Any resemblance to the car of your dreams is purely intentional. It wears its heritage proudly on its sleeves. And fenders. And roofline. Experience the Porsche Macan S. A 340-horsepower twin-turbo V6, PDK double-clutch transmission and active all-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management for maximum grip in varying driving conditions. All standard. The Macan S is built around our defining belief that every drive should be unforgettable. And every car should be a sports car. Dream fulfillment begins with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

The View from the Big Chair -- Critical Hinges I

’m writing this April message during the first week of February, trying to get comfortable in “the big chair.” As you can see from the picture, I can’t fill the big chair by myself. Neither can any one member of the OCR Board or Committee Chair or other leader in our club. The four weeks since I was installed as President has been enough time to reinforce my earlier belief that there are a few key hinges that the success of our club swings upon, the first critical hinge being volunteerism.

April 20-22. Join me in volunteering at that event and, in addition to the satisfaction of helping, you’ll get free parking, an event tee-shirt, and lunch money. In recent years, Denise and I have helped with traffic control beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, with the belief it is one of the toughest spots to fill. You too could do that and have the opportunity to wear one of the snazzy orange safety vests. One hint - if you select an early time slot, bring your own coffee! None of the food vendors are set up at 6 a.m.

PCA is a volunteer driven club, and without the support and efforts of our volunteers we could not function. All you need to do is review the number of folks who serve the club in Board positions or positions appointed by your Board to get an appreciation for the numbers it takes to serve a diverse menu of fun activities. There are roughly 30 positions responsible for coordinating the efforts of the club, but those positions are only the tip of the iceberg relative to the number of folks it takes to pull off our many events. We need your time and your talents, so please volunteer wherever and whenever you can. My belief is you will feel more satisfied with the club, and more integral to the club. Your involvement will give you the opportunity to put your thumbprint on what we do and how we do those things. Help us craft activities that feel bespoke rather than off-the-rack where one size fits all.

Please join me in thanking those volunteers at events you attend. They are working hard to create fun opportunities for us all.

Barry Michaels PCA-OCR President

People. Porsches. Passion.

One such opportunity in April is the California Festival of Speed (“CFOS”), the single largest Porsche event in the southwest. 400 volunteers are needed to execute this three-day event from

48th Annual White Glove Story by Mark Wallace, Concours Chair Photos by Joe Barnet and Marcia Salans

T

he Concours season is here! It’s time to get your Porsche out in the sun for that critical inspection so you can spend all the time you need to prepare for Concours competition. Our OCR Concours will be on Saturday, June 16th at the Sports and Recreation Park in Mile Square Park, Fountain Valley. This year we will honor the 70th anniversary of Porsche sports cars. In June 1948, the first Porsches were built and licensed to race. Those rare cars put in motion a dedication to engineering, building, racing and driving the finest cars in the world. You are invited to attend and participate in your PCA-OCR Concours. For beginners and even experts, start your preparation with a review of the www.zone8.org website. Go to “Events” and then to “Concours d’Elegance.” You will find everything you need to know about Concours car preparation, competition and judging. The rules and categories for competition are explained. If you are interested in learning to be a Concours judge, this is where you get your start. Cooper Boggs of Cooper’s Classy Car Care will host a Concours preparation workshop at his home in May. This is your chance to spend a morning with the expert. Cooper will share tips about what it takes to win in the Concours.

Concours :

Saturday, June 16, 2018

Volunteer at the event! If you don’t plan on entering a judged category, then show up, park your car on the field and join your friends and help out at the event. Learn how it all works. On the Friday before the morning of the Concours, a hearty group of volunteers joins our field marshal to set up the field. We accommodate up to 120 cars on the field in the judged and display sections. There is room for everyone. Circle Porsche and Porsche Riverside display new cars at the Concours. Porsche vendors join us to display their merchandise. Our very own Goodie Store will have a full display of shirts, caps and many more fantastic items. We’ll have food and beverages available and the Fountain Valley Community Foundation will host a beer and wine garden at our event. The park is a great place to bring your family and a picnic to spend the day. Don’t forget to enter the Picnic Contest! Box lunches will be available for day of purchase and pre-order. All the details are being worked out right now by your Concours Committee. Details and registration will be announced in the Pando, on the App, and in the Club Calendar available on the PCA-OCR Facebook and web pages. Registration will open on May 1 and will be available through www.motorsportreg.com. Over the years, the Concours has been one of the great annual events for our club. We have seen some amazing Porsches on the field and everyone has a great time. Mark your calendar and plan on joining us! April 2018 | PANDO 15

PORSCHE PEOPLE : Pfun Pfacts Meet Paul Wilkinson, OCR’s Concours Traffic Czar

As a new member in ’09, Paul heard the calling. OCR was holding its Annual Concours in beautiful Dana Point overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Paul’s experience, as a traffic engineer, was on site circulations and parking plans, but never on grass, so the challenge began.

With both feet in, Paul became Norm Follis’ right hand man and given the title, Field Marshal, for the Concours. While only ever using stripes, Paul conjured up flour dots to mark the spaces – ingenious. Paul’s been OCR’s Traffic Czar ever since. Each year an evolving CAD plan is merged with an aerial photograph where refinements are made and figured out all on paper. The day before the Concours, the field is marked using flour dots to indicate the corner of each parking position. As the sun comes up on the day of the Concours, Paul strategically places signs by all judged car spaces, vendor positions and a few other key locations. As cars begin to arrive, the field crew utilizes Paul’s field map to guide them to the correct position. The challenge or ‘crunch’ is always when the cars start to arrive in the wee hours of the morning and it’s still too dark, or fog to thick to see the dots, and the cars begin to back up (but not for long.) Paul’s expertise has accommodated approx. 250 Porsches at our last Dana Point Concours. Sadly, our Traffic Czar’s last year will be the 2018 Concours as he looks for a replacement to ‘shadow’ him and learn the ‘dots.’ Paul, his wife, ’04 Cabriolet, ’15 Macan and ML350 will be retiring to Washington. Anybody interested? 16 PANDO | April 2018

For the Love of Porsche Story and Photos by Mike Connors

I

wanted to share a quick story about how I came to love Porsche cars. When I was 12 years old, my dad brought home a book for me called “Perpetuating Porsche Paranoia” by artist, sculptor, designer and professor, Richard Pietruska. It was filled with wonderful cartoon-like drawings of all different Porsches that influenced me so much so that I soon took to drawing my own Porsche renditions. I’ve had the book all these years, and from time-to-time still browse through it. I was able to locate Mr. Pietruska, and surprisingly found out we only live 35 miles apart in Southern California! I sent him an email and he quickly responded. We planned to meet the following Wednesday morning. Once we met, he was happy to hear my story. I brought my copy of his book I’ve had since 1984 and a framed drawing I did in 1988. He was happy to sign both for me and snap some photos. His book of drawings was absolutely the genesis behind my love for Porsche cars, and I will always thank him for that! I have owned two Porsches, a 2003 Boxster S, and currently a 2003 Carrera. The best part of the story? Both Richard and I own Seal Grey 996 Carreras!

2018 Driver Education Event #1

February 23, 2018 Story and Photos by J. Leflang

Friday was simply a blast spending time with other Porsche lovers and friends enjoying cars doing what they were designed to do. Racing is not allowed at DE events. All of the drivers were very courteous and careful around other cars. So, if you are interested in trying a track day, even if you have no track experience, you can expect to have a good day with no pressure to drive above your comfort level. It really is fun to drive in a controlled environment without trees, walls, curbs, cliffs, or oncoming traffic!

A ny driver, whether experienced or first-timers interested in trying a DE event, that didn’t attend Streets of Willow on Friday, February 23, really missed a safe and fun event that provided a lot of track time for everyone! With six 20-minute

We all owe a special thank you to our DE team, Chris MacDuff, Don Chapman and Eric Budai, as well as David Bloom for reminding us of the safety procedures, Dwain Dement of Vision Motorsports and Riverside Porsche (Walter’s) for their continuing support.

sessions scheduled for each run group and 40 minutes scheduled for a combined session at the end, drivers could expect up to 2 hours and 40 minutes of track time; and, if riding with an instructor, they could get another 2 hours on track. Everyone was so well behaved on a track that wasn’t crowded, the combined session started earlier in the afternoon and offered even more track time. We went out whenever we wanted and stayed out as long as we wanted. Cool temperatures, rising afternoon winds, and good judgment on the part of drivers getting too tired to drive safely, thinned the ranks and made the combined session comfortable for all groups. What’s in Your Garage?

My 2014 Cayman S

I have always had an affection for Porsches! My first Porsche

was a 1989 944 S2 in Guards Red I bought from the original owner, who also happened to be my niece. Once she was married and started having a family, she “outgrew” her Porsche so she offered it to me. My second Porsche was a 1991 Black 944 S2 which I later used for hauling all of my OCR Club merchandise during the years I served as OCR’s Goodie Store Manager, as it had the large size cargo area. My third Porsche was a 2005 Boxster S in Midnight Blue Metallic. I loved that car, especially when I led the way in it while hosting my 2009 OCR Yosemite Tour. But I’ve always had “an itch” when it comes to cars, so I sold my Boxster S in February of last year, and began my search for my fourth Porsche. In September of 2017 I finally found my fourth baby, a fully optioned White 2014 Cayman S that I purchased from a Member of the San Diego Region. My Cayman S now resides next to my Mini “John Cooper Works” Cooper, and also next to another one of my cars which is the real topic of this short story. Even though I’ve had a love affair with Porsches for many years now, I’ve also had an affection for old cars, especially American cars from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. There was just something about vehicles produced in those decades that defined the word “classic.” A favorite of mine has always been the 1956 or 57 Ford Thunderbird, which one day I still hope to own. Last May, unbeknownst to me, I inherited a 1947 24 PANDO | April 2018

Chevrolet Fleetline Aero sedan. The car is two-tone, with an Ivory color body and a deep Brown roof. This particular ‘47 belonged to my nephew Mario, who had been slowly restoring the car piece by piece. Mario took ill last year and passed away a week later on May 4, 2017, a very, very, sad day for my entire family. Mario always loved old cars. He bought his first car while still in High School and it was a 2-door 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop. That car is still in the family and my sister has been the current owner of the Bel Air for many decades since Mario sold it to her. Knowing how much I love old cars and also knowing how much I take care of my cars, Mario bequeathed his ‘47 Fleetline to me without me ever knowing until after his passing. Believe me when I say I was shocked when I found out. My hope now is to pick up where Mario left off on the ‘47, to slowly continue restoring it. Maybe not show quality mind you, but to a level of restoration I can hopefully be proud of and that Mario would be proud of also. I think of Mario every time I go into my garage and see the ’47 covered up. My Porsche Cayman S sits next to my ‘47 Fleetline, along with my John Cooper Works. I couldn’t ask for a totally opposite set of cars, but I’m very proud of them all especially my ‘47. The fast little German parked next to the fast little Brit parked next to the big American sitting side-by-side. Maybe one day, one year, instead of me pulling up in my Porsche to a Club event, I’ll be driving up in “my other car,” my ’47 . . . Mario’s ’47.

2018 968 West Coast Gathering June 29-July 2, 2018

There will be a gathering of 968 owners this summer in Sonora, CA, June 29th to July 2nd. Sonora is located on historic CA Highway 49, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains! Think Winding Mountain Roads! In the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills, in the heart of California’s “Gold Country” lies Sonora, named after the miners from Sonora Mexico who settled in the City in 1848. Known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines,” Sonora still holds onto its historic downtown charm while thriving as the commercial, government and cultural center for the region. This should be a great base for scenic drives, social time with fellow 968’ers and exploring the local region! For those who made the 968 Gathering in S. Lake Tahoe, this is a little southwest of that and we will have an opportunity to enjoy some of the same styles of roads and scenery! Stops are being planned at several nearby historical venues. The base hotel is the Sonoran Inn (http://www.thesonorainn.com/) with discount rates of between $135-$145 per night; depending on room type. There are other higher-priced hotels/inns/B&Bs and some lower-priced lodging to suit all pocketbooks and tastes. One caution, there are no first floor rooms at the hotel, and the elevator is under repair and may not be operational. If this is a concern, they have an adjacent property with first floor rooms that you can book. Make your reservations no later than May 29th to check-in on Friday, June 29th and check-out on Monday, July 2nd. The block of rooms will be released after May 29th. Ask for the “Porsche Club 968” special rates. Reservations should be direct to the hotel at 209-532-2400. For more details and to let us know you are coming, contact us at oy-koh@comcast.net

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

THE NEW PORSCHE

GT-2 RS

GT-2 RS Ready to EAT YOU!

PORSCHE GT-2 RS : The new Porsche GT-2 RS seems to be in every automotive magazine in the world these days. What’s new about that? Porsche seems to do that quite well at creating a ‘buzz’ over a new 911. This time, however, the buzz is quite well deserved. explains a lot of new things in 4 pages. I would love, I would even pay to go see this 911 compete against McLaren, Lambos, Verions, Corvettes, Ford GTs, Dodge Demons; anything, one against them all. I think Porsche engineering would run away from them all. However, the politically correct rule makers want no one to have any advantage of their hard earned work, so their rules would, as they always have, set heavy penalties on our GT2 RS.

If this doesn’t make you want to climb in-nothing ever will! their own test tracks so they can prove the merits of their engineering without the money and politics of ALL the sanctioning bodies! Tell them all to take a hike! Another thought on the newest, most 0-60 quick, 100-or 200 to 0, and the most outrageously popular 911 GT2 RS. Just one thought: Can you for a moment recall the not so long ago raves and all the “got-to-haves” for the Porsche 997 GT3 RS 4.0? Or the even newer, “911-R.” Where has all that gone today?

Is the 2018 911 GT-2 RS in for the same disappearance act? When a new car, a fun car, or as some demean “a toy car,” is acquired mostly for the attention and exclusiveness of owning it, and it slowly fades away like yesterday’s ball scores, I ask, “WHAT’S THE POINT?” I think almost every Porsche is special. Many Porsches are very special and that starts from the concepts, all the way through to maintaining it when it is old. Now there is an odd word to use around Porsches. No one seems to tolerate the words, “Porsche” and “old!” Porsches, no matter how beat-up, raced, modified,

I have always wondered why Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Ford, Chrysler, and GM for that matter, haven’t staged races on

neglected, or just plain worn out, Porsche age as, “Classics,” “Vintage,” “Historic,” “significant;” and that “significant” seems to mean anything such as having gold weave in the seat trim. Well, No fooling around, my thinking is, IF YOU LOVE YOUR PORSCHE, it is just as special as the GT-2 RS’s speed potential. No April fooling. Really. NO FOOL’N here either. Why does it seem that Porsche seems to dislike their engines? Why is the “motor” hidden under two air cooling fans? And why must everything be black, hidden, and buried under a mass of “stuff,” and in my narrow appreciation,

RUF Ultimate CTR 2017 now a water cooled motor we can be proud to look at and proud to show off. PS yes, you can see the rearcrossover coil spring rear suspension, all clearly visible as well!

Why is it so UGLY? Why I ask is simple. Check out the newest Ruf, A 2017 CTR Ultimate 911, a twin turbo almost entirely of Ruf construction for the newest and ultimate 911 of them all. And it has an ENGINE anyone can be proud of, show off, and clearly see and understand everything. So, I ask, IF RUF can do it WHY CAN’T PORSCHE?!

“VE NEED TO GET’N DER MOTOR OUT.”

ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THIS IS ABOUT? PORSCHE WORK SHOP MANUAL I :

1 EN, pg. E6. 1965 - The correct procedure for removal and installing engine with transaxle.

There are reasonable Long Arm Floor Jacks out there in the market. I wore out a Harbor Freight 2-1/2 ton “Long Frame Floor Jack” from wear as the jack (back then) had no grease fittings and the metal was of such poor quality it wore the pivot bores out and the jacking arm had too much side play! That was back in 1992. I replaced it (2007) with another same Harbor Freight, 2-1/2 ton, Long Frame Floor Jack #42820, and it has lots of grease fittings and the metal 32 PANDO | April 2018

ANSWER: This is a Porsche 901, a very early pre-production 901 and jacking the car up using a ‘Long Arm Floor Jack’ is how you did it in 1964. And, it still works just as well today. Of course, we always USE a wood block on the center of the engine crankcase and after jacking up ALWAYS USE SAFETY STANDS for anything, ALWAYS! : : Note - the large positive camber (bent inwards on bottom) on the rear wheels, when the weight comes off the wheels/tires and suspension : : Note - the early rear wheels and skinny 5.5” wide, even skinnier rear tires! : : Note - the twin exhaust on the early 901 muffler. : : Note - the twin exhaust on the early 901 muffler. : : Note - Dr. Ing. Ferry h. Porsche with his son ‘Butzi’ Alexander Porsche discussing the new 901.

is of much better quality. This jack lifts the 911/930 so the rear bumper valance is at least 36” off the floor. When the engine/ trans is lowered on the jack, it will clear the valance. I use a fabricated ¼” flat steel plate to jack under the engine’s Header/ Heat Exchangers, and lower or raise it to/ from the car.

Up-Fixen der PORSCHE I noticed some oil falling down from my 930 TURBO but it wasn’t around the oil drain plug or the valve covers. I later saw it was around the oil pipe to the turbocharger tank. My mechanic replaced the metal o-rings and it still leaks.

For MAY: Do you know who these guys are?

The Petersen Museum is having the Porsche display and should be a must do trip for all PCA-ers.

Turbocharger Scavenge oil pump banjo, hollow bolt with alloy sealing ring. NOTE: The banjo sealing surface is deformed and bent inward, on both sides. Both sides should be flat.

In shop, the brass Turbo Scavenge OIL LINE (930.107.338.02) was removed and examined. It revealed to have sunken down where it seals against the aluminum seals(900.123.019.30) and HOLLOW BOLT (900.175.005.02).

Auto Club So. Cal. Westways Magazine

The insides of an inflation valve I wanted to show you a mighty little thing we all have used from our childhood’s bicycles to cars and airplanes. Take a look, it is truly amazing, invented in America in 1891 and patented 1893, and nothing better has come up. It truly amazes me how much is involved in this forgotten, yet critical item, and how little most of us really know about the SCHRADER VALVE. Look it up if you are curious.

It appears the Hollow bolt was over tightened? A new Oil Line, 930.107.338.00 ($250.98), maybe the only cure. Maybe?

Who? With what? Gray hairs MUST know.

I put two orange silicone O-Rings, one on each side of the banjo, on the inside of the aluminum sealing rings. These are o-rings for the1983 chain tensioner to seal on the chain housing cover. Use O-ring grease, and carefully push the o-ring between the aluminum ring and the hollow bolt, one on each side. O-Ring: M 8.0 x 11.5, Nr. 900.123.115.30 two each.

We answer questions, inquiries, and comments. LET’S HEAR FROM YOU! Godspeed

Sneaky fix. It works, saved $250.00+ HINT: Tighten it easy. The 22mm hollow bolt and wrench for it is big, but don’t use ‘big’ torque to tighten it up.
