70th Anniversary Event!

Porsche 70 th Anniversary at Porsche of Towson

It started simply enough, Steve Postol and the team at Porsche of Towson told us they wanted to have a super spectacular 70 th Porsche Anniversary celebration. Steve proposed PCA Chesapeake gathering at Hunt Valley Horsepower with Porsche of Towson supplying breakfast made by the Iron Rooster. Then Steve went even bigger by proposing a German themed lunch at the dealership. The tour committee leaped into action and planned for a tour from HVHP to Porsche of Towson through the bucolic countryside of Baltimore County. Then Jim Earlbeck of the tech committee proposed a display of 911 history, shortly after, it expanded to “we cannot ignore 356’s, Boxster’s, Cayman’s, all of the transaxle cars, Panamera’s, Cayenne’s and Macan’s! Then we said let’s have at least one example of each type of Porsche’s road cars. What were we thinking? Well….. how did we do? I think I can accurately say we were only missing a 904 Carrera and GT1 I can truthfully say, no one who attended the show was disappointed by the great cars that they were able to see up close.

After being concerned all week that Saturday June 9 th would bring us rain, the day dawned bright and clear. We continued to be blessed the rest of the day with no rain for the duration of the day!

The action started at 8:00AM in the morning at HVHP, with what I suspect was many more than the 167 people and 99 cars that were anticipated. The lineup of cars was tantalizing show of Porsche’s. Many people from the rest of HVHP soon heard about the spectacular line up of Porsche’s and were seen walking up and down the rows of Porsche’s. They were able to see early generation 911’s, a 911R, GT3, GT3 RS’s, 356’s, Macan’s, Turbo’s of 911 and 944’s, lots of special color cars, 911, Boxster and Cayenne GTS’s. Meanwhile, courtesy of PoT, the PCA faithful enjoyed delicious coffee and breakfast sandwiches served by the Iron Rooster.

The Tour Committee then briefed all of the tour participants and it was off to PoT at 10:00AM with another wonderfully planned and executed tour on beautiful country roads.

Tour participants started arriving at Porsche of Towson around 11:00AM and the really big show was on! Over 200 people and 115 cars were in attendance at Porsche of Towson. In my memory of ten years of PCA Chesapeake events this was the largest event that I have ever participated in. About 45 cars were on display and I am certain that the viewers were amazed by the rarity of some of the cars. Indoors at the dealership were found a beautiful Ivory 356, a White 914-6, a Metallic White 959, a Black Carrera GT and a Silver 918 Spyder. Of course, Minta Miller had a membership table set up to help non PCA’ers to join and enjoy the fun throughout the year. She also offered her home made, delicious 911 shaped candies as a special treat for visitors.

The show at PoT was just starting after viewing the fabulous cars in the showroom. Outside was an amazingly complete collection of Porsche history. On display was a 1957 Speedster in Polyantha Red, a 1966 911 in Bahama Yellow, an all original 1973 911E in Light Ivory and a 1977 930 Turbo in Ice Green Metallic. If you were not absolutely captivated by this point you should probably schedule a visit to the doctor and have your pulse checked. The beat went on with a GT2RSX race car, a beautiful Midnight Blue Metallic 1993 RS America, an Adventure Green Metallic

A full range of Boxsters were on display, including a 986 S in Viola Metallic, a White 987, a 991 GTS in Agate Grey Metallic and 718. Next up were the Caymans, including a real hot rod, a White 2012 Cayman R, a Black 981 and a 718.

As you all are aware the by now the most popular Porsches are Cayenne’s, Macan’s and Panamera’s. The display of these cars did not disappoint, starting with a 2009 Cayenne GTS, along with a 2016 Cayenne GTS, a 2016 Macan S, and a 2013 Panamera GTS.

As if cars were not enough Porsche of Towson supplied a wonderful German style lunch. It featured cinnamon and regular soft pretzels. Additionally, potato salad, deviled eggs, chicken schnitzel, bratwurst with sauerkraut, and tender brisket. Of course you could wash it all down with your choice of soda or a wonderful selection of German style beer.

Many thank you’s from the tech committee to all who made this happen….especially Steve Postol who conceived the idea , Lori Connolly who executed many of the plans and many others on the team at Porsche of Towson. Some of Steve’s team such as Zach, the parts manager, came in on their off day to be sure we could purchase the special 70 th Anniversary merchandise. Thank you to Ariano Arao who put together another wonderful tour, Minta Miller sent out eBlasts and welcomed people at the membership table, and Lynda Sobus set up the registration. Of course, the real hero’s were those who took the time and effort to bring out their cars to be displayed, thank you!

Many of the photos this moth are courtesy of Dan Wagner Photo. If Porsche is in need of a photographer in Manhattan, he splits time between Maryland and there. Dan worked with Hunt Valley Horsepower to document the Cars & Coffee and the 70th Anniversary Party at Porsche of Towson.
