Keeping It Real Our little baby will be “2” this month! I can hardly believe it. It seems like just yesterday that I finished up that August 08 issue of the Breeze, went into labor, had a baby, and was back working on the September issue without missing a beat. (There’s not much that people can tell me as a reason why they can’t get their work done on time...☺) I guess that’s why Jennifer Beale’s story this month, on page 10, got me thinking about how Shannon and I have been married for 15 years and it’s been just us for so long being able to do whatever we want at any time, and now we answer to a 2 year old! But yet I don’t know how I ever lived without her. She has changed our lives completely, and now this is my new “normal” life. I want to apologize for an error in last’s month issue, Michael Sullivan, not Jennifer Beale, wrote the story “RUMINATIONS.” I apologize for this mix up. We also have another WJCL special guest writer, Jesse Blanco, who shares his personal story as well, on page 11, about his mother and a change in his life. I attended a VIP party at Stacye and Lannie’s house with special guests Michael Banks and Ruby Gettinger. Ruby was sweet on Starling, and Starling was equally excited to meet her! It was a wonderful party that was catered by Top Sail and Elé. If you have not been to Top Sail and tried their Bulgogi then you are missing something really good (I mean really good)! Go by and see Kim and her mom Chong, (they look more like sisters!) they are located at Tybee Island Marina
(see their ad and map on page 41). This year’s Pirate Fest shirt is wicked. It was designed by the very talented artist Kris Griffin of Tybee Island Customs, and they will be available soon online at www. tybeeisland. c o m / piratefest. Here is a picture of the artwork, but I don’t know how much detail you will be able to see in black & white print. I love how the lighthouse has been hit by a cannon ball; sorry Cullen (a.k.a Scullen Bones)! Nickie’s 1971 will be open soon for all the “old” Tybee people to get a dose of nostalgia from back in the day, from the food to the décor; you might even see your picture up on the wall of fame! I can’t wait! (I love me some Nickie)! Leonard, a.ka. The Sandman, entertained beach-goers while building his sand castles for Fannie’s on the beach! “Be Breezy... You’re on Tybee Time!” ~Sundi

My Life Since My Loss By Jennifer Beale Tybee Babe at Heart and Entertainment Reporter WJCL/Fox28 THECOASTALSOURCE.COM
I will never forget an email exchange last summer in which Casey Jones said, “you will learn to live a NEW normal.” He was referring to what life would be like for me after the loss of my baby. Maddox was born on June 28, 2009 at 8:07am via c-section. Within moments doctors knew something was really wrong. It took a few hours for doctors to diagnose him with aortic atresia and about an 8 percent chance of survival. This came as a huge shock as Maddox had looked great in all of his ultrasounds and there were no warning signs. He was life flighted to Atlanta’s Eggleston Children’s Hospital where he died around 5pm soon as he made it to the operating table. It is interesting that you never know what your
10
grieving style will be until you are faced with a death head on. I have been to very few funerals and all of my grandparents passed when I was young so I had never truly experienced this kind of loss. I remember reading an article prior to having Maddox in which RUN DMC’s wife Justine said her grieving style was short and fast and she was ready to get back to life and move on. She too was referring to the loss of her baby girl who was born with internal organs on the outside. I remember thinking her grieving style seemed kind of harsh. However, I soon learned Justine and I were actually very similar in that way. For the first 4 weeks I woke up crying and went to bed crying. There is something about nights and mornings as I am sure many of you have experienced. I remember thinking some days that I would never get over this and be normal again. But one day I just woke up and didn’t cry anymore. The next day came, no crying..and so on. I began to realize maybe my grieving style was exactly like Justine’s. I was suddenly done with the crying and ready to get back to work. I did just that and everything fell right back into place. Exactly 3 months after Maddox died I found out I was pregnant again. Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage 6 weeks later. It was disappointing but I am not gonna lie... the grief was nothing like losing Maddox. For a while after being back at work and going through both of these things so publically, I thought I would truly be living a NEW normal as Casey had described. However, these days my NEW normal feels pretty much like the OLD normal, which is perfectly fine with me. I vowed that 2010 would be a great year after such a crappy 2009 and it has been! I bought a house, my husband’s businesses are booming, and I am going to Cabo San Lucas next weekend! Work has been great with my trip to Los Angeles to interview Miley Cyrus and the cast of “The Last Song,” not to mention all the star interviews during the Savannah Film Festival and a host of other fun surprises. I’ve also enjoyed watching my coworker Ashley Jacobs, go through the stages of pregnancy. Ironically, last summer she filled in for me while I was out on maternity leave and this summer I will fill in for her when she goes on maternity leave. The timing is almost identical. I can’t wait to see little baby Addison! Ashley knows she has an instant babysitter as we live so close to each other. One day I feel sure she will return the favor as well...but for now I am doing just fine. Great to be exact!

My Life is About to Change... Forever By Jesse Blanco FRIEND OF TYBEE and Evening Anchor WJCL/Fox28 THECOASTALSOURCE.COM
Some time in late February of 1993, my mom, dad and grandmother gave me a ride to Miami International Airport. Despite objections from all three, I was leaving home. I was moving to Athens to continue school at the University of Georgia. I was leaving behind a post-Hurricane Andrew clean up. I was leaving behind a lot of things that held me back. I was leaving behind a very large extended family. I was doing what was best for me. The car pulls up at the curb, we all get out, tears are shed and I say my goodbyes. My mom, however, (in a pre-9/11 world) demands that my dad wait at the curb while she walks me to security. Sometimes it’s just never enough for moms. Latin moms at that. The closer we got to the ropes, the harder she cried. Fast forward 17 years to this Friday. Ironically, for only about the fourth time since that February day, I will be on an airplane at Miami International Airport. Only this time, I will be arriving, not departing. I’m going back for mom. Dad passed away just over five years ago, understandably leaving a huge void in my mother’s life. Mom’s mom passed about a year and a half after that making the void bigger. My sister remains in South Florida, but just last year her health took a tragic turn for the worst. She is battling advanced stages of Diabetes. She has already lost most of a foot to amputation. I’m told there will be more. The life my mother enjoyed just 10 years ago in Miami doesn’t exist anymore. Sunday trips to Red Lobster or the movies with my dad or even drives along Miami Beach. Those days are long gone and she desperately needs to fill the void and occupy her time. Of all the cities my career has taken me, Savannah has always been her favorite. She almost cried when I told her I was coming back. She will love it here, i’m sure. Over the last 2 years she has visited for weeks at a time, all the while getting more and more comfortable with the slower pace of life, friendly neighbors and afternoons at Forsyth Park with her granddaughter. It’s a natural fit. Now to be fair, my mom is only 66 years old. She can fend for herself most of the time, but I can’t help but wonder sometimes where all that common sense she had when I was 10 has gone. She doesn’t always
make the smartest decisions, or worse yet, she gets lost when I ask her to check if its raining outside. Despite the denials, her memory is horrible and 50 years of smoking leaves her short of breath walking back to the car after a trip to Publix. That’s part of the deal, I guess. A deal I am willing to accept. I have to actually. There is really no one else. When she tries my patience, as she tends to do, I will try to remember the day when we rode two busses and walked a mile just so I could get a toy from the Marines Toys for Tots Program at Christmas time. I will remember those nights when I was at home alone with my sister during the holidays because she was working overtime -well past my bedtimeso I could have that new bike for Christmas. Or I will remember when she’d get home on a Friday night at 1 or 2am from her job at the donut shop and wake me up so I could have some donuts with her. It’s now my turn to make sure she gets to appointments on time. It’s now my turn to make sure she has all she needs. It’s now my turn to try to find things for her to do on the weekend that she may enjoy. Sometimes, I wince at what may lie ahead, sometimes I smile. Regardless, I look forward with great optimism. I’m doing what’s best for mom.

By Jason Buelterman Mayor of Tybee Island Is it really August already?! They say that time goes by faster the older you get. Seems like summer used to last forever when I was a kid but goes by in the blink of an eye these days. Maybe that’s just me... Anyhow, as we all know; Tybee is having a very busy summer. Besides the impact of the oil spill, we also have an economy that is in somewhat better shape than it was a year ago and are experiencing the impact of the spring release of the Miley Cyrus movie. All of this adds up to heavier traffic, jam-packed parking lots and long waits at many of our restaurants. The City Council recently adopted its 20102011 budget. Our fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. Although amendments will inevitably be made to the approved budget, it essentially establishes how much money we anticipate bringing in and how that money will be spent. The City’s revenue comes primarily from a few sources: property taxes, parking fees, hotel/motel taxes, licenses/permits, special purpose local option sales tax (or SPLOST) and local option sales tax (LOST). The last two are the 5th and 6th cents of the sales tax and are collected county-wide. Funds are distributed to each municipality based on agreements made between the cities and Chatham County about what portion of the total collections will be doled out to each governmental entity. Many of our revenue sources are lower than they have been in the past. Property taxes are down due to lower property valuations. And licenses and permits are down as well mostly due to less development and construction activity. LOST

checks from the county are also lower than they were a few years back because of the overall downturn in the economy since late 2008. But our parking collections and hotel/motel collections are up. And because the County has not disbursed any SPLOST revenues in the last 18 months, we will see a marked increase in funds from the county. All of the municipalities and the County agreed to postpone receiving revenue from SPLOST until sufficient funds were collected for construction of the new county detention center. We will finally start receiving SPLOST revenue in November 2010. We were therefore able to build this revenue stream into our budget. These funds will allow the City, despite decreases in revenue from other sources, to continue to address many of the projects on our capital improvement list. Based on the anticipated revenue from the sources listed above, we developed (after a series of budget workshops) a balanced budget. Municipalities cannot, like the federal government, have an annual budget deficit. So we asked each department head to carefully review all anticipated expenditures so as to ensure as much efficiency as possible while not impacting city services. Many departmental line items were trimmed from previous year levels. For instance, rather than buying two new police cars, we only budgeted for one. Things like this will incrementally lead to higher maintenance costs. We also combined some duties and responsibilities of staff members which resulted in three employees with lower salaries and slight decreases in contributions to their pensions. But no city staff is being furloughed. None are being laid off. And none are losing their benefits. Consequently, service delivery for our citizens will not be impacted. Many other cities are laying off police officers and key staff. We are not in that situation and anticipate coming through this severe recession relatively unscathed. Thanks in large part to the SPLOST checks we will soon be receiving, we also budgeted, as I mentioned earlier, for many capital projects. SPLOST funds can only be used for projects that were identified when the voters of our County were asked to approve or deny the extension of the SPLOST tax for another 5 years. This referendum resulted in the extension of SPLOST from 2009 until 2014. Once these funds begin coming to the City in November, we will begin work on several projects which the City Council approved during our budget workshops and which were on the list of approved SPLOST projects. The focus of our capital improvement spending is on infrastructure and public safety. Our Fire Station will be expanded by one bay so that much of the new equipment the City has purchased or received from the state and county can be adequately secured and sheltered from the elements. We also have allocated approximately $300,000 of SPLOST money to pay for the engineering and design work on a new public safety building. This facility is badly needed and will be built next to our existing Police Station. Funds from SPLOST will also go towards completion of the drainage project which has been under construction on the south end of the Island. We
will be placing a new crosswalk at Highway 80 and McKenzie to allow for safe pedestrian passage across Highway 80 in our north end business corridor. We also have funds for more street paving. We are buying more bike racks to be placed near our beach crossovers. There are several other capital projects that have been included in the budget thanks largely to SPLOST funds. Despite the ongoing economic woes, we will continue our aggressive capital improvement plan this year and in future years as we receive these SPLOST funds. We do so, though, keeping in mind the importance of our long term responsibility to fund the local cost of beach re-nourishment. We have a wide beach now but history tells us that in about 5 and a half years, we will need another injection of sand. Therefore, approximately $2,000,000 of our SPLOST allocation will be set aside for the next beach re-nourishment while we continue to set aside $150,000 from our general fund for the next re-nourishment as well. This is all being done in a way that minimizes the impact on Tybee property owners. Our millage has hovered around 4.0 for the past few years. This represents the lowest millage in the county for those municipalities that collect property taxes. This compares favorably to Savannah, for instance, which has a millage around 12.0. We also have been able to maintain our $200,000 homestead exemption, which keeps 56% of our Island’s residents from paying a single penny to the City of Tybee in property taxes. Should you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me on my cell at 844.8427 or via e-mail at buelterman@hotmail.com. As many of you know, Ole Slo loves to travel the highways and byways of this great land of ours seeking out new and interesting people and places to experience. The most recent adventure took us to Panama City, Florida to see the kids. Now, Panama City is not one of my favorite places. The drive on I-10 is boring at best, and once you do get off the interstate, the drive down to the Gulf is miserable. The speed limit changes from 65 to 35 ten times and there are loads of Pentecostal churches along that stretch. (I could swear I heard banjo music.) Anyway, we arrive at our motel, check-in, and ride the elevator up to the third floor. This is when the nightmare really began. As we stepped off the lift, we spotted our room, directly across the hall…yep, right at the elevator. Strike one. We were pretty sure it was our room, but we weren’t positive because there were a dozen or so kids ranging from four to ten “playing” in the hall at our door. Strike two. The big question at that point was: Do we go downstairs and ask to be moved to another room? Old Slo thought that would be over reacting so we stayed put. I mean, how bad could this get, right? Well, as soon as we unpacked, the screaming started. Banging on all the room doors ensued, and the day was quickly turning to poop. Come to find out, there was a national softball tourney taking place and it was for the girls eight to ten years of age. Of course, the whole family had to come see sis play, and that included everybody from four to fourteen and they had to all yell and scream all night long. I finally dozed off around three-thirty Tuesday morning. Strike three. The second and final night turned out much better. Motel management must have had a talk with the parents and things were quiet for the first time. Then something really strange happened. Wednesday, as I was sitting on the “throne” contemplating world affairs, I flushed. Oh God! The water in the bowl was steaming hot. I mean HOT! I thought my butt was on fire. Now, why in the world would they be piping hot water into the toilet? That is exactly what I asked the clerk at the front desk. And friends, the answer I got was equally as bizarre as the water temperature itself. But, that is a topic for another time. Tybee Breeze

Please call or come by for details for these and all other camps and programs. Whether you call Tybee home or just enjoy visiting for a weekend, we have memberships and guest passes tailored for you and your family! Stop by and tour our facility and ask about options to fit your schedule and needs. Aug. 20th will be our next family roller skate night so mark your calendars and stretch out the ole’ legs and come participate in one of Tybee’s best Friday night events! The fee is 3 dollars and covers the skates and all the fun you can have. Concessions are also available. We are always striving to provide the best programs to the Tybee community. One of the ways we have been successful is to always listen to the ideas and suggestions of the community. With that said we would like to officially encourage anyone and everyone to give us your thoughts on potential programs and ideas for camps, as well as general suggestions for us to make the YMCA experience even better. If you’ve ever been sitting around thinking how awesome it would be to play tennis but didn’t have anyone to play, consider this your lucky day. The Tybee YMCA is forming an adult tennis league this fall and will be hosting the 1st annual Tybee tennis tournament this year. It will be informal and all inclusive. Tentatively there will be brackets for age groups and skill levels for the tennis league with an option to register for the tournament. Sign ups begin in August and will close August 27 so we can set up the brackets. League play will begin the week of September 6. Stop by the YMCA throughout the month for more details. We will continue our monthly youth tennis lessons as well. Special thanks goes out to Carl Looper for his volunteer instruction at water aerobics. Carl stepped in

the first few weeks of classes to get us started at River’s End Campground. I know all of our participants sincerely appreciate his enthusiasm and his antics and banter which probably helps us forget we’re actually exercising because we’re so entertained. Thanks again Carl! Fall soccer registration for ages 3-14 is ongoing with season practices beginning in September. Sign up early to avoid late fees and ensure that we have enough participants for your age group. We are looking for volunteer coaches as well! Don’t forget about our Priceless Gifts Scholarships Fund. Thanks to our generous donors, over $25,000 in contributions has already been collected in 2010. Last year, we gave out over $59,000 in scholarships. At the YMCA, no one is ever turned away! We’d like to introduce our newest personal trainer at the YMCA, Jerry Oates. Jerry comes to us from Columbus, GA and has over 35 years in weightlifting and strength training. Before his time at the Tybee YMCA, Jerry traveled the world as a professional wrestler and owned and operated his own gym for 25 years. Jerry can train ages 18-80+ and his personal mission is help folks from all abilities get stronger so they can have a better quality of life. The Active Adult League/Yeepies enjoyed a great day out on the water on the Diamond Casino boat. They also went on a great Gravestone Adventure Tour and Haunted Dinner at the Six Pence Pub and a trip to Hilton Head and the Tanger Outlets. Don’t forget about our other weekly events like line dancing, cards, and the bridge club. Call for more details. C o m i n g in September—Irish dancing lessons, youth classes in dance and karate, adult education classes, and more Yeepies field trips.

Dear Readers, Fran and husband Fred Van Flanders have once again gone abroad and afar to search out Fred’s ancestors and family tree. This time they’re going to New York to check on possible early Dutch family ties and then on to Holland and Belgium to seek out other relatives. Fran thinks the infamous Moll Flanders may be a distant English cousin. And then there was also a book called Dog of Flanders (later made into a movie) that they want to do some research on.

Communication Concerning Communication By Judy O’Neill Last month, some new laws went into effect concerning the use of cell phones while driving. I’ve been using a phone in my car since 1989. That’s pre cell phones, y’all. Back then there were CAR phones that were permanently affixed to some part of the dash board or center console. They were big cumbersome things but had some good features even then. Things like speed dial and speaker phones so you could talk “hands free.” I can remember people with strange expressions staring at me at traffic lights and other places where traffic had slowed or stopped. I realized that it looked like I was talking to myself. Like now, when I’m in a public place and somebody is talking out loud on one of those Blue Tooth things
that you don’t readily see. (It’s embarrassing when I respond to one of those people because I think they’re talking to me. Instead of them looking dumb and like they’re talking to themselves out loud in public, I look dumb because I didn’t realize they were on the phone.) My, how times have changed. You know, I’m not sure these new laws will have much impact. Bad drivers will be bad drivers. Cell phones or not. Eating while driving can be just as distracting. Maybe we should ban that too. Plus, what happens if you swallow wrong and start choking and need the Heimlich maneuver? Do you text somebody? And speaking of texting, I’m learning to like that little innovation. This from a former English teacher whose formal standard English composition class rules didn’t even allow the use of contractions! I can truly understand the no texting while driving. I have to really concentrate to see those little letters and come up with the appropriate short forms for text messages. Not to mention the fact that the past tense of text (texted) sounds like a really bad grammar error when I say it. N honr of nu txting lws, I will try 2 wrte ths parag as if I were txting u. OMG. Ths is not e z. But is fun 4 me b/c I cn mke grmmr erros. I no sum of u do ths lts betr than I do. Duz ths remnd u of wrtin n secrt code whn u were yung? LOL. Got 2 qut. Get n a hed ache. I’d like to suggest an addendum to the cell phone law. I think cycling and jogging on the streets while wearing your head phones blasting music into your ears should be outlawed. I was behind a jogger on my street last weekend. He was running pretty much in the middle of the street, headphones on, with no clue that I was driving right behind him. I finally made it home. He jogged on with no idea HOW CLOSE he had come to being a statistic! Remember: You can’t legislate common sense or good manners. ‘Til next time. C ya!

These snippets are based on a large record book kept in a safe at City Hall containing the handwritten minutes of council meetings and other happenings in the Town of Tybee from 1887 until 1925. I have tried to find those items that will be of the greatest interest and amusement to Tybee readers of a century later. I include many names since it was apparent from the start that a lot of Tybee folks of today will know, indeed be related to, some of these people of yesteryear.

On to 1905 and some Citizen Activism Last month I quoted the Memoriam adopted by resolution at the Council meeting of July 14, 1904, honoring Henry Solomon who had faithfully served the Town of Tybee for the 14 years preceding his death. That final meeting of 1904 went on to appoint a replacement for Councilman Solomon: “On account of the death of Henry Solomon, a vacancy on the board of councilmen exists, and by unanimous vote Mr. H.P. Smart (?) was elected Councilman for the balance of the term.” Next, “The Clerk of Council was authorized to refund to the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co $16.20, the amount paid in error for Real Estate Tax for 1904, same to be paid to the Town of Tybee through the Attorney General later.” No, I have no clue what this was all about. Finally, “On motion of Councilman Stillwell, seconded by Councilman Blun, it was ordered that the plank walk on Chatham Avenue south of Main Street be widened to five planks instead of three planks, and lengthened to the railroad on Main Street.” I imagine present-day Council would like to deal with such weighty issues as their predecessors handled over a century ago! Council would meet only twice in 1905. At the first meeting of April 25, the usual ordinances, taxes, fees, appointments, and the like were decided. Some of the licensing activities and fees bear repeating. “Every keeper or owner or lessee of a billiard table, other than those used in private dwellings, the sum of $5. For each table and for every pool table or tables on which pool is played the sum of $5.” “Every owner or proprietor of a rifle range, the sum of $5.” “Every keeper, lessee or owner of an aerial tramway, switch back, or toboggan slide operating cars, $25. If operated by wire, $5.” I still don’t know what these aerial tramways, switch backs, and toboggan rides were all about.
“Every flying horse exhibition or itinerant show $10.” Ditto. “Every keeper of a show or place of amusement or circus $10.” “Each and every museum $10.” “Every keeper of a restaurant or eating house $5.” “Every keeper of a feed or livery stable $5.” “Every telephone company twenty five dollars.” A liquor license, excuse me, a license “to sell malt, vinous, spirituous liquors or beer the product of any brewery, within the corporate limits of said Town” remained $100. Tybee must have been a jumping place a century ago. The second and final meeting of Council for 1905 was held on August 3, 1905. Three communications had been received. The first was from the president of the Tybee Beach Co. protesting against an increase in valuation of taxable property. This communication “was received as information.” The second was from the property owners of Estill Station also regarding increased taxation. This one was “on motion placed on the table.” The third one: “A communication was presented by W.B. Stephen – Chairman of a committee appointed by the property owners, at a mass meeting held at Hotel Tybee July 25th 1905 – relating to the present condition of the drainage [?] on Tybee Island: Maj. Stephen made a very interesting talk on the resolution passed at the mass meeting requesting that the Town authorize taking steps towards improving the drainage [?] condition in the Town.” Council appointed Councilmen Kehoe, Dixon and Stillwell to serve on a committee to consider the property owner’s resolution and report back to council. ‘This last “communication” is historic. It represents the first time I have seen any evidence of significant citizen involvement in the affairs of the town’s governance in the 18 years Tybee had been incorporated. Even at the polls citizen impacts were next to nil. Will be interesting to see how things evolve from here on in the Town of Tybee.

Dog Days of Summer Our European ancestors looked into the night sky and mapped out constellations. They saw the likes of bears, bulls, dogs and others. The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky (most months). In the summer, however, Sirius, the ‘’Dog Star,’ rises and sets with the sun. The ancients believed that during this time period (July-August) the star added to the sun’s heat, the dog days of summer.
Shrimp has proven to be killer redfish bait. The body of a small shrimp and two claws that dangle off the front, look just like a mud crabs tools. Flounder fishing has been very good this year and will continue to improve through the fall as these fish gorge on shrimp, minnows and mullet. My favorite artificial bait for flounder is the bass assassin, rigged on a jig head or weed less hook.

Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports June - July There were no “called” missions in the last few weeks. We did get a call to assist the Tybee Island Fire Dept. with an incident they were working. Our skipper elected not to page the unit and instead he and the other members standing on the dock (when the call came in) would handle this themselves. George reported they “didn’t do much the Fire dept. had pretty much taken care of everything.” I like writing “Thank Y o u Letters”…. usually m e a n s someone d i d something nice for somebody. This is Absolutely one of those. D a w n ’ s Backup crew would like to Thank Everyone who Donated EVERY THING to this recent event; from silent auction items to food. ALL of it was donated. Bless you all! Also D.W. asked me to thank the musicians, servers, runners, shuttle, legion staff and of course “Uncle Georgie” & the “Zoo” unit (MRS cooking squad)! I never liked to name individuals because it’s to easy to omit someone and that’s just not right... I will say some of you truly are superstars, and I was honored to be working with you.

A view from the porch of the Lighthouse Inn – Yes there is life on the North end of the Island and we will try to let everyone know what is happening with this end of the island from “the porch” and from our wonderful guests.
Rewarded… After a wonderful week on Tybee and staying at the Lighthouse Inn, Mary Francis revealed that she was a professional chef. Stuart hates hearing that after he has fed them breakfast for a week. She stated she would cook supper for the four of us. She showed up with several filet mignons, made biscuits and a tomato pie. It was all delicious. How soon we forget…Remember complaining about the cold this winter? It was the coldest winter we could remember on Tybee since ’96. Well look what we got by complaining. Stuart never complains about the heat but he is getting close. Comments: We had a lovely, magical Tybee weekend! Thank you for your hospitality. We felt very much at home! Sarah and Todd, Athens, Georgia Thank you for being so gracious and hospitable You were so helpful and were so close to everything we really had a wonderful time and the north end of the island is so peaceful. We hope to see you in the future. Sue and Thad, LaCrosse, WI Thank you for sharing your home with us! It has made our 30th anniversary a vacation to cherish forever! Jeff and Tia, Williamsport, Indiana Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality. The Lighthouse Inn is such a gem and we are so happy to have spent this peaceful and relaxing holiday weekend here. The breakfasts were great and we especially enjoyed spending time on “the porch” and hearing your stories. We hope to return soon to Tybee Island! Lauren and Joaquin, Morristown, NJ We love southern cooking and hospitality. Thank you so much for making our trip to Tybee even more special. You two are awesome! Burton 4-H Center Tybee Island Activities Are you enjoying your summer yet?! Most people are in the groove of things by now, enjoying the warm weather and good times that summer brings. The weather seems to be even hotter than normal, at least to me! Maybe I’m just addicted to air conditioning by this point in my life, but I can hardly seem to handle the heat anymore. Things are a little different when it comes to sea turtles, though. Since sea turtles are a type of reptile, they are dependent on the outside temperature to keep their bodies regulated and running normally. This type of thermoregulation is most commonly known as “cold-blooded,” but that term is a misnomer since their blood never really gets cold; the more appropriate term is “ectothermic.” This means that these animals will seek out warm temperatures to help them maintain homeostasis in their own bodies, allowing them to keep up their metabolism and carry out day-to-day bodily functions. Our sea turtle, Clover, is a great example of this process. We strive to make sure that she stays warm in the very cold winter months, but in the summertime that job is much easier. In these hot days, we don’t need to take any extra measures to make sure she is at her optimal body temperature. It stays a very toasty 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit in her room. This keeps her perky and happy – and her appetite is very healthy as well! August 13th 2010 is Clover’s 2nd birthday and we will have a special article for her in next month’s issue! Keep an eye out for this update in her growth, new pictures, and even a hint to when we will be ready to release her on Tybee Island! 22

Shrimp Scampi Shrimp Scampi has always been a favorite way to prepare and eat shrimp with pasta, linguine is always my choice. In the U.S. the word Scampi has come to define the method of preparation rather than the ingredient. Purists may note that this ItalianAmerican specialty isn’t really scampi (Adriatic crayfish) but as its name promises, it really is shrimp cooked scampi style. For the last 20 years shrimp scampi has been one of our most popular meals at Hunter House. I made this variation last night at home and loved every bite of simple ingredients that must have been introduced at “E-Harmony.” Made to be together! Ingredients: 1 lb. large (21-25 count) peeled, deveined, and butter-flied 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 3/4 cup dry white wine 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce (I like more) 2 or 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced 2 or 3 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup chicken stock 4 tbsp. unsalted butter in 4 pieces Salt and pepper to taste 1 tbsp. chopped flat leaf parsley Directions: Dredge shrimp in flour and set aside. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet over high heat. Working in batches sauté shrimp until just barely golden, not quite 2 mins. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate to absorb oil. Drain and discard excess oil from pan (leaving 1 tbsp.), then stir in wine, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, lemon juice, and stock. Cook until reduced by half about 5 to 7 mins. Off heat whisk in butter 1 piece at a time and season with salt and pepper. Lower heat to med. low and add shrimp to reheat, tossing to coat well with sauce, about 1 min. Sprinkle with parsley just before serving. Serve over linguine and sprinkle with a little olive oil, if you like. Hope you enjoy! Chef Espy ~ Hunter House Sighs or Moans - chefespy@bellsouth.net
Responsible Alcohol Use
After two short months on Tybee, I had to write about responsible alcohol use. I couldn’t not do so. When I look at the AVOIDABLE calls that are made to me as The Beach Doc, the common thread is frequently over-consumption of alcohol. While I am not about to say that there is anything wrong with responsible alcohol use in moderation, there are many things wrong with mixing excessive alcohol with the ocean or rivers or boats or cars. I can’t count the number of times I have watched a sunburned beachgoer failing a sobriety test on Butler or Highway 80 after a great day at the beach. What a terrible way to end a beautiful day! Sitting on the beach and drinking beer all day is a recipe for disaster. Alcohol is a powerful diuretic (meaning it causes your body to make urine). Sitting out in the sun also causes your body to lose water through sweat. This relative dehydration cause’s one’s blood alcohol level to be even higher, than if they were well-hydrated. Knowing an acceptable amount of alcohol to consume and remain legally sober may be useful, but there are so many variables that can affect one’s blood alcohol level. Body weight, hydration status, liver function, alcohol content of the beverage, time to consume a volume of alcohol, food load and other factors can all effect blood alcohol levels. Therefore it is difficult to draw a rule of thumb for safe alcohol consumption, especially in a beach environment where relative dehydration can frequently occur. The time to make a decision regarding responsible alcohol use begins before the
first drink. Individuals need to plan to catch a ride with a non-drinker or call a cab if alcohol use is part of the plan. Here on Tybee, with the incredible service of the Crab Cab, it is unfathomable that anyone would ever get a DUI. Groups need to determine a designated driver in advance and encourage that these individuals have nonalcoholic beverages for their entire day. The designated driver is the hero for the day and needs to be treated as such! The complications involving DUI are worth discussion. The medical issues in an otherwise healthy person are typically short-lived, as long as trauma does not occur during the time of inebriation; however the legal ramifications can last for years or even decades. I have seen careers ended, relationships lost and reputations damaged. We all have. So please, drink AND SERVE responsibly. Please don’t over-serve patrons who are already drunk. If you drink, use a designated driver, call a Crab Cab or call a friend, but please don’t drink and operate a car, motorcycle or boat or get in the water. Better yet, keep alcohol consumption to a reasonable level. You can enjoy Tybee without over-consuming alcohol and in fact I would argue that Tybee can be enjoyed more without the medical and legal complications of alcohol overuse. I have seen multiple 5-day Tybee visits that have been essentially reduced to a 2 day visit from alcohol overuse: 5 days minus two ½ days of intoxication and 2 days of hangover for each half day of inebriation. Wouldn’t you rather enjoy the full five days? I certainly would! Until next month, stay healthy and be safe! The Beach Doc 23 Tybee Breeze
Thank goodness! The Tybee Wedding Chapel finally got moved on Wednesday, June 28. It was a wonderful day and everything went well. I rode my bicycle along with the chapel the entire trip. What fun! Lannie was there early to help make sure all the loose ends were tied up. Anthony Sapone waited anxiously with the chapel steeple loaded on his trailer ready to be moved to its new home. The steeple, after being broken down and put on the trailer, was as tall as the building without its roof. Mr. Braswell and his experienced moving crew showed up on time and the move began around 10:30 a.m. The City worked with us. DPW had been working on drain lines in the area for months. We had to schedule with Tybee’s permit department, City Police
Department and DPW to allow us to get underway and complete the move. It was necessary to pass where DPW was working. Stop signs were dug up and immediately put back in place as were mail boxes, street signs and other obstacles that I had not anticipated. Naturally, Mr. Braswell, Lannie and Anthony knew exactly what to expect. Power lines were lifted by the moving crew and no one lost power! Local media covered the event with great enthusiasm. The Tybee Wedding Chapel appeared to be under arrest with our fabulous police escort comprised of Tybee’s finest. William Mosley encouraged everyone to work together. “Hodad” was on the case!
So far we have passed the first “footings inspections” on the chapel and continue to get the building situated on its permanent footings. I think that the chapel looks wonderful on U. S. Highway 80/First Street elevated in the trees for all the world to see as we drive past it on our beautiful island. We are all excited about this new project and will keep you posted as we progress. Any great photos would be appreciated. You may send them to tybeechapel@aol.com and we will publish them next month. Thank you for your support. This has been a lot more work than it looks. See you at the chapel! Stacye and Lannie

Our repeat visitors love Tybee’s laid back lifestyle, beautiful beaches, marsh, Savannah and all of our Low Country. They come back to Tybee year after year because it is their second home.

Most of our new vacationers have been enthusiastic about our area, the beautiful homes, our Southern hospitality and beautiful coastal area. They have indicated that this was an area they had planned to explore and want to return and visit next year. Courtesy has been contagious. Yes, we have been busy. However, I truly believe we have been nicer, more patient and more encouraging than in years past because we appreciate our area and the opportunity that Tybee has for years going forward. Thankfully, our restaurants, shops, vacation rentals and hotels have enjoyed a good month and it looks good for months to come. The bookings into the early fall are better than in years past. This should bode well for everyone on Tybee. Lannie and I have been a little too busy. We enjoyed hosting many celebrities, media and the event, “Tybee Throws A Fit,” was a huge success. That was followed by the Jarrell Family Reunion.
Our hearts go out to the communities who have lost their economic footing because of the Gulf oil spill and we pray that it gets contained as soon as humanly possible Watching the damage to the Gulf only makes us understand how lucky we are to have such a wonderful area to live and enjoy. I hope that we all have a safe summer and we will see you around Tybee. Stacye, Lannie and the Oceanfront team

are reddish in color and can be found near ditches and low lying areas with standing water. They are basically controlled with a proper pesticide application with residual properties. I’ve not found them to be common in our area, but just the same, they do exist.
Fleas
Fleas have a tendency to occur in early spring and throughout the warmer months of the year. Their size can be about 3/16 of an inch long. They are known to jump many times their length. Some other characteristics of these insects include living and nesting in carpets, furniture, and in-between wooden floor cracks and are considered to be blood sucking parasites. They have been known to feed on birds and other mammals. There are several diseases that can be transmitted from them, some of which are typhus and bubonic plague. They also carry tape worms from rodents, cats, dogs and can transmit them to humans.
Dog and Cat Fleas
Dog and cat fleas are common in the same vicinity and these, as most types, rest within their cocoon stage until any vibration causes them to emerge. They can prey on these hosts and many other animals. There is a similar type called “Squirrel Flea.” These creatures that we so often think of as an enhancement to our surrounding, lilt and bounce around our trees and landscape areas as do many of our outside friends in the wild and can deposit many fleas and flea eggs for us and our domestic pets to be exposed to.
Maintenance and Control
Flea control consists of a regimented program that includes a thorough inspection of the premises both inside and out for a proper evaluation. The most important factor is customer assistance. It is wise to incorporate rodent and flea control simultaneously. A spot treatment is also recommended inside of the home as well as a perimeter outside treatment. Pets should be treated accordingly by your personal veterinarian. It is most helpful for the homeowner to vacuum all areas and remove the bag to an outside garbage facility. Sanitation is most important in the control of these insects and a good carpet cleaning is also recommended before any treatment. We in the industry incorporate a flea egg growth regulator which can inhibit the young flea egg stage from the emergence of new fleas. This has proven to be most helpful in the control of these insects.

Oriental Rat Flea
An original rat flea differs from dog and cat fleas. They are most common with the Norway rat and can be found on this rat and many other species, including cotton rabbits and ground squirrels. They can also transmit diseases to humans and many other animals. They are also jumpers.
Shrimp Fleas
Several years ago I was called to service one of my clients that had described their problem as strange unidentifiable insects. Upon my investigation I was a bit perplexed as these were new to me. I brought samples of these insects into the office and by chance there was an entomology friend of the company visiting and diagnosed them as Shrimp Fleas. By Tammy Smith Tybee Sea Turtle Project Coordinator On May 20, a sea turtle crawl was found by one of the volunteers at the East Gate (Sugar Shack) crossover. After almost three hours of digging, I determined that eggs were not found, but the area had all the field signs of a loggerhead nest. The area was marked and recorded as an unknown area. The volunteers with the Sea Turtle Project monitored the area for a total of 54 days. On Tuesday, July 13, the unknown area was determined to be an actual nest. That makes five nests on Tybee so far this season (this may change by the time this is published). Unfortunately, due to rain the previous nights, the field signs of a settling nest were missed. Without the aid of our volunteers, the baby loggerhead hatchlings emerged on their own on that Tuesday evening. Not surprisingly, the hatchlings quickly became disorientated following the lights at the Butler Curve and various porch lights in the area, instead of the reflection of the moon over the ocean. Babies instinctively follow the brightest spot on the horizon; unfortunately, the artificial lighting on Tybee is the brightest. The Butler Curve is one the brightest locations on our beach. The disorientation caused the hatchlings to head towards the bright lights; sadly they headed for the dune area towards Highway 80. We d n e s d ay morning, I received a call informing me that Officer Charlie Powers responded to a house on 2nd Avenue with a report of a baby turtle. I quickly left my
cereal on the counter and headed to check it out. I was halfway expecting the turtle in question to be a baby diamond back that someone has mistaken for a sea turtle. I was completely wrong and once I saw the tiny loggerhead, I knew in an instant that the “unknown area was a nest after all. Then the fear set in! I just knew then that if this little guy had crossed the highway, his siblings did also and were possibly run over by cars on Butler. The search was on for other stragglers live or dead in the area of 2nd Avenue down to 3rd Street. Three volunteers, Monica Bailey, Cheryl Tilton and Amy Capello joined in the search along with a few residents in the area. We searched dunes, backyards, pools, streets, sidewalks, and the beach looking for lost turtles. Throughout the day searches and reports took place of folks finding babies and putting them in the ocean, three hatchlings were taken to the Marine Science Center. The live hatchlings found throughout the day were kept in a dark, quite spot until nightfall. At around 8:45, with a large crowd to observe, the hatchlings were released to begin their two day swim frenzy to the Sargasso Sea already a day behind their siblings. I and a few volunteers sat with the nest during the night to monitor any straggler hatchlings that could emerge and become confused. I knew that Tybee was an active beach of all hours of the day, but I was amazed at the amount of people walking on the beach during the night. Pretty much everyone on the beach had a flashlight. Some folks were even setting off fireworks. No wonder Tybee is not visited by more nesting females, the beach is ridiculously bright! Nesting females and emerging hatchlings are distracted by the white light from artificial lights such as flashlights, cell phones, camera flashes, traffic and street lights. To cut down on this distraction, I encourage you to use red filtered lights when on the beach at night. Research has shown that the red lighting does not deter turtles in the same way as white lighting. Red filtered lights are inexpensive and easy to find. You can even use red cellophane or taillight tape to cover an existing flashlight. By educating the residents and tourists on the effects of lights on sea turtles, hopefully we can significantly reduce the light pollution during the season. Sea turtle season runs from May 1 through October 31, it is important that we make the effort to reduce the light pollution on and around our beaches at night during those months. For more information on sea turtles or the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center! The center is located at 1510 Strand Avenue, Tybee Island, GA 31328. If you wish to donate, please call (912)786-5917, or visit the website at www. tybeemsc.org. If you are interested in volunteering with the Sea Turtle Project, please contact the Center or send me an email at turtletammy@bellsouth.net. Tybee Breeze

The Last Airbender:
Aw man. One part Eragon; one part Lord of the Rings; three parts hot mess. I so wanted M. Knight Shamalamalana to be on it this time (I see dead people). Twas not meant to be. Sigh. Avoid this movie like a hot case of herpes (or even a cold case). It was awful. Even Howard was pissed off. Unthankfully there were no known actors I can pick on. There was one guy that looked vaguely familiar, but this movie was so awful I am not going to even waste my time to figure out who it was. I give this move five full 16 oz cups of bleach (because it really sucked that bad and I’m not lying).
Apocalypto:
Released in 2006, I felt it was important to re-introduce this movie to the masses as this is apparently the month of Mel Gibson and his meltdown. However, I am afraid that many of you missed this movie because it does have English sub-titles. I know everyone rushed to see Passion of the Christ (subtitles only), but that was different as it involved Jesus. Apocalypto does not. Well, unless your about to get your head cut off (no atheists in a fox hole). This really is a fabulous movie. Directed by Mel and set in South America, era of pre-electricity, no indoor plumbing, etc., the scene is set with a tribe of indigenous people just trying to make a go of it. Enter evil Mayan warriors’ intent on capturing innocent villagers for sacrificial purposes to appease the Gods. Follow up with a Mayan dude named Jaguar Paw who is on a mission to save his pregnant wife and child. This movie rocks and I don’t even speak Mayan. Rent this DVD. Blood, guts, good guys save the day. Gotta love it. I give this move 3 bottles of Patron (because it’s a really good heart pumping movie), and 2 bottles of Cuervo (because you do have to read).

Rocker at Law By Alaina Loughridge
You know the best joke ever? What do you call a thousand attorneys buried up to their necks in cement? Not enough cement! Hee Hee. Granted, most of them belong there, but not all. There are decent attorneys out there. Michael Moody is one of them. If any island needs an attorney, it would definitely be this one, and Michael is one of us. Well, a sober one of us. Michael Moody is the island’s latest acquisition. And thank God for him! Not only can he get your drunk, stupid self out of jail he can seriously jam out on the guitar. Not that the judge would appreciate that, but we do! Mr. Moody has got some rock solid credentials: In 1990 he obtained his law degree from Georgia State and went right into prosecuting the bad guys in Fulton County. Five years later, he moved to prosecuting the bad guys in Cobb County. After 10 years, Michael decided to switch teams. Moving into private practice, for almost the past 11 years, he has been defending those accused of crimes. Born in South Carolina, Moody grew up in Greensboro, NC. Hooked on soul and R & B since first memory, he began playing at 12 years old and turned professional at 14 (yeah, 14). In his early 20’s he cruised the boulevard to Atlanta, a natural fit as soul and R & B were and still are a huge presence. After several years on the road playing music with some phenomenal bands (Wild Cherry – Play That Funky Music White Boy), Moody decided to settle down and become a law student. Focusing on criminal defense, including D.U.I., personal injury and family law, Moody also has experience in wills, trusts, and family estate planning. In addition, he has access to financial planners and a variety of other experienced professionals that can assist him in assisting you in the best plan for what you need (can’t beat a whole bunch of people focused on you). Rates are reasonable and affordable. In addition, if you do something extraordinarily stupid, you can contact him at any time. However, don’t be dumb. If you got caught jaywalking at 3 in the morning,
do not call him until an appropriate business time. He also accepts Visa/MasterCard. Cash is cool too. Oh, and he also does his own typing. Having known several attorneys in my past life (no, don’t think that: I have always been a good law abiding citizen), I can say that after my interview with Michael Moody, I can assure you that he does have a true passion and obligation to his client. He very much wants to focus on the islands and has expanded to Thunderbolt (3232 Russell Street – right behind Tortugas). Here on the island he is located at 701 First Street. You can call him night or day at 912-472-4285. Music may be a true love, but his love of law and the defense of his clients are paramount as well. Having spent most of his vacations on this lovely rock of ours over the past several years, Tybee obviously called (must have known we needed him - how can you leave this place and not miss it? You always come back.). So, even if you don’t have a legal problem you can still catch up with Michael at Huc a Poos every Sunday. Rocking out the blues on the back porch.

By George Walker Commander Here it is August and it’s been a great summer so far. For the Legion this is also when we start reminding everyone that it’s membership renewal time. Our new Legion year began July first, so try to take care of your renewal the next time you’re in the Post. For those of you who may not know, American Legion membership is open to any veteran who has served during a time of conflict. Becoming a Legionnaire gives us more ways to continue “Serving America.” We work closely with the VA’s Voluntary Services Program; assist needy children and families; and we assist deserving high school students with scholarship funds. There are also Americanism Programs such as; Boys/Girls State; high school oratorical competitions; and flag education. Here at Tybee we are actively participating in the project for the “Tybee Island, Circle of Freedom” Veteran’s War Memorial which is a tribute to all veterans who gave their lives for the American ideals of Justice, Freedom, Democracy and Loyalty. For the past fifty years we’ve had an annual Easter egg hunt for kids on the Island, and the great steak dinners on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
American Legion Post 154 Tybee Island, GA I would be remiss if I didn’t congratulate Chuck Bolen as the new Commander of our Sons of the American Legion Squadron. His primary aides; Hal Stillings, Paul Birge and Danny Hill are going to make a fine complement to the Squadron and Legion. If you weren’t a veteran you can still belong by joining the Sons of the American Legion, or Auxiliary, if a member of your family was a veteran. If there are any questions concerning membership call the Post after 5pm (786-5356) or me at 596-1674. Bingo is on Fridays at 8:00pm. Cards go on sale at 7:15pm. Horseshoes will be Saturday evenings at 7:00pm. Both events are open to the public and everyone is invited to participate. The Legion and Auxiliary meet on the second Monday of the month, with social hour (and food) starting at 6:00pm and the meeting at 7:00pm. The Sons of the Legion meet on the third Monday at 7:00pm. As always, Linda or Patti will have the canteen open at 5:00pm every day. For God and Country George Walker Commander American Legion #154
Auxiliary Unit #154 Hello Auxiliary Members and Breeze readers, Wow! Summer is flying by, we are having lots of fun. School will be beginning soon, things on Tybee will slow a bit. Not at the Legion. I would like to make a final push for recipes for our cookbook. We are almost there and about to head to press. We sure would like to include your recipes in our cookbook. We are going to have the cookbook out in time for the holiday season. Please think of this cookbook as a wonderful gift for family and friends. I would like to extend a big thank you to Lynn Marston for heading up this project. Bingo numbers have been running very strong on Friday nights. This is such a fun outing for families visiting Tybee and the regulars alike. For those of you who do attend, please support our Canteen for food. The proceeds from the Canteen support many of the activities that we are able to do to be of service to our community. Although ongoing and not noticeable in one

By Julia Pearce Tybee meet Trent and Rod, they are proof positive that chivalry is alive and well. These fellows walked over the burning sand from the beach to Marlin Monroe’s to get daiquiris for their beautiful sun bathing women. These hunks made three separate trips! They are Hunks-a-Hunks of burning love.
These beautiful women are from Savannah State, and they are enjoying a relaxing day at the beach. These women are from all over the country, they are very smart because they volunteered for summer school; will wonders never cease?

Starfish Scopes August 2010 Leo (July 23 - August 22) Someone will give you a card, and sing happy birthday. It’ll be nice. Virgo (August 23 - September 22) You must relax more, take long walks and fill the bath up really full so that you can soak those weary limbs. You will feel an overwhelming desire to kiss everyone in sight. Libra (September 22 - October 22) Remember: good people are good because they gain wisdom through failure. Happily, there’s every reason to believe you’ll become much better soon! Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Gambling will get the better of you. Remember, gambling doesn’t always mean forfeiting money, but can also take the form of running an amber light, crossing the road when it appears to be safe, and not having medical insurance. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) A hard life will get harder for you as you start drinking heavily. A new love will present itself soon; grab it with both hands, in all possible places. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) Damaging words reach your ears after a disagreement over a neighbor’s pets. Damaging “poo” will be flung back across the garden fence if the issue is not resolved within the next few weeks. You may soon receive good news from a vet. Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) You still have way too much to do. You always have too much to do. If you were any more behind, you would be able to kick yourself. Ever try saying “no?” Sheesh. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Everything will suddenly sound good to you this month. This may be just because you’ve won a serious amount of money and people want to shower you with platitudes. Speaking of which - you do look amazing today! Aries (March 21 - April 19) This is going to be a fairly peculiar month for you. The odds are always on your side, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Nutrition will play a major part of your life for the next week. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) The only conspiracy theory you need to worry about is the one that involves you. You knew about that conspiracy, right? Oh.... dear...God. The truth is much harder to find than fiction. Don’t be afraid to spread dirty lies. Gemini (May 21 - June 20) The perceived wisdom of freaks will begin to all-of-a-sudden make a great deal of sense. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Can you be held responsible for everything you “don’t” do? Who knows? All the best plans go awry, so please make sure you’re ready for any surprises.
By Joni Woodcock I often wonder if there is any future in good behavior, or is it just too damn difficult? I am qualified to ponder on this since I have a Ph.D. in BAD BEHAVIOR, having completed the dubious Trifecta of Mean School, MADD School and Drunk School. I have learned from this “education” that certain things can trigger bad behavior, such as copious amounts of Patron, for instance! Vodka and Chilly Crown are apt to provoke these attacks, also. My solution to this: Drink lots of beer and let happy hour begin at 4:20. Live and let live. Class dismissed!!! B r i t , Scarlett and Isak agree! They are the poster girls for “See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil!” And now for sports news... Huc a Poo’s took home the trophy in softball this season. John and Jason allegedly broke Potter’s
PBR record in the process! In the dart league, Café Loco’s “Loco Cervezas” took home the championship, ending the Quarter’s reign of terror. Doc’s team, the “Old Darts” were given an award for coming in “Dead Last.” Speaking of Potter, he has masterminded the Savannah Beach Film Festival, which is set for Saturday, October 2 at the Poo. There are currently 4 films in production and tickets are $5. The money raised will go to Oceanside Nursing Home for a new gazebo. Apparently John was picking his brain for ideas!!! Have you tried The Social Club yet? The food is a refreshing change and the 2 for 1 Margaritas make for a good time! I ran into Rachel, Nick and Christine out for a cocktail. Gayna’s is now under new ownership. Paxton was kind enough to take photos when he went to bid Gayna adieu. Thanks for the many years of fun! By the way, Paxton, whose bare behind was that? Yours?

Only on Tybee time...I ran into Stan “The Handy Man” out for a cold cerveza. I nearly fell off my barstool when he handed me his business card which read “I’ll show up when I say I can.” The boys of the Brass Anchor were holding down the Combat Zone on a SWELTERING Saturday night. Cheers to Jenny Rose, who recently celebrated her birthday with an awesome boat ride with Queen Roma and friends. Bruce also had a birthday party at the Quarter with a cake that looked just like a pool table. How
appropriate! Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you might run into Rudon trying to dispose of a blow up doll that he found at the Wind Rose. Believe it or not, Elvis was sighted outside of the Sand Bar serenading on the s i d e w a l k . (Danno says he does a mean Marilyn Monroe also!!!) Here’s a KICKER: Catfish finally got a little TRIM! That’s all I have to say about that.

Dr. Hunter S. Thompson said, and I quote, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” Here’s to Jenny of Tybee Time fame for of the deal! The American Legion hosted a benefit for the children of Dawn and Allen Piper, appropriately called
“Dawn’s Backup.” What an incredible turnout and show of love and support from this community! The food was wonderful and

it was standing room only in the entire building. There was live entertainment including Spec Hosti and the All-stars. Jimmy and Claire were there among a multitude of others to show their respect.
What a great day for a great cause. I would let this photo of Donald Wayne speak for itself, but I know how you people think. Donald Wayne is donating 10” of hair to the Locks of Love. Guys and Dolls who are donating, please let me know so I can document your progress! Sorry, I had to bring this photo in to remind you people the dangers of Jack Daniels. Joe has been missing for 6 months now, but his spirit is here to remind you of what Jack can do for YOU! Have a great month and let us know about anything juicy going on as long as it doesn’t include any of us!!! If anything else happens, we’re all ears!!! Always remember, if you can’t laugh at yourself. . .
