What is Intensive Outpatient Treatment? The Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program (IOP) is more intensive than traditional outpatient and is designed to achieve short-term stabilization and resolution of immediate problem areas. The patient and family are offered services by a team of professionals. The patient is enrolled in a time-limited program with other patients working on similar issues. The treatment team may include licensed therapists, nurses, program specialists, and a doctor. The Cal Psychiatric Services IOP has IOP for young adult and adolescent population. The programs are offered Monday through Friday with a minimum of three hours per day. The actual schedule depends on the individual client's needs and insurance benefits. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a short-term outpatient program. Our Transitional Young Adult program referred to as our TYA program is designed specifically for young adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues (dual-diagnosis) between the ages of 18-26 years old. Our New Horizon Program is designed for adolescents between the ages of 12-17 years old patients who are experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties as well as substance abuse

commonly referred to as dual-diagnosis. This program includes a family support group. Often patients in the program do not require (or no longer require) the intense level of psychiatric care provided by inpatient or partial hospitalization programs. IOP is ideal for stabilizing those individuals with a history of frequent relapse. Eligible patients have acute symptoms of depression and/or anxiety and may be at risk for hospitalization, or may be "stepping down" from a hospital stay. Located in a comfortable and relaxed setting, IOP provides intensive treatment among a therapeutic community of peers. Group therapies are used to promote coping skills, stress management, goal achievement and treatment compliance. (Individual therapy, family therapy, and medication management are provided, when indicated.)

Advantages of an IOP • Individual lives at home • Sessions may be conducted while the individual continues to go to work or school • Individual therapy is augmented by group therapies specific to the patient's needs • Multiple professional disciplines work with the patient and family • Frequency of attendance is determined by the individual's specific needs • Specialty programs available All our groups and sessions are geared to treating the underlying causes and help facilitate recovery. Combination of group therapy, individual therapies and closely monitored medication management has been validated by research to be one of the most effective forms of treatment mental disorders.
