Women ON TOP

March marks Women’s History Month, a commemoration established back in the late 1970s to celebrate the often-overlooked contributions that women have made to, well, everything. Fastforward nearly 50 years, and the progress is palpable. Although inequalities still exist (think: the salary gap, the burden of childcare), today you’d be hardpressed (and downright ignorant) to overlook the influence of women in realms our grandmothers might not have dreamed possible. This month’s issue shines a spotlight on women who make Miami what it is today—and those who are using their influence to create an even brighter tomorrow.

“Everyday She-Roes,” beginning on page 56, profiles four such dynamos. From advocating for the arts to crafting nutritious fare to fighting breast cancer to feeding souls (and celebs), these Magic City marvels are definitely women to watch.

Designer and Miami resident Carolina Kleinman is a female founder doing things her own way. Her brand, Carolina K, eschews the lure of fast fashion. For Carolina, it’s all about preserving the integrity of indigenous artisans (who, it’s no surprise, are primarily women) and committing to eco-friendly materials in everything from the clothing she produces to the hangers in her stores. Check out her story in “The Force of Fashion” on page 72.

And don’t miss this month’s installment of The Edit on page 30 to shop our editors’ picks from our favorite women-led businesses across South Florida.

As a woman (and a native Miamian) I couldn’t imagine a more fitting issue to mark my new role as Aventura’s editor in chief. I spent my formative years in Miami, and though I’ve lived in a number of places in my life, the city has never left my heart. I look forward to sharing the best of the area with you each month. Here’s to new beginnings!
