VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CL JARUSEK

An Important Message P

lease, always remember, it’s important to keep your email address current with pca.org. to assure you receive information on current and future planned PCA-OCR activities! The email program associated with your membership data at PCA National is the most used tool to notify OCR members of events. I’m always surprised when someone comes up to me after they’ve overheard or seen a comment on the PCAOCR App regarding a successful fun OCR event, and say “Gee CL, I didn’t know about that event.” Many of our OCR Club events are limited to a small amount of Club attendees due to several factors such as how much room is available, what’s a workable amount to have on a tour, etc. Our Club is very inclusive and Board Members/Event Chairs always try to communicate all events to all members whether it’s through email, Club Meeting, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram along with our website www.pcaocr.org; and the PCA-OCR App through member postings and the calendar. For example, I recently sent out an email blast on my Idyllwild Oktoberfest tour. I then get an email back from National advising me how many members it was sent to. My Oktoberfest email was sent to 2480 addresses, with 780 members not having an email address. Out of the 2480 addresses, 100 had opted out of receiving the emails (unsubscribed) and the total

“received” by members was 1600. I’m aware we all get spam emails every day. I usually delete more emails than I actually read. I do keep up with all of the emails however; hoping my great uncle, who went to Nairobi, will have left me something in his will. If you wish to unsubscribe you risk the chance you might miss that one great OCR Club event. Again, please make sure www. pca.org has your current email address. You know how things change, you change your internet service provider and no longer use Onetufguy@hotmail.com. You get married and now use dickandjane@gmail.com, but if www.pca.org doesn’t know you changed your email, you’re not going to receive your notifications. It’s so easy to update, just go to the PCA National site, www.pca.org and sign in. (You’ll need your member number in order to change your email information to your current email address.) You can update all of your information on the site including the new GT-3 you have in your garage. While you’re on the site, take advantage of receiving technical information on your car, renew your dues, check your car’s value and check the classifieds. It’s a really useful site and part of your membership benefits. Please go to the site and check it out! Many rely on the Pando to keep them current on upcoming events. However, when creating a magazine, there’s a variety of days to take into consideration such as article submission, layout, printing and distribution. So, since items submitted to the Pando must be received by the 25th of the prior month, it’s almost impossible for the Pando to be current on all events.

Again, every effort is made to communicate all events, whether on email, the PCA-OCR App, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram along with our website www.pcaocr.org. I have to admit, I do not live on Apps or a cell phone every moment, but I do review often and get my up-to-the date info. To get the App, go to your App store (app is free), search “pcaocr” and request to join. All members and advertisers are vetted to eliminate spam, and you can get up-to-the minute updates. You can even get the Billy Hufnagel Throw Back Thursday story of the week, you will enjoy (little bit of pressure for Billy to continue his submissions!) So to summarize, please go to PCA National to update your records (I have to do the same and change my Porsche from my Turbo to my current Panamera). Keep enjoying the Pando and check out our App, Twitter, website, etc. to keep up on the latest activities. There’s a lot of Porsche information, activities and events available for your review and participation! .

LETTERFrom the Editor Well, we’re on the threshold of the holiday season, so in addition to your own busy schedule; check out your November Pando for ideas on past, current and future activities, travel and gift giving opportunities to spark your imagination. First up, consider attending, observing and/or participating in one of PCA-OCR’s exciting Autocross Events, captured in words and pictures accompanying the recent September 17 Autocross event showcasing participant driving passion.

Story by Marcia Salans Photo by Gary Labb

Then, maybe next year, you’ll be one of the many (this year’s count was 150!) attending the wonderful Hearts and Garages Tour uniquely hosted by our Club Members providing delicious food, conversation and a glimpse of their own cars and collectibles. Speaking of memories, this year’s New Members Picnic certainly created a lot of special moments, from warm welcomes upon arrival, great food, friendship, the Goodie Store and a terrific display of Porsches spanning the entire Brand’s scope. So maybe next year you’ll plan on attending and/or helping out; either way you’ll have a wonderful time with new and current PCA-OCR Club members.

and while you’re at it, as you can see below, the Goodie Store always has some special must-have Porsche inspired apparel to purchase and appreciate. And who doesn’t want to get into their Porsche and drive to any one or all of the PCA and OCR technical, meeting and eating events noted throughout the November Pando especially the upcoming, heartwarming Toys For Tots on Saturday December 9, and “save the date” for our annual PCA-OCR Brunch, January 7, 2018 at the beautiful Tustin Ranch Golf Club ($55 p/person; more info to follow regarding registration, etc.) In closing, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season filled with peace, prosperity, good health and overflowing happiness; and please accept my sincere gratitude for your friendship and support. Book Review Story by Bruce Herrington

PORSCHE 70 YEARS There is No Substitute

by Randy Leffingwell, published: September 19, 2017 by Quarto Books, Minneapolis, MN There are many authors who write books about Porsches. Randy Leffingwell is arguably the most prolific and comprehensive writer of books about these cars. Hard to believe how recently it seems that he was attending Riverside Region’s Porsche Timeline and traveling around SoCal taking pictures of cars for inclusion in his book Porsche 60 Years! Now, we already and maybe a bit prematurely, have PORSCHE 70 YEARS coming to the book stores. This review is based on a pre-publication digital draft. Some specifics may change by the time the printed book hits the shelves. But overall, this is one of those must-have books for any Porschephile. There is an Introduction followed by thirty-six chapters, starting with the 356-1 of 1948 and concluding with a preview of the Mission E of 2020. Though presented in chronological order, the chapters deal with ‘topics,’ and often mix models together - “Chasing the Alphabet” covers the 356A-C cars, but “New Materials” deals only with the 904. Each of these chapters is very readable and informative. Copiously illustrated and basically short, each chapter is eminently suited to the busy individual who must do recreational reading in snatches. In comparison with most books about ‘Porsche,’ there is little about Ferdinand Porsche’s childhood, his work for other companies, and his WWII activities. This is a book about the company Porsche, not the man Porsche. Typical of a Leffingwell book, the photography (by many different

photographers) is outstanding and features more ‘intimate details’ than most books about Porsche automobiles. A nice touch (but possibly only in the electronic version) is that the chapter number is on the upper left of left page; chapter name is on the upper right of right hand page, making it easy to tell where one is in the book when casually perusing the material. This feature is especially useful when hunting for a particular topic amongst the 36 chapters. Coverage of production vehicles is very comprehensive. Though individual chapters are short, such rare production vehicles as the America Roadsters, the 916 (even the two 8 cyl 914s for the founders of Porsche), and all the iterations of the 911 are well covered. This reviewer knows of no other book providing as comprehensive and concise a description of the entire Porsche catalog as does PORSCHE 70 YEARS Befitting a book about Porsche’s history, there is extensive coverage of the race

cars. The 550 and 718 Spyders, and the 917 935/6 cars are relatively well known, but unique coverage of some of the little known race cars, like the 804, is included as well. It explains why the 910 was created out of sequence, and the 904 Kangaroo cars are described, as are the differences in the fabrication techniques between the 904 and 906 ‘plastic’ bodies. This book focused more on the engineering and the contributions of individuals than on race results, with many descriptions of (and quotations from); the individuals involved. This book tends to show the human side of the cars - the culture of their genesis, if you will. European (or maybe just modern in appearance), the layout of the book is itself a work of art, with an illustrated table of contents! PORSCHE 70 YEARS consists of 256 12 x 9-3/4 inch pages, with 200 color, 50 b-w photos. By the time you read this, the book should be available for $60.00 from your favorite book seller (ask for it), or from Quartoknows.com. November 2017 | PANDO 9

DRIVING SKILLS Story by Don Chapman Photo by Paul Novotne

How to Drive Fast Using Your Brakes Part II

Last month we reviewed the basics of your Porsche’s braking systems and we studied Threshold Braking as a very important technique that must be mastered to be faster on the track.

This month, we will focus on another important braking technique, Trail-Braking. Simply put, Trail-Braking is the practice of braking while turning and gradually “trailing” off the brakes as you pilot your Porsche through a turn. I know what you are thinking. In earlier “Drive Fast” articles, we mentioned it’s very important to get all of the braking done before turning into a corner. That still holds true for the most part. Most of the braking should be completed before entering the corner. It turns out that Trail-Braking is designed to take advantage of that little bit of grip that’s not being used to brake or turn the car. While Trail-Braking, in some cases,

12 PANDO | November 2017

can improve your lap times, it can also significantly reduce your margin for error. To fully understand Trail-Braking, we need to review a couple of the basic racing concepts covered in previous articles. As we have learned, applying brakes in a straight line results in a weight shift to the front of the vehicle. This weight shift forward results in increasing the available traction to the front tires. This weight shift forward also unweights the rear of the car, which in turn, reduces the available traction to the rear tires. Threshold-braking in a straight line would normally keep the rear tires within their reduced traction circle because they are only asked to do one task, slow your Porsche down. But, by adding a little extra steering input, the traction necessary for the rear tires to maintain a contact patch with the road surface is soon exceeded, resulting in the rear of the car “stepping out.” So, why would anyone want to Trail-Brake? 1. The most obvious reason to trail-brake is that you missed the braking point when

entering a corner, and you still need to reduce your speed enough to stay on the track. It happens to the best of us! This is a tricky task because you to need to apply just enough brake to maintain cornering grip to the rear tires. Too much brake pressure will result in the rear wheels locking up, and you’ll find yourself facing where you just came from. Smooth and gentle braking inputs in this recovery situation will help you make the corner. Obviously, this use of Trail-Braking is used as a recovery method and is certainly not a way to better your track time. It is, however, always a good thing to stay on the track. 2. It may be beneficial to Trail-Brake if your car is prone to understeer when entering a corner. (This is where you turn the wheel and your car continues to go straight because you have exceeded the maximum grip of the tires.) If your car has a tendency to understeer, a light application of the brakes into a corner will shift more weight to the front wheels, giving them more traction and will help the car to turn in. This may also result in a little faster corner entry.

3. And finally, once you have mastered all the cornering basics and are continually working to better your lap times, TrailBraking may be used to further shave off those precious seconds. As your driving skills improve, you can begin to leave your braking point later into (and through) the corner. When you begin your steering input into a corner, you must correspondingly reduce your braking input until the brakes are fully released at the apex and the throttle can then be progressively applied. As with most Autocross and Time Trial track driving events, the most important thing to achieve is a faster corner exit speed. If Trail-Braking will result in getting you off the preferred racing line and reduce your corner exit speed, it should not be used. I once read “TrailBraking should be regarded as a high-risk, low-reward activity.” “But sometimes Joel, you just have to say what the heck” (pardon the slightly revised line from Risky Business)!

As always, we have amazing instructors and driving events available to assist you throughout the year in perfecting your driving techniques. Come join us at our next Autocross or Drivers Education (DE) event and say hi. We look forward seeing you!

This diagram illustrates the difference in available traction to the front wheels vs the rear wheels during straight line braking.

September 10, 2017 PCA-OCR Autocross Walter’s Porsche of Riverside 2017 Auto-X Championship Series Story by Bruce Powers, Photos by Paul Novotne For the PCA-OCR Autocross returns to El Toro for the 8th Autocross event of the 2017 Walter’s Porsche of Riverside Autocross Championship Series. We recognize, thank and sincerely appreciate our Series Sponsor, Walter’s Automotive Group, and Porsche of Riverside for the support to the program for the past 9 years; and our 2017 Series Support Sponsors GMG and MOMO of Italy. Cape Auto, located in Mission Viejo was the Event Day Sponsor, and James Buck was on hand to address the Porsche Autocross crowd and promote his business. Top of the event announcement to the attendees was the BIG NEWS that we will stage an autocross event at Anaheim Stadium December 10th, in their south parking lot. All Autocross participants, current and past, should be excited to hear this news. Our current situation with the runway at the former MCAS El Toro, located inside what is now called “The Great Park,” is becoming ever smaller and tighter with each passing year and months. Currently, The Great

Park and Five Points Communities are developing a temporary amphitheater at one end of the runway. While not taking up space on the runway, word has it the runway will serve as a parking lot for the venue, and we don’t know how and if that will impact our AX event at this time. The Anaheim Stadium venue gives us a much larger amount of acreage than what we currently have at El Toro, configured in a larger rectangle (rather than the narrow runway); which should give us more room to set up courses with more variation, and in general, a little more openness allowing more creative course designs. Additionally, it’ll allow a much greater area for parking cars, trucks and trailers in a larger paddock area. The venue of the Big A parking lot is centrally located in our Orange Coast Region and is much more accessible with the freeway on-ramps and offramps within a ½ mile of the course. It’s on pavement that is in perfect condition and, is regularly cleaned. The cost of the Stadium Parking lot is much greater than the El Toro Venue, resulting in a price increase for the

events to be held at Anaheim. In order to test out all aspects of Autocross at the Big A, we are going to hold the December 2017 and February 2018 Autocrosses as test events. Depending on the reception, logistics of set up, take down and attendee enthusiasm, we’ll determine the viability of this venue for the future PCA-OCR Autocross events. After that big news announcement, we went on to the fun part of the day, driving and having fun with our Porsche’s of course! We always have first-time participants, and they’re partnered up with an instructor for the day to learn about getting more FUN out of their car and driving the course. Our Instructors always have a friendly attitude and make sure the “new to AX people” have a “fun-tastic” experience! The Instruction they receive is always done in a manner allowing them to grow as a driver while having the time of their life in their Porsche. The course for this event had some very fun features not utilized in recent memory. Speaking of course design, we are currently in a phase of building a cadre of course designers. It’s great November 2017 | PANDO 17

to have fresh and different perspectives on an autocross course, and we hope to achieve just that by having a few different designers throughout the future seasons. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member of our PCA-OCR Autocross course designer cadre, please contact Co-Chairs Bruce Powers or Eric Budai. This event’s course was very well received. Tom Frecentese drew up a course that used all the space very creatively, with a cross over in the first ⅓, a fairly open right hand sweeper, slaloms, decreasing radius turns and various other elements in-between.

Aaron Rios and Parker Scott at the front of tech inspection line.

Thank you again to our 2017 Autocross Championship Series Sponsor Walter’s Porsche of Riverside and our Series Support Sponsors GMG and Momo of Italy; and last but not least our Event Day Sponsor Cape Auto, James Buck! Our October and November events of our 2017 Autocross Series will be back out on the Runway at El Toro. Then our December event at the Big A in the south parking lot of Anaheim Stadium! Registration will open earlier than normal, so please advise your AX friends. An Email will also be sent out to all on the Motorsportreg.com list plus an email will be sent out via the club’s email list. We welcome all PCA Members to come out and see what Autocross is about. New Members Story by Sandy Schwartz, Membership Chair Photos by Marcia Salans and Gary Labb

It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday at Laguna Niguel Regional Park for the Annual New Member Picnic.

New Members, as well as current Members, were greeted by Monica & Denny Asbury and the always awesome Goodie Store. The parking lot filled up quickly with, wait for it, you guessed it, many outstanding Porsche examples; and Members enthusiastically walked the parking lot admiring and talking about each other’s cars. We fired up the grills and soon the smell of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs filled the air while chilled sodas, potato salad and a variety of cookies were available to enthusiastic Members lining up, then sitting, and chatting under the shaded, reserved picnic area. The day culminated with a welcome and several OCR Club announcements from CL Jarusek our Vice President, followed by a group picture of the attending New Members. As always a big thank you to the volunteers that helped organize this successful event: Monica & Denny Asbury for Registration / Goodie Store, Scott Fleener and Jerry O’Donnell my set up and teardown crew, Chris Brooksby for always working the grill and a special thank you to my wife Catherine for all her help. We had a great turn out and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event! 22 PANDO | November 2017

Hearts and GaragesTour Saturday, August 12, 2017 Story by Diane Scsigulinsky Photos by Cindy Badish-Kerns

Ready, set, go! On Saturday, August 12, 2017, more than 150 Porsche enthusiasts enjoyed the 17th annual PCA-OCR Hearts and Garages Tour. The first stop began in Yorba Linda and the last stop ended in Costa Mesa. Stop 1 - Appetizers : Appetizers were the first stop hosted by Lisa Taylor and Tom Ridings. We were greeted by parking attendants when we arrived at the property. Once we were checked in, we were free to move about the beautiful Flying L Ranch, enjoying delicious appetizers while oohing and aahing at Lisa’s beautiful Porsche collection in her “Chick Cave,” Some of the cars on display were their 2007 Black GT3 RS purchased from Patrick Dempsey, a 2017 Amethyst Turbo S, a 2016 Rubystar GT3 RS, and a 1973 Olive Green

911 E. Along with the appetizers, we enjoyed a cold drink from the cold coffee truck which was perfect since the temperature was a warm 94 degrees. Lisa and Tom were wonderful hosts and spent time talking to the group about their collection and their passion for racing. Stop 2 - Salads : Before leaving, we were handed a map and address for the second stop. The salad was hosted by Dan and Anita Pittman at their home in Orange. The private street up to their home’s steep driveway was very long which allowed us to park all the cars along the street. Wow was that impressive! On the menu was a green salad, cucumber yogurt salad, and fruit salad which were displayed in the Pittman’s newly remodeled

garage. Our group enjoyed another relaxing time eating and visiting with new and old friends outside their sprawling yard with an amazing beautiful view of the city. Before we left for the main course, we were informed that a 2008 Black Turbo Porsche was rolling down the hill!!!!! A neighbor was kind enough to stop it by placing stone blocks under the tires. Gregory and Margaret Heinlein definitely dodged a bullet thanks to neighbor Tom! Stop 3 - Main Course : Our next stop for the main course was at a commercial garage in Costa Mesa. Our hosts were Mark Cilani and Ellen Taylor. Mark and Ellen provided us with a Mexican Fiesta including tacos, rice, beans, salsa, guacamole, and chips. We enjoyed our dinner inside the large garage that was decorated with centerpieces of glass jars filled with Mark’s tools. Ellen is very creative! Besides the green 1979 911 ex-race car from the 1980’s and the 2007 Porsche RSR, one wall of shelves was filled with about 20 different racing helmets. There was also a kitchen, bar, 65” TV screen and pool table. Talk about the perfect “Man Cave,” it was amazing!

30 PANDO | November 2017

Stop 4 - Dessert : Our last and final stop for dessert was hosted by Brent Martini at his commercial garage, also in Costa Mesa. Brent’s garage was filled with about a dozen beautiful collectibles. Some of his show-stoppers were his “50 year-old girl,” a 37k mile, all original Ivory/Black 1967 911, a 1996 993 RS with clubsport options painted Traffic Yellow, and Brent’s favorite, when asked, an Acid/Bahama Blue 1974 Euro Carrera 2.7. We enjoyed sipping wine and consuming some very sinful crepes presented by Crepes Bonaparte. Club members had their choice of the classic banana and strawberry, lemon zest and even glutenfree topped with whipped cream. These crepes were so delicious some guests went back for seconds. Shh, don’t tell! Peggy Huddleston was the chair for this event and presented all the hosts with a commemorative plaque and bottle of wine in appreciation for opening their garages for the enjoyment of all club members. New to the Porsche Club, this was my first Hearts and Garages Tour. It was a spectacular success due to the volunteer help of several club members who deserve recognition. Along with our gracious hosts, Bunny Falk and Gail Reinholdt arrived early to brave the heat and assist in getting started with check-in and general information for those first-timers and Jim Reinholdt for his many years of volunteering as head parking

attendant. We don’t know what we would do without his willingness and direction. We would also like to show our appreciation to first-time attendees Gary and Joelle Cohn for their willingness to be the last ones out to make sure everyone knew where they were going!

Stop 4 - Dessert : Hosted by Brent Martini

Of course, the best part of the day is the mystery of what each garage has to offer. As you have read above, our hosts really went all out providing another memorable day. To honor our hosts, you can email them or give them a hardy thank you when you see them! Special PCA-OCR thanks to: Lisa Taylor and Tom Ridings - Appetizer Dan and Anita Pittman - Salad Mark Cilani and Ellen Taylor - Main Course Brent Martini and Steve Sandacz - Dessert Again, we hope to see you at next year’s Hearts and Garages Tour. You will thoroughly enjoy this memorable experience. WHO WILL BE THAT NEXT GREAT HOST? PLAN NOW FOR 2018!!

Cone Zone Update

by Rob Greene / Photo by Gerry Crews

Thank you to all who have participated in the previous cone zone series. We hope it has added to the enjoyment of the Breakfast Club meeting at Original Mike’s. We’ll continue model types and different types of equipment. A special thank you to everyone who provided ideas for this third cone zone series.

The plan for the monthly Cone Zone themes follows: • November: Any Porsches with 18” diameter wheels •

December: Any Porsches with 19” diameter wheels

January 2018: No Porsche Alley Cone Zone – Attend the OCR Brunch!

February 2018: Any Porsche with 20” and up diameter wheels

Cone Zone Themes

We hope November 2017 - February 2018 is self-explanatory. The multitude of Porsche and non-Porsche wheel types displayed in November-December 2017 and February 2018 should provide a variety of looks for all to admire. I hope we all continue to have fun with the Cone Zone. Don’t forget to check the Pando for any schedule revisions.

RICE’S

Ramblings Story and Photos by Lee Rice

Monterey Bay welcomes Porsche’s 911 at Laguna Seca, GOD’S COUNTRY. PS the 911 mid-motor won some races and proved the merits of the 914 idea now in FIRST LEVEL RACING. See your Panorama for good reads, and who knows where this may lead? Think of electric motors made small and log shaped, and batteries that are thin, flat, and all their weight under the entire floor, and there is room for almost anything.

“Look. Did you see......... “November?” Gads, November already and about time! This summer was a warm one and never seemed to go away. Then the signs of change: Football! Football deals, back-room trades, who’s injured and who is good, and yes, they will soon be on the green sweating it out in skimpy uniforms and padding. But, that is only a sure sign that coming soon we’ll see them in jackets, coats, and those jet engine-type heaters. WINTER is a coming! In my world, fall came in Monterey’s Laguna Seca (I refuse to call a beloved race track by any corporate name!) Laguna Seca’s Can Am race day was warm but the evenings were cool. You brought jackets, sweaters and such. Then our local Riverside Raceway, always

scalding hot, dusty-smoggy (coughcough!!) but if you worked pit crew, the evening and nights were definitely cool to cold. That was our sign of a long, hot summer finally ending. After the traditional R.I.R. 6 hour SCCA Enduro, it was ‘season over,’ and the coming Holiday Season.

than: “magazines” or “rags.”) Anyway, the human part of our love of motor cars was not just revealing, but you realized these car people were actually human after all. The writing about their passion, commitment, and cost of this affection, was even more so humanizing. That was new to me, in print anyway.

I remember reading in 1962-3 or so, in the English Motoring Journal, about some Formula 1 drivers, wrenches, fans and team owners, at a Christmas gathering and talking about the past season, and of course next year, but it was mostly a story about their families, friends, and the Christmas Holidays.

We in the old “Porsche Family of Owners,” and sorry, but mostly it was and is mostly in the 911 types, we had a kind of family of motor heads who shared so many things we needed to not feel so alone.

I was amazed as our car magazines were mostly about what’s hot, what’s not, and a lot of strictly car stuff. All normal, I suppose, but I found the English “journals” (a term they like and seems more polished

I found that Corvette owners, whom I had once belonged to, laughed at our puny little “Volkswagen Car,” and no one else seemed to understand them: “Why do you like that crazy little German car, after all, they started the war, didn’t they!” Yes we heard that! November 2017 | PANDO 37

But those other brand owners saw something else too. It was a serious commitment to driving, not only a different car, but also driving in a different way as well. They didn’t know we had to drive Porsches that way to keep them in control. Some saw our 2.0 Liter 911 catching up to Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Alfas, and even Cobras going IN, but especially coming OUT of the turns! And they began to wonder why, and HOW? Like an old, bold, pilot, you had to learn new things, practice them, refine them, and do them automatically to stay alive. It made sense, after a while, and I can state that what I learned on the road and track saved our lives in our Volvo Station Wagon and our Dodge Caravan. It becomes instinct, Thank God. So as this Holiday Season begins, I like to reflect how fortunate I am to have a 911 and have gone through so many driving and technical adventures with my 911. However, I mostly like to share my ups and downs in finding those technical solutions. One last point : your PANDO is not fake news. You read what your membership and sponsors, and those who love these cars experience and feel about their pride ‘n joy. And we are all just some people who are glad to be able to own and DRIVE them!

Simple Fuel Pump relay move in back

We tell it like it is, the good, the bad and the not so pretty. All the more better to inform you all and keep you in your Porsche, no matter what type it is. OCR members, I appreciate your patience with my early 911 electrical articles. However, these are serious problems, and I hope simple solutions for early 911 & 930 owners to keep their pride on the road.

Not my Porsche, you don’t! “I just waxed it!”

38 PANDO | November 2017

I got to thinking and drew a sketch for another, even more simplified fix, well no, a repair. Well, actually an Upgrade for the 911 Turbo fuel pump system.

So being as simple and as basic as I can to demonstrate in this simple drawing. Back in the engine compartment, the round black relay is the Air Flow Sensor Relay. This relay provides a ground for the front two Fuel Pump Relays at their terminal 85s. YOU need the following inputs to make your fuel Pump Relay work in the back. Battery power (30), “ON” Power (15), and a Ground Source when the engine is running: Battery Power (30) is supplied from the RED wire from the Engine Electrical panel’s fuse on S-22 & S-23.

“ON” Power (15) is provided to the Air Flow Sensor Relay, on its 0.5 BK wire. Note: NO rear window heater relay. NO voltage regulator in the way, as engine has internal voltage regulator. Coil re-located to remove it from engine heat on.

Ground Source, when engine is running, from the BRN/BLK wire on the Air Flow Relay 85 pin. So why not remove the load from the forward electrical system and move the rear fuel Pump relay to the rear Electrical Panel? You can remove the front relay and socket for the rear Fuel Pump (Nr. II) and move it to the rear engine compartment? OR, you can, as I have done, buy a new MINI 5 blade relay, with a wall mount with new female connectors. Then in front, remove the Fuel Pump Relay (round Red relay) and wrap the rubber 5-pin rubber terminal in a strong plastic bag and ty-wrap it around the wires. Then carefully tuck it back behind the electrical panel out of the way. REMEMBER it has battery power to its #30 terminal at all times! I removed the rear Engine Electrical Panel’s black A.F.S.C.R. and pulled the relay and plug out of the panel. Then I carefully cut the black plastic wrapping off the harness wiring about 3” from the plug until I had about 3-4 inches of exposed wires. Then I cut into the black wire (there’s only one) and added into it an additional black wire and spliced into it a black wire of the same size, and ran this wire to the new added on relay pin #86. Then, I cut and added on a new length brown wire of the same size to the BN/ BK wire and ran it to the new relay’s #85 pin. Then, I ran a red wire from fuse S-23 to the new relay pin #30.

Finally, I took the RD/GN wire from under the electrical panel, cut it and capped the wire Not going to the single push on/off connection. I spliced a new red wire on the fuel pump side and ran that wire to the new relay’s #87 terminal. This is enough for now, but next year I will show a complete replacement of all the old German ATC fuse system and upgrade to ATO fuses and all new Mini Relays. EVERYTHING IS ALREADY HERE:

connections in back. Then simply unplug the front Fuel Pump Relay Nr. II and bag it. Ty-wrap it, and push it back inside the electrical panel out of the way. 5. Now, install the new relay mount on the aluminum Engine Electrical Panel and run wires as shown with insulated splices and connect to the existing RED / GREEN wire from fuel pump relay 87 RD/GN going to Fuel Pump II . Godspeed

1. BATTERY POWER (30): at Fuse panel. S-23 & S-24 2. KEY ON Power (15): is supplied to the Engine Compartment’s Air Flow Sensor Control Relay, the round black relay at its 0.5 BLACK wire, supplying 15 power to the relay. 3. Ground source (85): from the black relay (A.F.S.C.R.)’s 0.5 BROWN/ BLACK wire, going all the way up to the front electrical panel and to both Fuel Pump Relay terminals ( 85s ).
