{ Regent Board Report 2014/2015 } Insights from the PCA Regent Board The PCA Regent Board, currently comprised of 8 CBC members and 3 non-CBC members, is the body commissioned by the leadership of Calvary Baptist Church to be responsible for providing strategic direction for Plymouth Christian Academy. Superintendent Caryn Huntsman, the Regent Board’s only employee, is responsible to execute and communicate the vision and manage the dayto-day operations of the school through the PCA faculty, staff, and Administration. This article communicates key findings from recent surveys, discusses the PCA International Homestay Program, and outlines the Regent Board’s strategic direction for the 2015-2020 timeframe (the “PCA 20|20 Vision”). PCA Parent Survey In 2014, PCA parents were invited to respond to a survey designed to acquire parent input on how to improve the PCA value proposition. The stated purpose of the survey was to acquire feedback on the areas of improvement and investment families would consider most appealing in support of our goal to continuously increase value for families. Survey questions also sought parent feedback on the factors that parents consider most important when making a decision to choose one school over another as well as how well PCA parents feel our school is currently doing on each of these factors. Survey responses were submitted by 126 families, representing a 32% response rate. Findings from the parent survey have been previously communicated to CBC leadership, PCA Administration, and Parent Advisory Teams and have already been used to drive decision-making. They are now included in the Eagle Vision to ensure that PCA parents, alumni, faculty, and staff are aware of the outcomes. The first two survey questions asked parents to identify how they would allocate “100 investment units” across a number of categories at the elementary level and secondary level, respectively. The results were accumulated across all survey responders and the pie charts below summarize the overall distribution of funds. Parent-assigned allocation of investment funds at the elementary level:
Classroom facilities improvement, 9% Teacher incentives / merit pay, 14% Special needs/ student support resources, 9% Fine Arts, Music, Drama, 8% Technology, 16%
Resources for advanced students, 7% Needs-based student scholarships, 6%
Academic improvements, 24%
Eagle Vision - 4
All Others, 7%
{ Regent Board Report 2014/2015 } Parent-assigned allocation of investment funds at the secondary level:
Elective courses Impact hire 7% 7% Classroom facilities Advanced courses 6% 7%
Teacher incentives/ merit pay 11%
Technology 12%
Academic improvements 19%
Music, Fine Arts & Drama 5% Financial Aid 4% Student Leadership 4% Bible/Chapel 4% Extracurriculars 3% Languages Missions 3% opportunities 3% All Others 5%
The areas receiving highest allocation were Academic Improvements, Technology, and Teacher Merit Incentives, with Academic Improvements by far the area identified as most important at both the elementary and secondary level. Parents were asked to rank order the top five factors they consider when choosing between a Christian school and a public school option. The factors with the most “top 5 votes include taught from a biblical world view, strong academics, positive school culture, relationships with Christian teachers, and small class size, as summarized in the figure below:
Eagle Vision - 5
{ Regent Board Report 2014/2015 } Parents were also asked to rank order the top 5 factors they consider when choosing between two Christian schools. The factors with the most “top 5” votes include strong academics, quality of teachers, affordable tuition, positive school culture, small class size, and quality of bible program as summarized below:
Parents were then asked to rate PCA as Very Good, Good, Poor, Very Poor, or Unable to assess on a number of categories (as of the survey date in 2014). The graphic below shows the outcomes, ordered by number of “Very Good” responses:
The findings from the parent survey helped the Regents identify the strategic directions articulated in the PCA 20|20 vision discussed below, and contributed to the five areas of strategic investment priorities including Academics (plus Teacher Merit Pay), Technology, Fine & Performing Arts, Bible/Chapel program, and Student Leadership. Eagle Vision - 6
{ Regent Board Report 2014/2015 } PCA Alumni Survey The Regent Board also sent out a survey to PCA alumni to establish a baseline of outcomes against which we can compare future findings to assess whether implemented changes impact alumni satisfaction. A link to the survey was sent to 466 alumni and 132 responses were received (28.3%). The response rate was only fair, but there was good representation across years: 19% graduated within the past 2 years, 20% in the past 2-4 years, 21% in the past 5-10 years, 19% in the past 10-20 years, and 20% graduated more than 20 years ago. Alumni ratings in most categories varied and seemed to be related to the number of years since graduation; however, a consistent pattern was observed in the following areas, regardless of the number of years since graduation: More than 80% of all responders indicted that PCA teachers were always available to provide extra help when needed, PCA teachers encouraged them to do their best, and PCA faculty/staff had a positive impact on shaping their Christian faith. An interesting finding was that responders indicated more regular attendance at church services and small group Bible studies while they were a student at PCA as compared to after graduation from PCA, although the percentage of graduates who regularly participate in service/outreach and share their faith has increased as compared to when they were attending PCA. Teacher Evaluation Survey for Parents Feedback from parents on PCA teachers is an important component of an expanded teacher evaluation system which incorporates formal and informal classroom observations plus parent and student feedback in assessing faculty performance. Early in 2015, current PCA parents were asked to provide feedback on each of their student(s) teachers and 188 surveys were returned. Each faculty member subsequently received a report which displayed their summarized ratings along with free-text comments. The Regents would like to thank those of you who took the time to submit encouraging comments and valuable feedback on our faculty, thereby contributing to our faculty evaluation process and the goal of continuous improvement. International Program A growing trend in Christian schools across the US is the development of an International Homestay Program. This program allows international students to attend school at PCA and live with a Christian host family from PCA, CBC, or the surrounding Plymouth-Canton community. The advantages of having an International Homestay Program are many: enrolling a limited number of international students at PCA will help diversify our student population, will provide PCA students with the ability to interact with students from another culture whose first language is not their own, will give PCA students outreach opportunities with these students (as most will not be Christians), and will allow PCA host families to have a cross-cultural experience while getting paid a stipend of $700 per month. In addition, because international students pay a premium to attend school in the US, the International Homestay Program provides an additional revenue stream for our school that can be used for strategic investments. During the past school year, PCA had one student enrolled in the International Program and 2-4 international students are anticipated for the 2015-2016 school year. We hope to ramp up enrollment up to a steady state of 20 international students per year (5 per high school grade). Although only a small number of families indicated their willingness to host an international student for the school year, we hope that interest will pick up in the coming years.

{ Regent Board Report 2014/2015 } Accreditation Next April, a team of North Central/ACSI evaluators will spend several days on campus to perform an accreditation audit of PCA. PCA administration, faculty, staff, and Regents have been busy gathering materials and documenting processes that are in place to ensure that PCA meets accreditation standards and has an environment that supports continuous process improvement. Ensuring that PCA meets accreditation standards will be a focus of the coming school year for the Regent Board, faculty and Administration. New Science Laboratory The Regents are delighted to announce that PCA has been blessed with a generous donor gift designated to renovate secondary classroom space into a new science laboratory! This renovation is expected to occur next summer so that the new laboratory will be ready for students starting in the fall of 2016. In the months ahead, a team will be formed to work with an architect to ensure that the new science laboratory is designed to meet the needs of PCA’s budding scientists. PCA 20|20 Vision Using feedback from PCA faculty, parents, and alumni that was obtained through surveys, think tanks, and conversations, PCA Regents with support of CBC Leadership have established strategic directions for the 2015-2020 timeframe, the high-level outline of which is included below. Additional details on each of the strategic directions will be shared with PCA stakeholders in the coming months via Superintendent Uplink communications, State of the School presentation, and/or CBC Business Meetings. { PCA scholars } A Great Way to Visit Germany Paul Chamberlain, a Junior at PCA, has been awarded an all-expense-paid summer study trip to Germany. Paul is a student of Mrs. Emily Carlson. Paul joins with Luke Holmes, Class of 2014, as the second student of Mrs. Carlson to win this prestigious award. Paul was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 90th percentile or above on the Level 3 2015 National German Exam for High School Students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Nearly 21,000 students participated in the program this year. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, he submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German. Paul is one of fewer than 50 outstanding German students selected from across the US to receive the award. The study trip includes round-trip air transportation to Germany from New York, a home stay in a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. The study trip award is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany. “This program gives students the chance to experience Germany firsthand by living with a German family and attending school,” said Keith Cothrun, Executive Director of the AATG. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

PCA Booster Board Academic Athletic Scholarship Winners
Each year, the PCA Booster Board selects two PCA senior students, one male and one female, as the recipients of the Booster Board Academic Athletic Scholarship. The student applicants submit a number of items including the application, their transcript, two reference letters and a personal letter to the Booster Board. The winners receive a $500 scholarship that is paid directly to the college or university that the student will be attending in the fall. When reviewing the scholarship applicants, the Booster Board voting committee considers the following guidelines when determining the recipient. 1. The student athlete must have demonstrated the utmost in Christian character along with good sportsmanship and servant leader qualities both on and off the playing field. 2. The scholarship is not an MVP award, however, athletic ability may be considered. The winners of this year’s Academic Athletic Scholarship are Joey Fanelli & Megan McHugh. { fine arts }
Reclaiming the Arts for Christ The Fine Arts Department had a wonderful winter and spring this year! Our choir students participated in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association’s Solo & Ensemble Festival in the winter. They had great success and received invaluable feedback from the guest judge. We all enjoyed the wonderful production of “Annie” put on by our high school students in April. The choirs and bands held their annual Spring Concert in conjunction with the Spring Art Exhibit. The theme was “Rolling through the Decades.” We were also treated to the first ever Fine Arts Showcase which featured our applied voice students, several string ensembles, the drama department and other instrumental solos. It has been an exciting year and we are eager to see what is in store for us this coming fall!

Reclaiming the Arts for Christ
Thanks to the determination of the Fine Arts Parents Advisory Team, PCA now has a Fine & Performing Arts Booster Board (F&PA Booster Board). This group has assembled to advance the arts at PCA and helps our students recognize that they can use their artistic talent to bring glory to the Lord. We want to thank all who participated in the F&PA Booster Board fundraiser this past spring. By purchasing tumblers, you contributed almost $700 to the PCA fine arts fund. Special congratulations to Linda Mitchell, the winner of the Tigers tickets! With your support, the F&PA Boosters were able to accomplish some very important goals this past year. New art display panels were purchased and used during the Spring Art Exhibits. The Classical Music Outreach Program with the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra was purchased for the 3rd and 4th grade classes. The boosters are eager to continue their work during the 2015-16 school year. They welcome all who are interested to join them. Stay tuned L to R; Carolyn Kedney, Juli Fernandes, Alicia Allen, Mary Palmer, Susan Aitken, for meeting dates. Peggy Paulson, Dan Paulson

Alumni Spotlight:
Matthew Dodson, Class of 2011 Matthew graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor this May with a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology. In the 2015-2016 academic year Matthew will be interning with Cru (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ) at the University of Michigan. He will be sharing the gospel with thousands of college students who do not know Jesus, as well as leading Bible studies and discipling students involved in Cru’s ministry. The decision to intern with Cru was largely influenced by the way God used Cru in Matthew’s own life throughout his time at the University of Michigan. Through community, teaching and relationships with mentors, Matthew learned more about his faith during college than he had ever anticipated. Most importantly, God used Matthew’s time in college to grow his desire for the Lord. Yet, as Matthew had the opportunity to grow in his walk with God, he was challenged by his community to consider the thousands of students at the University of Michigan who did not know Jesus. Over time, God gave Matthew a desire and opportunities to share his faith in Jesus with his classmates, many of who had never heard the true gospel. Matthew is excited to be sharing the Good News of Christ with students full-time for the next year. Although it will surely be challenging, Matthew is excited to see what God will do as he is able to dedicate more time to ministry instead of trying to “fit it in on the side” as he did as a student at Michigan. This summer, Matthew is meeting with people who are excited about how God is changing the lives of college students to share about his ministry and let them know how they can be a part of God’s work through prayer, financial support or other means. If you would like to join Matthew’s team of ministry partners, contact him at 734-358-6138 or matthew.dodson@cru.org. Eagle Vision - 25

Following completion of the program, she will be pursuing a career in Museum Curating. On the German side of things, her hope is to use her language skills to travel more extensively abroad, and use her experience to help enrich museum experiences for foreign visitors. “This is in addition to just further cultivating my knowledge of German language, culture, and literature for my private enjoyment and enrichment”.
Caleb York, Class of 2011 Caleb graduated this past May from Moody Bible Institute with a BA in Bible and a BA in Theology. According to Caleb, “As is the case with so much in life, my time at Moody equal parts filled with blessing, and filled with angst. It is an incredibly difficult thing to walk with Jesus Christ and learn what it is to suffer well in Him! Nonetheless, my time has come to a close and I am finding myself absurdly blessed. In a couple of days I will be making the drive from Chicago to Pasadena, CA to begin work as a youth pastor at St. Luke’s Anglican church. St. Luke’s is a community of wonderful and welcoming folks who are committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and proclaiming His hope for the entire world to hear. They have already been a huge blessing in my life, and I eagerly anticipate ministering alongside of, and to the dear saints there. In the Fall I will begin M-div work at Fuller Theological Seminary, and barring any issues (who am I kidding, there most certainly will be issues...) Eagle Vision - 28
I will graduate in three years. From there, and from here, only God knows what the future looks like, but it is my most sincere hope to become ordained in the Anglican Church of North America, and to spend out my years ministering the reconciling love of Jesus Christ to those whom the Lord gives me voice. I am so appreciative for my time at PCA, and through my studies have come to even further appreciate what it means to have a Christian education. All of life is orienting us somewhere, and if education is not centered in Jesus Christ, then we run the risk with ourselves and with our children of letting the world orient us.”
Eric Jipping and Megan Powlus, Class of 2012 Eric and Megan met during their freshman year at PCA, but didn’t begin dating until senior year. After graduating high school, they began a long-distance relationship while Eric attended Calvin College, studying accounting and Megan attended Madonna University, studying nursing. { campus life } PCA Nature Trail…A Home to Wildlife
PCA’s nature trail, a winding path through PCA’s hardwood forest and wetlands, continues to be developed and used by PCA teachers and students. Yes, there is a hardwood forest and wetland on the property owned by CBC/PCA! Three years ago the process of developing a trail through the property was started, and each year additions are made to support our students and the wildlife that call this home. Bluebirds, one of everyone’s favorite backyard birds, are now flourishing on PCA’s nature trail. Three additional nesting boxes were added in early spring just in time for bluebird nesting. Bluebirds love apple trees and the PCA nature trail is home to five apple trees (two Jonathan and three Golden Delicious varieties). Encouraging the nesting of bluebirds on our trail adds to the health of the apple trees and the apples they produce because their favorite foods are apple maggots, spiders and flies, thus keeping the apples from being damaged. The PCA apple trees are maturing nicely and should be fruit bearing by the fall of 2016. This past fall, a dozen 18” Eastern White Pine seedlings were planted along the trail. These fast growing trees, which are the official state tree of Michigan, can easily live 200 years and some have even approached 500 years of age. The Eastern White Pine also has the distinction of being the tallest tree in Eastern North America. In a few years these trees should be able to provide food and shelter for additional wildlife. The east side of the PCA/CBC property is home to the Tonquish Creek, a tributary of the Rouge River Watershed. Currently science students are able to walk along the creek, but in the future the Science Department, working with the Parent Teacher Fellowship, would like to make an area on the creek accessible to teachers and students for water testing. Expanding this outdoor living laboratory for use by the staff and students is very exciting and a distinct benefit to the Plymouth Christian Academy campus.
