EDITORIAL COLUMN Education is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. It makes an individual develop personally, socially as well as economically. It helps us to do our daily life activities in the best possible ways. A good education is when it could increase a child's creativity help them enjoy studying and help them through education in their future. John Amos Comenius (Father of Modern Education), he developed a philosophy called pansophism, which emphasized political unity, religious reconciliation, and cooperation in education. It is related to education to everyday life and called for a systematic relationship to be developed for all knowledge. "Children ought to be dearer to parents than gold and silver, than pearls and gems, may be discovered from a comparison between both gifts of God; for‌Gold and silver are fleeting and transitory; children an immortal inheritance. ~ Jan Amos Comenius" Education is perhaps the pivotal force behind human civilization. It serves as a universal bridge connecting all human minds from genius to ordinary. It provides an opportunity to access the knowledge and mysteries of the universe to every human mind equally. It is an unconditional academic environment. Our annual magazine "The Harvest" is a collection of exclusive ideas and experiences from the team of faculty and budding students.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A school that admits students without screening for academic brilliance or basic skills, yet produces great results must be the cynosure of parents struggling to find a quality school for their children. It is not easy to teach and train children for life’s hard tests when their financial and educational backgrounds vary. But in Podar International School the best teaching practices adopted ensure steady rise in the caliber of every student. The opportunities they get to explore their own potential are far more than one expects. We don’t believe in producing book worms, bereft of basic life skills, but produce such students who are smart and confident. Various functions and events lined up through the year give them chance to grab opportunities and shine. Parents are witness to such occasions and realize the school’s role in making it happen. Education is not a business at Podar. It is a commitment to make children literate and to make the literate aware. In the process we are opening new branches of Podar International School across the country. All Podar Schools complement one another and share their wisdom to spread good practices. Parents can take a transfer from one Podar School to another without hassle. The common Uniform, Books, Examinations etc. across the country ease the task of adjusting to a new school and children feel homely, wherever they go, as long as it is Podar again. Transparency is the key to our success. We follow rules applicable with all humility both in the education and transport system.

100 not out... It has been my great privilege this year to work with the Leadership and Teachers of Podar International School (CIE) at Kalyan. I have notched up more than 100 planning meetings, teaching observations and training sessions from February 2019.... and my innings is not yet over! Previously I had spent 33 years in Education, including 15 as a Principal and Consultant in UK Schools, with ongoing work alongside the Podar Education Network since 2012 and I was delighted to be asked to support Podar Cambridge Schools in this academic year. We have been working together to ensure that the provision for teaching and learning at Kalyan CIE continues to meet the high standards expected by Cambridge Assessment and that lessons are engaging, active, collaborative and focused on clear learning objectives. I have enjoyed working with students in all Grades, witnessing their academic and social development during the year and have appreciated the opportunity to be involved in a range of events at the school. Aristotle said that 'Excellence is not an ACT, but a HABIT'. I remain committed along with the school staff - to ensuring that we deliver consistently high standards of education all day, every day

Camping trip Once a man wished to go for camping, so he went to the nearest forest and sent up a tent, a warm bonfire and then slept in the tent after putting off the fire. The next morning to his surprise there were many kids outside the tent playing around, one of them was flying like a kite, the other was playing with a football, and the other ne was having snacks on his chair-table which was not present on the previous night when the man came by, also one of the kids fell off a trampoline and still seemed to be happy. There was also a dog, who seemed to just sit there and wasn’t doing nothing, the man didn’t know what to do, so he started questioning himself if he came to right place and where does these kids come from. After a while, he thought it was a dream and went back and slept in the tent. He saw that those bags were all over the place and that the bonfire was burning, he again got surprised and pretend it as a bad dream. Then he saw some material of children on the ground and no one seemed to use it so he picked it up. As he did, he saw a bear coming his way. He knew he was not a super hero but wanted to do something, in the end this al was a dream in reality. Rashida Grade 7

Healthy Food Habits To Boost Up Your Metabolism Some of the ways in which you could stay fit and along with that also boost or kick start your metabolism. Busy lives, busy schedule makes our lives just like computational robots and leading to many health consequences and disorders the lives of people in cities is the way too more scheduled and hectic as compared to the lives of village as their lives are a way to active and sporty. A fit and healthy person should be able to climb a few stairs and run easily. There are also many demerits of being severely overweight which leads to negative health consequences.
An individual must make sure that he consumes nutrients in a proportional amount, ones food/meal must include food that is rich in vitamins, minerals, fats, protein, carbohydrates, fibre and water, people who lack these nutrients are most likely to develop a nutritional deficiency disease. The Scary Trek It was a normal day at school. The teacher stepped in and announced that tomorrow was a school field trip and we are going to trek on the plateaus. We were jumping around like monkeys. The next day, we packed our bags and left for schools. At 7:00AM sharp we left the school in enormous buses. When we arrived , a guide stopped us and explained us the safety precautions. When I looked up on the sign… It said ‘SCARY WOODS!!!’ We all were terrified and we started to worry. We had a doubt that the guide was acting very strange. He started to show us around and we saw red rocks, burnt grass…. Everything was scary!!! We poor 6th graders were scared of this place and the tour guide just smiled at us in a demonish manner. We all started to think that this guide was a demon. We started to notice that our teachers were also disappearing. We all made a plan. When we reached the main area, we didn’t go in. We let the guide go in and we stayed out and we ran. On the way we saw our teachers unconscious and the good thing was that we brought the medicine. We cured them and ran with our teachers back to school.

A LIFE OF A TURTLE It was a warm summer afternoon, the expanse of the beach invited me with open arms. Kids were running about in open sand. Alas! They have legs which I had not. I came across a fisherman, who was dragging something along the sand. As I laboriously reached him, I could see him dragging a large turtle cruelly. I could almost see my legs hurting when I could see his legs bleeding. I looked imploringly at my father praying to god that he could intervene. I was lucky that day. Maybe the gods also wanted to be with turtles. My father said” hello! Where are you taking the turtle?” in a loud voice. The fisherman in a rude tone retorted “To sell, of course!” “people eat its meat as delicacy.” It sends a cold shiver down my shine. I again looked at my father. My father understood that I was begging him to save the poor creature. Somehow, my father said “why don’t you sell it to me ?”. the fisherman said “ what will you do of this wretched creature?” “I’m sure you don’t eat turtle meat.” My father said it’s none of your business?’ “ I’ll pay you hundred rupees.” I could see the gleam of money in fisherman’s eyes. But greed overtook common sense. He reported “200 rupees and not a paisa less.” I knew my father wouldn’t spend 200 rupees just for a turtle . it was his week’s income. We were not well to do. But my father was a kind and determined person. With a stone will, he retorted back” if you don’t give that thing to me, I’ll call the forest officials. He is my brother you know.” He lied. The gleam couldn’t escape the fisherman’s eyes. He was worried that he might have to go to jail for selling a rare animal, that to for its meat. He said “ok! give me 200 rupees.” My father said” I will not give you a paisa more.

We took the turtle home. I applied some turmeric paste in his wound, as my mom told it was the best healer. Suddenly I was jolted to hear someone say “ thank you”. It was only me and turtle home. I thought I was crazy. Again I heard someone say “thank you my friend.” Now I was sure something was wrong with me. I ran to the next room and went to bed. The next day when I to the turtle and to my surprise I could hear him saying “good morning” I screamed and called my mom. I told her everything; and as a reply I could see her puzzled face. I took her to the turtle and told the turtle to repeat what he had said to me. Next she told “ if you again try pranking me like this, you would surely get some thrashing. After ma went, the turtle said “ why did you tell your mom?” I said “why didn’t you speak in front of her?” it said “ only you understand my language .” I said “but you speak English” “how come you speak in English?” when you grow old and have travelled the seven seas, you would also know many languages my friend.” I replied “ you called me a friend but how could I know who you are?” It said “ ok ! I’ll tell my life story!” He said “ I was born in the sands and I could see the wide expanse of the sea welcoming me with open arms I could see many of my brothers also many predators like eagles, foxes, crabs, and others. I hurried to the sea and took a sigh of relief. I saw 4 of my brothers dead! The next moment I saw a huge shark gobbling my other brothers. Now! I was all alone, alone in never-ending sea.

VACATION IN A FOREIGN DESTINATION This was the moment, when I was just standing, like a statue, just to admire the beach, just out of a picture right before my eyes, well, here it is, I am in Koh Samui, Thailand. This an island situated in Thailand. This was one of the foreign destination places I wanted to go, before my busy, boring life begins. The moment was the best, the people, golden sand, and the clear sky. I am going to have a fun of a life time. I was on the beach, in my sundress, just walking and walking, without knowing any direction. Just walking there made me feel like walking right to the heavens. I was humming, songs that just came in my suddenly. Then I started to smell roses, I wandered around and saw a humble café. It was lit with bright and beautiful fairy lights, with relaxing violin and piano playing. I went in, and ordered tea, it was rose tea. It was so nostalgic, but also a little bittersweet, as I remembered my, carefree childhood, which I would want to live once more. I then went out of the café, bid the owner a bye, and started walking to the stairs, as the beach’s coast was ended. I took a local taxi to reach to my vacation house. This first day of vacation went very well, what more was left to end this 1st day perfectly, was authentic Thai food. There was this good restaurant, where I could eat. Eating it, I was in paradise, the taste was heavenly. This I could say was the best start of my vacation. As, I had I good dinner, I was ready for my second day to start, I was impatiently excited, so much that I couldn’t even blink my eyes to sleep. At last the day 2 to came for may to have even more fun than yesterday. Visit monuments, taste various delicacies, and do heart-racing activities.

At first I went to Wat Phra Yai, to see the ever so spoken landmark, the big Buddha, enriched with heavenly shrines, and beautifully ornate sculptures, which looked very beautiful, I didn’t even have words to sew, to praise the makers. The temples were very traditional, and held a very spiritual feeling. The other places was same as Wat Phra Yai, but with more of surreal, and pure feeling of godliness. The one thing that differed from the previous place, this place was, Wat Plai Laem. I also went to its national marine park. My god, it was such a beautiful place. Clear sea and golden sand, much relaxing. And also a great place where everything is perfect if you want to dine very well under the full moon, Koh Hagan. Its so much fun there. It was the starting of my 3rd day of vacation, which was the second last, I was going to enjoy with joy, so I end this day with a lot of memories, and the things that I never once tried. I tried Para gliding, at the cliff of the beach where my hotel is. It was a breathtaking sight, I felt all my stress melt away, and felt like bird, who flew freely with his wings, in glory. Then I went to snorkeling. The ocean was so very clear, unlike the seas at my home country. I was thankful of the instructor helping, or otherwise I would have drowned. I enjoyed my fourth day relaxing at spa, and walk through the beaches, once again. I also went to kayaking, and it was so thrilling. That feeling was something that I had never imagined in this stressful life of mine. I finally was happy, as I was doing the things I never did, thing I learned, and people I met during this vacation. I can never forget this one adventurous and learning vacation.

DO TEST SCORES DETERMINE INTELLIGENCE? 'You failed the test, you don't know anything!' This might seem like any ordinary, grammatically and completely correct sentence, right? Wrong. This might be considered absolutely alright by some people, but along with facts, science and evidence, even I support the idea of this being a completely meaningless sentence. Not emphasising particularly on this sentence, but on each and every word, sentence and person who believes that the result of examinations and tests can actually predict one’s intelligence. Intelligence is not confined in swallowing a textbook, vomiting it out on a test paper and scoring full marks. It spreads wider than the widths of our books and our ability to route-learn its content. Intelligence in my opinion, is having the ability to think, to make right decisions for oneself and to tackle real life problems better than algebraic ones. Tests and examinations, in today’s world, measure how much one can torture himself with sleepless nights of mugging up and express that struggle on the test paper. According to me, the main cause of this misconception is because people have the wrong view for the meaning of 'intelligence’ which has been passed down centuries and eventually woven it’s way into our education system. We have all been bombarded with this common view that an ‘A’ is the class topping most intelligent student out there and an 'F' is a failure, both at school and in life. However it turns out that the preferred class toppers may turn out to be achievers in streams of doctors, accountants, engineers and various professions but the students considered 'dull' in school are the ones who introduce our world to the amazing technological developments, advancements and inventions. Creative thinking beyond horizons set by textbooks is the key into further development and new ideas are the colours our grey world needs to be
PODAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (CIE), KALYAN
ISSUE - 9
filled with. These colours are provided by those colourful minds who seek a world beyond monochromatic textbooks. This is proven by some of our school ideals like Benjamin Franklin, Abe Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Bill Gates and of course the great Albert Einstein who probably never excelled a test, but definitely excelled at life.
The world is steadily advancing towards the biggest revolution after the industrial revolution that is artificial intelligence. In a fast changing world, human effort is minimised by robots and at a certain point, the only significant job left for humans shall be innovation and inventions; all of which requires new ideas and creativity. At that point, young adults would be forced to look past grades and focus on the greater good. If students are taught that their intelligence is defined by grades at an early age then their thinking capacity will remain limited as they won't be motivated to think beyond the words in the books, possibly causing unemployment in the future, all these factors require great consideration before deciding a student's 'worth'. It's important to understand that a student's test is judged by the extent to which it meets the teacher's expectations, not by their capability. There can be a considerable difference between what is expected and a brighter or different thinking, doesn't necessarily mean that the student's perception is wrong. One may see the glass half full, and the other, half empty; neither of them are wrong. After all, life is all about perspective.

Harvard studies suggest that the biggest paths to success are self-control and emotional health. When did we learn that by getting a perfect score? In fact, this rat-race for scores undermines both. Of course education is a necessity, but what's even greater is true life-long learning. Judging children on the basis of their test scores only demotivates them leading to depression, and it isn’t worth sacrificing the health or risking lives of those young minds who are capable of going down in history; this can be done by any and every student, provided they are given the right kind of motivation and support. To all the parents, teachers, mentors and also the students who consider themselves incapable because of their scores: Topping your exams, getting into a good university, getting a reputed job and working everyday for years until you retire and die is mere surviving. Accepting challenges, taking risks and fighting through obstacles is living. There is quite a lot of difference. Not everyone is born the same, and neither should we try to change them. Stop burdening students with the pressure of their scores. It’s not right to tell them that they're losers because they did not top in class. Give them the freedom to fly, they shall reach great heights once the boulders are lift off their wings and make everyone proud. Let's not let anymore dreams get burnt inside slammed textbooks. Intelligence is something eternal and infinite, it cannot be measured. Intelligence lies in realising and accepting that knowledge is vast and cannot be contained. It holds a lot more power than a test paper with tick marks on every route-learned answer. True education, knowledge, and life is way more than this. Securing a career is dependent on life decisions and life decisions are not dependent on exam scores. This is simply something that everyone needs to remember. So next time you score less, work on understanding the concept better and fixing the

mistake rather than doubting your worth. That's what would prove your intelligence. Yashika Ramchandani Grade 10

Reading beyond the textbooks There is an old proverb which says, “Books are our friends for life.” Give it a thought and you will discover that books are the most important and valuable record of our world. "Reading is an extremely important skill. It is by reading that you learn much of what you need to know for your different school subjects. The aim is not only to increase fluency and develop language skills, but also to cultivate an enjoyment of reading. Since this is reading for pleasure, the learners work independently, selecting texts they want to read and reading at their own pace. Reading different types of Resources beyond the textbook enable you to connect students’ learning to their own experiences and contemporary events outside your classroom, and create opportunities for you to find out the knowledge that students are bringing to the classroom. Resources from reference books, newspaper, radio or television provide topics that are current and are likely to be interesting for students. Carefully planned lessons using these resources can support your students in developing critical thinking skills. Using resources beyond the textbook also allows students to experience how English is used outside the classroom and to engage with authentic contemporary language. The examples in textbooks are often from literary sources with older styles of language. You could also focus on pronunciation, grammar, intonation and literary appreciation today in the corporate world, nobody is hired solely on the basis of high grades or percentages acquired in school! FRIENDS AND FRIENDSHIP Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods." These words of the great thinker and father of western philosophy, Aristotle, are an eye opener to the introvert persons, especially to those who propose to live alone or in isolation. The leader poet of New Verse, W.B. Yeats goes a step further to say that, "Think where my glory most begins and ends. And say my glory was I have such such friends". Prem Chand, the great Hindi novelist, lays some guidelines for the persons who want friends or for the matter of that he gives some norms to be observed while entering into friendship. For friendship, it is not necessary that they are not of the same age, nor that they follow the same vacation or belong to the same profession. For Friendship, one thing is indispensable and that in their way of thinking. Then he concludes with the remark that "the building of friendship is erected on the foundation of identical thoughts" While making a friend one should make sure which qualities he expects in his friend and also if he/ she possesses them or not. If the answer is in the negative. Then he/she must develop those qualities before going in for friendship. That means, before making friends one should rule of one's angularities and try to develop the qualities of amiability and adjustment. The true friends are expected to partake the pleasures, pains and sorrows of each other. In case otherwise the bonds of friendship are likely to break, before they come into existence. To emphasize once

again, adjustment is a must between friends - which is the process by which harmonious relationship can be attained. You will do well to remember, the above way of life should be reciprocal, as friendship is not one way traffic. To complete the expectation of a friend, I would like to add these words of Elbert Hubbard - "A friend is someone, who knows all about you and loves you just the same." A word of warning will not be out of place in this regard. In a person's life, there are some occasions, when to keep appearances and maintain privacy, one has to observe some reservations. A true friend will show due respect for them and allow with grace his/her counterpart to have his/her full freedom. There are the words to keep always in your mind." "Friendship is constant in all other things, Save in the office and affairs of love. Therefore all hearts in love use their over tongues. "(William Shakespeare) Extrovert persons make friends more easily, because they are of pleasant disposition and get mixed with all sorts of persons. They try to behave in a way which the persons around and before them would like in short, their personality is polished and behavior well civilized. As a psychologist has very aptly said- so long as there is no dearth of moisture in your eyes, there would be no dearth of friends for you. To make friends one has to be a person of sweet tongue and also not assertive. The sweeter the tongue, the more non-assertive one is, the less resistance he finds in life with the result that life becomes a smooth going affair. The more adjusting one's nature or temperament is the more

able he is to make friends. Let us take an example of nature. Cuckoo is always welcomed, as she has a sweet and melodious voice. On the other hand, the crow's hard voice is despised by everyone. You may not give sugar to a person, but you can talk to him with a sugar, like sweet tongue. One more thing which brings about friendship and makes it stable is to accept the fact that you are not perfect or fault less. Then you must learn to overlook the faults of others and consider everyone as good or as bad as yourself. If you treat on equal level even those whom you consider persons of low intelligence, this would project your image favorably and earn you sympathy from all quarters. An occasion may arrive when some such person may be of help to you. In case you behave or all otherwise, persons of this class, which is not worth your level, may create trouble for you, when you are put in some tight corner. Keep in mind what Samuel Thomson has written - "If a man does not make new acquaintance as he advances in life, he will soon find himself left alone. A man should keep the friendship in constant repair.

A BAG OF RICE Pundit Vishwanath sang the last hymn in his high nasal voice, the bell gyrating in his left hand and the old book open at the appropriate page. The book was a much-thumbed paperback, its covers splattered with vermillion and it was rather thin for the deference it demanded of its readers. The spine had been stitched together at two places with thread. But all this did not affect the respect paid to it by its listeners and readers alike. Pundit Vishwanath was a tall man, fair and averagely built. His hair had begun to grey but the ones sprouting from his ears were surprisingly jet black. His glasses sat low on his long, thin nose. The greying eyebrows shook time and again from the strain of reading the small print. His eyes were dark and moist from all the smoke from the little fire he had lit so ceremoniously at the beginning of the Puja. ‘Hold this in your right hand’, he commanded his host and benefactor thrusting a grain of rice at him. Brijmohan Prajapati had invited him to bless the occasion of digging a well on his plot of land. The water table had fallen drastically and the pump from his existing well could not provide the water for his crops. A wealthy farmer, he had got an engineer from the city to oversee the digging of this new well that will have a submersible pump, the first in the village. The rains had failed and the village was one of many in the district on the verge of draught. Water was scarce and so were the basic commodities. The prices of food had skyrocketed and the cattle were dying for lack of fodder.

The small party was squatting under a tree and one could see a geometric shape traced by flour and turmeric powder on the ground. Pundit Vishwanath and Brijmohan sat on low planks with their heads covered with new towels. ‘Now pour a spoon of ghee in the fire’. Brijmohan was appropriately reverential and said the correct words when prompted by the Pundit. To the accompaniment of mantras he put the sacrificial offerings into the fire whenever Vishwanath told him to. The smell of burning ghee and incense and fresh marigolds, bought from the city, filled the air. A bald dog, attracted by all this, came over and shooed by the children stood at a safe distance and watched. The ceremony was over. A sharp and long blast from the conch shell and Vishwanath started to wrap the tattered book in the piece of red cloth and then tied it with the white thread carefully. He dipped the ring finger of his right in vermillion and made a mark between Brijmohan’s eyebrows. Brijmohan touched his feet. Vishwanath carefully picked the fruits, coconuts and the coins from the blessed square of dirt and put them in his satchel and then he looked Prajapati in the eye and cleared his throat. Brijmohan was a man of the world. He reached into his pocket. *** The crows were negotiating in the peepul tree and the air crackled with their parleys. Under it men were breaking the gathering and were heading to their homes. The newly erected electric poles stared down at the gloom. The wires hung cold and empty; the electricity failed to show up again. The sun had just dipped behind the mango orchard burning the

sky above it bright orange and pink. Children played in the street, their shrieks and laughter made the Pundit smile and look for his child. But she was not there. ‘Must be fussing about the goat’, he thought. Pundit Vishwanath left his sandals outside, crossed the dark veranda and put the sack of rice in the corner. ‘Baba! Radha is sulking again’, complained Sona. ‘Give her something to eat. Then she won’t’, he said handing her the satchel. He sat down and removed his shirt. His daughter left the goat, Radha, and emptied the satchel while his wife brought him water. ‘Again bananas?’ ‘I will get you apples when I go to the market next week’, he tried to cheer her up. ‘Any milk today?’, looking at the cow he asked his wife. ‘Hardly a litre. What will the poor creature do? We hardly have anything left to feed her’, she replied. ‘It is the God’s will. What can we mortals do?’ ‘I have made rice and there is some curd. Wash and eat’. The cow sat in her corner of the yard chewing cud. Not more than a skeleton. The kerosene lamp threw her shadow on the mud wall and highlighted the bones sticking out of her body. Most of the people in the village had sold their cattle to the slaughterhouse in the city for food grain. But Vishwanath was adamant. How could he sell his cow, the goddess he worshipped? As the draught worsened the money had started

to lose value over grain. So he had begun to articulate his preference for rice or flour over crumpled currency notes and grimy coins to his hosts. He sat down on the plank Rama had put for him, cupped his right hand and poured water in it. With his eyes closed he muttered a mantra and drew a circle around his plate with the water in his hand and threw the rest above his head. He joined his palms together and bowed to the food and then began to eat. ‘The man from that place in the city is coming in a day or two, Kavita told me’, said his wife. ‘She got bags of rice and wheat in return for her cow and buffalo’. ‘We are brahmins. The cow is our mother. I will not sell my mother. And that too to a Muslim’. ‘You want to see all of us dead?’ Her voice was heavy. ‘Have faith Rama. Be strong. Only faith and Dharma can save our souls in this Kaliyug’. ‘What about our child? Can you tell this to Sona?’ He looked at his daughter feeding the goat one of the bananas from the satchel. Could he tell her this? The only proper meal she was getting was at school. The watery daal and the bhaat were better than nothing after all. He had to feed his family. Wasn’t it his dharma as well? ‘I cant sell that cow, Rama. Our ancestors, how can I shame them with this immoral act? Shastras say that the cow is the only wealth of a brahmin and she is the one by whom he sails to the afterlife and, ultimately, the Moksha’.

Rama sighed and looked at the moth circling the lamp. She picked his plate and left. He lied down at the cot in the yard and lit a beedi. Humming the tune of the bhajan, “Raghupati ragahav rajaram, he smoked and stared at the stars. *** A month had passed and he had got no invitation for any puja or blessing or ceremony of any manner. The quantity of rice on his plate had shrunk to the point that he had a perennial craving for food. The sensation of this ever present hunger dulled his senses and he found it difficult to concentrate during his daily reading of Geeta in the morning. For the last few days he had been urged by many of his neighbours to throw his dharma in the river and sell his cow. But Pundit Vishwanath would not budge. And his stature and position among the villagers stopped them from arguing with him. He was an authority on the shastras and had settled many disputes among them by dint of his moral authority. But a few among them found him, under these circumstances, smug and arrogant. For them, he had a duty to his family first and it was more important than the sermons of faith and dharma that he was so fond of delivering to them. The government aid had not materialised yet and the village was facing the threat of starvation now. A lot of families had locked up their homes and left for the city. The attendance in the village temple had fallen and the slaughterhouse man had his hands full. The peepul tree in the centre of the village square was silent these days as the crows had migrated to places where water and food was available. The pond was dry and the only well that was left with some water was running dry, fast.

He came home after a small puja at the village barber’s house. The satchel was almost empty today except for a kilogram of millet. Rama rushed to him. ‘Sona is ill. She has a fever’, she cried. He could hear her cough and moan. The girl was not getting enough to eat and had become wasted. She had fainted today. He ran inside and saw his daughter lying as a heap on the cot. He touched her forehead; she was burning with fever. “Mahadev! Help me!” he cried. Only food could help him now. The neighbours had also heard about this and had come to look and offer advice. ‘The lorry is going to leave for the city now. You still have time Pundit ji. Sell the cow and save your girl’. ‘Yes, yes. What is the use of dharma if it kills one’s child’, offered an elder. Vishwanath wiped his tears. He took the cow and set out for the peepul tree. The lorry was parked there, its engine running. He could see the eyes of emaciated animals visible behind the grill. ‘Ram Ram, Pundit ji!’, said the man. ‘How much for this cow?’ ‘Let me see. There is nothing left here. Looks like a walking skeleton to me. I can’t offer much, Pundit ji’.

‘Just tell me what you can give’, Vishwanath was close to tears. He clasped his hands and pleaded to the man he would have not even talked to earlier. ‘A bag of rice. No more. That’s all I can give. My final offer’, he shook his head. ‘Have you no shame?’ Vishwanath was indignant. ‘Don’t you think you and I are past that now?’ The man took the rope and Vishwanath, weeping, turned to avoid looking at the cow being shoved into the lorry. It was close to dark now and the peepul tree loomed black and large. With a clanging of gears, the lorry left a cloud of dust behind as it set off for the city. After the sound of the lorry faded away, it was still now. The cicadas were singing. Pundit Vishwanath picked up the bag of rice; he felt crushed under its weight. He adjusted it on his shoulder and as the last light drained out of the western sky he began walking slowly towards his home.

E-Magazine Quote- “There are no traffic jams on the extra mile”. By Zig Ziglar. Meaning: If someone is willing to go the extra mile, it means that they are willing to make a special effort to do or achieve something. The interesting thing is everyone can go the extra mile but so few of us consistently choose to do so and that’s so unfortunate. It really is simply a matter of choice, a mindset, an expectation. It doesn’t require any special skills.Thats what makes it extremely intriguing that so few people are willing to do it. If you simply take a minute or two, you can think of numerous ways that you can go the extra mile. Start with one today and build from there. I can tell you that it will be noticed and will extremely reap rewards, often in many ways you don’t expect. Even one can start by giving a “Thankyou note” or by just giving a “smile”. ARTICLE ON BIOLOGY WORLD Biology is the natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their physical structure, chemical processes, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms, development and evolution.
Biology has evolved as a field of science since it was first studied in ancient civilizations, although modern biology is a relatively recent field. Science is a process that requires the testing of ideas using evidence gathered from the natural world. Science is iterative in nature and involves critical thinking, careful data collection, rigorous peer review, and the communication of results. Science also refers to the body of knowledge produced by scientific investigation. Pseudoscience is a belief presented as scientific although it is not a product of scientific investigation.

One thing is common to all forms of science: an ultimate goal “to know. Curiosity and inquiry are the driving forces for the development of science. Scientists seek to understand the world and the way it operates. To do this, they use two methods of logical thinking: inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning.
PODAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (CIE), KALYAN
ISSUE - 9
Scientific Reasoning: Scientists use two types of reasoning, inductive and deductive, to advance scientific knowledge. Inductive reasoning is a form of logical thinking that uses related observations to arrive at a general conclusion. This type of reasoning is common in descriptive science. A life scientist such as a biologist makes observations and records them. These data can be qualitative or quantitative and the raw data can be supplemented with drawings, pictures, photos, or videos. From many observations, the scientist can infer conclusions (inductions) based on evidence. Inductive reasoning involves formulating generalizations inferred from careful observation and the analysis of a large amount of data. Brain studies provide an example. In this type of research, many live brains are observed while people are doing a specific activity, such as viewing images of food. The part of the brain that “lights up” during this activity is then predicted to be the part controlling the response to the selected stimulus; in this case, images of food. The “lighting up” of the various areas of the brain is caused by excess absorption of radioactive sugar derivatives by active areas of the brain. The resultant increase in radioactivity is observed by a scanner. Then researchers can stimulate that part of the brain to see if similar responses result.
