Sunday storms set restoration back 2,126 remain without power in Putnam CHARLESTON -- Appalachian Power’s restoration efforts were on target to reach 95 percent complete by Sunday night, but severe thunderstorms moving through Appalachian’s West Virginia service area instead caused power outage totals to rise. Because of Sunday’s storm, restoration times have been extended. Sunday’s storm marked the fourth major thunderstorm in the company’s West Virginia service area since the June 29 restoration began. The thousands of out-of-state line workers here to restore electric service will remain in the area until all customers are back in service, the company said. In West Virginia, 64,500 of the company’s halfmillion customers are without electric service and those numbers are increasing because of the storms, the company said Sunday night. In Putnam County, 2,126 homes or businesses remained without power as of Sunday night. In Virginia, 7,500 of the company's half-million customers remain without electric service. Customers who experience a new power outage should call to report it to Appalachian Power’s 24hour Customer Solutions Center at (WV) 1-800982-4237 or use AppalachianPower.com. The Putnam Standard STORM FROM PAGE 1 such as hospitals, water and sewer stations are given highest priority. Then, priority is given to outages that will restore the largest number of customers when a repair is made. STORM WEATHER PERSPECTIVE The June 29 storm was part of a massive straight line wind storm that traveled close to 700 miles in 10 hours, devastating 10 states and leaving more than 4.3 million customers without electric service throughout the United States. Company and state officials are characterizing the storm as similar to or even greater than a hurricane, but without advance warning. The storm produced winds in excess of 75 miles-per-hour and heavy rain across a large portion of Appalachian Power's service territory. Hot weather is expected to continue across much of the area affected by the storm. Customers who have electric service are encouraged to consider hosting friends, neighbors and relatives who are without electric service and may need shelter from the heat. CUSTOMER INFORMATION Never touch a downed utility wire, no matter how harmless it looks. It can be difficult to distinguish between a power line and a cable or telephone line. All downed lines should be considered energized and dangerous. And don't touch anything in contact with the line, such as trees, fences or puddles of water, since they can conduct electricity. Keep
WesBanco offers storm damage loan program children and pets away from this potential hazard. Call Appalachian Power to report any downed lines or equipment. If you use a portable or RV generator, do not plug the generator into your circuit box. Portable generators "backfeed" electricity up the line and risk the lives of repair workers and the public. Follow the manufacturers' instructions carefully, and plug essential appliances directly into the generator. See additional information about use of backup generators. Electric consumers are asked to report their outage again if they have not called within the past 24 hours. This will ensure that all consumers' electricity is restored as quickly as possible. Electric consumers who have had power restored are asked to turn on their porch lights so that patrolling service technicians can better spot residences that are still without power in the neighborhood. Residents without power are asked not to stop crew trucks as this will only slow down repairs. Appalachian Power asks for your patience and understanding during the restoration process. In many areas, crews must rebuild significant portions of electric facilities to restore power. Appalachian Power asks customers affected by the power outage, including those who must leave their homes, to turn off all lights and appliances – including heating or air conditioning systems – to prevent circuit overload situations as power is restored to their homes.

Center offers advice on medication affected by storm CHARLESTON – The powerful storms that swept through our area have left many people without power, causing families to stay in hotels and with family and friends. This break in normal routine
can be stressful and inconveniencing, but the aftermath of the storm can also bring many questions: Is My Medication Still Good? Medications need to be stored
under appropriate temperatures and conditions to ensure that they maintain optimum quality standards. However, for medications normally stored at room temperature, brief interruptions in ideal storage conditions will be tolerated. Storing for long periods at high temperatures (over 86oF) or storage for shorter time periods at extreme heat (over 100oF) will, however, cause them to lose effectiveness before the expiration date stamped on the label. For medications that are normally stored in the refrigerator whether or not the medication will still be effective if the refrigerator losespower will depend on the type of medication. You should contact your pharmacist if your medicines were exposed to high temperatures for a prolonged period. Because they will not be effective, do not take any medication that has undergone any change, such as: • a change in color, appearance, or consistency, such as pills
that seem harder or softer than normal, pills that stick together or are cracked or chipped, or ointments or creams that appear to have separated; • a change in odor or development of an unusual or different smell Other Medication Safety Tips Keep all medications in their original containers with labels. Resist the urge to combine medications in one container or bag for easy travel, which can lead to accidental overdoses. Read all medication labels prior to use. If the power is still out, use a flashlight to make sure you can still read the label. According to Dr. Abate, the Director of the West Virginia Center for Drug & Health Information at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, the following are some examples of medications that can place those taking them at risk for serious harm if they are exposed to the heat and do not have adequate fluid intake: Lithium
Antihistamines (found in some allergy medicine and some medicines for colds) Diuretics (“fluid pills”) Amitriptyline, olanzepine, paroxetine Drugs used to treat overactive bladder Amphetamines Poison Prevention and Storm Safety Lamp oil can look like apple juice to a child or an unsuspecting adult. Store in its original container and keep out of children’s reach. Siphoning gasoline and diesel fuel by mouth can result in accidental ingestions and serious injury. Generators emit carbon monoxide and should only be used outdoors. Never bring a generator indoors, not even in a basement. Do not place in an attached garage. Follow the manufacturer’s safety and placement instructions exactly. Keep the West Virginia Poison Center’s number handy for any questions relating to poisonings and the storm. Call our medical experts at 1800-222-1222 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Tomblin authorizes burning ban in West Virginia CHARLESTON - Due to scarce water supplies and the ongoing emergency response efforts related to the recent storms, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has authorized a burning ban, effective immediately and continuing throughout the state of emergency. "West Virginians across the
state continue to clean up yards, homes and communities," said Tomblin. "With our emergency personnel working hard to provide recovery assistance, along with the unusually dry conditions, we must take extra precautions to help prevent accidental fires." The governor's proclamation
authorizes the West Virginia Division of Forestry and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources to issue directives regarding the scope of the burning ban. "State resources are stretched to the limit as emergency personnel work to assist residents with repair and cleanup from
the storm," State Forester Randy Dye said. "People are tired, water supplies are down and some roads are still not accessible. As a result, the Division of Forestry is concerned that outdoor burning at this time could create a hazard." "We are also working to help prevent any unauthorized
burning in wildlife management areas," said Director Frank Jezioro, Division of Natural Resources. For more information visit the Division of Forestry's website at www.wvforestry.com or the Division of Natural Resources' website at www.wvdnr.gov.
