President’s Message by Pres. Gordon Williams
Greetings all! As most of you know I try to use this column to thank some of the folks that spend their time and energy to help this club continue it’s journey towards excellence. Last month I pointed out those responsible for taking on this year’s Concours, and in so doing I forgot to thank someone that without their unselfish commitment to this activity it certainly would not be back at one of our favorite locations, Dana Point Harbor. Joe Nedza, thank you for all of the time and effort you put in to help us secure this location
once again. I know from following all of your correspondence that it was not easily done. I am convinced that your commitment and strategic approach is what finally turned the municipality in our favor. Thank you Joe! April was a great month for activities. The Festival Of Speed was great! As the temperature increases, so do our activities. Remember that all of our activities for 2013 are back on the Pando Calendar and online, so check for all of the year ‘s activities and make sure you calendars in your favorite club activities. Look for a first time, 3-day S. Utah tour, lead by your VP Greg Lush, sometime in the fall. I can’t wait for that one! In May, one of the most important and well-attended events that we have is our New Member Picnic. Bring the whole family! All 2012 and 2013 new members are free, 5 bucks for all other members. C. L. and his volunteers do a great job and it has become one of our most highly anticipated events. As usual,
it will be held at Laguna Niguel Regional Park. This month, in addition to our usual weekly activities, we are having a Petersen Museum Tour on Mother’s Day. Two years ago we sold out and had to lead two groups to this tour; over 120 folks were in attendance. Make sure you register early. I’m including an Easter photo of half of my family; my daughter and sonin-law were behind the camera eliciting a smile from my grandson Sutton. I hope everyone had a great Easter and will have a great Mother’s Day! As always, thank you to all of our members and associates for their participation in our events. Remember, our club runs on volunteers, no matter how little or how much they choose to be involved. Please take the time to say “thank you” to one of our volunteers this month. In the early morning a flat six comes to life, its seesaw symphony a part of our way of life. Neither Caruso nor Pavarotti ne’er sang a note so true. Every gearheads heart will reckon to give that note its due!

Wax on, Wax off I am very flattered to have heard from our 2013 Concours Chair, Mr. Norm Follis, asking if I could emcee the White Gloves Concours this year. After 38 seconds of consideration I replied, “yes, of course” My White Gloves roots are getting into 10 years or so now and amongst a host of pleasant memories is Mr. Follis himself. Typical of so many of our club members, Norm is the kind of guy that enhances the experience of owning a Porsche and being part of a group that appreciates that small fact. Norm has been a Concours Chair in the past, most recently 2011, and will ably carry on the role that Louise Bent carried last year. A behind the scenes note is that Louise and past President (and new mom) Nicole Cooper-Boggs were challenged in 2012 in finding a venue. There was a lot of “sweat equity” expended and ultimately we ended up at Shady Canyon Country Club. These ladies and the other
volunteers should get a lot of credit in ensuring there was even any kind of Concours in 2012… there were doubts. In 2013 we return to “Lantern Bay” in Dana Point. This is one of nature’s beauty spots on the California Coastline, certainly. It is our own Orange Coast Region’s “Pebble Beach” with Cars, Coastline and surf together in one special spot. Everywhere you look is a “photo op”, whether it’s the cars or the people, there is something enticing and interesting to see. A few years back there was a wedding going on behind our Concours at the hotel. I am sure that this couple is still talking about the 120 or so Porsches on the lawn behind them. The date this year is Sunday, September 15th. So please put this on your calendar and make sure to bring the family along. It is one of our most “family friendly” events. DO YOU OBSESS ABOUT YOUR DAILY DRIVER? ( I DO! ) Story by Paul Kramer This is one of those terms that many of us auto enthusiasts take for granted. However, have you ever mentioned this to your average person who only sees cars as a means to travel from point A to point B (i.e. Prius owners)? The usual response you get is anything from a blank stare to a perplexed expression like a dog waiting for you to throw a ball. It is such a common vernacular among us car people that we forget that 99% of the world has no idea what we are talking about. A “daily-driver” (as defined by us car folk) is simply a car that we use for all our mundane day-to-day activities. This car has to do everything from taking us to work, picking up the kids from schools/activities, shopping at Costco and driving the family to Grandma’s for Thanksgiving. Basically, it has to do everything you wouldn’t dare use your “Sunday-drive-to-the-car-show” car for. Like women who need shoes for all occasions, we really need several daily drivers to fit our diverse lifestyles. I have taken it even a step further. I tend to dwell on the idea of the “perfect” daily-driver. I have even created lists of my favorites as well as ranked them in different sub-sects of daily driving. I think of it as more of my own automotive kingdom classification. There is the commuting-to-work phylum, which is then broken down into two different families: over-25-miles-to-work class or under-10-milesto-work class. From here, you can further segment the list into the “what-part-of-the-country-you-live-in” genus. For example, let’s say your profile was: • Live less than 5-miles to work; • Vehicle will be shaded all day (carport or subterranean parking); • Dress attire is business casual with open-toed Tuesdays and Thursdays; • Location is by the beach in Southern California; and • Work for or own a company that specializes in design and manufacturing of surf wear. Ok, so what would be a good choice for this profile? You need to drive something that says you are cool and hip with style. It also needs to show that you are a trendsetter but not pretentious. This daily-driver has to be friendly and approachable regardless of age or gender. Here are some great suggestions: 1. 1947 Ford “Jailbar” ½ Ton Truck with heavy patina, modern drivetrain, and working A/C… no glass-pack exhausts, please. 2. 1971 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Wagon in Viking Blue with the 455 cubic inch engine and rear facing third row seat.
3. 1968 BMW 1600 2-Door Sedan in an unusual period-correct color. Bone stock with steel wheels and hubcaps are a must.
4. 1969 Porsche 912 in light ivory or any other unforgettable color. Some mild patina on the paint and chrome is strongly encouraged.

My Owners love Porsches and me! They have been driving them for over 30 years and have each owned over 30 Porsches throughout the years. Lisa has been driving a 911, mostly red, since 1982. Starting with a 1974 Targa, she has had about every model: from 911s, Carreras, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991s, a Panamera and 5 Cayennes. I fit the best in the back of a Cayenne. They put 4 of us dogs in the back of a Panamera all weighing about 100 pounds each. Talk about a lot of dog hair in the car! The 911s are tough getting in the back, especially with those darn roll bars!

There is nothing more pleasing than going outside at the end of winter and enjoying beautiful eighty-degree weather. The March 3, 2013 autocross event had a big turn out, thank you to all who attended. Our events would not be possible without our series sponsor Walter’s Porsche, our series support sponsor GMG – Global Motorsport Group and our event sponsors. The March event sponsor was Cape Auto. Our course designers Attila Szilagy and David Palmquist did it again! They designed a course that allowed all levels of autocross goers to test the limits of their car and handling techniques. No matter how many events you have attended, there is something to be learned from each autocross. My intention for the March 3 event was to
push my limits around the corners a bit more. I was nervous about doing it but I did and at the end of the day I felt I had accomplished this. New drivers, experienced drivers and all the folks in between are sure to have a good time at any event. We encourage families to make this a group event; bring the kids, bring the dog (and extra sunscreen)! In keeping with the tradition of personal growth, I have decided to attend the April 29th driving event (DE) at the Auto Club Speedway. I am anxious to attend, as this will be my first driving event. 2013 AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS A CELEBRATION OF PORSCHE 911 WITH ORANGE COAST REGION PARTICIPANTS WINNING AN AMELIA AWARD Story by Bob Weber
The panel included: Peter Schutz - President of Porsche Cars, AG—the savior of the 911, Retired; Alwin Springer – former head of Porsche Motorsport NA and Andial Racing; Harm Lagaaij – Porsche AG Director of Design, Retired; Hurley Haywood – on of the most successful drivers of the Porsche 911, now celebrating the 40th Anniversary of his victory with Peter Gregg at the 1973 Daytona 24 Hours of Endurance driving a Porsche 911 RSR; Jack Atkinson - former Crew Chief for Peter Gregg’s Brumos Racing teams from 1969 to 1980 winning 2 TransAm Championships and 2 IMSA Championships in 911 based RSRs, 934.5s and 935s; Vic Elford - winner of the Monte Carlo Rally in a 911; and Jeff Zwart - Pike’s Peak Champion winning in a 911 based racer.
Often referred to as the “East Coast version of the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance”, the prestigious 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance 2013 was held Sunday, March 10th on the 10th and 18th fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island, Florida. The event attracted an estimated crowd of 25,000 with more than 300 judged vehicles on display, by personal invitation only from the Concours founder, Mr. Bill Warner. But this event really spans 4 days, from March 7 to March 10th, celebrating all things about automobiles. The Honorary Chairman this year was famous race driver Sam Posey. In addition to the race cars of Sam Posey, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance celebrated the 50th anniversaries of the Ford GT40, Porsche 911 and the many Porsche race car derivatives, Corvette Sting Ray and Lamborghini, the race cars of Harry Miller and the motorcycles of Ducati. The Ford GT40 class was marked by
the wonderful gathering of fourteen on of the most successful drivers of the race cars at the far end of the show field, Porsche 911, now celebrating the 40th highlighted by chassis number 1075 that Anniversary of his victory with Peter won overall at Le Mans in 1968 and Gregg at the 1973 Daytona 24 Hours 1969. of Endurance driving a Porsche 911 A Porsche 911 seminar, “Porsche’s RSR; Jack Atkinson - former Crew Flagship at 50” presented by Porsche Chief for Peter Gregg’s Brumos Racing Cars North America, was held on Friday, teams from 1969 to 1980 winning 2 March 8th. After swapping a very tired, and in need of major rebuilding, 3.0 911 SC engine for a 1984 911 3.3 Carrera engine, the 911 and its owner were very happy and satisfied. The smog check was nothing unusual, as the Carrera 3.2 engine runs cleaner in every phase of operation compared to the 911 SC with its CIS Air Pump and the other various sensitive adjustments needed. The Carrera 3.2 needs nothing other than normal service items: 12,000 mile service: oil + filter; valve adjustment, 30,000 mile service same as 12, 000 mile+ Ign. Cap; rotor and new plugs; and at 60,000 miles, O2 sensor check and new high tension ignition wires/connectors . The Motronic e.c.u. controls everything and no adjustments are necessary, as there are no service adjustments anyway! However the regular smog inspection failed. The owner was willing to take it to a referee and that should have been no problem; as the newer engine runs so much cleaner that the older one. The owner ended up with a failed SMOG inspection that (Continued on Page 30)

Book Review:
LE MANS The Porsche & Peugeot Years 1992-1999 By R. M. Clark, Published by Brooklands Books, Surrey, UK Review by Bruce Herrington This book is part of the seven book Le Mans series by Brooklands Books, covering the years from 1923-1999. True, Porsches raced at Le Mans as early as 1951 (where 1 of 3 finished, placing 20th overall and first in the 1100cc Class). Since ‘51, Factory participation has been sporadic but there have always been privately entered Porches at Le Mans. During part of the period covered by this book Porsche competed seriously, with ‘factory’ entries achieving overall victory. With the Porsche factory returning to Le Mans this June, (with two 991 GT3RSRs) which is their first entry since they won overall in 1998; it is interesting to review some of their past involvement. This book is rather unique in that it was not written as much as compiled. The entire book consists of reprints from contemporary magazines, (including Autocar, Autosport and Motor Sport) who provided extensive coverage, while American magazines seemed to have lost interest in Le Mans after the GT40 years, covered in the ‘66-74 volume of the Le Mans Years series. Despite the title, the magazine articles reprinted in this book are written to give the general reader an overall view of the special rules, car/team preparation and excitement of each year’s race and are not focused specifically on Porsches. For that matter, the Peugeots only competed in two of the eight years covered, and the Porsche Years were really only 96, 97, and 98. But if you would like to experience the Le Mans race scene vicariously, this book will take you there. Porsche’s incredible domination of all three classes in the 1996 race is, of course, well covered in all the articles for that year.
The use of reprints not only ensures that the articles are very well written, but their contemporary nature provides a unique perspective — each year starts out with articles written in advance of that year’s race, speculating and predicting about the drivers, the cars, and the various match-ups. This ‘stage setting’ introduction to each year-chapter is something no other book on Le Mans provides. And of course there are special details of interest to the then contemporary readers — ticket prices, times for the various practices and the trial day, and frequencies for the radio stations providing coverage. Race reports from the trial day as well as practice, forecast sometimes correctly, often not, the race reports themselves, where the different magazines seem to focus on different aspects of the same goings on. Fascinating. Overall, there is a very stimulating feeling of ‘currency’ unlike any book written as after-the-fact history. It’s like the difference between a first-person report and an outsider’s analysis. If you like reading race reports, you will love this book. The race reports are all very readable and give ‘blow by blow and minute by minute’ coverage. The juxtaposition of reports on the same race, written by the prime writers of different motorsports magazines, makes for some very interesting comparisons of their differing perspectives. Unfortunately, the reports are not necessarily presented in strict chronological order and the individual re-prints are not dated. Date

and publication information is available in the table of contents so that any apparent discrepancies in continuity can be resolved when they present themselves. This 8 x 10-3/4 inch paperback book is somewhat smaller than the original magazines. The type size on the reduced pages will make most ‘mature’ readers reach for their glasses. The 172 pages present many race pictures, all in black and white, and often with an ‘artsy’ look. needed to try a less dangerous sport. Is racing at Auto Club Speedway in the Festival of Speed at 160 mph less dangerous? They both fell in love with Racing Porsches. Lucky for me because I get to go in Tom’s big doghouse on wheels to all the Porsche events. (Think it’s called a Motor home?) We take it to all the Auto Crosses at El Toro, D. E.s and Track Days. Lisa & Tom have now raced most of the major tracks in California. They have driven Willow Springs, Button Willow, Auto Club Speedway, Pomona, Laguna Seca and their favorites, which are Spring Mountain and Chuck Walla. They even got to race their California Ferrari at Chuck Walla. They don’t allow dogs at the big tracks so I don’t like it when they go there. My favorite time of the week is Saturday mornings. I wake up my Dad at 5:00 A.M. to make sure we get a good parking spot at Cars & Coffee. Every week we usually go in a different car. I only let him buy a car I can fit in. Dad lets me sit in the front seat of our GT3 RS, which has one of those roll bars that I hate. Lisa bought the black & orange RS from Patrick Dempsey, bet his dog never got to ride in that car like I do! Lisa and Tom are now both Nationally Certified Porsche Driving instructors. I want Dad to teach me to how to drive the new 2013 PDK 991. That should be easier than the other cars with a clutch.

From then on she wished Mueller, Christine Newcomer, Candice someday she could own a red Porsche & Eric Kaltenbach, Carl Van Derschuit, and of course a dog like me! Or if you ever wondered where the famous red and blue “swishes” on the side of all Grand Prix White Brumos Porsche racers came from, Jack Atkinson revealed the secret of a Los Angeles based hot rodder and painter, Dave Kent, being flown into Jacksonville to paint Peter Gregg’s 917 and other cars. Jack was also the crew chief on the Peter Gregg 1977 Brumos Porsche 934.5, the 1977 TransAm championship winner that Bob Weber now owns and shows at Concours. They left me on April 5-7 to go to that big Festival of Speed in Fontana. Dad had the 4th best time out of his entire run group. I’m so proud of him. Lisa got to drive the 993 Carrera RS from Sweden around the whole NASCAR oval track at Auto Club Speedway in the 50 years of Porsches parade. That was a first that has never been done in the history of Porsche! Lisa met 50 of the nicest people owning Porsches from 1964 – 2013. Thanks to Skip Carter, Suesan Way and Marty Goldsmith she also got to be the Lead Car for an hour every day leading up to 200 Porsches around the track for 3 days at Festival of Speed. She had just picked up her new 991 Carrera S from Walter’s Porsche, from Ed McRae & Tim Churchill, 39 days before the race! I just found out they are leaving me again to go on the Autobahn Adventures Trip with their friends, Tina & Mark Trewartha, who run the trip. They had so much fun last time on their trip with them. How can they have fun in the Bernese Mountains without their Bernese Mountain dog? I heard they had ordered another 991, from Eric Ernst at Circle Porsche, months ago for a Euro Delivery and they will test drive it at Nurburing, their favorite race track! Well, Dad, I have some good news for you… I am having puppies the first week in May! Hope this helps pay for your Racing fund for Ridings Racing and Flying L Racing!

5. 1966 MGB-GT in primrose yellow with chrome wire wheels and very minor visible rust. Some mandatory additions to any of these choices is to add a Bluetooth radio with hands-free for your phone and a working a/c beyond one of those devices that you bought from Skymall that plugs into your cigarette adapter. These two suggestions will give you all you need to have a competent yet cool 21st century daily-driver. Ok, so you aren’t this hip fashion designer who walks around barefoot all day and sips wheat grass. Let’s say you are more of the corporate type that has to commute over 30-minutes in heavy traffic everyday. You can’t deal with any hiccups from your car. It needs to work properly every time you turn the key and can be driven at speed with no warming up necessary. However, it must be fun and a wake-up call to your “car-guy” chromosome. You don’t want to tie up too much cash in these cars because you need every dime for your “hobby” cars. So, it is all about bang for your buck. The following cars will do the trick: 1. 2003 Jaguar S-Type R with over 400hp/400 lb. ft. of torque and less than $10k. This sleeper will embarrass the hell out of any pimply teenage Honda-esque drifter while cuddling you in heated Connolly leather and Birdseye maple wood trim. 2. 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLS500 with AMG package. It’s a coupe… no, it’s a sedan… Hell, I really don’t care how they classify it, it looks cool, it’s practical and it costs less than a new Scion XB-“toaster” thing.
3. 1995 Volvo 850 T-5R Estate in cream yellow with dark anodized wheels. These Über-hip Swedish wagons are a favorite among architects and engineers. It screams practicality and needlessly complicated simultaneously. 4. 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton with the W12 engine. With less than 3,000 delivered to the U.S., the automotive journalists loved these cars and the status-focused American market hated them. The Real Housewives of Orange County wouldn’t be caught dead in one. These hand built German masterpieces are basically a Bentley in a plebian trench coat.
5. 1995 Chevrolet Impala SS in any color you can find that hasn’t been pimped out (good luck on that one). These are truly the modern day Blues Brothers escape car. Basically, it is a cop car for your average Joe. With its Corvette LT1 engine and upgraded suspension, all you need is to throw some spotlights above the side mirrors and traffic will part like the Red Sea. Regardless of your lifestyle, there is an affordable and fun daily-driver out there that is just right for you. This car will be the kind of perfect that allows you to overlook its inadequacies and fondly call it some offbeat family name. So, instead of leasing another new or certified pre-owned bland sedan like some inborn reflex, have fun. revealed a problem; a Fuel Evaporative System problem. During my further investigation and visit to the Huntington Beach B.A.R at Golden West College, I discovered that this particular model year (1978 911 SC) was built in NOV 1977, has an earlier 1974 ‘77 Fuel Evaporative System in it, from the factory. The “FVP” ( Fuel Evaporative System) uses a black “Carbon Canister” mounted in the right side engine compartment. It’s filled with charcoalcarbon material that chemically collects and alters fuel fumes. The treated fumes flow to the air filter to be digested into the engine. The 1974-’77 system has three hoses on the carbon canister: • Nr. 1 A small 4.0mm hose for fumes from the fuel tank and Expansion Tank(s) venting; • Nr. 2 A 12.0 mm hose connected to the fan shroud and furnishes fresh air (from the fan) to the carbon canister. • Nr.3 A 12.0 mm hose from the carbon canister to the Air Filter. The 1974-77 “Carbon Canister” is part Nr. 171 201 801 with three hose

fittings, however the B.A.R manuals and the Porsche shop manual both show a 2 hose carbon canister for all 1978-83 911SC model years, Carbon Canister Nr. A 113 201 801 B. This 1978 911 SC 2-hose canister is different because it deletes the fan air to the canister. This is what the B.A.R. questioned and wanted to see installed on this car. Fortunately, I had my copy of the 1978 911 SERVICE INFORMATION book that clearly showed the 1977 and 1978 service changes. That helped, but B.A.R. thought Porsche would have upgraded and it for all 1978 model year cars. I had to assure them that Porsche, in their usual ways of reducing their old stock, would not update these changes until their supply of old parts was exhausted. Porsche has done this in the past. B.A.R. agreed, and as the 3.2 Carrera engine had demonstrated, it’s cleaner running in the 1978 911. With it’s now new 3 fuel hoses connected to the Carbon canister, it was now in compliance and recertified with a new B.A.R. sticker. Now, all smog checks will only need to refer to the new B.A.R. stickers. I found out that B.A.R. was most
patient and helpful in satisfying their needs and ours, and I actually enjoyed seeing their careful inspection and procedures. PS: MY own (evolved) 1968 911 never had any Fuel Evaporative System at all. However, over the decades I got tired of smelling fuel fumes after a fill up, so I installed one. I ended up with two “expansion tanks”, one behind the left head lamp and one small, white plastic “expansion tank” in the trunk. I installed these with all new synthetic rubber which is specified for “fuel hose” and with new clamps. Now, I don’t smell any fuel fumes at all! I recommend that any 30+ year old Porsche have its fuel system and fuel Evaporative hoses given a careful look over. All hoses should be dry and without any damp fuel residue on them (see page on leakage). All fuel hoses should be flexible, not hard. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN CLAMPS ON OLD HOSES! Once fuel hoses get old, hard and cracked, they are a fire waiting to happen! Godspeed Lee Rice

The invitation to this event is the real award and reward since only the best of the best are invited to attend this grand event each year. “The Amelia” is a 4 day celebration of automobiles from the past, present and the future, in many ways outdoing Pebble Beach Concours. This event is a must see, “bucket list” event for all car lovers and Porsche fans. The 2014 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, the 19th annual event, is scheduled for held March 7-9, 2014. your experiences with people who want to know what’s what and how to take part in our great club. It’s at Laguna Niguel Regional Park again this year. Existing member bring $5 bucks for hamburgers, hot dogs and a fun time. If you are a new member, just bring you; the hamburger is free as is the advice. But you will also meet our own C.L. Jarusek, my favorite naked policeman. To get that story you must show up! Need for Speed This last note is for our fast crowd, the Autocrossers. It’s the bargain of our Porsche world because it’s a chance to rev up your Stuttgart stormer and take it right out to the edge. There is always instruction available to take advantage of the expertise of those who have gone before. You can just show up and watch, but be careful; the urge for the famous “need for speed” often develops from one single brush with Porsches at full song. When you really should have had a V8 News for 2014 is that the V8 in the

Panamera, and perhaps the Cayenne, will be a V6 with twin turbos. This follows the recent European trend of diminished cylinders and displacement in favor of puffed up, or turbocharged, smaller motors. What you get is a supposedly greener power plant that is more palatable politically, if not in fact. In fact the newer motors are very potent and quite capable. But do they carry the cachet and the presence of the V8 rumble that is so much a part of the culture of power that enables the wallet opening opium? That, of course, is the question and much depends upon the answer. The current V8 is rated at 400 horsepower, our USA favorite measure of a power output. Power is one thing but the total experience includes power and prestige. Will the new configuration bring these in equal measure and continue the recent winning ways of our favorite brand? Until we meet again Okay, so further we travel into 2013! Take care and keep it “butter side up” as they say in the UK! See you at some Orange Coast event to come, I am sure.
