A POCKET GUIDE TO:
PDCENTRE.CA 902.494.3678 INFO@PDCENTRE.CA Switch: Open Street Sundays is a transformative
event that opens the streets to cyclists, walkers and families, demonstrating how our streets could be used to support a more active, sustainable and fun city. The goal for Switch is launch a pilot event that could inspire long-term interest and commitment to hold the event on a regular basis during the summer months. Similar to the enthusiasm generated around the Oval, Switch has the potential to demonstrate an exciting and successful event that inspires strong public support in HRM.
Goals for Switch: Open Street Sundays
++ Enable people to explore alternative modes of transportation in comfort and safety ++ Demonstrate HRM’s long-term vision for an active transportation network ++ Demonstrate benefits to merchants of making room for other modes of transportation ++ Make physical activity enjoyable & give people a sense of freedom ++ Remove barriers to accessing the peninsula and promote a vibrant downtown ++ Enable & encourage exploration of new parts of the city
Benefits of Switch: Open Street Sundays
++ The promotion of self-propelled activities such as cycling, walking, roller-blading, and jogging for all ages and skill levels ++ An inclusive event that encourages Haligonians to engage in physical activity and to enjoy the streets in a safe environment ++ Opportunity for anyone to try out a new activity in a safe and inviting environment ++ A fun & exciting atmosphere with activities programming and opportunities to support local businesses
Inspiration
Cyclovia Bogotá, Columbia
Open Street Party Halifax, NS
Switch is inspired by a host of hugely successful
open street style events already happening around the world. Bogotá, Columbia is credited with pioneering the open street movement when local community members organized their first Cyclovia (car free streets) event in the 1970’s. Bogotá’s Cyclovia now happens each Sunday when the city opens up 120 km of car free streets to cyclists, pedestrians and all other forms of active transportation. Inspired by Bogotá’s success many communities in Canada and around the world began opening car free streets in their own cities with grassroots organized events.
