County staff seeks raises

By Jim Ross For The Cabell Standard Late last month, the Cabell County Commission voted to give sheriff’s deputies a $1,000 annual pay increase. Now other officeholders want the same consideration for their employees. On Sept. 11, the commission received a request from alternative sentencing officers for a $1,000 raise. The letter was received and taken under consideration. As the commission did that, Gordon Merry, who heads the county’s emergency services, asked for the same for his department. Commissioner Bob Bailey told him to send the commission a letter with a formal request. At least one other person in the room asked the same. The commission took no formal action. The commission moved quickly through an agenda of mostly routine matters. * Temporarily moved the voting places for precincts 62 and 66 from Culloden Elementary to First Missionary Baptist Church in Culloden. * Agreed to advertise for bids to replace outdates security equipment in the courthouse. Bids are to be opened Oct. 24. * Agreed to employ Jennifer N. Roy, Kayla N. Hensley, Matthew D. Ripley and Tyler S. Sumpter as temporary full-time telecommunicators; Justin L. Becket as See Commission, Page 2

Pumpkin Festival celebrates 29 By Amanda Smythers amanda@theputnamstandard.com

The 29th Annual West Virginia Pumpkin Festival will take place in Milton’s Pumpkin Park Oct. 2-5, celebrating with a theme of “pumpkin patch kids.” The event, which draws thousands to Milton every year, will be bringing in some new entertainment as well as holding on to old traditions, in what could be its best festival yet. “It’s good for family,” said Walter Meadows, pumpkin growing contest coordinator. “Especially

this year. We’re going to have a lot more stuff for children, all free. We hope to make it even better for the children [than in the past].” This year, children will be entertained with acts varying from clowns to superheroes. Every day, there will be two clown shows, superhero visitors from Heroes4Higher, and a DJ with karaoke. Visitors on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday can also witness the Living Statue. Entertainment, however, is not just for the kids. There are a variety of acts for adults to enjoy, including Kala DeHart & Rivertown, a

local band known well to fair-goers around West Virginia and Ohio; Southern Raised, a bluegrass gospel group; and Josh Abbott and the Vandalia Rebellion, a Hurricanebased group that found its following after opening for Matt Stillwell. Additionally, there will be helicopter rides, apple butter making, lye soap making, a chain saw artist and of course the Giant Pumpkin Contest. “We usually have 12 to 15 pumpkins,” Meadows said. “We’ve had one weigh 1,192 pounds, which was supposed to set the state record. This year, someone has al-

ready called me and said they think they’ll break the current record.” More important than the competition, Meadows said, is what happens afterward. “We auction them on Sunday at 4 p.m.,” he said. “The proceeds benefit our scholarship fund.” This year, the Pumpkin Festival gave out three $2,000 scholarships after receiving over 450 applications from high school students across the state. The winners are Autumn Jones, of Sissonvillle High School, Brandon LaFauci, of Scott See Pumpkin, Page 3

Cabell Midland Knights take shield back to Huntington By Michael Circle michael@theputnamstandard.com

Cabell Midland got their revenge against Huntington with a 31-26 win that brought the prized “Shield” back to Ona. The undefeated Highlanders, on their trek to the state championship game, won the Battle for the Shield last year, but the Knights had no intention of letting them keep it. “It’s a big momentum push going into week five,” senior quarterback Coy Petitt said. “It will build

a strong confidence, but we can’t get cocky.” Petitt threw for 107 yards completing five of six passes which backed the team’s dynamic rushing game. “We threw when we needed to,” Petitt said. “I made my necessary throws, but we know when we need to run it or go to the air.” And run it they did. With 271 rushing yards spread out over five ball carriers, the Knights kept to the ground game for most of the night, a style of play not unusual for this

quick offense. “Anytime the battle got tough, they fought,” said head coach Luke Salmons. “They got behind the eight ball a few times, and in that situation, they stood up and fought the battle to get to 4-0.” See Football, Page 16 Quarterback Coy Petitt (12) runs the ball while Caperton Humphrey (36) and Jacob Hendricks (1) are ready to block. Merrit House Alpaca Farm in Barboursville will open its doors to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

Alpaca Farm Day on Sept. 27 Merrit House Alpaca Farm in Barboursville is celebrating National Alpaca Farm Day by opening their doors to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. An annual tradition every fall, National Alpaca Farm Day allows families to see firsthand the dayto-day operations of the Merrit House Alpaca Farm and meet the furry, loveable creatures known as the “World’s Finest Livestock.” Last year, the farm day was a huge success with over 200 people attending. Merritt House Farm is located on Wildcat Rd. in Barboursville and is a small, family-run farm owned and operated by Chip and Julie Merritt. Its mission is to breed and raise only the best high-end Huacaya alpacas with the best genetics possible. By breeding for perfection in all colors, they produce Huacaya alpacas of sound conformation and beautiful temperaments, as well as fine, dense,

lustrous fleece in a wide range of natural colors. Since last farm day, Merrit House has had two color champions and multiple blue ribbon winners in the show ring. The dream started in August 2006 when the Merrits purchased an 80 acre old farm they had fallen in love with. The farm is only 15 minutes from the mall but seems isolated, making the views spectacular. Although the hay fields on the farm had been maintained, the pastures had not, requiring the cleaning and clearing of brush to restore the farm to its full potential. After a couple years and spending more and more time at the farm, the Merrits sold their house and built a new house on the farm. During construction, the neighbors called it the Merritt House and the name stuck, hence the farm name. The Merrits welcome the community to visit their farm, which they consider to be “Small Farm Friendly with Big Farm Bloodlines.” For assistance call 304-633-2533.

Saturday, Oct. 4 5 and 6:30 p.m. Josh Abbott and The Vandalia Rebellion Josh Abbott hails from Hurricane and his band has graced local stages many times this year with their country charm. Members include Josh Abbott - Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals, Adam Runion – Lead Guitar, Bill Robinson – Pedal Steel, Josh Lightner – Drums, Sam Delauter – Bass Guitar. Most recently he opened for Matt Stillwell and draws a rather large following wherever he goes. Sunday, Oct. 6 1 and 3 p.m. Marguerite Abigail Reynolds and Josiah Spangler formed Marguerite in the summer of 2011 with the intention of creating real, original music. After writing their first song, Misery, the songs kept coming, and eventually, Marguerite has amassed a repertoire of songs – some tell stories, others convey ideas, and musically, each of them varies from the next. While Marguerite is a duo project, they are often accompanied by other musicians, namely Mark Spangler, who plays mandolin, percussion, additional guitar, and sings harmonies, and Evan Olds, who plays upright bass and percussion.

Cabell Midland boys soccer falls to Nitro 1-0 By Michael Circle michael@theputnamstandard.com

After fighting tooth and nail for 77 minutes before the first goal of the game, Cabell Midland fell to Nitro 1-0 as the first and last goal was made with three minutes remaining. “It was not one of our better games,” said Assistant Coach Jack DeFazio. “Of course you have to give a lot of credit to Nitro. They worked the ball well.” When head coach Tyler Ellis could not be at the Sept. 18 game due to illness, DeFazio stepped into the role to try to bring the Knights to a victory, but after two grueling halves, the Knights could not pull the trigger on a game-ending goal. “We were struggling with our touch and a lot of balls were in the air when they should have been on the ground,” DeFazio said. “We got a little selfish in the attacking third of the field. The effort was there and the energy was there, but we gave up a silly goal in the end of the game. We can’t take anything away from Nitro, though. They did well.” Nitro and Cabell Midland fought for control of the ball at midfield for the majority of the game with few shots on either goal. The foot

race between midfielders kept the ball inside as both goaltenders watched helplessly. Finally, after 77 minutes of play, Nitro found the back of the net, whisking one past Midland keeper Alex Bock underneath his faceplanter dive. “I feel like I played well but I could have been a little more physical,” said senior midfielder Ben Foster. “We just didn’t capitalize on some of the chances we had and even when we did, they didn’t go the way we wanted them.” After aggravating a formerly injured ankle in the previous Saturday match against Woodrow Wilson, senior outside midfielder Andrew Hogue considered his performance against Nitro to be sub-par. “I definitely didn’t play as well as I could have,” he said. “My left ankle is still bothering me so I didn’t play at full capacity. On the field, we didn’t start our best. After a while, we started stringing some passes together and found a flow but lack of energy was our downfall. We’ll be back.” The Knights took seven shots on goal in their Sept. 18 match, but Nitro’s keeper was there for all of them.

Hogue took a shot that would have fit perfectly into the top right corner of the net frame but Nitro was there to grab it. “We had an average performance,” senior Jimmy Smith said. “We could do better or worse. There are some things to clean up but we’ll get there.” Even though the Knights suffered a heart breaking, last-minute loss to the Wildcats, the team still holds a strong team bond, Foster said.

“Our passing game was decent considering the cornerbacks for the Highlanders,” he said. “They are the best corners we’ve seen so far this season. I think, though, if we calm down and remind ourselves of the basics from the spring, we will be fine this year.” Midland started the game with a 3-and-out drive. The Highlanders then took the ball only 1 yard from the original line of scrimmage despite driving the ball to the Knights’ 28. A fumbled snap and a personal foul took Huntington back to their own 47-yard-line on a second-and-29. The next play was to the air and picked off by Midland’s Tre Martin. “Our guys showed resilience,” Salmons said. “They battled and never trailed. They got pushed and they responded.” After a scoreless first quarter, the Knights picked their game up and carried it into the end zone twice in the second. The third quarter came to an end with a Highlander touchdown and a Midland field goal, bringing Huntington to within four points of their rival Knights. It was the fourth quarter that had fans on both sides on their feet and people in the press box unable to see the field. Midland began the fourth with a 90-yard scoring drive and ten minutes left in the game. Childers rushed for 74 of those yards and Petitt capped the drive off with a 2-yard rush to the end zone.

Taking another two minutes off the clock, the Knights took the ball back to the end zone after the onside kick, bringing the score to 31-19. Huntington’s special teams returned the kickoff to midfield, and two minutes and 52 yards later, the Highlanders came back to within five points on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Huntington opened the final drive of the game with an onside kick recovery and fans leapt to their feet, cheering and yelling Midland running back Alexander Childers (24) plows through for the Midland defense to make Huntington defense. Jimmy Smith (20) makes an aggressive move for the ball after kicking it away from his defensive zone. John Kuhn (9) circles around behind him to play backup. “I saw some good passes towards the end,” he said. “I saw some good play there and we have great chemistry together. As the season progresses, we’re going to get better and eventually get out of sectionals. We played solid, we just couldn’t capitalize.” Midland players said they have a plan for the games after Nitro, which included a 3-0 loss to Winfield. Hogue said he would come out harder and bring more aggressive

We will work on shots and get some serious rest.” “We don’t fear anyone and we will come out and take the win,” Smith said.

Football From Page 1 Senior running back Alex Childers was the top rusher in the game with 150 yards on 34 carries. Scoring three of the Knights’ four touchdowns, Childers proved, yet again, his capacity for rushing and his desire to win. “I like to first thank my line,” Childers said. “They did some great blocking. We’re all good friends and I am confident they will do their jobs so I will make sure they’re confident I will do mine.” Childers gave credit where credit was due and his linemen were not the only ones that earned his affection. “The fans were great tonight,” he said. “They were such big a help to us.” Reese Donahue played the role of star receiver on the night, catching one of Petitt’s few passes for a 40-yard gain, an important reception for a scoring drive that propelled the Knights to the win. His defensive play was even stronger, getting to the ball carrier six times and sacking the Highlander quarterback once for a loss of 3 yards on the play. “Our defense did well tonight,” Donahue said. “I thought we all did a great job getting to the ball. As a team, we all did great. I can’t do it by myself, but we can do it when we work together as a team and we did that tonight.” Seth Vickers, a receiver and outside linebacker for Midland, said the receiving game was respectable taking into account Huntington’s corners.
