MILTON - Ashton Ernst is making it big in music. The 23-year-old country music singer is a household name in the state. For more than 10 years, she’s wowed crowds at the Pumpkin Festival. Now, she’s taking her talents to the home of country music: Nashville, Tennessee. “Music is and has always been my passion,” said Ernst. “Country music is in my blood.” The nationally-known musician got inspired at a young age while watching her father play drums and sing professionally. Parents built a small studio in their house for Ernst to practice.

The love and drive for music stardom blossomed from there. After high school, the young woman began singing on local radio stations and performing in honky-tonks throughout Nashville. Recently, she signed to an independent label. Ernst’s style is undeniably country. Her vocals flow like the West Virginia streams and creeks where she once lived. The music is upbeat and catchy. Ernst dreams of one day performing with her favorite country superstars and singing at the famous Grand Ol’ Opry. “I will never stop pursuing my ultimate dream of performing on the Grand Ol’ Opry,” she said.

Manchin Welcomes West Virginia Veterans to Washington West Virginia’s third “Always Free Honor Flight” brings 31 veterans of World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars to D.C. Manchin hosts a welcome reception for veterans to honor their service WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) proudly welcomed 31 veterans from West Virginia to the nation’s capital for the state’s third “Always Free Honor Flight” in less than a year. The veterans visited the capital free of cost to see the memorials built in their honor. Eleven served in World War II, one in World War II and Korea, 10 in Korea, one in Korea and Vietnam, four in Vietnam, and two in all three wars. Two other veterans served as escorts for the group, along with three high school ROTC cadets. “It is such an honor to welcome these brave servicemen to Washington today,” Senator Manchin said. “West Virginia is one of the most patriotic states in this great nation, and we will continue to honor the growing number of veterans and active duty members who have served our great country with valor and distinction. Showing our appreciation to the men and women who have served this nation is something we should do each and every day. But today is a special day for us to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation.” The Honor Flight Network is a nationwide effort to ensure veterans have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. to see the monuments that were built to honor their service. The veterans will tour the Capitol, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam War Memorial. The “Always Free Honor Flight” was established in West Virginia thanks to the Denver Foundation and Little Buddy

In part, Senator Manchin wrote in the Congressional Record Statement: “I am filled with so much pride every time I meet our military veterans who come to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials built to honor them and to commemorate the wars in which they served so courageously. “Today, 31 veterans from West Virginia, representing three generations of warriors, are here to see the memorials that commemorate their sacrifice and valor and for a special ceremony honoring World War II veterans. “And on the occasion of their visit, I want to express my deepest gratitude to these special men who helped keep America free and made the world safer for liberty-loving people across our country and beyond our borders.”

Southwestern Bean Bake Ingredients: 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained, rinsed 1 can (15 to 16 oz) great northern beans, drained, rinsed 1 can (14.5 oz) stewed tomatoes, undrained 1/2 cup Thick 'n Chunky salsa 1/4 cup ketchup 1 1/2 cups Original Bisquick® mix 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal 2/3 cup milk 1 tablespoon butter or margarine, softened 4 medium green onions, sliced (1/4 cup)

Directions: Heat oven to 425°F. In 2-quart saucepan, heat beans, tomatoes, salsa and ketchup to boiling, stirring occasionally; remove from heat. Pour into ungreased 2-quart casserole. In medium bowl, stir remaining ingredients until soft dough forms; beat 20 strokes. Drop dough by spoonfuls onto bean mixture; spread to edge of casserole. Bake uncovered 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
By Mary Jane “MEMORIAL DAY” Thought for the week: Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15; 13 (KJV) Decoration Day is the day set aside for people to go visit their loved ones gravesite, and remember them by placing flowers on their graves. In earlier days, you picked what fresh flowers you had blooming in your yard, or you made flowers from what was called crepe paper. Some people were very creative at this - after making the flower and attaching a stem, it was dipped in wax to stiffen, this was before the silk, and plastic flowers were created. It was a day families and friends gathered. Most of the day was spent at the cemeteries, hav-
ing picnic lunch, and meeting with friends and family. It originated after the Civil War, to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers, who had died in the war. Then it was extended to honor all Americans, who gave their life in wars, becoming a national holiday in 1971, to be observed as Memorial Day on the last Monday of May, marking the beginning of the summer season. Now, it runs into a three day weekend, of various parades, and family holiday activities. Our President gives a speech, while placing a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C., the biggest car race in the nation –The Indianapolis 500 runs every Memorial Day.

The words are: Day is done, gone the sun, from the hills, from the lakes, from the skies, all is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Taps was originally played at night in the military branches, to remind those in the bunkers, time for lights out. A day of honor, set aside to remember and think, of all our loved ones, who have gone on. Psalm 33:12 - Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. Prayer: God, our Father, May we always honor you. Amen.

A senior at Cabell Midland HS, with a 4.1 GPA, Tiffani is a member of the National Honor Society 4 years. State Tax Credits Available from Prestera Foundation HUNTINGTON, WV - Prestera Foundation for Behavioral Health Services, Inc. announces an additional allocation of tax credits for this year through the Neighborhood Investment Program (NIP) from the State of West Virginia. This is the first time Prestera Foundation’s request for additional tax credits has been awarded. These additional tax credits must be distributed by June 30, 2013. Donors who contribute a minimum of $500 to the Prestera Foundation are eligible to receive up to 50% of their donation in tax credits to reduce liability
for the Corporate Net Income Tax, Business Franchise Tax, or the Personal Income Tax. The total cost of the contribution may be lowered even further when used in conjunction with federal tax deductions for giving to charity. “This program allows donors to stretch the value of their charitable dollars while ensuring the longevity of high quality behavioral health services available to West Virginians,” reports Prestera’s Development Associate, Traci Fricke. Donations ensure Prestera Center’s longevity of high quality behavioral health
services regardless of ability to pay. While a tax deduction reduces the amount of total income on which taxes are based, a tax credit is used to reduce total tax liability. Generally, a tax credit is worth substantially more than a tax deduction. HMA to welcome Robert Briscoe as Walter Gropius Master Artist The Huntington Museum of Art will welcome Robert Briscoe as a Walter Gropius Master Artist in May. Briscoe will speak about his work in ceramics at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013. Admission to this public presentation is free. He apprenticed with functional potter James Vandergriff in Zarah, Kansas (1967-68) and later received a Bachelor of Science in economics from Kansas State

Briscoe was a founding member of the Upper St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour – now an annual destination for collectors nationwide – and remains one of the event’s principal organizers. He has received awards, including a McKnight Artist Fellowship (2001 and 2007) and a grant from the Jerome Foundation (1987). Briscoe has lectured and conducted ceramics workshops across the country. His work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly, American Craft, and The Art of Contemporary Pottery. He is represented in public collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery (Washington, D.C.); the Weisman Art Museum, University of Minnesota (Minneapolis); Arizona State University Art Museum (Tempe), and
numerous private collections around the world. He lives and works on 31 acres of woods and fields in Harris, Minnesota. The Walter Gropius Master Artist Series is funded through the generosity of the Estate of Roxanna Y. Booth, who wished to assist in the development of an art education program in accordance with the proposals of Walter Gropius, who designed the Museum’s Gropius Addition as well as the Gropius Studios. Velma’s View By Velma Kitchens George Jones George Jones passed away last week and his funeral service was today. We were saddened by this as I have known George Jones all my life. I remember when I was young; the radio station was always on a country music station. I listened to George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Barbara Mandrell, Donna Fargo, Jean Shepard, Jeannie Pruitt, Gene Watson, Larry Gatlin, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, June Carter, Bill Anderson, Dottie West, Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, Bobby Bare, Mel Tillis, Hank Locklin, Ray Price, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Reba, Connie Smith, Don Williams, Marty Robbins, and a host of other old timers. Now country is yelling and screaming and dancing and jerking and shaking and carrying on and not so country sounding. I don’t listen to country music now, but growing up I listened every day and learned a lot. I would listen to WSM in Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry. I had to wait until all the other little stations went off the air to hear the big stations - but I loved listening in. I learned a lot about the lives of the old time country people and how they worked really hard and enjoyed being allowed to sing. Most of the old timers were not stuck up like some of the new fangled people are. And I forgot to mention Roger Miller. He was so funny and talented. George Jones is and was the greatest country music legend of all time… anyone in country music would say the same.

Community News The Cabell Standard Manchin launches 5th Kalyn Bordman crowned ‘Commonsense Connections’ Week Miss West Virginia Manchin staff will make nearly 100 stops, visiting every county in one week WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) is pleased to announce that his office will launch its fifth “Commonsense Connections” Week beginning Monday, May 20. Representatives from Senator Manchin’s office will make more than 95 stops across West Virginia – traveling to all 55 counties – to meet with constituents, hear their commonsense priorities and concerns, and gather their feedback. “Bringing the government directly to our citizens and knowing their concerns and ideas have always been top priorities for me as a former governor and now as U.S. Senator,” Senator Manchin said. “West Virginians should have ac-

WVU Press publishes a history of sports in West Virginia MORGANTOWN, WV - West Virginia University Press has published a history of sports in the state called Hillside Fields: A History of Sports in West Virginia by Bob Barnett. West Virginia’s championship teams at WVU and Marshall University and athletic superstars like Jerry West and Mary Lou Retton are familiar to all, but few know the full, untold story of sports in the Mountain State. Hillside Fields: A History of Sports in West Virginia chronicles the famous athletic triumphs and heart-breaking losses of local heroes and legendary teams, recording the Titanic struggles of a small state competing alongside larger rivals. Hillside Fields provides a broad view of the development of
sports in West Virginia, from one of the first golf clubs in America at Oakhurst Links to the Greenbrier Classic; from the first girls basketball championship in 1919 to post Title IX; from racially segregated sports to integrated teams; and from the days when West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins beat the big boys in football to the championship teams at WVU, Marshall, West Virginia State and West Liberty. Kalyn Bordman, 18, of Barboursville was recently crowned Miss West Virginia International 2013 at the pageant held on Saturday May 4th in Beckley WV. Kalyn is a Sophomore at Marshall University majoring in Broadcast Journalism. In July, Kalyn will compete in Chicago for the title of Miss International against more than 70 young women from around the world. Kalyn’s platform is Organ donation and she works closely with CORE of WV to help educate people throughout the state.

State Higher Education System announces Research Mini-grants CHARLESTON, WV - Six faculty members at West Virginia public universities have received ‘mini-grants’ from the state to assist in preparing proposals with the goal of obtaining much larger research funding awards. The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Division of Science and Research announced Research Proposal Mini-Grants of $5,000 each to faculty at Concord Uni-
versity, Marshall University, West Virginia University, and West Virginia University Institute of Technology. The mini-grants provide replacement salary for an uninterrupted period of time for a faculty member to write research or research equipment proposals during the summer. Each winning faculty member agrees to submit a proposal for funding from an external agency or foundation as a re-
sult of obtaining the minigrant. The Research Proposal MiniGrants were awarded to: • Joseph Allen, Concord University; • Vagner Benedito, West Virginia University; • Deborah Chun, West Virginia University Institute of Technology; • Rosalyn Quinones, Marshall University; • John Rakus, Marshall Uni-
versity; and • Kaushlendra Singh, West Virginia University. Dr. Jan Taylor, the Commission’s Director of Research Programs, said “The Mini-Grant Program is an investment in research, education, and ultimately, in economic development. By allowing these faculty members the opportunity to concentrate on external research proposals, the State of West Virginia ultimately
may realize benefits well beyond its $30,000 investment.” The Research Proposal MiniGrants are funded by the West Virginia Research Challenge Fund, which lays the foundation for many of the state’s competitive grant programs. Rahall: Resources for Small Business can help grow the economy HUNTINGTON, WV - At a symposium at Marshall University on Tuesday, April 30, U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV ) brought together small business owners and entrepreneurs to help them learn more about available Federal resources that can spur job creation and innovation in southern West Virginia. “Especially in this tough economy, increasing access to affordable credit and technical assistance for our small business owners and entrepreneurs can pay handsome dividends for our communities. We can create
jobs and grow the economy by fostering public-private partnerships and taking full advantage of the Federal resources available, and I am actively working to do so,” said Rahall. Rahall invited representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and USDA Rural Development, as well as the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing, TechConnect, and the Natural Capital Investment Fund, to participate in the Huntington symposium. Cabell Midland Future Business Leader moves on to National Competition Cabell Midland High School's Future Business Leaders of America Club competed at the FBLA State Leadership Conference April 8 & 9 in Charleston. In addition to competitions, the students had the opportunity to hear from leading entrepreneurs in the state and attend various workshops regarding current business issues. Cabell Midland is very proud to announce that Nathanial Barker, a senior, won the First Place award for the Accounting II division. Nathanial has now earned
the honor of representing Cabell County and the state of West Virginia in the FBLA National Leadership Conference, held in Anaheim CA, June 27-30. This is not Nathanial's first time representing Cabell Midland's FBLA at the national level. Last year as a junior, Nathanial placed third in the state for the Accounting I division. As a result, he traveled with his adviser, Kristye Shaffer, to San Antonio, TX to represent West Virginia in the national competition.
"I am extremely proud of Nathanial and his accomplishments. I believe that he has a very bright and promising future ahead of him. I feel certain that he will be successful in any career that he may choose," said Kristye Shaffer, FBLA Adviser and Business Education Teacher. West Virginia Dance Festival Draws Students from Across the State CHARLESTON, WV - Dance students from 45 dance school, high school and college programs participated in the 2013 West Virginia Division of Culture and History Dance Festival at the Culture Center at the State Capitol Complex on April 19 – 21. Rahall Attends 32nd Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, Honors Families of WV State Troopers WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) attended the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, May 15 to honor law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. West Virginia State Police Trooper Eric Michael Workman and Corporal Marshall Lee Bailey, who were killed in the line of duty last August, were recognized in the ceremony. “Every 57 hours in this country, law enforcement officers lay down their lives so that the rest of us can enjoy lives enriched by the very safety and security our officers provide,” said Rahall. “We must never forget those who put themselves in harm’s way to preserve and protect our safety, and how indebted we are to their families for the many days and hours
they sacrifice so their loved ones might serve our communities, our State, and our Nation.”

Bailey and presented them with flags flown over the U.S. Capitol to honor their sacrifice.

A lot has changed in 150 years

A lot has changed since West Virginia became a state 150 years ago. The change, however, started much earlier. The animals the first explorers and settlers saw and killed in West Virginia seem almost unbelievable today. Wolves roamed our mountains.
Bison, mountain lions and elk were also prominent. By the time West Virginia became a state in 1863, all of these animals had been wiped out. Only within the last 30 years has the coyote moved in to serve the predator role left vacant by the wolf. It's hard to imagine West Virginia's scenic beauty without its iconic wildlife, such as whitetailed deer and turkey. Many of the state's majestic creatures have been gone so long, they live on only in the names of places – Wolf Island on the Elk River, Buffalo in Putnam County, Elkview in Kanawha County, the Elk River, etc. Just a couple of centuries ago, people would likely have had just as much difficulty imagining the land that has become our state without its largest animals - the bison and elk. The last recorded bison killed was in 1825 near Valley Head in Randolph County, but the bison was long-gone from its primary range in the Ohio and Kanawha valleys long before that.
Our most reliable and detailed account of the bison extirpation in West Virginia comes from an unexpected source – George Washington. Washington traveled in the Ohio Valley during a 1770 trip and left us a detailed diary of what he saw and like an investigative reporter, he asked questions from everyone he met. While camping at the mouth of Lee Creek in Wood County – I think this would have been on Dexter and Cyril Graham's farm in Belleville – Washington ran into an old war buddy, an Indian with whom he served during the French and Indian War. As they talked about old times, they dined on the Indian's bison meat. Washington's diary indicates that the bison had just recently disappeared from the Ohio Valley. He notes old bison trails, but he saw no bison on the Ohio River on a round trip from present-day Pittsburgh to Point Pleasant. Indians frequently told him of places where herds of bison used to be. Stocked waters include: Anawalt Lake, (McDowell) Barboursville Lake (Cabell), Berwind Lake (McDowell), Cacapon State Park Lake (Morgan), Cedar Creek State Park Lake (Gilmer), Chief Logan State Park Lake (Logan), Conaway Run Lake (Tyler), Edwards Run Pond (Hampshire), Fort Ashby Lake (Mineral), French Creek Pond (Upshur), Handley Pond (Pocahontas), Hurricane Lake (Putnam), Indian Rock Lake (Nicholas), Krodel Lake (Mason), Laurel Lake (Mingo), Little Beaver State Park Lake (Raleigh), Mason Lake (Monongalia), Mountwood Lake (Wood), North Bend State Park Pond (Ritchie), Pendleton Lake (Tucker), Pipestem State Park Lake (Summers), Poorhouse Pond (Berkeley), Teter Creek Lake (Barbour), Tomlinson Run State Park Lake (Hancock), Turkey Run Lake ( Jackson), Wallback Lake (Clay), Watoga State Park Lake (Pocahontas), and Wirt County Farm Pond (Wirt). Among those are 400 tagged channel catfish stocked into five state park lakes, including: Cacapon State Park Lake, Cedar
Creek State Park Lake, Chief Logan State Park Lake, Pipestem State Park Lake, and Tomlinson Run State Park Lake. Anglers who catch a tagged fish are asked to return the tag or the tag number along with information on the date of capture, if the fish was kept or released, and the name and address of the angler to WVDNR, 2311 Ohio Ave, Parkersburg, WV 26101. Anglers also can call in the information (304-420-4550) or provide the information via email to dnrfishtags@wv.gov. There is usually a free gift for mailing back the tag. I think years ago, there was a hat. My son caught one of these catfish a few years back at Mountwood Park Lake and he got a pair of line clippers. I have never caught a single tagged fish in my life, but my son wound up with two tags one summer. A few weeks after he caught that tagged fish, we were canoeing at Mountwood and saw a dead catfish floating along and said “Hey Dad, let's go check out that dead catfish to see if it has a tag in it!” I explained to him that tagged fish were rare, I'd been fishing for 30 years and never caught one, etc. But, we paddled over to the dead catfish. Naturally, it had a tag in it. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources needs help in
locating whip-poor-wills. If you see or hear whip-poorwills in West Virginia between May 10 and July 31, please email DNR Wildlife Resources Section biologist Rich Bailey at richard.s.bailey@wv.gov. Include the date and location, being very specific; where you saw or heard the bird; your name and phone number; and whether you saw or heard the bird. The whip-poor-will is a gray, black and brown bird with a black throat. It is well-camouflaged and is easier to hear than see. Its namesake song is a loud, rhythmic “whip-poor-will” which it sings repeatedly at night. “Recent Breeding Bird Survey data indicate significant population declines of this bird in nearby states, and your observations will enable us to get a better sense of their population status in West Virginia,” Bailey said. The DNR is also interested in discovering locations of barn owls and bald eagle nests. Please email Bailey if you see or hear either of these species with the same information as for the whip-poor-will. Barn owls have a distinctive white, heartshaped face and a variety of unique calls including clicks, hisses, grunts and screams.
counter any bison himself until he traveled several miles up the Kanawha River (Indians told him bison could still be found there). He and his party shot several of them for food. The bison was the first to go, elk and wolves suffered similar fates – although they would inhabit the state for another century. Recently, however, the elk have returned thanks to wanders from Kentucky's elk-reintroduction efforts near the West Virginia border. So have the canine predators, with what is believed to be a natural migration of coyotes to fill the void left by the extirpated wolf. Game animals started seeing protection in the late 19th Century, not long after statehood. In 1897, what is now the Division of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Section was established to enforce game laws. It's one of the nation's oldest statewide police agencies. In the early 1900s, the agency that would become the Division of Natural Resources worked to
restore the deer and turkey populations. Its employees trapped these animals in the Eastern Panhandle and released them throughout the state where the populations had been eliminated. The first official West Virginia hunting season was in 1923, and limited to the eastern part of the state. A total of 60 bucks were harvested statewide, 34 of which were bagged in Pocahontas County. The next deer season was in 1927 and about 160 deer were harvested. Early records are spotty and no harvest records have survived for many of the years in the 1920s and 1930s, although in some of those years, all seasons were closed. Beech Fork State Park offers Online Campground Reservations Beech Fork State Park campground has 275 sites, and many of them may now be reserved online. The online reservation service began March 15 and has proved to be popular with campers who want to plan their vacations well in advance. “With the arrival of camping season, the park population can go from a few dozen park guests to several hundreds of people,” said Matt Yeager, Beech Fork state park superintendent. “Camping and the opportunity to be outdoors is an appealing vacation or getaway for many. “The campground rental guidelines haven’t changed,” Yeager said. “This new service gives campers an ‘any time of the day’ option to make campsite reservations for Memorial to Labor Day weekend dates – online.” Advance reservations may be made for sites 1-136 at Old Orchard and Moxley Branch campgrounds. The other sites remain first-come, first-served options. To make a reservation, visit www.beechforksp.com and click on the reservation button. There is a two-night minimum for advance reservations and reservations must be made at least two days in advance. Old Orchard is a 49-site, full hookup campground and is equipped with water, sewer and 20-, 30-, or 50-amp electric service. Old Orchard is open yearround; sites are numbered 1-49. Moxley Branch, Four Coves, and
Lakeview camping areas each are equipped with 20- or 30-amp electric service. Sites at Moxley Branch are numbered 50-99. Four Coves sites are numbered 137-224, and Lake View area sites are numbered 225-275. Each of the four campground areas has full-service bathhouses and restroom facilities, complete with coin-operated laundry. Each campsite contains a grill and picnic table. Playground equipment is part of the campground amenities. Sites along the lake have mooring posts. Reservations are taken for dates the Friday prior to Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day weekend. After Labor Day weekend, all campsite rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis until the next reservation season. Beech Fork State Park also has six vacation cabins that are open year-round for vacations and rentals. The park offers recreation options that include an outdoor swimming pool open in the summer months, picnic shelter rentals, hiking, hand-dipped ice cream served in the Camper Store, and floatation rentals for lake use: canoes, kayaks, jon boats and paddle boats. ELOISE FIZER HENDERSON Eloise Fizer Henderson, 94, of Hurricane, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, in St. Mary's Hospital with her family by her side. She was born January 24, 1919, in Putnam County, the daughter of the late James C. and Jennie L. Fizer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Ray Henderson. She was a Christian and Baptist by faith and an 80 year member of Sycamore Missionary Baptist Church. Eloise assisted Dr. Parker for many years, was owner of Eloise Beauty Shop and enjoyed working in her flower garden. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, May 13, at Allen Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Wray officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park. GEORGE N. HODGE George N. Hodge, 71, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., passed away April 21, 2013, in Cape Coral Hospital. He was born on Dec. 10, 1941, in Huntington, a son of N. F. and Asma Bassett Hodge. He was employed at Huntington Alloys. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Wanda J. Thompson Hodge; his daughters, Sheri Beneke and Kim (David) George of Milton, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Blake Beneke and Alec George; his brother John (Phyllis) Hodge; brother-in-law, Joe Peck; nephew, Joseph Peck; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. VERBA HELEN FINLEY MANNING Verba Helen Finley Manning, 92, of Milton, W.Va., passed away May 10, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Milton, W.Va., Cabell County. Verba was a member of the Zoar Baptist Church, Mud River, W.Va. She was formerly an employee of Sovine's Grocery in Culloden, W.Va., for 14 years. Verba was the daughter of the late Charlie and Ollie Deacon Finley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Wilford Manning; son, James Wilford "Jimmy" Manning II; sisters, Josie Finley, Clarie Triplett, Ellie Johnson, and Anna Hall; and brothers, Harold, Arthur, Larry, Glendal and Randall "Winkie" Finley. She is survived by her son, Eddie Manning of Hurricane; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Mary Grantham. JULIA ANN MORRISON "SIS" Julia Ann Morrison "Sis", 72, of Barboursville, went home to be with her Lord on May 13, 2013. She was born May 20, 1940, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Russell and Lottie Jackson Holley. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Julian and Raymond Holley. She is survived by her husband, Guy E. Morrison; three daughters, Jeanette (Lyndon) McColgan of Barboursville, Charlotte (Robbie) Metzger of Waverly, OH, and Margaret (Greg) Kinney of South Point, OH; three sons, Paul (Sally), Guy Roger (Eva), and Mark Morrison all of Kitts Hill, OH; eight grandsons, Stephen, David, and Jacob Morrison, Ryan Nelson, Bradley and Daniel Morrison, Zachary McColgan and Nathan Kinney; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Leona Adkins of Ona, Eva Morrison of Glenwood, and Mary (Gene) Murphy of Huntington; one sister-in-law, Ann Holley of Huntington; one brother, Herman (Marilyn) Holley of Lady Lake, FL. She was a retired nurse at
Mariner Health. She was a Missionary Baptist by Faith. She leaves behind many friends and loved ones. We would like to thank Dr. Haddad and staff at the Cleveland Clinic and also many thanks to Hospice of Huntington and thanks to Dr. Chowdhary and to Dr. Janet Wallace. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and loving sister and aunt to many. And one that touched many hearts and souls. WILLIAM BURL OSBOURN William Burl Osbourn, 85, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord, his loving wife and daughter on May 14, 2013. He was born July 28, 1927, in Fonzo, WV, a son of the late Ernest and Martha Christine Hayes Osbourn. He retired from Columbia Gas Transmission. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Lee Law Osbourn; daughter, Brenda Sue Hunt; brother, Morgan; sisters, Madeline, Josephine, Peg, Connie, Ruth; two sons-in-law, David Welch and David Hunt. He is survived by three daughters, Linda Welch, Peggy (Roger) Given, and Janet Stevens; eight grandchildren, Jane and Brian Welch, Chaney and Chad Given, Christi Nel, Amber Kohler, Ashley Stevens, and Hanna Hunt; six great grandchildren, Noah and Keziah Welch, Isaac and Benjamin Given, Lainey Given and Paisley Hunt; special friend and loved one, Marty Stevens. SUSAN PARSONS Susan Parsons, 82, of Huntington passed away peacefully on May 8, 2013, at Midland Meadows Assisted Living in Ona, W.Va. She was born Hazel Jo Bailey and later nicknamed "Susan" by her grandmother. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Victor Bailey and Blanche Fischbach Bailey of Kenova, W.Va. Susan was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jess; and brothers, Clarence Clifford "Mike" Bailey, Earl Bailey and John Bailey; and a sister, Pauline Thompson. She is survived by a sister, Eleanor Roach; a brother, Larry Bailey; and a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Fred Rodgers, who reside in Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by a daughter, Lynn Hanna and husband John; and sons, Jonathon M. Parsons and wife Melissa, and Jeffrey B. Parsons. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jessica and Scott Duernberger, Nathan Sparks, Amber Hanna, John Matthew Hanna and Kelly Dew; and great-grandchildren, Voss and Odin Duernberger and Thor and Iris Hanna. During her lifetime, she was a lover of all living things. She took in under her care many pets and neighborhood children. Her love of decorating and remodeling led her and Jess to move multiple times while always enjoying the challenge of making a home beautiful. With all her kindness, she could not be misinterpreted as a push-over. She was a strongwilled woman and it was especially apparent when it came to card playing. Her competitiveness made her quite a challenge to defeat at bridge, rummy, cribbage or set back. When alone, she felt comfort in playing Solitaire. Susan will be missed by all that knew her for her beauty both inside and out. The family is so appreciative to Midland Meadows Assisted Living for their compassionate care giving and Hospice of Huntington for helping during her time of need. Chapman's Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements. A family memorial was held on Saturday, May 11th, with the Reverend Hubert Harvey presiding. Donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington. She was also preceded in death by her husband Floyd Elven Spencer, two brothers, Fred and Paul Mohr, and two sisters, Loraine Weatherholt and
Coleen McCallister. She was a retiree of Sears and Robuck Company and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Ona, W.Va. She is survived by two sons, Theadore (Kellie) Spencer of Salt Rock, W.Va., and Timothy (Kayla) Spencer of Ona, W.Va.; two daughters, Floyann (Kent) Sargent of Milton, W.Va., and Paula (Kent) Bias of Ona; four grandchildren, Bradley Spencer, Brook Spencer, Deronica (Butch) Culp and Jeremy Wooten; one greatgrandson, Cody Culp. VADA RUTH BLACK ALFORD TAYLOR Vada Ruth Black Alford Taylor, of Glendale, AZ, died April 5, 2013 in Arizona. Vada was born May 7, 1953 in Milton, WV. Her parents were the late Davey and Alta Black. She graduated from Milton High School. She retired from Montgomery Ward in Denver, Colorado.
Vada was married to William “Bill” Alford for 28 years and later to James Taylor. She is survived by brother Dan McGinnis (Dean) and nephew Troy McGinnis; 2 nieces of Arizona and a very special niece of Arvada, Colorado. She is also survived by ex sisters- and brothers-in-law Eva Holley, Forrest Alford (Stella), Herbert Alford (Reda), and Wendell Alford of WV; Charlene Null of Denver, Colorado.

About Project Hope: Huntington City Mission’s Project Hope is a transitional living facility for families with children who have found themselves
homeless. The center can house 18 families for up to 18 months to allow time for parents to establish a stable home on their own. The center provides food, shelter, clothing, etc., as well as education. In order to qualify for placement with Project Hope, parents must agree to work or attend school and attend life skills and parenting classes. Adults must also submit to and pass random drug tests. The campus is monitored 24/7 by security cameras
and staff. Project Hope accepts people from CPS, local jails, Prestera, local courts, and emergency centers. All resident children are enrolled in school and updated on all required immunizations. Clients are assigned case managers, job coaches, and children’s program managers. The goal of Project Hope is to help homeless families become self-sufficient, productive members of society.

Confirmed Tuberculosis Cases in Cabell County HUNTINGTON – The CabellHuntington Health Department is currently treating and investigating two confirmed TB (Tuberculosis) cases in the Huntington area. The health department and the West Virginia Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE) continue to investigate those individuals who may have had contact with the
confirmed cases. Tuberculosis is a disease that is caused by bacteria that usually attacks the lung but can also attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine and brain. Transmission – TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The TB bacteria are put in the air when a person with active TB disease of the
lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected. TB is not spread by shaking someone’s hand, sharing food or drink, touching bed linens or toilet seats, kissing. Symptoms include a bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer, pain in the chest, cough-
ing blood or sputum, weakness or fatigue, weight loss, no appetite, chills, fever, night sweats. If you have been exposed you will be contacted by a public health official to discuss precautionary steps. For more information on TB please visit www.cabellhealth.org.
