President’s Message Story by Gordon Williams

Happy Holidays to all, Fall is here! We all dusted off our broomsticks and made it through Halloween without any major incident, and now it’s time to begin thinking about food, family and funding for our holiday proclivities. As usual your Porsche Club will not disappoint in this area. First, and most importantly, let us all give a hearty “congratulations” to our ex-president, Nicole, and her husband Cooper on the birth of their first child, Hudson, on October 12th! Rumor has it

he was driving a mid-eighties brown 911 around Orange this weekend. I’m quite sure he will be volunteering as soon as he can walk and speak on his own. This month and next bring us a couple of our most anticipated activities of the year, and this year we are trying some new things that are sure to please the majority of our membership. First, the November 17th Toys for Tots caravan and USMC weapons display at Bolsa Chica State Beach. This event begins at 10 am and is a great opportunity to see your Marine Corps in action. $10 at the gate for parking and a new toy will get you in, then we will be displaying our vehicles for the Marines as a bit of a quid pro quo. PLEASE let’s have a good turn out for this event! The more the merrier and the easier it will be to make this a recurring activity. Thank you Major Andy Roberts, 5th Battalion, 14th Marines (and club member) for taking ownership and setting this up for all of our members to enjoy! The next event is our annual Holiday Celebration. This one is going to be

NOVEMBER 2012

something special that I’m sure all of you will enjoy. Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 2 from approximately 10:15 am until 2:30 pm for our first ever Champagne Harbor Cruise and Brunch. This event will most likely be a sell out so the sooner you make your reservations the better! By the time you read this we will have online registration for the event on MotorsportReg.com. Tickets will be in the neighborhood of $60 per person. Thank you Maryann Marks and Peggy Huddleston for setting this up this year. We had a great Oktoberfest Tour and Julian Tour that was led by our Vice President, Greg Lush, not to mention all of our driving events led by Christine, Chuck, James, Steve and our Autocross team. Thanks to all of you for making our Club the success that it is. With that thought I will close, but remember to say “thanks” to one of our volunteers this month and I look forward to seeing you at one of our many activities this Holiday Season. See you on the road., Ho Ho Ho, Gordo

Editor’s Notes Story by Garey Cooper we miss the light of the sun, shining upon the roads we run. All Porsches and friends with us delight; and miss that warm summer sight. ‘Tis the season As I write this, a whole set of goblins, witches, spider men and princesses are days away from descending upon us demanding their sweets, treats and no tricks. And in not that long a time the family will be gathered around a dinner table laughing (we certainly do hope) and sharing stories of Thanksgivings from years past. It seems that we have these wonderful holidays in compensation for the lesser daylight and earlier evenings that come in the winter season. And Garey & Maxine Cooper after the race at Monza, Italy while I am an outside kind of guy, I truly do love the Thanksgiving time, As winter increases its colder clinch and wonderful and magic as I hope yours will shadows fall earlier on our garden walls, be! sweet nostalgia calls upon warmer days, when upon the road we played. How

Go Orange Coast Region! Each year the Porsche Club of America has USA national celebration of our favorite Marque, this is called “The Parade”. This year was the 57th such Parade and it was held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Now I’ve never made it to one of these but it is certainly on my bucket list. There are many activities at the Parade, including the venerable Concours, a monumental Autocross, the Parade itself and sundry other opportunities to eat, drink and be unusually merry. This year, as in many years past, your fellow Orange Coasters did quite well at the Parade. In the “Thoroughbred Racers”, under Performance Touring category, Jeffrey & Marge Lewis won in their 1997 911 GT1… Hey Jeffrey bring that thing to the Breakfast Club! In the same Thoroughbred Racers category, under Full Performance, Herb and Rose Wysard won in their very delightful 1952 Glockler-Porsche. I (Continued on Page 32)

Monza Formula 1 September 2012 Story by Garey Cooper

Tina, Garey and Maxine at Monza

It has occurred to me when I think on the rightness of it all, that being a race fan is not of any particular distinction or deeply intellectual stripe. Indeed in the “modern” era it may be seen as just the opposite. A race of almost any kind is a place where vast sums of money are spent to utilize resources in the non-essential pursuit of speed, or occasionally a broken record or bone. But God help me, I do love it. My pulse begins its increased tempo at the moment when over the distance I can hear a highly-strung racing car coming to strident and audible life. I exult in the color, spectacle, speed and yes, it must be admitted, the slight (thankfully today) chance of danger. I think or suppose it must be very deep in the DNA of us, Homo Sapiens. There has been a fascination with speed and sight since VERY early on. The Greeks of Constantinople rioted famously in the middle sixth century over chariot racing… no less with maybe a little more. The city was convulsed for a week.

And in the end they went back to the Hippodrome and watched more racing. I would imagine early cavemen organized foot races, which were watched to see who could escape the largest carnivore and come home with the days catch. So today we spend money and watch young men and women hurl themselves through space at higher speed and velocity than we ourselves have or have had. We rejoice in their adroit manipulation of machines or small and large balls or even their very bodies. We almost all do watch, and we fall or rise with our hero’s. With this year’s trip to Europe we had the chance to join Mark and Tina Trewartha and Jay and Marjorie Warren on a trip to see the Monza Grand Prix and the storied old racetrack of the same name. Famous Monza, always one of the fastest tracks and one of the most unforgiving of tracks, contains fascination and disaster in equal measure. We had absolutely no problem deciding to join and when the day came we were at the hotel in Milan ready to go! We chose to stay in Milan, as it is the biggest city in proximity to Monza itself, which is a town as well as a racetrack. Milan has fabulous history, fabulous food, fabulous people and that for which we are most thankful; Gelato. In fact, we might have labeled this trip

the “Formula 1 and Gelato” appreciation society scramble to Italy. The Monza track is large and is from another age. So you have multiple paths, some of them quite long to get to the track and to get around the track. Mark Trewartha, Tina and I, being the hard-core race fans, went to the track on Saturday to watch the “knock out” qualifying race. “Knock Out” means that in three separate qualifying sessions slower cars are slowly seeded out and at the last session only the top 10 cars run for the pole position. It is a brilliant idea. We watched Alonzo post the fastest time in the first session and then saw that he could not even equal that time in the following two qualifying sessions. Instead Lewis Hamilton posted a virtuoso performance virtually flying his car around the track to take the fastest time and ultimately the pole when the sessions were over. On the way home by bus, train and underground with around 1,000 of Milan’s finest race fans in very close proximity, we talked about that time. For Sunday, Mark and I used our experience gained from the previous days commute to suggest that a few Euros well spent could soften the “getting there” to the race on Sunday. Pooling our money we hired a taxi for the day driven by “Max” a young long-haired Italian fellow who, besides driving us to and from the track, stole every female heart in the group. He had long hair and a winning

PCA-OCR’s 2012 Charity Story by Chris & Dick De’Rose

Another year of fun Porsche Club activities is coming to an end and the holidays are almost here. This “Spotlight Cover Feature” of the Pando is going to be a little different from previous ones. On November 10th active duty US Marines and Veterans all over the world will celebrate the 237th birthday of the Marine Corps. In a cake cutting ceremony, the first piece will be served to the oldest Marine present, while the second piece is served to the youngest. Then on the 11th, we honor all Military Veterans, past and present, through memorial services throughout the country. We hope you find a moment to honor and thank them. About a year ago we decided to get involved with the Dana Point 5th Marine Support Group by volunteering at fundraising events. We also adopted two families, while their men were deployed to Afghanistan. Both of them are actually Navy Medics attached to the United States Marine Corps USMC. Jeremy (on the right) returned home recently, while Ryan came home at Christmas. However, he is once again deployed to beautiful Afghanistan. Both men, when they arrived home beyond tired, made our home their first stop to remove their yellow ribbons from our flag. We felt very honored. It is a very difficult lifestyle and it’s hard to imagine living it. They sacrifice so much. We have had a lot of good

times together and are looking forward to our friendships lasting a lifetime. PCA/OCR’s official charity for 2011 and 2012 is the Semper Fi Fund (SFF). Semper Fi is short for Semper Fidelis, which is Latin for “Always Faithful” and is the official motto of the USMC. Semper Fi is more than a slogan, it’s a lifestyle. When we were drawn for the featured member story and cover photo for the Pandemonium, we decided to spotlight PCA-OCR’s chosen charity, the Semper Fi Fund. It was our hope to have some Marines who benefitted from the Fund in the cover photo, but due to privacy concerns it wasn’t possible. Our special thanks go out to our club member Major Andy Roberts and his men for helping us with the magazine cover by loaning us his USMC “toys” for a very cool background. We are also very grateful to professional photographer Geoff Ragatz of Geoff Ragatz Photography in Laguna Beach for the cover photo. Geoff donated an afternoon for the photo shoot, when he could have been out working and making money. A Note From the SFF Founder Dear SFF Family and Friends, We are delighted to share our eighth anniversary and our latest updates with you! I am happy to report that after

NOVEMBER 2012

eight years, our team is as committed and passionate as we were the day we picked up our incorporation papers in May 2004. With you by our side, we have been able to help our wounded and critically ill Marines and Sailors, and other service members who were injured while attached to Marine units, with over $62 million in assistance! With you by our side, we’ve helped 8,000 service members, and many of their family members, from point of injury or illness to recovery! With you by our side, we’ve built a Fund that has maintained an A+ rating with the American Institute of Philanthropy and four stars (highest rating) from Charity Navigator! With you by our side, we will continue to take this critically important mission forward to make sure our ninth year brings as much hope, inspiration and joy to those we are privileged and honored to assist: our service members and their families. You have helped create a Fund that is relevant and critically important in today’s time of transition, as we stay faithful to those injured on the battlefield and in training accidents, those who are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses while serving their country, and those who are at home, living with catastrophic injuries (both visible and invisible) from Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, more than ever, we are committed to strengthening our efforts to sustain the Fund and make sure we (Continued on Page 20)

“Labor” Day Event

Story by Chris Barrington

Marius & Ziggy driving a Cayman S

“Event Sponsor” Bill Brewster, The Porsche Specialist

The eighth event of the 2012 Walter’s PorschePCA-OCRAuto-XChampionship Series was held on September 9, 2012 at El Toro Fields, a little over one week after Labor Day. When you think about it, the term “labor” is fitting when participating in an auto-x event. Before I discuss why this term is appropriate, let me begin by thanking our series sponsors Walter’s Automotive Group, Global Motorsports Group and our event sponsor Bill Brewster, The Porsche Specialist for their continuing support. Without them, we would not get this excellent opportunity to push our Porsches to the limit. I would also quickly like to add that Walter’s now has a Fiat dealership as well! In talking to the uninitiated about auto-x, I find myself using the term “fun” to describe it. Perhaps, a more appropriate term could be “busy” or “labor intensive.” Before the event we’re checking over every inch of the car to ensure nothing is leaking and everything looks to be in good shape. We’re loading up a tire pressure gauge, tools, extra fluids, a canopy and chairs, maybe another set of tires, or in my case all of the above and a host of spare parts to make sure I don’t miss out on any runs. Before you get the opportunity to even turn one lap, we’re busy shuffling through the all-important tech inspection, then track walk, drivers meeting and student/instructor pairings. We’re busy thinking which side to enter a slalom, what surface changes occur and where (if you’re not, you should

be), when our run group is up, when our corner working duties are up and what starting tire pressures should we go with given the temperature. Finally, when your run All Serviced by Bill Brewster! group flag hits the top of the flag pole, you grab your helmet, maybe some gloves, turn on your camera(s), adjust your seat and check your gauges. A green flag! Hands are moving, feet are operating pedals, your heart rate is elevated and you’re hardly blinking; but for this small window of time, you couldn’t feel more pure. Bill Brewster prepared and piloted by our own Christian Van You’re not thinking about Fleet clinching 2nd best raw time of the day! money, politics or all the work required Looking back at the action, in the to get the car on track. With laser focus hotly contested CC08 class, David and wide eyes, you’re experiencing Witters in his ’73 914 just eked out a win something that shouldn’t be possible: over Rod Taylor in his ’69 911T by one being so “busy” you’re physically and tenth of a second. Slightly in front of this mentally taxed. Yet the moment you tight battle in the BRI was Christian Van cross the finish line, you feel alive and Fleet (pictured) at the top of the heap, refreshed. followed closely by James Buck. So how do you condense this Marius and Ziggy Pudzemis experience into a term anybody can (pictured) placed 18th and 25th in the understand? The best I could do was, fun BRI, respectively; not bad at all piloting In walking around the event, I couldn’t their newly acquired Cayman S. Book Review:

Carroll Shelby: The Authorized Biography by Rinsay Mills, published by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN. Review by Bruce Herrington Carroll Shelby was 89 when he died last May. This book makes clear that he lead a much more complex, mufti-faceted life than most people would have imagined, making for a very fascinating, eye-opening biography. It is a well written, true-life narrative: it is a great read for any one who likes life stories, even they don’t know the difference between a Shelby and a Sherman; a sports car race and a stock car race. This book, Carroll Shelby; the authorized biography, is a very comprehensive book of stories, mostly quoted from interviews with people who worked with Shelby on his many ventures. The book is incredibly detailed and intensely personal, with encyclopedic coverage of the races in which he drove, managed the team, or manufactured the cars entered. The first third of the book is about his ‘rustic’ childhood and his years as a driver. He was racing other people’s cars of various makes, in a wide variety of classes, both in the USA and in Europe. Included are many ‘racing reports’, his personal recollections of races run and the activities and associations that occurred between races. Very few of these stories are dull: even THE George Lucas got into the act, and a surprising cast of famous characters in motor-racing float in and out of the stories, not the least of which was a high-school kid who came and helped out summers – named Edsel Ford! The middle third of Carroll Shelby; the authorized biography deals with his ‘glory years’ in the development, manufacture and racing of Cobras, and then various Mustang variants, not to mention involvement with Sunbeam

Tigers, and of course, the GT40 and even the Ford GT. Throughout the book, there are allusions to Shelby as a super salesman: not so much in selling goods, but in bringing people on-board with his way of thinking. No-where is that more in evidence than in the way the Cobra project fell into place almost overnight (after years of indirect groundwork). It was by Shelby’s convincing AC Cars of Thames Ditton, England and Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, Michigan that hot-rodding a Ford engine and transmission into an AC Ace chassis was a wonderful idea, well worth supporting financially. The Cobra was designed and developed to be a production car – 100 examples in the first batch. But racing was never far from Shelby’s mind, and the very first example to reach the

NOVEMBER 2012

US was tweaked for racing. FIA Homologation was applied well before the first batch was completed. The extensive and intensive coverage of the races, along with the preparation and development of the race cars, will captivate any armchair racer or racing mechanic. The last third of the book deals with the evolution of the other projects such as the GT40 and the Shelby Mustangs and, particularly, the Fordization of Shelby American. True, racing and race car development continued, but increasingly it was Ford Dearborn that was calling the shots and Carroll came to feel, and in effect be, a hired hand rather than The Boss. Overall, the story of ShelbyAmerican and Ford appears to be another instance of the tendency of centralized control to stifle creativity, initiative and success, though the GT40 did, finally, beat the Ferrari. The discussion of the various allegations of ‘manipulations’ on behalf of Henry Ford II to determine the ‘winner’ of the ‘66 Le Mans race, may smack of power politics at it’s worst, but as Ken Miles, arguably the most affected by the situation, put it, “He who pays the piper calls the tune”. Interesting reading, indeed ! In retirement from almost all things automotive, Shelby became involved in such things as conducting African Safaris (with internationally famous customers) and African beef ranching. This all being done in the midst of civil/revolutionary unrest, which included the execution of the national leader who had been the social host and supporter of Shelby’s ranching venture. What a story! And then there was the motorcycle wheel business... and Carroll Shelby’s Original Texas Chili, the Toyota 2000GT, (Continued on Page 34)

Rice’s Ramblings:

918 Evo Racing

Story by Lee Rice

918

This is going to be a name we are going to remember for a long time. This once only speculated 918 from PORSCHE, continues today to develop from a dream and a prototype into both a production 918 and a racing 918. The concept is complete and is proven by the functioning prototypes, and has moved on to manufacturing. Porsche has seemed absent lately from the exotic, wild styles, super expensive cars we see monthly in nearly every issue of some car magazine. We see excited headlines with raves about the newest, quickest and fastest cars from the Italian, British, Japanese, or even American super-carmakers, with new V-6s, V-8s, V-10s, or V-12s. Some with superchargers, some with turbochargers and some come with two turbos, three turbos (compounded) or even four turbos. They also come with 5, 6, 7, or maybe 8 speed transmissions and some even have a real stick shift. (more and more we see that manual transmission is not even offered) The rage now is for paddle shifting or flipper shifters mounted on the steering wheel, either on top, on back or on a console. It seems everyone has a different theory of how those are supposed to work. And all of these cars continue to stack every conceivable electric super-duper gadget imaginable in them. Styling is wild! Like an imaginative, huge, starving fish with it’s wide-open mouth gulping everything in sight! What

is that all about? Is it me or do these cars come as some kind of art form, seeming to state something that is aggressive, stand off-ish? I haven’t figured that one out. I started wondering why Porsche had not offered ‘something’ to counter these cars? Porsche still gets made fun of with our tail-heavy, flat, six-cylinder 911 engines in back (never mind that in a fair race the evolution 911 has kicked all their tails for 40+ years and still does!) But that is not addressing the flash of glory these so-called “super cars” get during a few months of magazine glory. But what about Porsche? Yes, there was the Carrera GT. It made lots of headlines as a fantastic, technical marvel for a road car. There was no doubt the Carrera GT was a real super car, evolved from the racing “RS Spyder”, but in the minds of most Porsche fans the Carrera GT never raced! It never really proved itself. Racing has always proven the Porsche concept of being fully developed and fully road worthy. The 918, it seems, came from combining the development of all the racing and road going Porsches and then applying those ideas to the maximum. While I am well versed in the aircooled 911s, 917s and their history, I see another parallel of the new 918 with the 917. The 918, like the 917, borrowed many technologies from the road going 356-911s. The evolution of the “evergreen 911” (1965-2013) has now led to transference of the known into the magical cross over with the application of the ‘What-ifs. This technology will also give future production Porsches reliable, cost effective, performance; undreamed of when the 917 was crossing the finish lines first. The 918, like all Porsches, has it’s own style. That is one of looking almost perfect -but not 100%. Ferry Porsche commented on style many years ago saying something like, “if you make a perfect design for today it will look old and obsolete in a while.”

NOVEMBER 2012

Porsche-918-RSR-Hybrid-Race-Car

I have never seen a 356 that looks old. Neither have I seen a 901- 911930- 964- 993 996- or 997 that looks old either. And matter of fact, neither does a 944-968- 928 either. The 2000 and later cars haven’t been around long enough to consider, but I bet they to will have their own look too - but never look old. The 918 seems to fit the Porsche thinking of forum and function. The lessons learned from the 917 are well known and Porsche has applied this to the 918. With Porsche’s experience, finances, and technical means to develop a great machine that not only works but wins races, the stage is set for the most contested race in the world; The Grand prix of Endurance, the 24 hours of Le Mans! Seeing what the 918 creators have done so far to date, it reminds me of another time-long ago. Much like what we witnessed from the London Auto Show in 1969. There, the surprise unveiling of the (then) new Porsche 917 blew everyone away! Porsche was demonstrating their intention to compete for FIRST PLACE Overall, and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans out right! That was dramatic and exciting. So, I now feel confident telling those of you, especially those new to Porsche, to enjoy the early stages of the Porsche 918 as you see them come forth and we will all see again a winning machine from – who else: PORSCHE!

The Silver State Classic Story by Keith Clark, “Newbie”

Keith ready to place his number on his 911 in the Nevada sunshine

Several Porches participated

What if it was a beautiful, cool and crisp Sunday morning and what if you owned a fast car, like a Porsche, and what if you had 90 miles of deserted Nevada highway in front of you. What would you do? Yep, that’s just what I thought too. Well if it was the third Sunday in May or September, and you had entered one of the Silver State Classic Challenge’s Open Road Rally Events, you could go down that highway as fast as you want to go... legally! That’s right, no fear of speeding tickets. And because you’re a PCA member; you enjoy meeting new folks who enjoy cars. Add in killer scenery, more cars, driving yours at speed, friendly competition and you have a recipe for a very enjoyable event. Anyone can run in this event. Twice each year, for the past 25 years, the folks at Silver State Classic Challenge, INC., a non-profit organization, have been issued permits by the State of Nevada to close down State Highway 318 between the towns of Lund and Hiko to run this open road event. It is not a race but very much more like a car rally because you’re racing against the clock for that perfect time. The journey covers 90 miles of fenced, two lane, paved highway with long straights, twisties and a few dips along the way, resulting in one of the most memorable times you’ll ever have. It is open to all drivers over 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license and a roadworthy vehicle. The cars are run in classes at five mile per hour increments,

from 95 mph to 180 mph, with the would be great if more Porsches would class determined by the vehicle’s safety participate so we can show those Chevy equipment, the drivers experience level guys that a Porsche team can’t be beat! and the driver/navigator comfort level. I’ve run this event five times now There is also an Unlimited Division and it’s so much fun and challenging for very experienced drivers, over 21 that I keep going back for more. After years of age, with full race-equipped the fifth try, I won the 110 MPH speed cars. Vehicles are started at one-minute class, which is the largest. The winning intervals, beginning with the 150 mph class and working down to the 95 mph class. Once the last 95 mph class vehicle clears the course, the Unlimited Division and the higher speed brackets over 150 are run as the final group. The main event starts promptly at 0800 on Sunday morning with competitors #428 ready for the road! charging down State Route #318 in the Nevada desert looking for a little glory, a few bragging rights, or just a high speed Sunday drive. Everyone gets something different out of this most unique automotive event. There are many teams competing in this event and way too many Corvettes! A few Porsches show Panamara’s prove they have the metal for speed (Continued on Page 30) up and do well, but it

Zone 8 Happenings By Tom Brown Zone 8 Representative I have a favor to ask of you. If you know who the 2009 Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year was, would you please let me know? I’m embarrassed to say there aren’t any zone records of the winner (and it was only 3 years ago!). If it was you, a friend of yours, someone from your region, or if you just happen to remember, please let me know. The award was presented at the January 2010 Zone 8 Banquet. If you can give me some idea of who it was, I’d much appreciate it; it will help me in my attempt to pull together our zone history. At the last California Festival of Speed planning meeting, I was christened the Emperor of Zate (rhymes with eight, as in Zone 8). While I’m all for being emperor, I’m not so sure it will sit very well with my boss, our national president; but it did get me to thinking, what is this Zone Rep thing anyway? How many people really know? So let me tell you. In the early years of PCA, all the region presidents would gather annually to discuss club business. As the years went by and the number of regions grew, this became less and less practical. In 1969, to improve this situation the national Executive Council proposed a concept of administration where the regions of the club were divided into administrative districts, called zones, and were represented by a Zone Representative. This appointed position would directly interact with the regions in their geographic areas in a way that, due to size and distance, the EC could not. Thus the Zone Representative would be a go-between for the regions and the Executive Council; communicating national policy and procedure to the region presidents and the opinions and concerns of the membership back to the national organization. Another way to look at it is that the Zone Rep is here to assist the region presidents and club membership. We are in Zone 8, which contains the 13 regions of Southern California, Southern Nevada and Arizona. So it has been decreed by the Emperor of Zate! Speaking of the Festival, the CFOS management team is hard at work

preparing for the next event (April 5, 6 & 7, 2013; plan on it and save the date!). They asked me to announce that they are looking for a volunteer for a new chair position on the team. This volunteer would be someone who would handle marketing and promotion of the festival. They are looking to attract both more vendors and more automotive enthusiasts every year and they would like some help. If you are looking for a new way to get involved in the Porsche Club and have some experience in this area, please contact me at: zonerep@zone8.org Newsflash for all Time Trial & DE drivers: the Zone 8 website (www.zone8. org) has a new addition-Approved Tech Stations. The list can be found under the “Events” menu item. If your favorite authorized tech station is missing, please let me know and I will be happy to have it added! Moving on to upcoming events, at the tail end of November, be sure to make room on your calendar to attend the PCA member private preview at the LA Autoshow. PCNA will once again be allowing us to get a jump start on seeing the latest and greatest vehicles for 2013. And that same weekend, on December 1st and 2nd, PCA will be bringing our national Tech Tactics program back

NOVEMBER 2012

to the PCNA facility in Ontario. The ultimate tech session, this program puts you together with members of the PCA Tech Committee and the highly trained Porsche mechanics (and maybe a VIP or two from Stuttgart) for a weekend of Q&A and lecture on all things technical about your favorite car, your Porsche! Registration info will be available as we get closer. Save the date and make a weekend of it! Looking forward to next year’s events; our annual Zone 8 Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 19, so save the date as it will be a great evening. This year I’d like to change things up a bit, trying to make it more casual, fun and engaging for all. Entertaining us once again will be Emcee Scott Mann, who will also provide the DJ for dancing. Those of you who went last year know what a great job he did; you may also know him as Mr. KPCA, the voice that brought us the terrific radio station that was broadcasting during this year’s Festival of Speed. Additional new features for the weekend that are in the works are a Zone 8 Concours and car show as well as a driving tour or two. Activities! Awards! Door prizes! Friends and family! Party! Let’s start the New Year right!

2012 OCR PCA Board Election Bio’s Ken Fredrickson, Gary Labb and Monica Asbury are running for a Ken Fredrickson, Gary Labb and Monica Asbury are running for a 2-year term on the OCR Board of Directors. Following are descriptions from our candidates. We hope this will help you get to know them a little bit better. Please vote online when you receive survey monkey ballot in your emailbox. Thank you for your participation in this important election.

GARY LABB

KEN FREDRICKSON I would like to be considered for re-election to the Board of Directors in the capacity of Member at Large. I previously served as Advertising Director for 12 years and have been a club member for 17 years. I have had the experience of participating in all aspects of the club allowing me to learn the responsibilities as defined in the club’s bylaws. I know many members, most of the advertisers and I enjoy meeting and talking to potential new members. If elected I will continue to promote the club, its activities and talking Porsche with the best people on earth.

Hello fellow Porsche enthusiasts. My name is Gary Labb. I bought my first Porsche in 1976 and have enjoyed driving them ever since. I joined PCAOCR in 2009 and started attending board meetings to find out what was going on within PCA-OCR. In 2010 I began posting Facebook event pages for PCA-OCR events on my own Facebook page. In May 2011 I was asked to be the Social Media Chair and created the PCA-OCR Facebook page. Shortly after that I was asked to be the Events Webmaster for the PCA-OCR website. I was honored to be named the 2011 PCA-OCR Male Enthusiast of the Year. I was then asked to take over the PCA-OCR Twitter page. In 2012, I was asked to take over the PCA-OCR Autocross Facebook page. While I’ve continued going to the PCA-OCR board meetings, I’ve seen the importance of being involved in the decision making process for the club. I would like to become a PCA-OCR board member to assist with the continued growth and future development of PCA-OCR. Sincerely, Gary

Monza 2012:

smile: sort of a “Fabio” who might have been a vegetarian or dieter. So, we all loaded up with our newly purchased race shirts and hats and went off to the track. You must understand that for Italy and Italians everywhere Ferrari is not simply a car, racer or not. It is the national psyche, the national obsession and the national love affair. So at Monza a sea of red appears, Ferrari Red, which I capitalize intentionally. They will swoon for the drivers and moan collectively (have you ever heard 100,000 sigh at the same time?) But they will recognize a virtuoso drive, a brave drive, no matter

who is doing it. It just really is better if that virtuoso should be in a red car with the rearing stallion, or a Ferrari. It was not to be. Lewis Hamilton, to prove his qualifying speed from the day before was no fluke, simply ran off into the distance. The equivalent of a “no-hitter” in baseball although done in a racing car. You may miss the thrust and parry for the lead but you can certainly see skill when it is there in such abundance. The young Mexican driver, Perez, who was ironically driving a car with a Ferrari “customer” motor, passed

the Ferrari team to finish second, putting in a beautiful drive. A most unlikely and unexpected outcome, so the top two were stirring displays of what the young can do when given the chance. And Ferrari? Alonzo came from 10th to 3rd in his own performance, outstanding, as we’ve come to expect from him as a usual event. During the race Alonzo was gaining ground upon Massa, who had uncharacteristically out qualified Alonzo. Upon team orders or the difference in speed or something of the combination, Massa moved over to let Alonzo through. It was for me and I am sure some fans an emotional moment as Massa is perhaps in his final season and has never regained the driver that was in him before he was severely injured by a flying wheel nut last year. So, this Monza might have been his best chance at a podium in what many think is his final year at the pinnacle of motor sport. Formula 1 is fast and exciting, but it has the capacity to be cruelly exacting as well. Given another five laps that were not there, it is possible that Perez may have found the speed to pass even Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton said that he had more in him, but that is what every top athlete would say, no doubt. The crowd was happy for Lewis and duly applauded his winning, but I am sure in most hearts there was the thought, please next time let it be a Ferrari! Bravissimo!

Running the course at Monza - more Porsches got a run on the track and is this a Ferrari Formula 1?

time was only .04 seconds from perfect out of 35 cars and fourth best event wide out of 157 cars. Our team score was good enough for second place; but that just means we have to go back in May so we can finish first. Having run this event also means I know all the ropes. I know what to do, what not to, where to stay in Ely, where to eat in Ely, what to plan for and how to win! For more event details, including their rulebook, check out Silver State’s website at http://www. sscc.us/ You can also check YouTube under Silver State Classic Challenge and Nevada Open Road Challenge for several videos about the event. So, if this sounds like another way to enjoy your car at a challenging speed, meet more car folks, and have fun, let’s get a group together and show them Porsches are the best.

Garey and Maxine making us all jealous in Italy

have seen this machine at a few of our OCR events and it is a sweet little ride. In the Preservation class for 1984-1992 911s Michael and Linda Mansolino won. Mike is a long-term OCR member and always participates at our own concours, so we’ve seen the level of preparation he brings to these contests. In Restoration Touring our Joe and Karen Nedza brought home the trophy for 356B/356C machines with their venerable and revered 1963 356B. Once again Joe and Karen are always active with the Orange Coasters and we have seen and enjoyed this little bathtub Porsche for some years. Good for all of you Porsche Polishers!

32

We even had a fellow club member in the Technical and History Quiz: Joe Howard who achieved 70 points in the quiz on Mid 911/930 questions. I’ve seen some of the questions that are asked here and they are detailed. Our past President Nicole Boggs and hubby Cooper were an extremely respectable 4th place in the 2012 gimmick rally. This is not an easy format and for couples that finish and finish well there is a special reward for being able to complete the run with no bickering… we’ll have to ask Cooper and Nicole if they qualified? It is with a very special pride that we should take note of the winners of the “Outstanding PCA Family of the Year”, Bob and Lisa Scheussler. Along with Kris, Becky, Karin, Bekah, Lorri and Morgan Trotter. The Scheusslers have been such an asset to the Orange Coast Region for several years. Bob has been instrumental in bringing our dealer relations to new levels, as well as being the catalyst behind the very useable website we now enjoy. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to attend one, but the Scheussler clan adds about 5 cars and 20 people to every OCR autocross. Okay, that’s an exaggeration but not by much. It is so good to see this award go to them and we should all bask in the reflected glory and be thankful that Bob and Lisa are part of the Orange Coast Region. Next year the Parade is scheduled for June 23rd through the 29th in Traverse City, Michigan. I have been to this area

and it is pretty with some nice Porsche roads. Sounds good to me! Down South Finally, we are more or less moved in. By “less” I mean that there are still some furniture items that Mrs. Cooper deems necessary to complete the new manse. From my perspective, the garage is very cool. It’s a 2X1; with separate two car and one-car bays. Both floors have been epoxy coated and Blanche now sits ensconced waiting for me to get time from the main house chores to get out to her lair and play a bit. Come down and visit us! See you soon and enjoy Thanksgiving with your family folks. And don’t forget to sign up for our Christmas Brunch Cruise! Bound to be a blast!
