FOLLOWING GOD’S CALL TO HONDURAS, BEN AND LEAH WELTON
FOLLOWING
God’s Call
TO HONDURAS Ben Welton (class of 2006) and his wife Leah have followed God’s call to Honduras, where they are working at Rancho Ebenezer in San Matias. Rancho Ebenezer is a foster and orphan care facility just outside of the capitol of Honduras which serves abandoned and neglected children. The facility is perched in the mountains, on a 90-acre campus at the edge of a protected rain forest. Ben and Leah work with a team of Honduran and North American missionaries to care for about 40 children, from 18 months to 16 years old. Leah is a fully licensed clinical social worker who trains other adults and serves as a counselor to the children at Rancho Ebenezer. Many of these children have suffered from sexual and physical abuse and various forms of neglect. Leah’s skills as a counselor have given her the opportunity to build relationships with many of the children. Ben is a nurse, but his primary role at Rancho Ebenezer is supervising the vocational education program. In this role, he works with the older youth and oversees them as they perform jobs and learn skills for their adult lives in Honduras. He also provides some nursing care as a secondary role. Ben and Leah have been in Honduras for approximately eight months. The first six months were spent in language school, learning Spanish, and the last two months have been at Rancho Ebenezer learning their new jobs. Please be in prayer for them as they continue to adapt to life with the kids and staff of Rancho Ebenezer. Also pray for their continued growth in the Spanish language. If you would like to know more about Rancho Ebenezer or are interested in supporting their ministry, please visit WGOreach.org. if you would like to follow Ben and Leah more closely please like their Facebook page: facebook.com/ weltonsinhonduras. Finally, if you would like to receive quarterly email updates, please email Ben at ben.welton@wgomission.org.
REFLECTIONS FROM THE
Superintendent AFTER THE RECESSIONAL
As I watched fifty-one Plymouth Christian Academy Seniors walk down the aisle and out into the world, turning the page to the next chapter of their lives, I couldn’t help but think of each one of them as beautifully unique. Each one is an incomparable treasure; vibrant, confident, determined, faithful, diverse, and prepared. They are well-prepared for life beyond these walls as the result of their time spent at PCA, a one-of-a-kind school. We praise God for this place and pray for wisdom and courage as we navigate the road ahead, committed to educate each graduate from a biblical worldview and equip them to impact their world for Christ. There is a one-of-a-kind experience awaiting prospective students and I implore you to share our stories and bright future so that many other young people will benefit from the opportunities that PCA affords.
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER
School’s out, but the work on campus continues. While desks are empty and classrooms have grown quiet, there’s truly not an idle day that goes by at PCA during the summer. Opportunities for our young people to learn and thrive abound during June and July. The sights and sounds are different, but at PCA we are productive during these summer months. You can hear the sounds from camps across campus: Band Camp students playing loudly, Musical Theatre students singing and performing an unforgettable showcase, and Manners & Leadership Camp students enjoying daily dining tutorials and high-energy team building activities. Students in Creation Science Camp had the opportunity to explore science through hands-on activities and discover the splendor and wonder of the world God created. The activities and action continue in Basketball Camp, Volleyball Camp, and Coding Camp. Campus improvements are underway and will welcome students and families this fall. We are deeply grateful to our staff who expend extra energy during these months to prepare our campus and students for the next exciting chapter in the life of Plymouth Christian Academy. Regardless of the season, PCA is a vibrant place and our faculty and staff take our mission very seriously.
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN
I’m filled with a renewed passion as I dream of what God has in store for us as we head toward accomplishing our 20/20 vision, partnering together and using the very best practices and strategies to advance our students’ education and respond to their unique abilities, gifts, and needs. We are continually seeking out new opportunities to move our school forward. With much prayer, partnership, and guidance from Scripture, let’s continue to tell the stories of God’s faithfulness and thank Him for the awesome task of shaping the lives of the next generation. Thank you for your faithful support of the work and ministry here at PCA. We still have much to accomplish so that, when our kindergarten class walks down the aisle at their high school commencement, they will be prepared follow Christ in the next chapter of their lives. We desire your prayers and we are eager to have you join us on this one-of-a-kind journey at PCA. May God bless you until we meet again. GETTING TO KNOW PCA
REGENTS
The PCA Regent Board has the responsibility and authority for the establishment, function, and maintenance of Plymouth Christian Academy’s programs and fiscal matters. In the spring of each year, new regent members are nominated and then voted into office by CBC church members. During the recent regent board interviews several candidates asked excellent questions which made us think that it would be worthwhile to share a “Regent Board Q&A” with our PCA community.
Q. What is the relationship between Plymouth Christian Academy and Calvary Baptist Church?
A. PCA is the educational ministry of Calvary Baptist Church (CBC). CBC Leadership Boards include the Elder Board (consisting of vocational and lay elders who provide leadership in all areas of the church life and ministry), the Trustee Board (responsible for the facilities and Joyce Zandee finances of CBC and all its ministries), the Deacon Board (responsible for flock care), and the Regent Board (responsible for Plymouth Christian Academy). Each of these boards consist of members who are nominated and voted in by the CBC Congregation.
Q. Who serves on the Regent Board?
A. The PCA Regent Board is comprised of eight or more CBC members. The Regent Board has two co-chairs, one of which is an Elder elected by the Elder Board and one of which is a Regent elected by the Regent Board. Non-CBC members are also able to serve on the Regent Board, but at least 2/3 of the Regents must be CBC members. This past year, a member of the CBC Trustee Board has attended our Regent Board meetings which has strengthened the partnership between our boards. In the coming year, voting members of the PCA Regent Board will include 11 CBC members and three non-CBC Regents.
Q. What is the role of the Regents?
A. CBC Leadership empowers the PCA Regent Board to provide strategic direction and oversight to the school. The Regent Board does not get immersed in the day-to-day operations of the school. Instead, we create policies to guide our one employee, PCA Superintendent, Caryn Huntsman, and we establish a 5-year strategic plan against which we measure progress made. The Regents refer to the 5-year Strategic Plan as the “20:20 vision” because it was first coined in 2015 when the plan covered the 2015 to 2020 timeframe. Although the 5-year strategic plan gets updated each year, we continue to refer to it as the “20:20 vision” because we feel it conveys the clarity of purpose we have in seeking to attain these goals.
Q. When do the Regents meet?
A. The PCA Regent Board has a regularly-scheduled meeting once a month. Regents may also attend meetings for subcommittees which are formed to gather information and/or make recommendations to the full board. Each spring, the Regents attend a weekend retreat where we discuss several strategic issues in more depth.
Q. What happens during Regent Board meetings?
A. Each month, PCA Regents must read several documents posted to an online file repository in preparation for the meeting. Our meetings begin with time devoted to focused prayer for our school. Caryn shares a superintendent report which identifies monthly progress toward achieving the various components of the PCA 20:20 vision. The bulk of each meeting is devoted to a discussion of several Strategic Initiatives, which this year have included a strategic compensation model, our international homestay program, RB-prioritization of strategic investments, characteristics of flourishing schools, survey findings, and potential use of our back property, among others. At each meeting, we also review and approve monitoring reports written by Caryn. These monitoring reports confirm adherence to RB policies and demonstrate ways in which desired ends are being achieved. We spend time each meeting hearing an update from the representatives from the Elder and Trustee boards and then we close with a meeting effectiveness review.
Q. What are the components of the 20:20 Vision?
A. Plymouth Christian Academy, as the educational ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, is committed to pursuing the following strategic directions in the 5-year forward-looking timeframe: • Provide Signature Learning Opportunities • Prepare Christian Servant Leaders • Implement Infrastructure & Facility Improvements • Develop Well-Rounded Students of Distinction • Cultivate Ministry Partners • Value and Support Committed Faculty • Strengthen Foundational Education Please refer to the July 2016 Eagle Vision (accessible at http://www.plymouthchristian.org/about-us/eagle-vision/) for additional details on each of these components of the PCA 20:20 Vision. Class of 2017 Class Valedictorian, Taylor Mistele
Congratulations Class of 2017! We wish you the very best as you move on from PCA to the next steps that the Lord has planned for you. Whether you were a “lifer” or arrived just this year, you will be missed. The impact made by the Class of 2017 on PCA was felt across the school, from those who led PCA to its first MHSAA volleyball state championship, leaders who built a sustainable and growing robotics team, and actors who moved hearts with performances in West Side Story. These are just a few of the many accomplishments and contributions made by the Class of 2017 to the PCA community. Thank you! This fall, members of the Class of 2017 will be headed to college or to work. What will they be doing? 49 (96%) will attend college next year 1 (2%) will work 1 (2%) is undecided
Regent Board Member, Bob Chapman, presenting his daughter Magalie’s diploma
As the Class of 2017 moves on, it is the prayer of the PCA teachers, school administration, and regent board members that you will continue to grow in your relationship with Christ and seek to glorify Him in all that you do.

THE PCA DIFFERENCE BEGINS IN PRESCHOOL Exploring God’s world through music, movement, and learning activities is an everyday occurrence in the preschool room. This year, preschool and begindergarten students got a special opportunity to experience our high school science lab and gymnasium. Mrs. Karen Hott, High School Chemistry and Physics Teacher, led our youngest students and their parents through some fun, hands-on activities in the high school science lab. Children donned lab aprons and goggles to make “Dinosaur Toothpaste”. They learned that brushing our teeth is necessary because tooth decay causes cavities. This decay entered our world when sin entered the garden. They also learned that Jesus loves us and has a perfect plan to forgive our sin. This wonderful experiment was both fun and educational, with the beautiful gospel message presented. After their lab experience, the children moved to the PCA gymnasium where Mrs. Brodhagen led them in fun movement games and activities. Both students and parents had a great time celebrating how God created our bodies with the ability to move, dance, and run. We invite you to join us for a tour of our early childhood classrooms to see more examples of foundational biblical worldview education in action. We also ask that you share the news of our preschool program with family and friends! Questions? Please contact Bonnie Varney at bonnie.varney@plymouthchristian.org.
STRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE PROGRAM AT PCA PREPARES GIRLS FOR WISE! Each summer, the University of Michigan hosts the WISE Program, Women in Science and Engineering. According to the University of Michigan website, “WISE is designed to increase the number of girls and women pursuing degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.” We are pleased to announce that this summer, five PCA middle school students were accepted into this highly competitive program! Congratulations Emily Cameron, Peyton Hess, Emma Heussner, Lauren Heussner, and Faith Warmbier!

Congratulations to Taylor Mistele, PCA Senior, who received the DAR Good Citizen Award this year. Taylor Mistele accepts the The Sarah Ann Cochrane DAR Award, accompanied Chapter of the National by her father, Curt Mistele Society Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the DAR Good Citizens Program in ten local high schools. The student is selected based on Dependability, Service, Leadership and Patriotism. Taylor applied and wrote an essay to be considered for the award. The title of the essay was announced at the actual time of writing and had to be completed within 2 hours with no reference material allowed. Way to go Taylor!
PCA GRATULIERT Morgan Raymond, pictured with PCA German Teacher, Mrs. Emily Carlson
PCA Congratulates Morgan Raymond, whose outstanding performance on this year’s Level 3 AATG National German Exam, has earned her an AATG-PAD Study Trip Award to Germany! In addition to her 97th percentile exam score, Morgan distinguished herself in two rounds of interviews, conducted in German and in English, with professors of German on the Michigan AATG Testing Committee. One of only 44 students nationwide to earn this honor, Morgan will be spending three weeks this summer staying with a German host family, attending a German school, and making excursions to Berlin and other places of cultural and historic significance in Germany. The award is sponsored annually by the AATG (American Association of Teachers of German) and the German government. Eagle Vision - 5
A YEAR OF GROWTH
THE ATOMS FAMILY ROBOTICS TEAM 2017 marked the 6th year for Team 4405. We are thrilled with the growth for the PCA High School Robotics Team over these past years and look forward to an exciting future. Last year was a learning process for the entire team, students and mentors. We learned that we had to pay attention to electrical because in 2016 it was an afterthought and became a weakness of the robot. We had to focus more on design, specifically integration, as last year the various parts of the robot did not always fit together. Finally, we had to focus on developing our business team and fundraising. With five graduating seniors, we also wanted to turn our attention to our seniors creating a legacy that would outlast this season. We wanted to focus more on developing our students to lead, rather than depending on the mentors. And we wanted to send our seniors, Josh Mason, Brendan Hess, Josh DeVries, Ray Farraj, and Adam Albert, off in style. This year we assigned team captains and assistant captains. They would ultimately be responsible not only for the output of their team, but for training the next generation. Additionally, we started the yearlong transition as I stepped down as lead mentor and Mr. Chubb prepared to take over the reins next year. With these changes, this year was a great success. In our first district event, we finished 2nd, winning 13 consecutive matches before falling in the semifinals. This success really seemed to energize the team and we realized that this year we would be a strong team on the field. Additionally, our media and business teams picked up STEAM (pun intended) as we started developing an outreach program, got our finances under control and started producing videos and a blog to keep the community involved. On the field, we had continued success as we finished 10th and again advanced to the semi-finals in our second event, which also qualified us for states. At states, we continued to excel as our software team refined autonomous and our drive team and human players were unmatched. Throughout the competitions, especially as the season went on, I can honestly say that our entire drive team was always making the robot better and that I never saw another drive team perform as well as ours. We finished the year in 20th place overall in Michigan (which sent us to St. Louis for the world championships for the 3rd year in a row), which is a huge accomplishment as Michigan is considered the most competitive region in the world and robotics does not break divisions down based on school size. PCA’s team finished ahead of Plymouth/Canton/Salem (who were world champions by the way!), Northville and Farmington public school teams. Looking forward to next year, the team will be reaching out to the community by participating in Robots in the Park with the Plymouth/Canton/Salem team, as well as recruiting from within as we need to backfill five graduating seniors. Finally, this team will continue to focus on fulfilling the ‘C’ in PCA, by living out the Christian faith we attest to. Because, ultimately, robotics is simply a means to an end, not the end in and of itself. Keith Boruta, PCA Alumni and Robotics Mentor

STUDENT STATESMANSHIP INSTITUTE 2017 On April 20 and 21, PCA seniors had the opportunity to participate in a long-standing PCA tradition, Student Statesmanship Institute (SSI). The founder and president of SSI is James Muffett and he brings together a great perspective on the Bible, history of our nation, and current issues. PCA has hosted this dynamic Biblical worldview and leadership training program for high school seniors for several years. Included in the two-day event are classroom sessions on topics including Ambassadors for Christ, Biblical Worldview, and Debate/Communication. Woven throughout is a Mock Legislature, designed to teach students about responsible Christian citizenship and challenge them to apply godly principles to current issues. Students role play as state legislators while debating actual bills taken from the Michigan legislature. In preparation, they hold committee meetings where they hear testimony from lobbyists. We were grateful to welcome the following group of school and community leaders to serve in the role of lobbyist: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

ARTS ON REVIEW ELEMENTARY ART INSPIRED At PCA we are grateful that we can integrate scripture into all subjects. Mrs. Tina Kincer’s elementary art classroom is a prime example of this integration. The concept and inspiration for every art project is based on a Bible verse. The recent fourth-grade identity project used John 1:12: “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
MUSICAL THEATRE COURSE: SHOWCASE Following its successful run of Little Women the Musical in January, the musical theatre course continued into the second semester with a focus on nuanced performance skills, culminating in a final performance at the Fine and Performing Arts showcase during chapel on May 23rd. The musical theatre students performed group numbers from Something Rotten!, Kiss Me, Kate!, Into the Woods, Company, and more alongside soloists from the band and vocal music programs.
4th Grade Identity Art Project Little Women the Musical
ALL-SCHOOL MUSICAL: WEST SIDE STORY PCA Theatre finished the season with Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. The breath-taking and intense musical adapted from Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, Romeo & Juliet, captivated audiences for three nights, March 16-18, in the Calvary Baptist Auditorium. The show was successfully presented by thirty-eight PCA students in grades eight through twelve, three faculty cast members, a seventeen-piece pit orchestra, and many student and parent tech volunteers. Stay tuned for the 2017 Shakespearean play and 2018 all-school musical announcements this fall!

BAND NOTES The Secondary Concert Band performed at the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association’s Band & Orchestra Festival at Woodhaven High School this past March. The MSBOA District Band and Orchestra Festival is an opportunity for ensembles from MSBOA member schools to perform a program of three pieces for adjudication. District-level festivals are held throughout the State of Michigan’s 16 districts from mid-February through mid-March. Each performing ensemble is evaluated by three performance adjudicators and one sight-reading adjudicator. ELEMENTARY MUSIC and THE AGAPE LEAGUE
Spring 2017 was an exciting time in the elementary music department. The final months of school were filled with recitals, student-led chapel worship, and the elementary spring concert. First through sixth grade students worked for months preparing for the spring concert entitled, The Agape League. Sixth grade students led the way in the drama portion of the show, with their superhero poses and the action-packed choreography. Through the uplifting music, the students learned about the fruits of the Spirit. It’s a joy to share the truths of scripture with young people through music and drama and to see elementary students use their God-given talents in such creative ways.
VOCAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT IS ON THE RISE
PCA’s vocal music department is thriving, and is home to multiple choral ensembles and soloists. Awards and accomplishments include: Division 1 ratings at MSVMA District Solo & Ensemble, Division 1 ratings at MSVMA State Solo & Ensemble, recipient of the Madrigal Chorale Competition Scholarship, Division 1 ratings at MSVMA Musical Theatre Solo & Ensemble, and various community and school performances. At PCA, soloists from grades seven through twelve are encouraged to perform for adjudication; all eligible soloists advanced to state level festivals this year. Soloists receive instruction within the classroom and through private instruction provided on and off campus. Elementary students are provided choral opportunities from grades four through six. They meet in the mornings prior to the school day starting and have multiple performances throughout the year. Stay tuned for some exciting changes coming to the elementary vocal music program for the 20172018 school year.

PARENT TEACHER FELLOWSHIP LOOKING BACK Therefore encourage one another, and build each other up...” I Thessalonians 5:11
This year the Parent Teacher Fellowship welcomed new leadership with Andrea Shook as President and Gwen Brugger as Vice President. Needed…A new PTF Treasurer! After serving for five years as the PTF Treasurer, Nancy Chapman is stepping down. In addition to serving as the treasurer for the past five years, Nancy worked faithfully with the Parent Teacher Fellowship since 2007. She also met weekly for several years with the Prayer Partners to pray for our students, staff, and faculty. Nancy’s youngest child, Magalie, is a member of the Class of 2017 and graduated this past week. With that graduation, Nancy will be moving on from her role in the PTF. It is our prayer that she won’t go too far. Thank you, Nancy, for your years of service and the wonderful impact you have had at PCA. You will be greatly missed! With this transition, the PTF is seeking someone to fill the role of treasurer for the group. Are you gifted in this area and do you feel led to serve at PCA in this way? If so, we want to hear from you! Please email the PTF President, Andrea Shook, at andrea.shook@plymouthchristian.org. We look forward to working with you this upcoming school year!

STAFF Updates
Ledia Dittberner, 4th Grade Teacher Mrs. Dittberner departed PCA this past February, pursuing other opportunities that the Lord made available to her. She was a member of the PCA faculty since 1998. During that time, she had taught several different grades, including 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. We wish her the very best. Emilie Green, 5th Grade Teacher Mrs. Green loved teaching 5th grade at PCA, but after prayer and guidance from the Lord, she was led to be a stay-at-home mom. This upcoming year she can be found enjoying every moment with her son, Greylin. Emilie says, “It has been one of my greatest joys to teach at PCA, even for the short two years I have been here, and to be a part of what the Lord is doing here. This was a difficult decision. However, I am very excited for what this new chapter holds. You may see me around in the future, as I will be subbing occasionally. I will continue to pray for this amazing school, the wonderful families, students, and staff, and for the work that the Lord is doing and will do throughout these walls.” Megan Barnard, Secondary Vocal Music Teacher Mrs. Barnard earned a Master of Arts in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University this past June. She is now certified to teach technology and will be using her knowledge of technology to integrate new experiences into her growing vocal music program. Pat Frye, Middle School English Teacher Mrs. Frye retired from teaching at the end of the 2016-17 school year after being a member of the PCA faculty since 1988. She has been a faithful mentor to many new staff members and gave the amazing opportunity of overseas travel to countless PCA high school students. We are grateful for her dedication to her students and to PCA for the past 29 years. She will be greatly missed. Sandy Wenning, Middle School Math Teacher Mrs. Wenning has retired from teaching at the end of the 2016-17 school year after being a member of the PCA faculty since 2008. Mrs. Wenning taught middle school Math, Study Skills, Life Topics, 7th grade Keyboarding, and 3rd and 4th grade Computers. We wish her the very best as she begins retirement. Abby Garcia, 4th Grade Teacher Mrs. Garcia joined the PCA faculty this past February as the new 4th grade teacher. Get to know Abby in her own words: “I am first and foremost a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. I have been married for three years to my husband, Jon. This past May, we had our first baby, Harrison. I was a teacher at Baptist Park for two years and recently an instructional assistant at Keppen Elementary. I learned so much from these experiences, and they have shown me that I truly love teaching in a Christian environment. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a Math Specialization and a Middle School Endorsement from Liberty University. I have a passion for teaching and I love watching students learn.” Welcome to PCA!
We are “HEARTSafe”!
During this past school year, PCA administration and staff worked toward obtaining a new designation; one that we consider extremely important. That designation is to be certified as a HEARTSafe School in the State of Michigan. The steps to this designation are many, with the following topics addressed along the way: • Development of a school Cardiac Emergency Response Plan • Training staff to recognize the symptoms of cardiac arrest and know how to get help “on the way, right away” • Determining what staff members are CPR certified and if they are ready to use their skills when needed • Educating staff on the placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) located in your school building and how to use them, and making sure the AED’s are properly maintained and inspected We are proud to report that PCA received this designation and is now officially recognized as a Michigan HEARTSafe School! We are grateful to Principal Ryan Batson for his leadership in this training and to Jennifer Shea, Manager with the Student Heart Check Program from Beaumont Hospital. Jennifer was instrumental in staff training with AED use, AED drills, and general campus suggestions for AED signage and much more.
