Colorado is not a foreign place to my husband and me. We’ve been there many times before, but it was with either family, for work, or with a couple of friends to hike. There was always good conversation and gorgeous mountains to keep us entertained. But last fall, Tim and I were going with the expressed purpose to be quiet, together.
Care Clusters – pcpc.org/care/care-clusters/
Only once we settled in, did I begin to notice that when the city noise fades, it’s not silent at all! There’s a whole other level, a cacophony, really—creation’s cacophony. Did you know the aspen leaves, which were a crisp gold in the early fall, sound like chimes when the wind blows? Trees, when swaying in the wind, will crackle and pop. Animals call to each other, and brooks really do babble.

And something else—the words on a page will shout at you. We’re taught the Bible is God’s written Word, but the Rocky Mountains have a way of ordering things properly, beginning with creation crying out His praises. The summer before our trip, I had been wrestling with the question, “Who am I if nobody needs me?” It turns out God has an answer for that, and it leapt off the pages of Scripture. I began a list of all the things I am because of Who God is, and it’s an exercise that continues to this day.

It’s always a good idea to begin with God and work your way from there. With no phone, calendar, internet, news, bills (do you feel your blood pressure going up yet?), I discovered what I’ve suspected all along. God speaks to us everywhere, in the city, the mountains, and everywhere in between. But it takes practice to hear Him, to recognize His voice above all the others. Our lives tend to atrophy our listening skills. Attend a “silent” retreat and hear what I mean! —Mona Wilson “From all that I said about our worried, overfilled lives, it is clear that we are usually surrounded by so much noise that it is hard to truly hear our God when He is speaking to us. We have often become deaf, unable to know when God calls us and unable to understand in which direction He calls us… A spiritual life requires discipline, because we need to learn to listen to God, who constantly speaks but whom we seldom hear. When, however, we learn to listen, our lives become obedient lives.” — Making All Things New, Henri Nouwen
