This homeowner’s request for eye-popping hues of unexpected color was a welcome change for designer Nina Williams, given the “50 shades of gray” palette that seems to dominate the current marketplace. It also required a delicate hand in composing the space.

“I had to be very careful with the color, because these hues are so saturated and bright that they have to be tempered with neutrals and earth tones so the viewer doesn’t get overwhelmed by it,” Williams explains. “I kept the walls and large pieces—like sofas, rugs, and window treatments—white and gray. We then selected original art pieces for each room and based the rest of the design on the colors in the paintings.”

In the living room, this meant emerald green chairs, a vibrant floral arrangement, and a showstopping turquoise wood veneer chandelier.

“I can honestly say I never would have conceived of or designed such a fun space had my client not been there to inspire it,” Williams adds. “I truly hope more people will abandon their gray safe zones after they see what color can do.” (ninawilliamsinteriors.com)
