pcl case study
Wary Risk Type Sarah is a librarian and has been for a number of years. She chose this profession because she thought it would be a ‘safe’ choice, relatively free from stress. There are jobs she knows she would never do. For example, Sarah would never work abroad, partly because that would, in itself, be too risky for her but also because she doesn’t fly. Sarah describes herself as wary of those in authority and she can be very nervous of people who are in charge. If her boss asks her to do something then she will be at pains to comply but she realises that some of her colleagues take a very different approach and are sometimes more laid back about following orders. Sarah understands that this impacts negatively on her ability to take the initiative; she is much happier when she is given a specific task and is told exactly what to do. The advantage to her at work of being the Wary type is that she will research things fully; if she needs to know things she will investigate thoroughly, and probably more thoroughly than others who come to rely and depend on her as a source of knowledge. In her personal life Sarah is very organised, always punctual for appointments, in fact she is often early for appointments. If she is going on holiday she likes to have planned everything in advance; for example, she will have printed out maps of where they are going, she will have written down phone numbers of restaurants she and her partner might go to, she will have the postcodes of any places or attractions they are likely to visit so she can input them into the satnav, she says she will have ‘sheets and sheets of booking references’, she will have spare batteries for her camera, and she has a very large bag to keep all these things in. Sarah is aware that other people don’t plan their lives in the same way as she does but she feels she would simply be too worried if she didn’t prepare in this way. Other members of her family have gone back into education as mature students but this is something Sarah simply couldn’t contemplate as she much prefers to do things in a certain order i.e. leave home, be a student, get a job, get married, have a family.
