October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and National Bullying Prevention Preventing Abuse Here are some ways that you can prevent domestic violence: 

Promote domestic violence awareness by becoming aware of domestic-violence statistics and know the signs of abuse.

Speak out against domestic violence. Talking about the seriousness of domestic violence amongst friends, family and other community members also helps to attention and importance to the issue.

Call Military Police if you see or hear evidence of domestic violence, DSN 440-3801; CIV 08821-750-3801

Support a friend or family member who may be in an abusive relationship. Encourage him or her to report the abuse to a Victim Advocate (VA). You may also contact the VA for information. VAs are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week by calling 0162-265-2875 or contact the ACS Family Advocacy Program for more information.

Types of Bullying

Does your partner:  Embarrass you with put-downs?  Look at you or act in ways that scare you?  Control what you do, who you see or talk to or where you go?  Stop you from seeing your friends or family members?  Take your money make you ask for money or refuse to give you money?  Make all of the decisions?  Tell you that you’re a bad parent or threaten to take away or hurt your children?  Prevent you from working or attending school?  Act like the abuse is no big deal, it’s your fault, or even deny doing it?  Destroy your property or threaten your pets?  Intimidate you with weapons?  Shove you, slap you, choke you, or hit you?  Threaten to commit suicide?  Threaten to hurt you? If you answered ‘yes’ to even one of these questions, you may be in an abusive relationship. There are three types of bullying: Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes:  Teasing  Name-calling  Inappropriate sexual comments  Taunting  Threatening to cause harm Social bullying, sometimes referred to as relational bullying, involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes:  Leaving someone out on purpose  Telling other children not to be friends with someone  Spreading rumors about someone  Embarrassing someone in public  Physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions. Physical bullying includes:  Hitting/kicking/pinching  Spitting  Tripping/pushing  Taking or breaking someone’s things  Making mean or rude hand gestures For more information or concerns, contact the Family Advocacy Program at DSN 4403777; CIV 08821-750-3777

Please join the ACS Family Advocacy Program and Community Chapel Thursdays in October for "Safety and Self-Defense" classes! In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, these classes will teach both bystander intervention techniques and safety planning responses for loved ones of a victim of intimate partner abuse. Classes begin on Thursday, 16 October at 17:30 at the Chapel's Fellowship Hall. Dinner and childcare are provided (with dinner served at 1830). Community volunteer opportunities. Volunteer Top Chefs needed! Family&MWR is bringing back their “What’s Cookin’” Series and is looking for volunteers with a flair for cooking to lead these classes. In particular, they are looking for a Grill Master to lead a BBQ class and another with ideas to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in September. SCHOLARSHIPS In June, AER announced the award of 2,744 scholarships under the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for children and 895 scholarships under the Spouse Education Assistance Program, for a total of $8.8 million!
