PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Barry Michaels
Are you what you drive? Just the other day I was reading an article suggesting that the make, model and color of your car tells the world who you are. I forget whether it was Plato or Aristotle that first suggested your choice of chariot reflects your unique personality, but I’m of the opinion there are a lot of exceptions to that theory. Our membership is diverse, and I expect our individual reasons for driving a Porsche are also diverse, regardless of the color choice. For some, it is the way you feel when you slip behind the wheel and carve your way through the canyons on an early morning drive. For others it may be respect for engineering and design
excellence, while for others it may serve as a symbol reflecting personal success. Some of us typically drive a SUV during the week and save the sports car for the weekend. Does that imply we have a split personality? I hope not. We are bound together by a love of the brand, regardless of the reasons, but the article did trigger curiosity about what cars our members drive. Here is what I found:
The majority of new Porsche vehicles have four doors, but at OCR only 171, or less than 8%, have four doors. Model years span from 1954 through 2019, and models range from the 914 through the 918 Spyder. The OCR numbers break out as follows:

H
ave you ever wondered the fate of a Porsche you sold many years ago?
How does a 1976 912E, once owned by the OCR Jim Marshall family, end up with a former Pebble Beach Concours judge living in Pennsylvania?
March 2019 | PANDO 13
F
lashback to 1990 :
A “For Sale” ad appeared in the Pando for a 912E owned by OCR member Gerd Reitz. Upon reading the ad, my thoughts returned to a day at the San Diego Porsche Parade in 1977. There, I saw a 912E for the first time on display in the auditorium. I’d always been keen on the 912 series, having once owned a 1967 model. Well, with the encouragement of Joy and our boys, we went to see the advertised 912E that same day. It was in great condition with some rare features! We bought it without hesitation. Over the months, a few ‘wear’ items were replaced and the usual polishing took place. We entered the 912E in several OCR concours events and driving tours. (See 1992 pic Joy Marshall and Chris Berglund, still OCR members today.) The car also saw duty as a daily driver. After five years of care and enjoyment, we sold the car to a law enforcement officer in Corona.
F
orward to 2018 :
My wife and I were at Original Mike’s enjoying the monthly OCR Breakfast Club one Saturday. Our own Marcia Salans, Pando Editor, approached me and said, “Jim, a guy in Pennsylvania has been trying to locate you to talk about a Porsche you once owned.” Intrigued, I gave him a call. Well, meet the current owner, Paul Bates, of PCA Allegheny Region, PA. Paul has a love for German cars, microcars and Porsches in particular. He has previously owned a ’61 356B, and an ’85 911 Carrera. He has also owned and restored several BMW Isettas and a Messerschmitt over the years. Paul even had the honor of entering his 1953 ISO Isetta at the Prestigious Pebble Beach Concours (see pic with Jay Leno.) He once served as a judge for the Pebble event and also volunteered on their Media Relations Committee for ten years. Paul was specifically looking to purchase a 912E due to its relative simplicity, superb balance, and the uniqueness of this rare, one-year only model. He said my name and OCR region appeared in some 28 year old paperwork that came along with a 912E he had purchased. He was hoping I could fill in some gaps on the history of the car when we owned it, as well as identifying previous owners. We exchanged pictures of the car then, and now. I told Paul all I knew of other owners and sent him my old maintenance records along with a copy of the Concours poster we used when displaying the car. We Porsche folks keep all this old stuff, right? Paul then surprised me by sending a print on canvas of the car as it is today (see pic).
H
Paul has now compiled the car’s history and all owners’ names. Turns out, we were the fourth of thirteen owners since 1976!
ighlights:
In 1976, the car was purchased new in Colorado and the owner soon moved to Anaheim. A chain of owners followed who lived in Orange County, Corona, Long Beach, and Oceanside. Then, the car moved to Minnesota, Michigan, and now, Pennsylvania. While we had the car in the early 1990s, I swapped the 14” original Fuchs wheels for 7 x 15” and lowered the car a bit. The sixth owner, in Long Beach, rebuilt the engine in 1999 at 112,00 miles. At some point, a passenger outside mirror was added. In 2006, in Costa Mesa, the eighth owner re-painted the car staying with the original light yellow. At this time, it is likely the 7 x 15” wheels were changed back to the original 5 1/2 14” wheels. In 2007, the ninth owner, in Fullerton, wanted to sell the car to raise funds to adopt a special needs child. The eleventh owner, in Minnesota, added a high mounted third brake light. Currently, the car has 147,000 original miles on the clock and remains in excellent original condition to this day. Paul and his wife have taken three long trips in the car, each a 1,000 miles or more, including one with the 912 Registry Group. Viva Porsche!

Cone Zone Update Photo by Gary Labb
by Rob Greene The OCR Porsche Alley CONE ZONE emerged from hiatus with a patriotic fanfare at the Club’s July 7th Breakfast Meeting by featuring RED WHITE & BLUE Porsches. Although this restart marks the fourth annual series of monthly cone zone adventures, those of you Porsche fanatics who have joined PCA’s Orange Coast Region in the past few months may be wondering, “Where is Porsche Alley and what is an OCR Cone Zone?” A little over three years ago, with a slightly twisted PCA slogan, “It’s the cars with the people,” we began a new feature at our monthly breakfast meetings: One row of parking stalls (hence, the “Alley”) at Original Mike’s was coned off with slightly-used orange traffic cones donated by PCA-OCR’s Autocross (thanks!). Parking in this zone of cones is reserved for a designated class of Porsche or driver that varies from month-to-month. Our first series highlighted different models
of Porsche, our second series focused on color to determine which VIP (very important Porsche) would get Cone Zone parking preference. The most recent series included color exercises, a model type, and different types of equipment on fabulous Porsches. In addition to the traditional RED WHITE and BLUE colors for last July, we featured fixed rear wings, various wheel sizes, all cabriolets, and even no-cones parking by color sorting (think Skittles, M&Ms, or gum drops in color groups!) Yes, we are a funloving bunch. The plan for the March Cone Zone theme follows, and special thanks to members who provided some great ideas!
• MARCH – Water-cooled engines. Park head-in and let’s see what you have! I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions and additions.

“ W
Warming up” to
Story by Glenn Billings Photos by Glenn Billings and Larry Moore
ith rain the day before and after, The Rallye Gods, combined with Mother Nature, turned the PCA-OCR warm up Rallye from a wet, chilly, gray morning into a dry and cool bright Sunday morning. The ground might have been wet, but the spirits were high as 21 Porsches and 41 competitors gathered for the driver’s meeting at 8:30 a.m., by Original Mike’s in Santa Ana. Larry Moore, our Rallye Meister, wanting to ease any newcomers into gimmick rallying, reduced the number of questions he normally brings to his tougher rallies; however, the time and distance, remained around 50 miles totaling a little over two hours. A nice cross-section of Porsches were entered, including a sixteen-year-old Boxster, a 1997 Carrera, a beautiful white GT-3 RS, a pretty yellow Cayman and several 991 Carreras and a couple of Cabriolets. At 9:00 a.m. in 30 second intervals, and odometers reset to zero, we exited the parking lot, turned right heading northwest, and started meandering our way toward the Seal Beach / Long Beach areas. Since rallying requires a driver and navigator, it was incredible that Mark Johnson was a solo driver in his 911. More on that later! Your outcome was dependent on getting the most answers right, and with just 10 questions, you had to allow for the possibility of a log jam at the top of the score sheet. Questions included, but weren’t limited to, how many times did you cross certain streets, go under bridges, how far did you drive along a roadway, and further complications included the 4 photographs you had to identify along the route. One particular photo kept the winning teams from a perfect score Results : 1st

of 10. It seems all the pictures would come up on the righthand side unless depicted by the symbol SOL (Scene on Left.) The fire station was recognized by almost everyone but was on the driver’s side with no SOL designation on the route sheet. You were, by all accounts, “SOL.” By now, the first-timers and novices were understanding “rallye speak.” L is for left turn, R is for right turn, OPP is for opportunity, T means the street ends and SOR is for sign on right. Everyone was pleased with the easy route instructions. On tougher rallies, you could have a direction that says “R at 3rd Opp.” That’s it. Nevertheless, Larry kept us all on course by naming the street you should be on. In the past, if you got lost, you headed to the finish, usually at some fine chain restaurant and drowned your troubles in frustration or drove home, annoyed at it all. We all completed it in good order. Over one-third of the field received medals. There were 4 first place gold medalists, 3 second place silver medalists, and one third place, taking the bronze. Incredibly, tying for second place with 8 correct answers was Mark Johnson, who rallied alone in his 911. What could he do if he had a navigator? Despite the varied collection of Porsche models on the Rallye, the winning teams all drove Porsche Carreras. Ultimately, Mother Nature came through with a break in the weather. Our Rallye Meister, Larry Moore, came through by giving the rookies a break, and all the PCA-OCR members who competed finished and met at our ending destination,“Cocos,” in Costa Mesa. There were no “lost souls.” The Rallye Gods were pleased. We are all now “warming up” to the anticipation of another upcoming 2019 Gimmick Rallye!

Be in Boca for Parade 2019! Summer 2019
We’re lucky to be the Host Zone for Parade 2019 – and we’d love to see you there! It will be held at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort. In early 2019, we’ll have complete details, and registration for the hotel and for Parade will be open then. So, plan now for your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.In case you’re not familiar, it’s a beautiful part of Florida: on the Atlantic, just north of Fort Lauderdale, with July’s comfortable sea breezes and summer temps in the high 80s. At 2018’s Parade, there were about 900 Porsches and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. For 2019, we’ll need 100s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country, and there will be an official Volunteer Registration process. But if you’re interested in helping on the front end, by providing local expertise and help with planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events, please let your Region Leadership know now or email zone 12rep@pca.org. Stay tuned for more information, but check out these sites now:

California Festival of Speed (CFOS) Annual Request for Volunteers!
It is that time of year again when I ask for your help to solicit volunteers to help with the California Festival of Speed (CFOS)! This year the festival is Friday March 29th thru Sunday March 31st, with set-up on Thursday March 28th. It is important to begin getting out the word that we need volunteers to make the 2019 CFoS a success! We have shifts in the morning and afternoon Friday through Sunday. Volunteers can sign up for more hours or multiple days if they wish. Last year we had several volunteers who opted for this. David Witteried and I frequently forget that many members have no idea what CFoS is. Be sure to explain it clearly when you talk about it. There are some excellent videos on the CFoS website at http://www.zone8.org/events/speedfestival.php. Volunteers receive free parking, volunteer T-shirts and lunch money if they work at least one shift as a thank you. Your Region will also receive a share of the Festival profits based upon the number of volunteers from your Region! I already contacted all the members to solicit their support again this year. Our goal is to have at least 400 volunteers. Zone 8 has over 14,500 primary and associate members and it would be great if we could meet our goal. Anyone who wishes to volunteer can contact me at volunteer@ calfestival.org. I have already received several replies from members offering to volunteer again this year. Please put out the call for volunteers at all your events. Volunteers don’t have to be a PCA member. Volunteers must be 18 years of age. I will need the member’s name, cell phone number, email address and Region affiliation when they email me. Let me know if you have any questions or need additional information. Sincerely Yours, Janice Witteried CFOS Volunteer Coordinator volunteer@calfestival.org Zone 8 of the Porsche Club of America links the 14 southwestern regions in California, Arizona and Nevada. Zone 8 encourages member participation by promoting competitive, social and charitable events. Where can your Porsche take you?

RICE’S
Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice
Ruf maintains his philosophy to use what is at hand and reinvents only when all else fails
2017 CTR-4 showcased at Geneva Motor Show 2017. Ruf has always jumped ahead of all the hot rod and modification shops by huge margins, and now Ruf Automobile now makes an even larger jump with his 911 evolution CTR-4. Ruf has changed many things in his CTR-4 starting with concept, engineering design, and the craftsmanship in construction ability. All put together for the betterment of building a better car for reliable high-performance driving.
I wasn’t there at last fall’s Monterey Porsche celebrations, Rats! I had obligations here in So Cal. However, I did get to see the new Ruf CTR-4 before anyone up there did. I did want to mention Alois & Estonia Ruf, bringing their newest creation to the ‘big show,’ as it is a remarkable milestone in the continuing and evolving “Evergreen 911” story going on 54 years now. The new CTR4 looked, at first, to be a copy of their 1987 Ruf CTR, especially the well-publicized 34 PANDO | March 2019
“Yellowbird,” it isn’t. The new “CTR-4,” is an all new car! (“CTR” is, by the way, “C” came from racing’s Group C and Porsche’s then new Digital Engine Management System in the 956-racing car. The “T” is for TwinTurbochargers, “R” is for Ruf, and now the “4” is the 4th version of the CTR.) There was, and still is, only one ever built Ruf Yellowbird. That is the 1985, ’86 & ’87 development CTR prototype that ran 211+ mph at Ehra Lessien in 1987 and is Alois &
Estonia’s Ruf’s favorite Ruf car over any and all of them. I’ve heard that from them many, many times! Yellowbird has been written enough to not need further explanation, but as we keep seeing ‘new’ 911s or custom 911 versions popping up in ‘Porsche magazines’ and - every great once in a while - one is actually seen or reported to have been seen; somewhere, it warrants some recognition. There is only one manufacturer of a ‘911
type’ that has Porsche approval, and that is RUF Automobile GMBH. The “retro look” has a number of modifying shops doing them just as the ‘Singer 911,’ which is reported as a copy-cat look of the early 911 built over an old 964 chassis, with many heavily artistic custom features that can only be said is in no way a lowprofile looking car. Then there are some worked over “Rauh Welt” 911 and 930s which customizes 911/930 body work with enormous wheels and flare, custom paint, and interesting custom features. Then there is the Kremer Bros. of Cologne Germany, who won Le Mans outright. Kremer Bros. took 1st place overall with their Kremer K-3 (935) out distancing and out speeding all other rivals with better aerodynamics, lower center of gravity, and air-to-air intercooling. The K-3 is special with its first-to-use “Design Plastic’s” Kevlar body work (as on the CTR) and then there was the “Kremer Street 935,” a road version of a 935 race car and one of the best racing-to-road Porsches ever built. Tech Art has done some very good engineering in their custom designs and making the Porsche design, sometimes, look even better.
Ruf Automobile is another story entirely as Alois has never been too interested in racing to prove his road car designs, and almost everyone else does. Ruf maintains his philosophy to use what is at hand and reinvents only when all else fails. To be clear, high performance road cars is Ruf’s only business. Racing is always of mixed priorities and that does not fit in Ruf priorities. Ruf has always jumped ahead of all the hot rod and modification shops by huge margins, and now Ruf Automobile now makes an even larger jump with his 911 evolution CTR-4. The CTR-4 does not start with a white Porsche body shell. The CTR-4 is made from scratch with carbon fiber, high strength steel, and other secret metals yet unnamed. The CTR-4 is longer and wider. The A, B and C pillars integrate the Ruf IRC (Integrated Roll Cage) into the carbon center ‘tub’ and front and rear substructures. Coil springs and struts are horizontally mounted above the wheel centerline with the fronts placed fore to aft, and the rears sideways (left to right). This provides room
Fig.2. 1987 CTR and 2017 CTR-4
for parallel front and rear ‘A’ frame upper and lower suspension arms, and now have room in the trunk.
Briefly: CTR-4 weight: 2,614 lbs, 700 HP from 3.6 liter, 4-valve, water motor which does: 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds. Top V-Max: 225mph. In my mind, this year in Monterey was, ‘Motor Madness week.’ What made my day was seeing another chapter in the evergreen 911 come alive again. Seeing them both together is quite striking as they look almost the same; however, they are also both completely different. Porsche is now offering so many new models in just the “911” range, it’s difficult to know which one is which? But the quality and well-known reliability is well worth the costs and the driving rewards are endless. No car anywhere can beat that. The new 2017 CTR only reflects upon the original concept of the 901-911’s rear engine weight mass placed on rear wheels and aerodynamic body shape of all 911 Porsches, and the new CTR as well. So many cars makers simply bend up their sheet

metal every few years or so and call it “new” or “boldly exciting” with bandwagon claims of, “This is the new look for….,” whatever decade it happens to be. I look at some of these cars and wonder how could anyone ever like one of those things? Then back to the 901-911 and 2018. I think to myself, we have had the same basic look as we had back in 1965. Isn’t it about time to change it? Well, in an instant I hear myself yell: NO! It’s darn near perfect! Why change it? You don’t change something that has evolved better and better over 5 decades for the sake of change-or worse yet, “style.” Oh, one last thing. The concept and evolution 911 still have a customer base that LOVES the 911! You only change things on a Porsche 911 like you do on aircraft, you change things for improved efficiency and/or safety. Ruf has changed many things in his CTR-4 starting with concept, engineering design, and the craftsmanship in construction ability. All put together for the betterment of building a better car for reliable high-performance driving.
Fig 4. New chassis - 2017 CTR
Two points to think about in 2019. Point #1: When the Ruf CTR first came out in public in 1987, the competition was nowhere near the level of the Ruf CTR, its performance was mind bending! That includes the then near radical performer, the Porsche 959 with its new hyper-tech computer controlled 4-wheel drive. The Yellowbird CTR blew it and all the rest in the weeds! The CTR of 1987 out performed every other car out there, Ferrari’s Testarossa, Lamborghini Countach, AMG’s Hammer, Mustang Turbo, Corvette Grand Sport, Aston Martin, etc., etc., and other ‘also rans.’ Point #2: Today the competition is packed with high performance road cars that are so equal in so many numbers, that they nearly ALL are capable of outperforming any non-specially trained driver. It takes a professional ‘shoe’ to extract anywhere

near the limits of today’s high-performance road cars that are easily available today. Lastly, in the next year or so, the competition from Porsche; especially with the Porsche GT-2 RSWeissach edition which is an OUTSTANDING

performer! The CTR-4 will perform fantastically, but just how well? But then too, so will Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren. There may be a surprise in the new mid-engine Corvette, IF IT HAPPENS? We heard of it back in 1968 (I quit holding my breath in 1970-LfR). So, there should be an interesting year or two of road tests to come. I predict a road test of them all would fill an encyclopedia.
Then having difficulty getting the Porsche 964 or 993 fan tool into the fan shaft, and trying to wiggle the tool in and between the 3 fan belts, and then having enough room to loosen the 24 mm holding nut, without scraping paint off the rear engine compartment body werk? The 964-993 tool bag has a special tool, “Holder,” and it fits into the fan/alternator shaft. It has a bent (90° handle), fitting that is difficult enough to fit into the fan shaft.
1. I cut some flat steel (1/4” thick X 1” wide & 14” inches or longer). This is easy to cut and mild steel is easy to bend.
2. I then cut an 11mm to 12 mm hole where the 12-point bit is to be mounted (see Fig.9.) in order to mount the bit as deep as I could (see Fig. 7.), and have more room to use the tool.
3. I then M.I.G. welded the bit onto the steel handle. Fig.5. 993 RS tool bag wrench
Fig.8. Homemade fan holder tool
On one handle I left the handle flat and on another as pictured (Fig.6.), I made two bends for even more room to get around the body and belts.
Fig.9. Another home-made holder vs tool bag’s two-piece.
Fig.6. Another view - 993 RS tool bag wrench
Fig.7. 2-piece tool bag KLIEN wrench.
The round handle fits loosely over the holder and is not long enough to get a firm grip on it to hold against a long 24 mm wrench to loosen the fan nut! Trying to get around the 3 belts, actually 6 belts, one going out and one coming back. You have to work around all the belts, body work, and have enough room to loosen or tighten the nut which is challenging. The tools supplied are simply not well fitted or long enough to get good leverage.
Once upon a time, while on a little ‘boost blast,’ I sifted at high rpm (within limits) and got a bright red warning light. I slowed, stopped, and investigated. Hmmm, pretzel looking shredded 993tt fan belt? Using the tool bag’s “holder” and “handle” (Fig.3. and 4) and the 24 mm wrench from the 993’s tool bag, I finally got the #@! **! fan nut off and replaced the belt. (These images are of a much simpler RS 3.6 twobelt system.) I decided I had enough with the factory tool bag tools as they simply are a pain to use! So, it came to pass a need for a simpler solution. I ordered from McMaster.com, a few drive bits and some ¼” x 1” x 16” flat steel.
Fig.10. McMaster-Carr # 5074A15 $5.53
The drive bits also known as “XZN” bits, or “hex shank bits.”
Fig.11. Handle: 1” wide by x 12” long x ¼” thick, flat Steel. This makes fan/alternator nut so easy to remove or install: Why not ask your shop mechanic to fabricate one for your 964 - 993’s tool bag?
It works so easy, so logical, and SIMPLE. I have to wonder if anybody at Porsche these days ever used their own tools to replace their own fan belts. Ya got ‘to wonder?
