BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE Gary Labb
As I’m writing this, we have just enjoyed our Annual White Glove Concours. It was a great job by our outgoing Concours Chair, Norm Follis, and our incoming Concours Chair, Mark Wallace. Also, hats off to Field Marshal, Paul Wilkinson. Since we had to find a new location in Fountain Valley, it meant Paul had to design a new plan to get all our vehicles onto the field, leaving plenty of room so no one could open doors onto anyone else’s beautiful Porsche. The new location was beautiful and easy to get into and out of. Special thanks to Sandy Schwartz for sharing his MC’ing abilities with us. Unfortunately, due to some PA problems, not everyone could hear Sandy throughout the day unless you were by the stage. Thanks to all the volunteers involved in the Concours for putting on a great show at Mile Square Park. Thank you to our lead

sponsors, Circle Porsche and Walter’s Porsche. As we look at August, we have two perennial favorites coming up, the annual New Members Picnic (08/13/16) and the annual Hearts and Garages Tour (08/27/16). These are two of our most popular events throughout the year. On 8/28/16, Derek Taguchi is also putting together a tour to remember Sergey Zherebnenko and Christy ChristianMotter. Please check out the Pando, website, and Facebook page for updated information on these events. As most of you know, in the past year, besides being the Social Media Chair and Webmaster, I’ve taken on being one of the mobile app administrators. We have steadily grown to over 600 app users. For the most part, I can easily say I don’t have to do much admin work other than the original approvals.
You are a good group of users, knowing when you make mistakes and taking care of the wrong words appearing by deleting them yourselves. The PCAOCR Board of Directors hope you all continue enjoying and using the mobile app. It’s a great way to communicate as well as to know what is taking place within our region. If you aren’t already a mobile app user and would like to join us, please go to the App Store or Google Play and type in PCAOCR. The members of our Club are what keep the Club active, alive, and flowing. We have a great group of members. During the recent tragedy of Sergey’s and Christy’s unexpected passing, the group pulled together for their families and for each other. One of the things that makes this Region stand out among others is we have people who care about other people, not just cars. You guys are a great group of people. August 2016 | PANDO 3

LETTER From the Editor Story and Photo by Garey Cooper
you are a hard core “911 or nothing” Porsche fan, you would argue the classifications that are now spewing out of Stuttgart are too many and too far away from the original concept. How do you feel about this?
Speaking of the Parade Garey Cooper at work as new chief cannon inspector, the last chief cannon inspector lost his head over the job
Over the Hills and Far Away
Post retirement, most of my editorials have been written within the quiet confines of our home, “Wistful Vista’s” in California. During my working/ traveling times many were conceived, crafted, and written at 30,000 feet or near some industrial complex in need of an accurate and reliable pressure measurement. It seems I’ve gotten used to writing at home, as this month feels strange to be writing abroad. We are at the Samoset Resort, nestled next to Penobscot Bay in the state of Maine. How in the world does a California boy get here you might ask. Well, it is part of our post Porsche Parade loop. One that started in New York, wended through Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and now Maine. And just now when we got back to our hotel, what did I see? A beautiful Macan! This made me jealous, of course. It also reminded me that sports categories now exist within market segments that you would not normally associate with the idea. Of course, if
One of the events I’ve sought out at the two Parades I’ve attended are the technical presentations by Porsche factory personnel and other experts. Two years ago, in Monterrey, it was very interesting to see the “plug-in” hybrid Panamera and hear the deep technical background of this machine. This year, interestingly, there wasn’t all that great a to-do about hybrid or other electrical adaptations. Instead, it seems Porsche went back to some fossil fuel burning, politically incorrect, master designs. One that I personally lusted after was the 911R, a throw back to a light weight de-contented type of autobahn burner that Porsche used to dole out in the past. This was presented to us by the new President of Porsche North America, Klaus Zellmer, at the welcome banquet. My advice is to get one as soon as you can. Or two. One of the presentations I attended was on the new Boxster range. These are now 4 (four) cylinder! And Turbocharged! I added an exclamation mark to both of those descriptors as each is a totally new departure. While it is a new departure, it has deep historical roots within the Porsche
DNA. Porsche began with 4 cylinder technology and drew wonderful amounts of efficiency and success from these little squares of power. So too with turbocharging, albeit until now this technology was reserved for rather special and pricey higher end models in the Porsche line-up. The new Boxster uses one turbocharger and has all the “mores” you associate with new model car introductions. That is, more power, more torque, and more efficiency, etc. It wasn’t that long ago that the rumor mill circulated that Porsche was going to introduce a down market “Miata fighter” with four cylinders. Personally, I wish they would have done so, it seems closer to the roots of Porsche’s sporting heritage to me. But, is this new motor a vestigial element of that market study that has now found a snug new turbocharged home in the middle of the Boxster and Cayman? In the meantime, I’d love to drive one of these new machines, how about you?
It ain’t Me!
For the Parade festivities, Mrs. Cooper and I were joined by Salomon and Jacquie Braun, Jay and Marjorie Warren, and Mark and Tina Trewartha. All fellow PCA members. At one of the technical sessions, Mr. Jay Warren decided to return to his lair and leave Mr. Solomon Braun promising a return to pick him up when the sessions were over. Mr. Warren did leave, but returned a few moments later carrying

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington
Porsche: Origin of the Species
by Karl Ludvigsen, published by Bentley Publishers, Boston, MA This is an awesome book, from the publishing sense. The dust jacket shows front and rear views of a Porsche 356/2-40, and the end papers inside show side views of this same car, owned by Jerry Seinfeld. In a throwback to ‘the glory days of book publishing’, and in acknowledgment of the fact that this tome is not one that will ever get read from front to back in a single sitting, a ribbon bookmark is bound into the volume. Like all Ludvigsen books, this one contains a lot of words as well as pictures. It is a large book, despite using relatively small type, so keep your reading glasses handy. Considering the breadth and depth of Prof Porsche’s design accomplishments, to try to describe just how the Porsche sports-car came about is a challenge in hindsight. Whether or not Ludvigsen was or was not successful in meeting that challenge, this book is a must have for any true enthusiast of Porsche history, particularity one of the ‘356 crowd’. It contains a comprehensive description of the automotive work of the Porsche Design Office, culminating with the work on the 356/2. Beyond that model, Porsches became Ferry’s babies. Taken as a whole, Origin... tells you much more than you ever wanted to know about Porsche automotive designs. But, if you have any particular interest in a Porsche sports-car design element, you will probably find some fascinating antecedents described in this book. Even radiator(!) placement
for a sports-car was the subject of a design study in the late ‘30s, and development of war time VW engines with individual cylinder heads is described. Bevel gear driven overhead cam shafts, vertical split crank cases, etc., all appear in various degrees of sophistication at various stages in this book. Many interesting tidbits are presented, including the significant role played by the original ‘English Patient’ (who in life survived the death he suffered in the movie) in marketing some of the very first 356/2 cars. There is also a great deal of coverage of the business (and geographic) life of Prof. Porsche and his extended clan of family members and dedicated staffers. Prof. Porsche has been accused of being a ‘designer’s designer’, one who designed for the sake of designing, with little consideration for practicality or a cost-effective/marketable product. The description given of the evolution of Piero Duso’s Cisitalia program lends credence to that contention. In addition to the foreword by Jerry Seinfeld, Origin... contains contemporary commentaries by observers of Porsche car history inserted at various points in the narrative.
An incredible amount of information and photographs are provided on the late ‘40s cars. Text and illustrations comprise 285 of the 344, 10-1/2 x 10-1/2 heavyweight bond pages. The remainder are mostly two appendices courtesy of Jerry Seinfeld. One presents copies of original German research reports (along with English translations), of tests of brake and clutch components using -40 as a ‘mule’. The other presents life-size copies, without translation, of 40 pages of the owner’s manual provided with the Gmünd cars. There is also a comprehensive Index of seven, 3-column pages. The developments which led to the Porsche Sports-car form a long, complicated story; a chronology of events, political, commercial, engineering/design, and even tax law, which contributed to the genesis of the Porsche sports-car. Somewhat buried in this narration is the critical role played by Ferry in making Porsche a car production company, not just an engineering/design firm. Origin... might be available at your favorite bookseller’s, and is currently available for ~$85 at Amazon books. August 2016 | PANDO 9

AUTO-X CORNER
Mid Season Checkup
Story by Chris Barrington, Photos by Paul Novotne June 26, 2016, marked the half-way point of the season, the 5th edition of the PCA-OCR/Walter’s Porsche Auto-X Championship Series. The event was a bittersweet one. It was a beautiful Southern California day, at a fantastic autocross venue filled with Porsches as far as the eye could see, but also a somber day as we began with a tribute lap to honor the friends of the club we’ve recently lost. We honored them by doing what they loved: driving Porsches. Walter’s Porsche was well represented as Ed, Bob and Frank showcased the 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster they brought. The new Boxster S ran a 7:42 lap around the Nurburgring, which was 16 seconds faster than the previousgeneration Boxster S’s best time! If you’re wondering how the turbo engine sounds, true Porsche enthusiasts will not be disappointed. The low end torque from the new turbo engine options should work nicely at autocross.
12 PANDO | August 2016
Speaking of lap times, this event saw some of the closest battles I’ve seen in years. Top time of day went to Michael Oest in his 2007 GT3, followed closely by Kurt Ressler just 3/10ths of a second in arrears. Dave Waddell, (now racing a ’75 911S and new to class CC09) was a mere 2/100ths of a second off top BRI time of day (Bench Racing Index, e.g. adjusted times to level the playing field), in only his 2nd outing in the car with OCR. Erik Hagendijk clinched that top spot, in class SS06. Yes, that’s right, a stock class! The remaining three drivers in class CC09 were separated by just three tenths of second. I suppose that’s to be expected of the seasoned drivers that occupy that class, but even our newest drivers showed they also have what it takes. Parvaneh Carter and Jessica Durr competed in Novice Ladies and ended just 1/10th of a second apart, with Parvaneh narrowly in front. Keep an eye on Josie Doughty, whose only a little over a second off her father’s time in the same car; a few more events and I suspect she’ll be nipping at his heels. Hats off to our fine
instructors for helping our new drivers be fast and safe. We are at the halfway point of the season and multiple classes are anybody’s game. CC04 is a three-way tie for first between Adriano Bortolin, Cameron Pemstein and Erik Kinninger. Top spot in CC09 is tied between Quynh Nguyen and me. Class CC16 is also a dead heat between Tom Ridings and Kraig Amador. SS03 shows Bruce Powers and Lee Smith even on points, and just five points separating the top two in class SS07, with Eric Monroe over Stephen Bennett. If the battles remain this tight, it should be a very exciting second half of the season! I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention Global Motorsports Group (GMG) and Momo. GMG, located in Orange County (Santa Ana) offers parts and service to get you and your car to the top of the time sheets. Momo offers aftermarket accessories for your Porsche that are works of art. Let’s not forget Racing Lifestyle who has provided trackside service for helmets,
tire pressure gauges and the like at our events for a number of years now. We couldn’t provide such high caliber events without them, and without Walter’s Porsche for filling our grid with beautiful and fast Porsches. Our next autocross event is July 24, 2016 at El Toro fields. Due to construction on Marine Way during that time, the route to reach our runways has changed. Please visit pcaocr.com/ forum, and click the Autocross & DETT section to find directions to the site. We will send an email blast to attendees before the event as a reminder. You can also plug this into your browser: http:// bit.ly/299agkG The construction affecting Marine Way will eventually impact the runways we use, and, at some point, we’ll be forced to find a new venue. We have anticipated this for some time and have been diligently researching new venues. While I’m confident we’ll be able to continue at El Toro for many more months, PCA-OCR will explore a new venue for our August 14, 2016 event. Global Rallycross has held an event at this venue, and it is right on the water, which is fitting for the Orange Coast Region. The address is 3011 Miner St, San Pedro, CA. As I am sure there will be many questions surrounding this new venue, a FAQ page will be made available at pcaocr.com/forum and your feedback is welcomed. I’d like to thank Kurt Ressler, and the rest of the Autocross Team for their hard work securing the venue. We hope to see you there!

THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF SPEED
Story by Glenn Bill, Photo by Porsche Motorsport We are two days back from the two most epic motorsport events on the planet. My eyes are still bloodshot and my ears are still ringing. Our first week was spent on the Isle of Man for the fastest and most dangerous motorcycle race in the world. A 37.73 mile circuit around the island with virtually no run off area, doing 130 mph laps. Nowhere on earth can you place yourself on a racecourse, this close to the action. You dangle your feet over the grass strewn rock wall, with the thousands of other spectators, and watch and listen to these two wheel rockets flying past you at 160 mph down a public two lane road, inches from curbs, brick walls, trees and yes, spectators. A tiny shockwave hits you, and almost sucks you onto the racing surface, as dust and leaves scatter in the riders’ wake. As rider and machine disappear around the corner, you can still hear the engine straining every last rpm out of it, still going flat out until the sound subsides and the next rider/ riders appear. We saw 4 races with one sidecar race as well, with the senior TT being the climax of the two-week event. It was a flawless 5 days that we spent on the Island. Our second week was spent meandering around England with stops at Bath, Stonehenge, and a lot of the London sights. Despite the horrendous time 14 PANDO | August 2016
delays boarding the ferries to France, our tour bus got us to the famous circuit de la Sarthe for the vingt quatre heuresdu Mans. The 84th running of the 24 hours of Le Mans was the culmination of our two and a half week trip. We positioned ourselves at the Lagash grandstand about 300 yards from the start/finish line. Perfect viewing for the start and pit action. Brad Pitt had the honorary duties of starter, but not even a Hollywood script could match what was to take place a day later. If you have ever seen the Steve McQueen movie, “Le Mans”, all the drama takes place on the last lap. You look at that and imagine to yourself, “Yeah, right, that would never happen.” It happened. The start of the race was slowed behind the pace car, due to an earlier rain. After 5 laps, the 60 cars were unleashed. A great blast of sound and color eventually crested, as they made their way over the Dunlop bridge, to Tetre Rouge, and down the Mulsanne straight. On the enormous video screens along pit straight, we could see them entering the Mulsanne corner, go up to 200 mph again and enter Indianapolis corner which brings them to Arnage, the slow right hander, which then heads them back to the start-finish straight, after negotiating the Porsche curves and the Ford Chicane. Then it is back to complete one lap in front of 264,000
spectators. Only about 370 more laps to go. It was toward evening when the Audi’s suffered some time delays in the pits, which left them pretty much out of the running. It then appeared that Toyota and Porsche were going to do battle. Hour after hour, the two Toyota V6 turbocharged Hybrids and the Porsche V4 turbocharged Hybrid exchanged the lead every time one team would do their pit stop. The three maintained a steady pace and were on the same lap all the way through to the next day. This is unheard of at Le Mans. Unbeknownst to us, the highlight of our trip was about to commence. Around one o`clock in the morning, we made our way out to Arnage by bus. In the cool darkness of the night, with a full moon, you could see thousands of spectators on a half-mile long mound. Slightly below them on the other side, was the glorious fireworks show we were about to witness. Prototypes and GT cars braking hard for the slowest turn on the track. Discs glowing, exhausts spewing white flame, headlights glaring and flashing. The noise was incredible. The squeeee of the brakes, the pow of the exhaust, the crackle of the cars under de-acceleration, and then the shotgun blasts of the gear changes. Following this, they exited the turn and
accelerated up through the gears, and it’s all repeated. Then, another batch of cars come in and perform the same sounds. It is noisy. Crackle, crackle, pow, crackle, crackle, bang. That’s what all the people came to hear. After a while the constant, euphoric, powerful sounds became rhythmic. The “Music of the Night”, Le Mans style. At 3:30 in the morning, we made our way back to the empty grandstands, where I enjoyed a Cohiba cigar and just watched and listened. The haze of dust and smoke, visible in the well-lit pit area, is the only scene you can see against the blackness of the night. The sound level changes as well. With a lot of the spectators gone, the echoing of the cars off the grandstands and pit wall reaches new decibel levels. It is extremely loud, and earplugs can`t soften the noise. But you pick up the individual cars with their distinctive tones. The Audi’s V6 TDI Diesel Hybrids sound like vacuum cleaners going by. Corvettes and Aston Martins are distinct with their bone shaking, piston slapping, ground pounding
growl. The Porsches were about an octave higher, with a more low throated hollow roar to them. And the Ferraris had their siren-like, high-pitched scream. Most all of the P2 cars had Nissan engines and they had a nice hollowed groan to them as well; again, with that shotgun blast as they shifted gears. As dawn moved into the morning sun, the grandstands started to swell once again as the people started getting their second wind. It was nirvana. The ending couldn’t have been more epic. With about a half an hour to go, it was apparent Toyota was holding onto a 30 second advantage over the Porsche, which is close by Le Mans standards, with the other Toyota team car on the same lap as well. Other team managers were down in the Toyota pit congratulating them, and then with 6 minutes to go it vanished. The leading number 5 Toyota slowed on the Mulsanne and pulled to a stop right before the start-finish line in front of 200,000 very confused and anxious patrons. The team could hear the driver say, ”I’ve lost power…”. Everyone
was aghast at what they were seeing. The number 2 Porsche snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. And Toyota, having tried for decades to win this event, lapsed into catatonic shock. This was unreal. It was surreal. Don`t get me wrong, I am a Porsche guy, but it was sad to see Toyota miss out once again on something they dearly wanted. But my uneasiness soon waned, when at the airport, heading home, I mentioned to a older gentleman wearing a red and white team Porsche jacket, that it was a shame about Toyota. He replied, with a smile on his face, “It’s not called the Le Mans 23 hour and 54 minutes.” Having returned, my body clock is all out of kilter, and yes, my eyes are still bloodshot and my ears are still ringing. But I`d go again! For more photos, please visit http:// www.porsche.com/international/ motorsportandevents/motorsport/ worksracing/raceseries/fiawec/gallery/

Disneyland for Adults: A Trip to Porscheplatz Story by Gary Labb, Photos by Gary Labb and Kathy McGriff Porscheplatz
Well over a year ago my wife Marsha asked me if I’d like to go on a Rhine River Cruise in April 2016. Since my vacationing had been limited due to my father’s health conditions prior to his death in January 2015, I said I would. She explained that we would start in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and end in Basel, Switzerland. I asked her if we could extend our time in Europe and take a trip over to Stuttgart, Germany, to visit Porscheplatz for a Porsche Factory Tour and a Porsche Museum Tour. She researched the logistics and found it was a couple hours train ride from Basel to Stuttgart. Thus, Porscheplatz was added onto our European adventure. Over the past summer, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know Jack and Kathy McGriff. Jack was another long time Porsche owner like me. Jack started to attend some club functions with me but made it clear that he wasn’t a “joiner.” He explained the last time he joined anything, he ended up in the Army during the Vietnam era. Jack and Kathy were friends with some of the others who were going on the Rhine River Cruise, so Jack and Kathy 18 PANDO | August 2016
decided to go on the cruise as well. I told Jack about my desire to go to Stuttgart and he immediately wanted to go there as well.
not take any photos at the factory, truly disappointing. Thank you, Ed McRae, for knowing the right people to help me put the Factory Tour together.
Next step was actually being able to do the Porsche Factory tour. I contacted Ed McRae from Walter’s Porsche in October 2015 to see if he could assist me with the Factory Tour. Ed gave me contact information for a person at the Porsche Factory in Stuttgart. I contacted him and he said he’d be happy to help, but tours for 2016 wouldn’t be scheduled until January 1, 2016, and to again contact him after that date. So on January 2nd, I contacted him with the four names and the date and time we’d like to take our Factory Tour. Within a couple of hours, I received confirmation that Marsha, Jack, Kathy, and I were scheduled for the April 21st, 10:15 am Factory Tour. They emailed me instructions on cost, when and where to meet, and special instructions regarding their no photography rules on the Factory Tour. This was an obvious disappointment to me as I already had my super-duper SD card in my camera capable of capturing over 8,000 photos. And now I could
I let Jack know that everything was scheduled and that they gave a discount for the Factory and the Museum Tours if you were a PCA member. The next thing I knew, Jack and Kathy were PCA-OCR members. I know that Jack and I were like kids waiting to get on the big “E” ride. Not so sure Marsha and Kathy shared our strong desire to get to the Factory. Once we began our Rhine River Cruise on April 13th, it was like getting on the Riverboats at Disneyland, knowing that, down the line, we’d be on the big “E” ride at the Matterhorn. The Rhine River Cruise was very enjoyable and I’d recommend it to anyone who has not taken one. When we docked in Basel on the 20th, we jumped into a taxi and made our way over to the train station. We hopped on a S-Bahn train over to Stuttgart, took a taxi to our hotel, had dinner, and rested up for our tour on the 21st.
Looks familiar – 1967 Porsche 912
After having breakfast on the 21st, we hopped on two different trains, a S-Bahn and an U-Bahn, to get to Porscheplatz. Once we got off the train, we were like kids. Just the overwhelming size of the Porscheplatz complex - multiple factories, museum, dealership, Porsche Design store, made you again think of Disneyland, and then with the giant sculpture of Porsches rising in the sky, you just had a large smile on your face. Being involved with the Pando, naturally I had my April copy of the Pando so Jack and I could do a “Where’s Pando” photo. You would have seen our “Where’s Pando” photos in the June 2016 issue. We checked in for the Factory Tour inside the Museum. I brought my confirmation email and presented it to the receptionist. She was very nice and welcomed us. I asked her how I could pay the 24 Euros for the Factory Tour and she said, “There is no charge, you are a PCA member.” I told her we also wanted to go to the Museum and she gave me four tickets to the Museum, again, at no charge. She gave us four
clothing tags for the Factory Tour. I went up and contacted several of the staff at the Factory Tour podium and confirmed their “no photography” policy. They said we could either turn in our cameras and cell phones at the podium or put them in lockers behind the reception area. We opted for the lockers as we could also leave our jackets. They split us into two groups, English speaking and German speaking. They again made it clear about the “no photography” policy. For those that need further proof on their strict policy, a woman, who they already took a camera away from, said she didn’t have a cell phone on her person. Sure enough, they found a smart phone in her purse. They took her purse and phone away before allowing her to continue. They walked us across the street to the factory and led us on a quick two hour tour. We saw components being put together by humans, factory robots combined with humans putting together more components, all the way to the end where finished Porsches like GT3s,
991s, and Targas were rolling off the assembly line. It was difficult not to want to take one off the line and ship it home. Following the tour, we were taken back to the Porsche Museum where we did our tour of the Museum. A great history of Porsche from the beginning. Photography was allowed in the Museum. Following the Museum we had lunch at the Museum Restaurant. We then went to the Museum store. Then we went across the street to the Porsche dealership to look at brand new cars fresh off the assembly line. And then we went into the Porsche Design store within the dealership. All in all, a great day Porsche. As it was getting to be late afternoon, we decided we’d better get on the trains back to the hotel before it became rush hour in Stuttgart. We definitely enjoyed our time at the Disneyland for Adults – Porscheplatz. Additional photos from the Porsche Museum can be found at https://flic. kr/s/aHskxEazNW August 2016 | PANDO 19

Saturday, June 16th, dawned with a flurry of activity, as the soccer field at the Fountain Valley Sports Center was prepped for the 46th Annual PCA-OCR White Glove Concours. This was the first time our concours had been held at this location. Drought conditions at Lantern Bay Park forced us to secure a new location, and we were very fortunate to obtain this site because of its central location and excellent field condition. Special thanks to the City of Fountain Valley for their support and cooperation. Sandy Schwartz was the new Concours Emcee and did an outstanding job, keeping everyone posted on activities and introducing all the sponsors. The opening ceremony was begun by

Fountain Valley Mayor, Cheryl Brothers, joined us, and Mayor Brothers was recognized and thanked PCA-OCR for the support of the City Parks Dept. Paul Wilkinson, our Field Marshall, and his team of volunteers did a fantastic job marking the new field layout Friday before the event. On Saturday, they parked over 150 cars, 40 of which paid the $20.00 fee to park in Display. As the day progressed, the temperature moved into the 90’s. While attendees could find some shade, Jerry O’Donnell and Preston Dyer stuck out the heat to manage the gate throughout the event. Thanks to Jerry and Preston for “manning” the gate throughout the day in the heat.

a wide selection of donated items to be auctioned for our Club Charity, “Semper Fi”. I understand the silent auction raised over $1500.00 for Semper Fi. We had at least three photographers circulating the field, Gary Labb, Paul Novotne and Joe Barnet. Go to the PCAOCR.com website for more great photos taken at the Concours. Thanks, Gentlemen! We had many of our Club sponsors on the field including Circle Porsche and Walter’s Porsche who brought several of their latest models for display. Other sponsors on the field included Autowerkes, Autobahn Interiors, Cape Auto, Cooper’s Classy Car Care, Fairway Mortgage Capital, GMG, Hagerty Insurance, Porsche Design, Sierra Madre Collection and LoJack. Most of these sponsors offer discounts at the event, and will continue to do this, so be sure and mention the Orange Coast Region during your transaction. It was a beautiful day, and, in spite of the heat, most people enjoyed seeing the incredible array of Porsches, from the classics to the latest models. Thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and to everyone that attended the Concours. See you next year.

The Curious Adventures of your faithful Scribe at the Porsche Parade 2016
Concours Cars on the Fairway at Jay Peak
The Porsche Parade is the annual nationwide gathering of the faithful adherents to the Porsche Club of America. It is a moveable feast and the club does just that; move. It hop scotches the country, year-by-year. The hope is that by making it accessible to various geographies within these here United States, it will ultimately allow practically all Porsche Club of America members the opportunity to attend. This year the locale selected was Jay Peak, Vermont. And just how does one get to Jay Peak? A question that is more difficult to answer than one might at first suspect. Like the caterpillar said to Alice, “you can’t get there from here”. Which means no direct flights, from anywhere, to Jay Peak. Mrs. Cooper and I got there by going to New York (the scene of the crime some 35 years ago when I first met her) and then driving north, way north, and then north some more. You go north until you find yourself surrounded by people who talk funny, and wave these odd flags with the maple syrup symbol on them. This causes you to realize you are in Canada. Then, you turn around and drive back south 15 to 20 minutes and chances are you’ll be in Jay Peak, Vermont.

BEAR NECESSITIES
On the way to the Parade, Mrs. Cooper and I were in our rented “sports car”, a Toyota Camry, doing about 70 miles per hour, when we had a near collision with a certain ebony hirsute quadruped. This translates to a Black Bear. It ran onto the freeway from our left and in two leaps was right in front of our vehicle. My traveling companion screamed, the bear and I locked eyes, and all seemed set for an instant diminishing of the local population of Ursidae. I gave the brakes a quick shot and shifted steering to the left… the bear, for his part, hit a quicker step and we just missed calamity. If there is a Bear Olympics, I have a candidate for the 100 yard all American Bear freeway dash. We’ll just have to find him or her; it may still be on the run.
CHECKING IN, SIR?
When arriving at the Jay Peak Resort we saw Porsche flags everywhere. What was curious is that on the way into the resort, we didn’t see a single Porsche on the road. But on the grounds there were plenty of Porsches, old and new, to ogle. Playing on the resort channel and various screens around the resort, was a looping video regarding the new 991.2
Porsche generation. And lo and behold our very own GREG LUSH was a featured player in the tape! He and an another Zone 8 member were invited guests to the Fontana Speedway to experience the new car and comment. Greg was concerned that the classical Porsche sound would be compromised with the new turbocharging design for the motor. In the video, he states that the new car is in every sense, including aural, a Porsche. Be proud of the Orange Coast Region and our President! In a still curiouser incident, Mrs. Cooper and I managed to arrive a day EARLY for the Parade. Now, the only other time that Mrs. Cooper has been early was for her premature birth. This took place some years ago, exactly how long ago is a closely guarded secret. If you want to cause problems in the hospitality industry, just show up early for a reservation. It is not in their lexicon of issues, almost everyone with good sense is LATE, never early. But after much data entry, and telephone interaction with “management”, we ourselves managed to be checked in.
WELCOME TO VERMONT
The next day, we were met by the rest of our brave little band: Salomon and Jacquie Braun, Jay and Marjorie
(don’t call me Marge!) Warren, and Mark and Tina Trewartha. The six of us had rented adjoining condos and were going to team up on the Parade. I am still proud that Mrs. Cooper’s suitcase, the “Widowmaker”, is the largest portmanteau of all! Although, I can’t deny that my back does complain from time to time. I’m thinking that when it is worn out, I will dump it in the ocean for a second life as an artificial reef.
WHAT’D YOU DO THERE?
The first evening is the welcome banquet. This is by tradition and weather permitting held outdoors. Imagine 1,100 people all Porsche nuts outdoors queuing up for a buffet line, actually 4 buffet lines. It actually works well enough and it is a great way to mix with the other folks from all over the country. Porsche usually introduces something new, or “sort of” new at the Parade and this year it was the 911R. It looked great and sounded great. Over a chocolate chip cookie, I decided that I’d forgo the cookie for a 911R, which is saying a lot because I really like chocolate chip cookies. Next day was Concours day. This was held on the fairways of the Jay Peak golf course. I don’t know why, but beautiful cars and grass just work. None of these cars will ever drive on grass and weren’t even designed with any type of turf in mind! But, polish them up and put them on the lawn, and their beauty of design and purpose comes through with an unmistakable clarity. My favorite car on display was a Pre A 356 that had been purchased new in 1955 or 1956, spent 10 years driving around San Diego and then, after a minor fender bender went into storage for 50 years, through two owners! Ultimately, a third owner restored the car in about 2006. Quite a story, and quite a car. Of course, with the golf tournament we had the only rainy, cold day of the
event! Since the course wends its way around mountain tops the exposure to the elements were literally in our face all day. Are golf balls biodegradable? But the tournament ended with a buffet and they had… chocolate chip cookies. All was well. We were joined by the Warrens, or at least half of them by The remarkable odyssey of this car begins in San Diego, runs through 50 the time the end of the years of storage, and ends as a beautifully restored Concours machine in tournament. Although Jay Peak, Vermont we didn’t win, we were not last, quite and cold. The factory itself….ah! No an achievement in arctic conditions. surprise that Ben & Jerry’s is set up for Mrs. Cooper won the “Closest to the visitors and also no surprise that one Hole” award for being very accurate on can buy ice cream right there, literally a par 3. I won……..nothing. I did get as it comes out of the pipe. Which of course we did. Cherry Garcia, anyone? the cookie.
PORSCHE PAUCITY
At this point, I must admit that it is strange to show up for the Porsche Parade with no Porsche. Many of the events involve driving activities and there is a special joy in participating in colorful lines of Porsches driving over the road together. It somehow just doesn’t feel the same in a Camry, no slur on the Camry meant. The little Toyota from Virginia (it had Virginia plates) starts, runs, steers, and stops. All the essentials. However, a Porsche it ain’t. So, you feel a trifle out of place lining up behind a 911 and in front of a Boxster. Just not fitting into the picture. Kind of like wearing brown shoes with a tuxedo.
ICE CREAM NIRVANA
So, Vermont is famous for the Green Mountain Boys, and ice cream. In this case “Ben & Jerry’s”. Mrs. Cooper may not be the most devoted of fans for automobiles, but she sure does know her ice cream. This meant that one fine day we saddled up and drove over to the fountain of all things flavorful
18!
With superb timing, the Le Mans 2016 race concluded during the Parade with a victory for Porsche in the top class. This win was one of the most surprising for our favorite marque as it actually came on the last lap of a full 24 hours of racing when the lead Toyota, rolled to a stop with no power! Allowing the second place Porsche to sweep through to victory. Always one of the fastest on lap time, the Porsches had to pit more frequently than the Toyotas, allowing Toyota to gradually build up a lead until that last fateful lap. As a racer once said, “to finish first, you must first finish”. Congratulations, Porsche!
CONGRATULATIONS OCR! It was with special pride that I represented the OCR region to pick up OUR TROPHY for best regional magazine within our class! I’d like to close this article with a special thanks to the OCR Pando team. Hooray to you, and a special thanks to all of our members who have submitted articles about their own adventures.

The 24 hours of Le Mans has come and gone, with Porsche, Ford, Audi, and almost everyone winning something. Panorama will cover it much better than I. Pete Stout, Editor-in-Chief of PCA’s Porsche Panorama from late 2012-June 2016, has resigned and left us. Luckily, he left us with a fantastic magazine that is informative, fun to look at, and one that some of us ‘motor heads’ can really use to get into the technical articles. That was no easy task. I can only say THANK YOU PETE for your work & WELL DONE. We wish him the best for his future.

that “turbo” label on your Porsche’s backside. Today with strong batteries and wheel driven motor-generators systems that have instant energy available to spin up any electrical motor INSTANTLY, EPC (Electrical Driven Compressor) has arrived. Now to spin the turbocharger’s compressor up to maximum speed, and do it instantly. The new ‘CV’ has 4-balls on each side instead of 3 as we have had for 40 years. Lower weight, lower inertia, =faster acceleration, stronger and lasts longer. See www.gkndriveline.com
How soon will we see this on a car? Audi 2017 SQ7 V8 bi-turbo with TDI will come with “electric compressor” but, I’ll bet Porsche does it even better….. No more “turbo lag”? IN THE NEWS
A lot of new ideas are coming as fast as the technical writers can write about them. One is the never ending need for stronger engine parts to cope with the enormous combustion pressures of critical air/fuel ratios, DFI, turbochargers, high compression and higher combustion efficiency must operate in more harsh environments than ever. Now, peak combustion chamber pressure is up over 2,300 PSI and temperatures reach over 2,000°C. SAE reports of a new technique keeping piston temperatures low enough to last. They are now forming a hollow circular gallery up into the top of the piston and injecting oil pressure in it with an oil spray jet. Isn’t it just August 2016 | PANDO 31

amazing how they are now coming up with this? There is a lot more to all this, but one point I want to make is our little Porsche car company beat them to this one too. Forty-six years ago! All 911s, from 1970 on, have the underside of each piston cooled by an oil jet “squirter.” Back in the mid 1980’s, Porsche was doing serious piston internal oil cooling with an oil jet that sprayed a jet of oil directly into the piston’s internal oil galley. This helped cool the 956 and 962 turbocharged race engines and their twin turbo race motors. See images

mounted not so prominently and sticking up in the air. I replaced my 1980s Denso compressor with a later one for the 993 model as this compressor is smaller and fits with the older 964 turbo aluminum mounting brackets and fits with clearance (away from the intake manifold). The two significant upgrades are the later DENSO Compressor 964.126.121.01 and using the shorter Carrera Compressor Plate 930.126.118.01. This is not just a bolt-on upgrade, but requires some simple cutting and welding fabrication on the Carrera compressor plate. : I am replacing my 911 TURBO front fuel pump. I am interested in the later fuel pump everyone is talking about. Should I get one of these instead of the original one? Do you think this as a good idea?
Q
: The fuel pump I am using and am recommending is the BOSCH FP-200 Part Number 0 580 254 044 also used by Porsche on their 993 GT-2 part Nr. 993.620.104.80. The “-044” pump is larger. Everything is LARGER! The pump is 60 mm in diameter and near 200 mm length. The -044 delivers 5 to 8 BAR fuel Pressure. The -44 has larger electrical terminal studs; an M6 ground stud and an M5 Positive 12VDC stud and needs larger nuts, and lock washers.
A
*I highly recommend a red silicone boot to cover the positive stud and hardware! The FUEL INLET is larger. The -044 fuel pump inlet fitting is a screw in “threaded male barb fitting” with a 18 X 1.52mm pump inlet and made for 10mm inside diameter hose from the fuel tank. It is also called a “Cohline

Letter from the Editor Continued From Page 7 Mr. Braun’s mobile phone with him as it had been left in their vehicle. As Mr. Braun was at the front of the attendees and I was at the back, Mr. Warren handed the phone to me requesting that I give it to Mr. Braun when the session was over. I took the phone and put it into my back pocket. After a few moments, the rapt but quiet audience was disturbed by a loud, annoying cell phone ringing in my general area. I looked around for the culprit as he seemed to be right behind me, but didn’t notice anyone. I then checked my own phone to make sure I had indeed put it on quiet mode. I had. I then glanced around to the hostile stares at me and gestured back…..it ain’t me! To make my point, I glared back, always a good tactic to further perturb people. One moment later the cell phone went off again. This was too much for both the audience and the speaker. He paused and looked in my direction with that “who do you think you are” kind of look reserved usually for dweebs, dorks, and dunces. Of which of these I was none! Totally convinced of my innocence I raised both hands with shrugged shoulders looking skywards, that universal gesture of “not me” but whoever it is better watch out……again a moment later the same incessant tone, stridently loud and clamoring for attention. For “Pete’s sake” the man next to me said, “can’t you just turn that thing off if you’re not going to answer it”!? I drew myself up to full height and replied haughtily, “I don’t know who Pete is, but I assure you that’s NOT MY PHONE”! THEN I REMEMBERED. I had that cold dawning realization that comes over you when you are just about to experience humiliation, embarrassment, and loss of dignity, in front of a large group of people. I reached into my back pocket and retrieved Mr. Braun’s phone; with all eyes on me, I pulled the squalling little plastic rectangle 38 PANDO | August 2016
out. I continued holding it up and ceremoniously clicked it to silent so that all could see. Looking around for a hole to crawl into (there was no such luck) I managed the weakest of smiles to my neighbor, Pete’s friend, and said, “honestly that’s not my phone”. His return look carried the unsaid question of, “right, that’s how it got into your back pocket, I’m sure”. Total guilt as adjudged by my peers. I wish there had been a hole big enough for crawling into.
Trophy Time!
But wait, there’s more….and this time your own “Pando” magazine was given first place in our class by a jury of our peers and fellow regions. I am so proud of this and you should be as well. The award is based upon a matrix of criteria but one of the strongest of these are the contributions of club members to the magazine. It has been such a pleasure to read the ramblings, musings, and adventures of our club members. We have had many contributors over the past few years for which we are grateful. So, take a bow! You earned it! I would also mention the rest of the Pando team here, shake their hand or give ‘em a hug when you see them, as they are officially the “best”: Production Manager: Kristen Jaoui Advertising Co-Directors: Cooper Boggs and Nicole Boggs Classified Advertising Editor: Bob Weber Technical Writer: Lee Rice
I also want to mention people not on the masthead who contribute regularly with technical assistance on art and layout, Denny Asbury…and editing/ correcting…Gary Labb, C.L. Jarusek, Monica Asbury, Marcia Salans, and Gloria Moore. Way to go gang!
A Note From the Production Manager
Hi folks, Kristen Jaoui here. I’m stealing a bit of Garey’s space to add in my two cents on our recent award. I’ll try my best not to make this sound like an Oscar acceptance speech. When I began to work on Pando two years ago, everyone was ready for a new direction... we just weren’t quite sure what that direction was! I remember Gloria, Garey, and I trying our best to put something together in time for print. Well, I think we’ve come along way since then. Thank you to everyone who have called to say, “congratulations!”, or have sent me such nice emails. It really does mean so much! But I can’t take all (or even a little) of the credit. As Garey mentioned above, it “takes a village” to get Pando together each month. First, thank you to those who have submitted articles in the last two years. I have learned so much from your articles and have thoroughly enjoyed our conversations as we get your articles ready for print. A special thank you to our regular contributors. Auto-X team, Lee Rice, Sandy Schwartz, Gerry Crews, and Bob Weber, your regular additions are the nuts and bolts that keep the magazine together. Secondly, thank you our photographers! Mike Knudsen, besides your great photography, thank you for teaching me so many tips and tricks. Paul Novotne and Gary Labb, I’m sure you would like to just sit around and enjoy an event just one time, but I am beholden to you for your never-ending stream of photos. Lastly, thank you to the Pando team. Congratulations on this award as it is a testament to the amount of work you put in every month. In the words of the thirteenth doctor from Doctor Who, “We’re all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?” Thank you for letting us help you tell your story.
