PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greg Lush

TheArt ofGiving W

hen the thought of writing a message around “giving”, I hesitated, as you would need to look far and wide to find an PCAOCR member which was not routinely giving in some way. It has been my experience over the years that folks who join a social club are good people keenly interested in participating and providing for their community. We see these as volunteers assemble and gladly execute their tasks at a wide range of events. This quote from Erich Fromm (German social psychologist, psychoanalyst, sociologist, humanistic philosopher 1900-1980) does a fine job expressing what I suspect to be many of our feelings: “Give others all that is alive in us—our interest, understanding, our knowledge, our humor, everything in us that’s good. In doing so, we enhance the sense of aliveness in others while enhancing our own. When we give, we get a “heightened vitality” of what it means to be human.”

While I have you all in a fine altruistic fog, let me ease into a conversation about giving to charities as an extension of PCAOCR. For over 100 years (before the creation of the 501c7 as part of the Revenue Act of 1913) the IRS has provided an opportunity to run as a tax exempt organization. Here is the definition of a 501c7: [A 501(c)(7) organization is a social or recreational club that is organized for pleasure, recreation, and other nonprofit purposes. Members must share interests and have a common goal directed toward pleasure and recreation, and the organization must provide opportunities for personal contact among members]

Many of you may be thinking, why aren’t we a 501c3? The simple answer is that we do not qualify as our charter is specific to a social club (as dictated by PCNA). Not that I am a fan of quoting IRS information in an article; however, seeing the contrast and definition may provide some perspective, here is the definition of a 501c3: [501(c)(3) tax-exemptions apply to entities that are organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes, or for testing for public safety, or to foster national or international amateur sports competition, or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals. 501(c)(3) exemption applies also for any non-incorporated community chest, fund, cooperating association or foundation that is organized and operated exclusively for those purposes]

The winds of change have been blowing for a few years and have increased over the last decade as a result of some “bad players” taking advantage of the system following the 9/11attacks. We were notified the first of the year that our wonderful State of California was leading the way and placing additional parameters around qualification requirements to maintain our 501c7 status. In a nutshell, these changes impact us as related to collecting, advertising, participating with charities (IE: Semper Fi, silent auctions, etc.). We are working with PCNA to determine how to distribute the money collected year-to-date and have been working on some ways to assist those which still want to donate. We are excited to continue with our Hearts and Garages tour (a large contributor to charities in the past) as this progressive

dinner is a favorite amongst our members. It is unfortunate when the actions of a few have a negative impact on so many, those of us who find joy in contributing and especially the recipients of these charitable groups. I know that Annie and I, while disappointed in the losing the convenience of giving to a sponsored charity via PCA-OCR, our resolve to help others remains unchanged.

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

Essential Buyers Guide – PORSCHE 986 Boxster

&

Essential Buyers Guide – PORSCHE 911 (996) Both books are by Adrian Streather and published by Veloce Publishing, Dorset, England. These books are part of an extensive British series of ‘buyers guides’ for mostly ‘sporty’ cars and motorcycles. Some of the guidance is generic – ‘make sure the vehicle numbers match the paperwork’, ‘place a magnet on the bodywork; if it doesn’t stick find out why’, etc. But a great deal is very specific including features distinguishing MkI Boxsters from MkII. At $25 for a 64 page paperback, these books may seem pricey. But through specific guidance or by stimulating a buyer-beware-mentality, they could prevent mistakes easily ten or 100 times more costly. With this in mind, chapter 9 of these books consists of a comprehensive check list of features that should be considered and a system for scoring the condition of any vehicle being considered. The books also include a useful list of questions to ask the seller and an entire chapter on key points to inspect on each car/model. Directed at car buyers not Porsche enthusiasts, these books offer suggestions of comparable automobiles to consider. There is even an entire chapter on how to determine ‘is this the right car for you?’, by checking headroom, legroom, insurance costs, garage space

requirements, luggage capacity, service availability, repair costs, etc. Unique to these books are tables of relative value for every year-model-configuration. The guidance, though often specific, is presented in a casual, conversational tone; not negative but very cautionary about all the possible pitfalls, financial and life style, in the ownership of either of these models. Definitely designed to give the reader second thoughts about a purchase before, rather than after, completion of the sale. Recommended tools of inspection include mirror-on-astick, “Torch”, and a digital camera or cell phone with camera function. Including a second pair of eyes, coupled to a brain with a different perspective on purchase, is also a worthwhile suggestion. There are seventeen chapters, ranging from ‘Is it the Right Car for You?’ through ‘Before You View’ to ‘Vital Statistics’. The Vital Statistics chapter contains enough data to satisfy the most nerdy of Porsche enthusiasts. The Boxster book provides data on, among other things, the 3 engine types as well as 6 transmissions and the weights of 6

different configurations. The 996 (911) book includes 11 headings, 8 brakes, 7 basic model dimensions and 9 different model weights. Tire section lists 16 types for the 996, with such arcane info as that Michelin Pilot Sport N1 is approved only for 2w drive. The Boxster book lists 21 approved tires distributed amongst the three wheel sizes. Each book is 64, 5-3/4 x 7-3/4 inch pages, with a detailed index and 5 pages of ads. These guides are very worthwhile for anyone contemplating purchase of a Porsche model that they’re not personally familiar with. The comprehensive statistical information is potentially worthwhile to a current owner. These books should be available from your favorite bookseller (ask for them) or from quartoknows.com. Note that by the time you read this, the 996 book may be ‘out of print’. If so, the 997 books (Gen1 and Gen2) should be very adequate alternatives. June 2017 | PANDO 9

Pasha Missaghi 21 minutes ago It’s not always about cars, sometimes it’s about supporting friends. Here at donate life run

Annual DonateL ife : Remembering our PCA-OCR Member Sergey Zherebnenko And My Own Journey as a Recipient of Organ Tissue Donations The day wasn’t about Porsches or Cars & Coffee, but PCA OCR people participating for a worthwhile cause. The forecast for Saturday, April 29th, was all about an unseasonal Santa Ana wind with plenty of sun and warm temperatures. But more important, it was the day for the 15th Annual Donate Life Run-Walk. We were there to honor organ and tissue donors that gave of themselves to save and improve the lives of so many others. For the Wolfpack, it was also an opportunity to remember our friend Sergey Zherebnenko, who we miss; but in his passing, donated both eyes, tissue, muscle, and bone that improved the lives of more than twenty people in need. 16 PANDO | June 2017

Donate Life is the organization that’s responsible for the organ and tissue donor registry. Most people who have signed up as donors did so at the DMV when applying for a driver’s license. It’s that pink dot on your license. There are currently over 13,500,000 signed up as organ and tissue donors in California and over 23,000 people on the list waiting for an organ. Unfortunately, over 7,000 of the people on the list will pass away while waiting. Due to a variety of factors, only 1 out of 250 donors will qualify as an organ donor; but beyond the eight organs one person can donate to fifty others with skin, eyes, corneas, muscle, tendons, and bone. There is no such thing as somebody who is too old or too ill to exclude them from being a donor. In the fall of 2010, I was placed on the waiting list for an organ. After years of suffering from heart failure caused by

eight heart attacks, which then caused other issues, I needed a heart and kidney transplant. After almost a year attached to a battery driven portable heart pump, on January 8, 2012, I received the organs that saved my life. Both organs came from a 46-year old male somewhere in Central California. That’s all that I know of this person, other than I owe my life to his decision to donate, and he must have loved cars and going fast. Since the transplant, I’ve pursued the things that I always wanted to do but never seemed to have the time, and other things seemed more important. Nothing like a life changing experience to alter your perspective and priorities, and it’s a special experience to live with part of another as yourself. For me, six months in cooking school with a very French chef, and as much time as I can, driving and racing cars. Saturday drives, AX, and my true love, being on the track. Got to drive my GT3 at COTA last year and

by the time this goes to press, will have gotten a few days at Big Willow in my just completed 2007 Cayman race car. Beyond that, doing volunteer work for Donate Life, where I speak to different groups on the value of being and organ and tissue donor, is a focus. So, if you’re me, every day is a great day and the Run-Walk is an opportunity to be thankful and celebrate life. This year, I decided to share the event with my friends from the OCR and create Team Wolfpack. I was able to acquire a sponsor (who asked to remain anonymous) who paid for the team’s entry fee along with a significant donation to Donate Life. A special thanks to those who attended; and to those who weren’t able to attend made cash donations. With twenty-six OCR members registered, we met at our assigned team area at Cal State Fullerton amongst the

DRIVING SKILLS

The Traction Circle The previous article was about driving corners fast and we focused on driving the ideal line through a corner. Today we will be discussing the very heart of all driving The Traction Circle. It is very important that every driver understands exactly what the traction circle is and how you can make changes to your car and driving style that will maximize and help you to stay within the your Porsche’s traction circle.

The traction circle is the basis for understanding all the aspects of driving. It affects the driving line, and it most importantly affects how you drive your car. To understand the basics of performance driving, one must understand that there is only so much traction each tire has to the driving surface.

To help us understand this concept clearly, we will use a simple X-Y axis graph. The X (horizontal) axis will show the available grip for making left and right turns; the Y (longitudinal) axis will show the available acceleration and braking grip.

Story by Don Chapman

FULL ACCELERATION

LEFT TURN

RIGHT TURN

FULL BRAKING

The Traction Circle is simply a way to graphically illustrate how the tires maximum traction can be developed in any direction. It is an essential teaching tool that helps to demonstrate the basic limits of driving fast.

This takes us back to the “how to drive faster theme”.

To put it simply, you can use 100% of the tires available traction in braking. You can use 100% of the tires available traction for accelerating. You can use 100% of the tires traction while cornering. But you cannot use 100% for cornering and 100% for braking at the same time. In fact, you cannot even use 1% for braking if you are already using 100% for cornering.

For example, as you begin braking in a straight line for a corner, you can use 100% of the tires traction for braking. When you reach the turn-in point and begin to turn the steering wheel, you must ease off the brakes- transitioning from 100% braking through 50% braking/50% cornering (Trail Braking), to 100% cornering. Once you hit the apex of the corner and you start to unwind the wheel, the tires available traction can start to be used for accelerating-Shifting the traction circle from 100% cornering traction through 50% cornering/50% acceleration to 100% acceleration.

It seems obvious, but you can only use 100% of the tires traction no more!

20 PANDO | June 2017

Circle of Traction

So, obviously, to keep your Porsche firmly planted to the ground you must stay within your vehicles traction circle.

So you ask, how does the traction circle help me with driving fast? To be fast, you ideally want to use 100% of the tires available traction at all times.

Circle of Traction

FULL ACCELERATION ACCELERATING OUT OF A RIGHT TURN

LEFT TURN

RIGHT TURN

FULL BRAKING

As you can see from this diagram, you must give up some acceleration and cornering traction to stay at the limit of the car as you travel through the corner. As you move needle closer to the maximum cornering traction you must give up more and more in acceleration. Conversely, as you exit the corner and begin to straighten out the steering input, this diagram shows that a steady increase of throttle can be applied as you approach full acceleration traction.

A Special Warning to all track neophytes, you do not want to take your new Porsche out on the track and immediately go for the 100% traction limit. Start off using somewhere around 50% of your Porsche’s available grip on the track and increase your speed as you gain the necessary skills to handle the vehicle once it goes beyond the maximum traction available, and begins to slide.

Our Drivers Education (DE) program is an amazing way to learn and practice these driving skills on an actual track. You will be assigned a driving instructor and classes will be provided throughout the day. These track days are designed to help everyone learn his or her own limits. Practice will help you to recognize the sights, sounds and feel of your Porsche as it approaches the limits of available traction. As you better your driving skills, you will gradually get closer and closer to using 100% of your vehicle’s available traction circle. And of course, that translates into driving faster!

If you constantly think about the traction circle concept, you will be more likely to drive faster and spend more time at the car’s limit.

My 2017

California Festival of Speed Experience

Story by Garey Cooper Photos by Joe Barnet Gary Labb & Garey Cooper

“Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG”…. good verbal exercise for a loudspeaker system designed to be heard above about 40 NASCAR Racers!

History of California Festival of Speed Since 2003, there’s been a Festival in Fontana, California, at what is now called “Autoclub Speedway”. Initially, the brainchild of Vince Knauf and a few other visionaries from the San Diego Region of PCA. It’s evolved to include the entire Zone 8 and drivers from the Porsche Owners Club (POC). It’s held in April and includes club races, a Time Trial event (TT), and many fan friendly activities within the extensive grounds of the Speedway. Racers are always looking for pavement to run on, and the Speedway definitely has it! However, pavement to run on is expensive to rent. So, the organizers 24 PANDO | June 2017

2016 vs. 2017 realized they needed more revenue than the typical race from run fees usually generated from a club weekend. Thus, the idea of a Zone wide “Festival” was created. It’s prospered since that time with a mix of on track racing and infield attractions based upon Porsche and Automotive life styles. It’s been held over three days in April with Saturday being the busiest day of attendance. Having been the 2016 track announcer, I was surprised when I was re-invited for 2017. After several seconds of reflection, I accepted the honor and began to practice by saying over and over again;

Last year the weekend was uncharacteristically rainy and cold. Friday was almost a washout, Saturday a little better, and Sunday just being plain cold and windy so attendance in 2016 was dampened (pun intended). Maybe that’s how I snuck in for this year’s encore announcing performance.

How About 2017 ?

This year the weather was very cooperative - warm / hot and WINDY. In fact, on the afternoon of Sunday it was so windy the bathroom doors, designed to open outward on the lofty 4th floor of the central tower where the announcer’s

booth is located, was either snatched out of your hand by the wind, or you were violently rotated around the door hinge and slammed into the opposite wall, glasses and dignity flying in the process. Forget any kind of comb over staying in place as well. The announcer’s booth is absolutely grand for viewing the track and the environs surrounding the track. This kind of seat would cost big bucks in any race as you can literally see the entire racing surface in air conditioned comfort! Panoramic and at the same time, lonely, quite small and insulated, as it’s a “sound proof booth” which is good, for the acoustics certainly, but leads to a very disconnected feeling when announcing. You speak into the mic, but you can’t hear anything other than your own quiet voice in a small windowed place. Outside your voice is booming to the foothills and back of course, but inside you can only hear a

pin drop. So any feedback comes in the form of texts or mobile phone calls, “you’re coming across just fine” is an example which is my favorite. I tried a test announcement. Wow! I think my first announcements blew tiles off roofs miles away in Ontario. Way too loud! I thought I’d get calls from Ontario Airport saying planes landing heard me and requested different landing patterns as a result. Fortunately, volume-wise, everything got sorted out and we were off……to the races!

CFOS

CFOS is a three day speed fest with on track racing and in track displays and vendors. You can relish the sight of GT3 Cup Cars and modern GT3 RSR’s along with early pattern 911’s, 944’s, Spec Boxsters and Caymans being driven at high speed. In no particular order here are the things you can do at CFO: June 2017 | PANDO 25

Volunteer, Autocross, sample amongst the various food trucks, view the 50 year 911 timeline, view the race cars and drivers much closer than you can at any

other event. Buy stuff (includes jewelry made from crashed cars), talk Porsche with many of your fellow addicts and/or get your Porsche Dyno’d. It’s a wonderful weekend when the weather is cooperating and a “must see”

26 PANDO | June 2017

for any of our PCA-OCR members. I had the pleasure meeting up with Scott Mann, the Chief Zone driving instructor, Greg Lush our own OCR President, Vince Knauf the man himself who helped start it all off; Tom Brown, current CFOS Chair, and Vickie Earnshaw the Queen of PCA Club Racing. Also stopping by the booth was Michael Dolphin long time friend and Zone eminence with young Malachi who I let practice his announcing skills. I also saw Steve and Michael Eguina, with Michael bringing along my old car, “Blanche Bickerson,” the 2007 GT3. Do I miss her? Yes! Please plan your next weekend in April 2018 to be at Fontana for this great event –

You’ll have a great time!

Awesome Porsche speed, passion and competitive spirit!

Volunteering at the

2017 California Festival of Speed

Story by Al Gutierrez / Photos by Joe Barnet I joined PCA-OCR last year with the dream of someday racing my 2002 911 Cabriolet. I started attending the monthly PCA-OCR member breakfasts and met many nice, friendly people, always very welcoming and willing to talk about their love of Porsche, as well as, answer any questions. I became familiar with the various Porsche websites, the events; and last June I volunteered to help setup the Concours in Fountain Valley. This was my first exposure to so many Porsches, and what a terrific experience! Then, I attended an Autocross in the fall and that did it for me - I was going to learn how to drive Autocross! By volunteering, I got to meet many Porsche owners who freely offered advice regarding ownership and racing; but mainly their message to me was to always have fun and enjoy the Porsche experience.

CFOS’ three day event was my first time volunteering. The thrill of being at a big track and seeing so many different Porsches was like being a kid all over again! I volunteered for the Traffic Control Group which has the responsibility for guiding everyone safely throughout the huge complex.

any mechanical issues. Additionally, I had to be aware of distracted spectators walking around and make sure they were consistently safe.

For my first day, Friday, I was assigned to the CFOS Event Entrance checking credentials. It was an awesome spot to see all the super Porsches come through, and I really enjoyed it. On the second day Saturday, I was at turn-9. The excitement of watching all the Porsches coming off the track, was like one colorful parade and absolutely thrilling. Third day Sunday, was the ultimate for me – “The Hot Pit”. I was given the responsibility of directing the drivers in their cars through the tunnel as they went to their respective garage area to resolve

In conclusion, I’d like to suggest to anyone interested in volunteering for CFOS to be flexible in their assignments, be prepared for heat, wear a hat and stay hydrated. Be patient and friendly toward everyone – you’ll have a fantastic time!

Cone Zone Update by Rob Greene

Thank you to all who have participated in the previous two cone zone series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. We’ll continue color exercise, model types and different types of equipment. A special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for this third color zone series.

June

The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows:

Are you wondering what “color sorting” is? Well, here are the suggested “rules”!

sorted and nearly everyone gets to park in a Cone Zone! We’ll try this for three meetings and then move on to Red, White and Blue for the July meeting.

• • • •

The first Porsche to arrive at Original Mike’s gets to park anywhere in the lot. The driver/passenger grabs a cone from the stack of cones and puts it in front of their car to establish the first color group. So, if the first car is red, all red cars should park in the same area.

Other months

• • • • •

June: “Color Sorting” July: Red, White, and Blue August: All Cabriolets September: All fixed rear wing Porsches (includes whale-tails, duckbills, Tequipment, aftermarket, GT-2, GT-3, auto-crossers etc.) October: Any Porsches with 15” – 17” diameter wheels November: Any Porsches with 18” diameter wheels December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels January 2018: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone – Attend the OCR Brunch! February 2018: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels

The next different colored car to arrive in the parking lot needs to park away from the first established group. The driver/passenger will put a cone in front of their car to establish the second color group. If the second different color car is blue, all blue cars should park in the same area, etc.

We hope July 2017 - February 2018 is self-explanatory. For July, anyone with a red, white, or blue Porsche can park in the Cone Zone. What better month to show off the topless group than August? September should provide a lot of different looks, from earlier Porsche whale tails to au currant GT-3 and 4 wings, original or after-market. Then the multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in OctoberDecember 2017 and February 2018 for all to see.

This process will continue until we run out of cones, colors, Porsches, or time. We end up with groups of colors, nicely

I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

Tony Napoli

Difference Maker

For the past eight years, PCA-OCR

member Tony Napoli, has been involved with the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, which assisted in starting the High School Inc. Program at Valley High School, and helped in the development and building of six state of-the-art vocational academies for students. One of these is the Automotive & Transportation Academy at Valley High School. Tony begins his story as a “Difference Maker” by praising the importance of Donnie Crevier and the late George P. Heidler as some of the first and most dedicated automotive industry professionals as catalysts for change, and the creation of the Automotive & Transportation Academy at Valley High School. The Academy is one of the only high school auto programs in Orange County certified through the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF). The Academy is filled with young men and women who are being expertly trained by master mechanic Saul Garcia. The students are passionate, always looking to grow and dedicated to an industry that provides a very bright outlook on the future ahead. Additionally, they have the opportunity to compete with other automotive school teams at various locations, and there’s also an all-girls team. The students can become Certified Automotive Technicians before they graduate from high school! Historically, in 2007/2008 because of the drastic level of poverty and need in the community, many of the students were unable to complete the program, or high school at all (with a graduation rate of roughly 63% in 2006/07), and often continued down a negative life path. Luckily, seeing the drastic need, the local business community moved in to help and the High School Inc. Foundation was born. Through a unique partnership between the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Ana Unified School District, members stepped up and out to form a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, serving as a financial resource for the students to participate in activities and projects otherwise unattainable. The Foundation has also become a bridge between the community and classroom, responsible for bringing in mentors, volunteers and support of all 30 PANDO | June 2017

kinds to light the way for these deserving kids. As an example, PCA-OCR’s Tony Napoli visits the Automotive & Transportation Academy at the Valley High School campus, and as a Business Advisor for the Automotive Academy, meets monthly and goes over events, budget, important programs and course work, volunteers to help with events and programs including the yearend class barbeque. There’s now a graduation rate of approx. 95% when completing the program (even with similar levels of poverty still in existence), proving that a little encouragement and sponsorship can change lives! Thanks to The Foundation’s initial support, students now participate in internships at successful automotive dealerships, manufacturers and industry-related companies where they learn first-hand what it would be like to own or manage their own auto shop/business. Additionally, students compete against other high school students in industry-sponsored competitions. Matriculation agreements have been established with local colleges to ensure successfully completed classes will transfer, and projects have been established to complement the curriculum with additional training and real-life practice. Students are able to participate in these hands-on learning projects because of fantastic partners like PCA-OCR, OCADA, Manheim-COX Automotive, ConditionReports.com, Fletcher Jones Newport Beach Mercedes, Tom’s Trucks and many others. Thanks to both community and industry support. The result is that more than double the number of students are able to compete in automotive competitions throughout the 2016/2017 year. There’s also assistance with the purchase of uniform essentials, bus passes and other student-specific items for success; otherwise, not available through the district. Additionally, these partnerships ensure the students have access to visit and intern at local automotive sites/auctions and leadership events such as two of the recent PCA-OCR Member Breakfasts at Original Mike’s in Santa Ana. It’s important to continue to support these kids through the High School Inc. Foundation and show them the road ahead can lead to a bright and successful future!

What’s In Your Garage? First Porsche by Scott Mahl

I recently bought a white 2015 991 GT3, after owning a white six-speed 997 Turbo, which was my first Porsche for a little over 5 years. I didn’t expect to purchase the GT3 since my Turbo was modified with the usual modifications and had about 600 hp and was only driven occasionally for fun. While I always liked the way the GT3 looked, I hadn’t really considered owning one until a friend of mine who owned a GT3 and then a GT3 RS, encouraged me to go look at one that Hoehn Porsche had in Carlsbad. After driving the GT3, I couldn’t believe how intoxicating the 9000 RPM redline was along with the PDK transmission. The sound from 7,000 to 9,000 RPM is addicting along with the quick shifts up and down from the dual clutch transmission. It is as if the car is an extension of my arms and it stirs my soul.

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

911 & GT-3

As you read this the 2017 24 Houres du LeMans will be history? Who will win? In the GT classes, the funny car 911 will again be ‘in the hunt’ and should win, I think, and certainly hope so.Their hot performance at Silverstone was noticed but NOT in the familiar manner.

The GT-3 LOOKS are just plain: FANTASTIC!. Yes, it is a big car but it looks so efficient and yet graceful. When the trend of performance cars seems to be fashioned with sharp edges, square slabsided cut-outs and integrated wings into the main body, and looks to be made by a giant cheese grinder???… Doesn’t it seem that

The amperage for the 930 turbo fuel pumps is high and causes the plastic of the “Made in China” relay to soften and almost melt, this one deformed the plastic cover which then blocks the electronic contacts inside the relay. This is really a dumb idea! These relays must be monitored and checked regularly.

2018 GT-3

This is a fighter cockpit 95% efficient!

Made in China Pink Relay

The hottest car at Geneva Show has to be the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3! I am saying this in spite of my friend Alois Ruf’s new CTR IV, which is fantastic to say the least, but at only 30 cars to be made at a sky high $791K is priced for collectors mostly. The CTR IV is almost not a driving car, but a jeweled item to live in a warm and securely sheltered life -SAD.

many cars these days are in love and adore the Robo-monster look? I’ve heard this trend is,”like a pig with lipstick.”

The turbo owner had a few “Made in Germany” Red relays, thanks to Alois Ruf and installed them. However, even the newest replacement relays are listed as “country or Origin:China,” - and the “Made in China” relays are more pink in color, than red.

However, the new 2018 GT-3 is a 911 to smile about. With a 500+ HP, the normally aspirated 4.0 Liter engine based on the racing 911 engines (?) and official top speed of only 198,…. Do you suppose the quoted speed under 200 is to anticipate the Turbo GT version to surely come along…. ? And the 2018 GT-3 is available at no extra cost with a SIX-SPEED MANUAL Transaxle! Great news! Somebody is listening at Porsche. However, the automatic two pedal fans can have their GT-3 as well.

Thankfully, Porsche has faith in aerodynamics-with-elegance, and also those who proudly buy and DRIVE them!

Porsche Round Relays

Last month I discussed those round relays found in all Porsche: Asked if the “Made in China” relay was as good as the ”Made in Germany” relay?. I stated as far as I can determine they are OK …Well, again I had a failure happen with a fellow 930 turbo owner . “It seems the fuel pump sounded funny.” And it did! The number one pump was the only one working and laboring to pump fuel through a dead #2 pump, or so it seemed. Swapping a new relay in #2 and the normal sweet “humm” of BOTH pumps running was heard and the turbo runs just fine.

I intend to do another more simple UpGrade (and later article - again!) for this problem and use factory GERMAN or AMERICAN Relays based on the later C-2 & 993 relay system. This is a SAFETY need for all 930 Turbos, and frankly, any Porsche using the round relays. ALSO, all 911 trunk Relay/Fuse panels MUST have a cover(s) over them. The engine compartment electric should have a cover as well. A light coat of white paint shows fuses, relays, and identity numbers SO much easier. Think of a dark, rainy night, and the micro lettering embossed on the black cover! Also, any over heating in the electrical compartment is readily apparent as well…… June 2017 | PANDO 37

All 911 trunk relay/Fuse panels must have a cover. 911 - 1974-1989 : Front Cover 911.612.161.08 shown.

Ask a Mechanic :

A light coat of white paint on cover identifies fuses, relays, and numbers more easily than on black.

Q

: I am in the end stages (hopefully) of resurrecting a 1971 911T that sat unused for more than 20 years. I’ve gone through and cleaned up the engine, resealing things that showed previous leaks. Had the 901 transaxle rebuilt, alternator and starter refreshed, and have replaced most of the weather stripping and seals. My last major projects are re-bushing the front control arms and the rear suspension components. Can you give me advice on a couple of things please. When removing the spring plates, it turned out that the torsion bars were stuck fast in the spring plate housings, releasing from the internal hubs. It took hours of adapting several gear pullers and drilling holes in the end cover plates to get a punch to the bars to pound out the bars, just to remove them from the car. It turns out that the torsion bars are salvageable, but the splines inside the spring plates are too rusted for reuse. Should I get replacements like these, or the newer adjustable kind, like Weltmeisters? I’m thinking of replacing front and rear bushings with Elephant Racing’s polybronze style of bushings rather than the solid rubber originals. Good idea? Also, their trailing arm monoballs instead of the standard types. I like the idea of a frictionless action vs the rubber twist and wear function. Do you have any experience using these components? They are pricey, but may be worth in the long run because of their grease fittings for servicing. Lastly, do torsion bars wear out? I’m not going to track a stock T, since it’s just for street use.

38 PANDO | June 2017

A

: Congratulations on your repair and upgrade to your 1971 911T. First I suggest you make a point when doing a service on your Porsche or an oil change to un-plug the engine compartment wiring harness connectors and look at the connecting pin contacts-both sides, male and female. Replacing the rear spring plates is necessary and unless you are going to be making suspension adjustments for performance driving or time trial, etc., I would go with the later 1976 - 911 adjustable spring plates for one simple reason: you have a light-weight 911 and after all suspension is replaced, ride height established where you like it with the wheels and tires you like, THEN you have a final alignment done with WEIGHT BALANCE adjustment. On late adjustable spring plates this is a simple procedure. On the earlier 911 non-adjustable spring plate it is a pain in the tail, I assure you, as I have done it many, many, times! You have to disconnect anti-roll bars, shocks etc. and pull the spring plate out and off the torsion bar to reset the torsion bar angel and go back through a resettling of the car’s suspension all over again before alignment and weight balance. The adjustable S.P. (Spring Plates) you simply reset height (weight) with special big wrenches, while on the alignment rack. ( See Smart Racing: “Ride Height Adjusting Wrench” P-909909 -$ 90.00) Fig 1: The thin yellow 24mm X 36mm wrench is for holding the eccentric

FIG 1 : The thin yellow 24mm X 36mm wrench is for holding the eccentric adjustment bolt, behind the spring plate.

adjustment bolt, behind the spring plate. Both 24mm self-locking nuts are torqued with a 24mm “crow foot” to 24MKP (177lbs Feet.)

• This is done after driving and setting

final ride height with wheels/tires installed and the crow foot is the only way to access the 24mm nuts and torque them.

I like the Weiltmeister screw bolt adjustable spring plate and found them great for making small adjustments. The 1976 and later adjustable Spring Plates have a limited adjustment and we like to set them for the highest ride height setting then adjust the torsion bar to the spring plate for our basic desired weight balance and ride-height setting. Then bolt everything up, do a basic alignment, and trim height with the adjusters. Now get the suspension “settled.” : A 20 minute drive exercising your new suspension on pot holes, speed bumps, and roller coaster roads: (in West O.C.: G.G. Fry (22) to Studebaker Rd. South to Loynes Dr. and on to P.C.H. And hang on!) Seriously, it must be driven cautiously on your first drive there. Then your 911 is “settled” and a final weight adjustment and alignment can be checked, “trimmed” if necessary and it all stays put. However, before any of this alignment or weight balancing, you must have the trunk fit as you will normally drive it: spare wheel/tire, tools, spare parts, battery charger, oil to add over time? Then

fuel weight: at least a half tank of fuel, I find is best. Tires, if new, should have at least a few hundred miles on them and are well balanced with the air pressures established where you like them. Anti-Roll Bars from factory are non adjustable and can screw up a perfect weight balance and alignment. So, I recommend front and rear fully adjustable Anti-Roll Bars (A.R.B.) PS: they are NOT “Sway Bars.” I personally use 22 mm front and rear fully adjustable bars. When doing weight balance and before ride height /weight balance and alignment. You DISCONNECT one link on the front A.R.B. and one link on the rear A.R.B. This way no influence from the A.R.B. is effecting the weight or alignment.

ONLY AFTER ALL WEIGHT BALANCE and ALIGNMENT are set, are the A.R.B.’s adjusted and connected!

Remember, the Anti-Roll Bars are actually a torsion bar (spring).

• The later Porsches have adjustments

for small trimming alignment but early Porsches have non-adjustable A.R.B. and cannot, therefore, make accurate weight balancing. For street and road Porsches, I do not like plastic or steel mono-ball or Teflon suspension bushings. They squeak and make groaning sounds and are stiff to get bedded in. The late hard rubber bushings work fine. I use NEATRIX ® bushings.

Mono-ball and bronze bushings are required for maintaining alignment within a fraction of a degree for wide 12”+ tires to maintain them flat against the track surface –which are usually very smooth artificial road surface. This is fine for racing and where critical racing alignment is a must. However, for street and real road surfaces needs a suspension /chassis with wide compliance. This is mandatory for handling on a wide variety of road surfaces. The racing bushings are not for roads and street use, not at all! And they are very expensive and normal maintenance is to replace them frequently. We try our best to respond to inquires, comments, opinions, and questionsWe do. Try us. Godspeed
