PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Barry Michaels

Long Days & Short Nights. In the words of Al Bernstein, “Spring being a hard act to follow, God created June.” June, of course, is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year and it seems to me the mix of light versus darkness is perfect on the summer solstice. For all of Earth’s creatures, nothing is so fundamental as the length of the day, and it has been universal among humans to treasure this time of warmth and light. Somehow both sunrises and sunsets at the beach are quieter, more peaceful, and more beautiful. Speaking of beauty, please join Concours Chair Norm Follis and Head Judge Steve Fairbanks at the 49th annual OCR White Glove Concours d’Elegance on June 15th at Sea Terrace Park in Dana Point. In addition to viewing 150+ Porsches on display or being judged, you can enjoy a catered taco bar, participate in the picnic display competition, and enjoy the comradery of fellow OCR and Zone 8 members. Since 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the 914, and we expect participation from the 914 Registry members within our special 914 corral and display area. Denise and I recently returned from attending Treffen Santa Barbara with five other OCR members. The weather was terrific, as was touring the back roads of the Santa Ynez and Los Alamos valleys as well as portions of San Luis Obispo county. We look forward to attending Treffen Vermont, based at the historic Woodstock Inn & Resort in September, as well as the 2020 Treffens scheduled for April at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, and in September at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Golfers will certainly want to bring their clubs to both of these venues. The next PCA National

event will be our large event of the year, Porsche Parade, to be held at the luxurious Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf Astoria resort. Having lived in Coral Gables for a bit, I can guarantee there’s nothing quite like south Florida heat and humidity in July. It’s not too late to register for the Parade. It’s always more special to drive your Porsche at these events, but if the distance is too great a good alternative is to simply fly and rent a car. Most events don’t require a Porsche to participate. We won’t drive or ship our Porsche to the 2019 Parade, but will rent whatever car has the best air-conditioning. If you can’t handle high humidity, then please consider joining us at next year’s Parade, to be held at the La Quinta Resort and Club. Yes, the common theme seems to be heat; it was 100 degrees last year in the Ozarks, and 100 degrees the year before in Spokane. If you can’t make one of these events, then join us at the monthly breakfast meeting, where in addition to the comradery of fellow OCR members you can indulge in the custom attire creations offered in our Goodie Store. Please regularly check our event calendar for activities, and take note our next autocross will be June 29th. While our events offer something for everyone, the best part of PCA membership is the friendships formed along the way. .

Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

THE DRIVING FORCE by Peter W. Schutz, published 2005 by LeadershipPublishing.com, Naples, Florida. The late Peter Schutz was CEO of Porsche AG from 1981 to 1987, the turn-around years, making this a meaningful book for PCA club members to read. But it is not about driving Porsche racers, it is not about Porsche cars, it is not even much about Porsche the company specifically; it is about management and leadership, activities with which many PCA club members are involved during their ‘day jobs.’ Many examples of managerial insight are presented, one or more of which are bound to provide ‘Aha moments’ for readers in a wide variety of business endeavors. Most PCA members have a ‘day job’ to support their Porsche Habit. This book is all about how to make that day job more successful. Though intended to be a management guide, this book is written in a very readable first-person fashion. Schutz makes his points by means of illustrative, and very readable, stories. The stories themselves are so interesting that even non-management, non-Porsche people will enjoy reading this book. The story of how Cummings Diesel was created by a chauffeur in his spare time would make Horatio Alger proud. Peter Schutz is known for his success in turning around an ailing Porsche company, and in particular saving the 911 (the story about his drawing the trendline off the chart, across the wall and around the room is a classic). Though published some time ago, the philosophy of management presented in this book is timeless. Essentially as presented in the author’s introduction, “people need something exciting to rally around. They need an exciting focus before their work;

they need a leader...to nurture the driving force that separates ordinary, routine work from extraordinary effort and excellence.” The bulk of the book is comprised of stories about people who lead their organizations to outstanding achievements (and how they did it,) with many examples from Porsche AG. Though it has been years (decades actually) since my MBA program, I believe that THE DRIVING FORCE is both more informative and much more readable than anything I read then, the other Peter (Drucker) included! It is a very fascinating, even an engrossing’ read. It is all about personal stories, well told, to illustrate the management philosophy of the author, who has been successful professionally beyond the wildest dreams of most of the readers of this review. Though presented in terms of hardware products, the concepts are equally significant to ‘service’ businesses. Even the story about how Toyota’s approach to improving their production line differed

from that of Henry Ford, has implications for ‘service businesses.’ Between chapters there are commentaries (‘testimonials’ maybe,) that present additional insight (as well as kudos for Schutz) but in this reviewer’s opinion, they interrupt the flow of the presentation. Schutz draws some subtle but meaningful distinctions between sales and marketing; striving for success and pursuing excellence. He also has an enlightening treatment of the difference between authority and power, and the importance of applied motivational psychology (a talent for Motivational Psychology seems to be Peter Schutz in a nutshell). He also makes a case for dictatorial behavior in a democratic organization. THE DRIVING FORCE is hardbound, with 336 6x9 inch pages and a comprehensive index. As this is written it is available used, for $5.98 from Amazon.com. June 2019 | PANDO 7

Not your dad’s Cadillac. Weighing under 2,000 lbs. without fuel and driver and top speed of over 200 mph these DPI cars are crazy fast.

I know it’s a Ford but they are so cool and fast. Came in second behind Porsche 912.

The first Long Beach Grand Prix was in 1975 as a Formula 5000 race to certify the track/event for Formula One. The brain trust was Dan Gurney, Phil Hill and promoter Chris Pook (below).

The winner was Brian Redman driving a Lola for Jim Hall, the man in the cowboy hat.

// APRIL 12-14 marks the 45th Long Beach Grand Prix. Time flies, as I was at the first one. // APRIL 13th is Dan Gurney’s birthday, that is Saturday qualifying at the Long Beach Grand Prix. // For those who live in Southern California it was special to see Gurney at Cars & Coffee in Irvine or Moulin in Costa Mesa accompanied by his son. It would feel so commomplace, but then you realize “It is Dan Gurney.”

Treffen Santa B Story by Connie Somers Photos by Connie Somers, Keith Clark & Pram Oen

18 PANDO | June 2019

Barbara Treffen Santa Barbara was held during April 3-7, 2019. This Treffen was in our own backyard.

Barry was raised in Santa Barbara County, so it always seems like home when we visit. Treffen was held at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort, formerly The Fess Parker Doubletree. The hotel was recently remodeled and accommodations were top notch.

Story and Photos by Denise Michaels

904 Carrera GTS

One evening was a Charcuterie and Cheese / Wine Social in the Plaza del Sol area of the hotel. We were told, “Fess Parker will be on hand to tell us about the wines.” I’m old enough to remember Fess Parker acting in the popular Disney Davey Crockett series and later in the weekly Daniel Boone TV series; however, I recall he died several years ago. Did I get it wrong? I googled Fess Parker and discovered he passed away in 2010 in Santa Ynez. Apparently, they meant someone would talk about the Fess Parker wines. Actually, some people thought Fess was a no-show! A few of the young people pouring wines for us did not realize he had passed either. There were several tours offered: Getty Museum, Hearst Castle, CA Missions, Reagan Library, Solvang Tour, Wine Country Tour, Lotusland Garden, Wine Tasting, Sailing

20 PANDO | June 2019

Regatta, Dolphin Cruise, SB Trolley Tour, and SB Red Tile Walking Tour. There was something for everyone. After our evening meals, we were entertained with the sounds of phenomenal KEF speakers. On Saturday night there was a raffle for a set of KEF speakers. Someone else always wins! There is always next year, right? The next 2019 Treffen is September in Woodstock, VT at the Woodstock Inn & Resort; Treffen Colorado Springs will be held at The Broadmoor in April 2020; and Treffen White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia will be held at the Greenbrier Resort in September 2020. Treffens offer many great opportunities to meet Porsche enthusiasts, see beautiful cars spanning the entire scope of the Brand and enjoy fun and interesting local places of interests.

Concours Judging School Story by Norm Follis Photos by Marcia Salans – OCR Concours 2018

W

ith a Regional Concours taking place every month within Zone 8, the Concours season is about to enter the busiest time of the year. With judges being such a critical part of each concours, often there’s a real challenge to secure enough judges for each event. In order to encourage new judges and to bring experienced judges current on recent rule changes, a Judges School was held Saturday, April 20th at James Buck’s facility, Cape Auto Repair in Mission Viejo. The class was conducted by Richard Douglas, the Zone 8 Concours Chair. Richard did an outstanding job maintaining order with many lively conversations taking place regarding the interpretation of certain rules. We had a great turnout attended by nineteen judges, including eight new judges. Sixteen of the judges were from the OCR, plus one each from the Los Angeles, Grand Prix, and Santa Barbara regions. The message that we were left with is, each judge, new or old, needs to develop their own “method” of judging, within the rules of course. I encourage anyone interested in being a judge or just interested in learning more about how to prepare their car for a concours, should consider attending one of the upcoming Judging Schools. Educational, informative – time well spent.

AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS

Story by Judy and Pete Lech

Left: Derek Bell, co-winner of Le Mans in 1981 with Jacky Ickx.

d’Elegance Weekend 26 PANDO | June 2019

On March 7-10, 2019 under beautiful skies on Amelia Island, Florida, the Concours d’Elegance event returned for its twenty-fourth edition. After 2 weeks of threatening rain, the weather was perfect. This charity event, which gives millions of dollars to local charities, is held at the Ritz-Carlton on the beautiful fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island. It is regarded as one of the finest displays of rare and vintage automobiles in the world. This year’s Honoree was Belgian racing legend Jacky Ickx, 6-time winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans with 8 Formula One wins. So, let’s go back to the beginning. A truly awesome event without the immense crowds and exorbitant cost of Pebble Beach. We arrived in Jacksonville, FL on Tuesday, March 5th to a cool 39-degree evening. Glad we packed heavier clothes for our trip up the East Coast after the event! Now, isn’t Florida supposed to be the vacation warm spot for snow birds? On Friday, we met up with our OCR friends and neighbors Herb & Rose Wysard and their son Jeff and daughter-inlaw Kelly. Herb had invited us to the Bonhams auction at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club where he had their beautiful 1952 Alfa Romeo shipped for the auction. This was the first time we had been on the inside of one of these auctions. The Bonhams Auction was one of several automobile auctions going on that week, taking advantage of the clientele gathering on the Island. As we walked through the many cars of various vintages and kinds, each one more beautiful and exotic than the last, we were in awe. Friday saw warming temperatures, and was the day for the PorschePlatz display of approximately 500 Porsches. Judy met Manny Alban, Past President of PCA for a photo op. Now, we see a lot of Porsches in So. Cal and let me share that this display of every color and make and model was unbelievable. This event gave so many enthusiasts a chance to bring their

car to Northern Florida to take part in this historic event. As we walked amongst the cars, not only did the cars get our attention, but also the license plates. Clever folks out there. Saturday saw a gigantic Cars and Coffee on several fairways, where many car clubs put their exotic and more common marques on display and were enjoying the bright sunshine and visiting with friends. It was an amazing display. Sunday was the big event in and around the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton and the golf course. Temperatures were now in the low 80’s with a fair amount of humidity. We went in when the gates opened at 10:00 a.m., and enjoyed walking the field. Crowds continued to increase, but were manageable. Porsche and Mercedes had the largest displays on the field. We watched as driver honoree Jacky Ickx drove his Le Mans winning Porsche 962 from the central grandstand area to the center of the special Porsche 962 Class display area. There were 10 other 962’s as well – an awesome display! In addition to the awesome display of historically significant automobiles, other unique classes included Rock-Star Cars, Heads of State Cars, VW Custom Coachwork, and a display of innovative Indy Cars through the years; including a Novi, the first Lotus rear-engine car, and several Cummins diesels participants. There are always large collections of significant racing cars on display. If you have never been to Amelia Island, we highly recommend setting aside some time for the week’s events, culminating with the Concours on the second Sunday of March. There’s a lot of exploring to do in this historic area on northern Florida, including Saint Augustine and Jacksonville itself. Book early if you want to stay on the Island, or Jacksonville hotels and airport are only 30 minutes to the south. Enjoy – You’ll have a terrific, memorable time! June 2019 | PANDO 27

li was very well liked by his customers, many of whom are PCA-OCR members; because he always made time for them and prided himself on always satisfying the customer.

Eli was raised in Alhambra, California and actively served eight years in the Army. Eli was a very motivated person to make it big in this world and focused on growing Wheel Dynamics. He wanted his boys to eventually take over and continue growing the family business. Eli first started with Fast Forward Wheels, and a few years later, he was given the opportunity to start Wheel Dynamics. Eli catered only to the Porsche Industry as he was very familiar with the vehicles and the Brand’s intricacies. Eli loved helping his customers. He took his time to make them feel comfortable with their purchase. Eli gave back to the community by volunteering for Los Alamitos Air Force Base helping in the Sunburst Academy Program, which is currently partnering with Free Rein, a Pando advertiser. Community outreach was important to Eli and he gave back to children’s charities, since it was important to help them out in any way possible. Sadly, Eli passed away due to a motorcycle accident in February 2018 and leaves behind his loving wife Ruby and four children ranging from 20, 10, 7 and 2 years old.

Upcoming PCA-OCR Events:

Be in Boca for Parade 2019! Summer 2019

We’re lucky to be the Host Zone for Parade 2019 – and we’d love to see you there! It will be held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort. In early 2019, we’ll have complete details, and registration for the hotel and for Parade will be open then. So, plan now for your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.In case you’re not familiar, it’s a beautiful part of Florida: on the Atlantic, just north of Fort Lauderdale, with July’s comfortable sea breezes and summer temps in the high 80s. At 2018’s Parade, there were about 900 Porsches and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. For 2019, we’ll need 100s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country, and there will be an official Volunteer Registration process. But if you’re interested in helping on the front end, by providing local expertise and help with planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events, please let your Region Leadership know now or email zone 12rep@pca.org. Stay tuned for more information, but check out these sites now:

• Boca Raton Resort and Club • 2019 Porsche Parade Facebook Page • PCA National Website for Porsche Parade Are you a new PCA member? Well, welcome to the Club!! But you might be asking, “What’s all this about a ‘Parade’?” Porsche Parade is the “big” Porsche Club event of the year: our annual national convention. Parade has a wide variety of activities and club members from all across North America (and elsewhere!) come together for this once-a-year extravaganza to participate in a week of competitive events, to socialize and enjoy their cars, with seminars and tours adding to the event’s variety. For many club members, Parade is their big vacation for the year. It provides them with an opportunity to see new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA friends that they only see once a year, at Parade! Competitive Events:

• 5k Run/Walk • Autocross • Concours d’Elegance • RC Cars • Tech Quiz • Gimmick Rally • TSD Rally
