AROUND TOWN SISTRUNK 2.0

Fans of Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery in Flagler Village can sing praise with the recent expansion dubbed Sistrunk Station. “Sistrunk Station is a new generation of office and workspace that gives entrepreneurs, artists, and businesses an opportunity to enhance their work life by creating a complex to work and play,” says Steven D’Apuzzo, founder of Society 8 Hospitality Group, Sistrunk Station, and Sistrunk Marketplace. Now doubled in size to 42,000 square feet, the complex offers something for everyone, from business lofts to a place to work out, plus incredible food experiences. Here are three things not to miss. FLI: What’s the goal of the program?

Taintor: Sea Lab was born from the idea of inspiring students to be problem-solvers to local sustainability challenges. Back in 2019, the Greater Fort Lauderdale business community was waking up to the effects of sea level rise but was challenged by the current costly methods for seawall construction. We thought our kids could provide out-of-thebox thinking in designing and testing in real tidal conditions economically sustainable seawalls that would help our neighbors and businesses protect their property and way of life here in Fort Lauderdale and possibly beyond.

Who can participate in Sea Lab?

The students here on campus using Sea Lab will be from ages 5 to 13. However, our partnership with local universities and other schools will mean our age group will be from 5 to adulthood. Students will be learning about how to engineer effective barriers to sea level rise and tidal flooding, water quality and how to measure it, identification of microplastics and their sources as well as forever chemicals, to name a few.

How do you see this program expanding in the future?

We would love for this to be a model for other schools around the world to tackle their own local sustainability challenges. We have plans to invite science teachers and administrators to learn how to do this at their schools and help them launch their own efforts.

Sistrunk now sits as a 42,000- squarefoot complex in which patrons can shop, dine, work, and play.

EDUCATION Talent Pool

As contaminants in public waters continue to threaten our community, one South Florida school has created a program to train the next generation of sustainability leaders to combat this crisis. It’s called Sea Lab, a 20-by-20-foot tidal pool that floods daily with the rising of tides in the Middle River waterway system. FLI caught up with Spencer Taintor, head of school at Saint Mark’s Episcopal School, to learn how young scientists are using the lab. (saintmarks.com) —M.P.
