For several years PCPC has partnered with a ministry called Casa del Lago, which works with families in the Bachman Lake area, a community with one of the largest percentages of child poverty in Dallas. Each summer, our youth staff takes a group of middle school students on a week-long local mission trip called Mission Dallas. And each summer, it is an amazing experience for staff and students alike as we extend Christ. This past July, we had thirty students join us in leading elementary school kids from Casa del Lago in games and small group activities at a camp-style environment. It was inspiring to see PCPC middle school students selflessly relate with these children throughout the week. They were creative in the games they planned, and they adapted to the kids’ needs on any given day. Our favorite part of the week was watching the kids listen to the Holy Spirit’s guidance on who to show the love of Christ to that day. All week we talked about having gospel eyes and watching for the children who were by themselves or needed encouragement. Watching students build relationships with these children throughout the week was a joy. On our last day while saying goodbye, the children at Casa told our middle schoolers how much they will miss them. There is just nothing better than that! Our students were struck by the joy of the Casa children despite noticing how few resources they really had. It can be easy for our students to be accustomed to their bubbles of family, school, and church—it is important they gain the perspective that there are great needs in their hometown of Dallas, and missions is not only happening abroad. The week was truly transformational in the lives of our students but was also so encouraging to the youth staff as well. Seeing our group bond with each other was another particularly satisfying fruit of the mission trip. They
helped each other, sacrificed for each other, and encouraged each other throughout the week. How wonderful to see those gospel eyes shift from those they served to those they served with! Then we would end our day of serving with different fellowship activities that allowed time for fun, reflection, and good conversation. True gospel community is a rare treasure, and that week we got to see them experience its sweetness firsthand.

One of our main hopes throughout the week of Mission Dallas was to empower students to serve, whether that is at school, home, church, or with organizations like Casa. We reminded them of 1 Timothy 4:12, which states “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” We talked a lot throughout the week about what servant leadership looks like, and how they can take what they learned throughout the week and apply it in their daily lives going forward. With Jesus as our example of servant leadership, we long to see Mark 10:45 written on their hearts and worked out in their lives: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Our hope and prayer are that our students keep those gospel eyes as they go out into the world and that it does not end at Mission Dallas. —Maggie Hohfeler Middle School Youth Resident
