the music you discuss with your DJ is important, but only represents one level of service expectation. The products and service provided is important – so too is the manner in which they are delivered!

Romantic comedies and reality TV have conditioned us to think that weddings are this stressed-out event that tears people apart and reduces the strongest people to a fetal position. It doesn’t have to be that way. Look carefully at training, qualifications and talent and don’t be afraid to ask for an example of how well they work with other vendors. Look at how you will be treated as a customer, how quickly they return your phone calls and respond to your inquiries. Follow your instincts and select vendors who care as passionately about you and the success of your event as they do about their own vocation. Contacting vendors listed in this publication is a good place to start since your local publisher is extremely involved and knowledgeable in your local bridal market.

A UNIQUE AFFAIR

Your Furry Friends Including your entire family on your day

Full & Partial Planning Coordinating Design & Decor Rentals Invitations Accessories & Make-up Application 410-596-6280 | www.auniqueaffair.net | facebook.com/auniqueaffair

For pet lovers, having their furry friend present at the wedding is a must have, and for good reason. Pets come into your life, and become part of the family. When getting married, you want your furry friend there to be with you, and they also make for some great photo opportunities. The Pros: Dressing your pet in a wedding dress or tuxedo is probably one of the cutest things in the world. Not to mention, walking them down the aisle and seeing how sweet they look! Pets can provide a comic relief, especially if your pet has a funny personality. If having a small outdoor ceremony, this might be the best situation for your pet. They are free to roam about, (with a designated handler) and can relieve themselves (hopefully before the wedding!) The Cons:Pets are unpredictable, and you don’t know how your pet will react in a situation with two hundred people. You also need to think about if you are going to pick the pet up, will their paws stain your dress? Keep that in mind. If you are the type of bride that is very traditional, you might want to steer clear of having your friend at the ceremony, since you might not know what they will do. If you decide to have your pets present on your wedding, keep in mind that some guests might be allergic, and some guests might not even be animal lovers. Have a designated handler to keep watch of the dog throughout the day as well as take them home that evening. You might want to have your pet present for the ceremony only, and then have the handler take them home directly after pictures.

You want your wedding to be perfect. You don’t want to worry about what you would do if the unthinkable happened. Wedding insurance covers a wide range of damage and mishaps. If the bride’s dress or groom’s tuxedo is damaged or lost, or if the rings disappear, you can get repair or replacement cost for them. If severe weather forces you to postpone your wedding you can get reimbursement for non-recoverable expenses. If your wedding photographs are damaged or lost, insurance can cover the cost to have the photographs retaken. Damaged gifts can be repaired or replaced. This is just a small list of what you can be protected against. Wedding insurance not only protects, it is also extremely affordable. It can cost as little as $160. After the big day, the gifts your guests gave you to start your journey can be insured with Renter’s Insurance. And let’s not forget about the first home you purchase to raise your family. Not only will you want to protect the home itself with a Homeowner’s policy, but also make sure that you will be able to pay your mortgage in the event of the unforeseen. Life Insurance and savings plans can give you and your future children some security for your future. Contact a local independent agent to find out more so that you can rest easy for this day and all the days to follow.
