Keeping It Real Meet Don Ernst, the 27 year old, new to Tybee Don Ernst. He just bought the Subway on Tybee and there have been some changes to say the least! Don has worked for the Subway corporation for the last 4 years. He was quickly promoted to manager and managed the Subway in Savannah, and the one at Wal-Mart, before he decided that he was interested in owning a franchise. After training with Subway, he landed out here on Tybee, and you will be able to notice the changes the moment you walk in the door! Don is big on having friendly customer service, a clean restaurant, quality and freshness are number one on his list, he has brought back the famous $5 footlongs, and most importantly... Subway prices are back. Oh, and did I mention it was clean?! Stop by and meet Don, take in the ad on this page and he’ll give you a free fresh cookie! Marlin Monroe’s is the place to be on Sunday’s for the pig roasts. Michael Moody is there playing with the ocean as a backdrop, and look at all these trouble makers drinking Mojitos! Stop by the pier with t h e kids, Dizzy Dean h a s added some amusement rides! Starling is the newest member of the Sam Adam’s band, or so she thinks she is, they are kind of enough to let her play a song with them when they see her at Bernie’s. You can watch her video on the Tybee Breeze or the Tybee Church FaceBook page.
Karen Kelly is re-birthing the old Hunter House, and they will open in September or October. It is a Tybee Landmark and has been a inn, hotel & boarding house since the turn of the century. They are naming it the Beach View Bed & Breakfast because in the 50’s it was the Beach View Hotel. Stop by and see the renovations! Well Pirate Fest is almost here, so it is time to get in the mood! Amy Gaster gave pirate names to us. I’m Sassy Sword Sundi & Shannon is Marino the Mariner, but what about Starling & Asti? What’s your pirate name? “Be Breezy... By Michael D. Sullivan, Tybee Guy when the age came… when the age came we were left to dine with most of our lives, that somehow we knew. there in tunic and picnic bib, I saw the very swift in me slower, yet assured, a flow. I saw the dreams in me delicious and not dusty or yellowed. I saw the child in me undressing and holding my face, combing my hair, calling my name in rhyme. I became of the moment, became of the years, became of a kindness in me that I had not met, not touched yet warming and full of my smell. I held all the air in my lungs and breathed to the creation in me, breathed to my soul painted in the sky, fixed to my shadow, suspended in my face, birthing… when the age came, I landscaped, and there all who loved me shared a common table, a common whisper. we dined and reveled and sang. there could be no end, as I would tempt a return.

Hello Tybee! As the dog days of summer are on the down swing we can look forward to Labor Day and some fall weather! Labor Day Beach Bash, sponsored by Tybee Fest on Sunday September 4th, should be a fun time for all! Labor Day Beach Bash will take place on the Tybee Pier and Pavilion from 7-11pm featuring live entertainment by the Swingin’ Medallions and a spectacular fireworks display after dark. The Swingin’ Medallions are known as “The Party Band of the South” and we’re excited to be welcoming them back to Tybee Island for another great performance! Here at the Tybee Island Tourism Council we are busy putting together our new Tybee Island Vacation Planner for 2012/2013 and selling some great advertising opportunities for the TybeeVisit.com website! We’ve gotten several new chamber members who will benefit from having their information in the new Tybee Vacation Planner and on TybeeVisit.com. This is a great opportunity being a member of the Savannah Chamber of Commerce and a Tybee business owner because it gives you the advantage of being on the Savannah Chamber website and for hospitality businesses, VisitSavannah.com, and the Savannah Visitor’s Guide. The Georgia Governor’s Conference on tourism will take place September 11-14 up in Macon, Georgia. The theme of this year’s conference is, “Get Centered!” This is always a great conference with people from all over the state exchanging ideas and discussing challenges in our tourism industry. This year’s topics include: What can the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) do for you, the GDEcD co-op advertising program and Integrated Marketing to Promote Your Destination. An added component of the Georgia Governor’s Conference on Tourism is the addition in recent years of the Techno-Tourism Workshop which focuses on effective, cost efficient technology marketing to lure visitors to destinations and attractions in our state. This year’s Techno-Tourism Workshop will cover measuring the effectiveness of social media, emerging technology applications on the horizon and tourism best practices to include QR codes and augmented reality technology to enhance the visitor’s experience. The Best Pork Roast Ever I was having a conversation with a friend last night about all the things you can do with pig meat (obviously a lengthy chat), anyway I eventually remarked how disappointing a big glamorous piece of meat the crown roast can turn out to be: expensive, hard to handle, and time consuming, with somewhat unpredictable spotty results. She agreed and started pointing out the advantages, or disadvantages, of center loin roast (crown), sirloin roast and 7-rib roast (also known as rib end roast, rib end pork loin, and pork loin end). She called it the “prime rib” of pork. I was soon to learn, that although the former two are more expensive, they contain less fat and connective tissue, and less flavor and moisture than the petite roast. Next time at the market I asked the butcher to cut me a 5 to 7 rib end pork loin with shallow slices between the ribs. He was glad to cut it and it looked great, meaty, fatty, bony and just the right size. I was excited to get cookin’. I had trouble trying to decide how I wanted to cook this baby! I remembered this really most authentic JERK recipe and decided it would be perfecto. Here is the best jerk marinade recipe for the best pork roast. You’ll need: 1/2 cup ground allspice 1/2+ cup brown sugar 6 - 8 garlic loves 4 - 6 scotch bonnet peppers (or equivalent, habanera) seeds left in for the daring 1 tbsp. ground thyme or 2 tbsp. fresh leaves 2 bunches scallions, rough chopped 1/2 tsp. nutmeg Soy sauce to moisten Put everything in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. This will keep “forever” in the fridge. Feel free to increase the garlic, and hot peppers. The recipe doubles and triples really well. Rub about 1/2 cup onto the roast and into the shallow slices. I recommend wearing latex gloves! Marinate overnight. If you are going to grill, use a low fire, wood charcoal is ideal. Turn several times until meat reaches 155 degrees, let stand 10 to 15 minutes before cutting into chops. The meat should be smoky pink and the skin nice and dark. I decided to experiment and roast in the oven (my grill sucks). Pre-heat the oven to 475 degrees. Place roast bone down in a shallow pan, add 1/2 inch of water or chicken stock and place in middle of oven. Roast for about 30 to 40 minutes and check temp. 155 degrees is what you are looking for, cook more if necessary. Once done, let stand for 20 minutes. Serve with sweet potato fries, slaw (like jicama), or grits and fried green tomatoes, or any side of your choice. Remember, this dish is extremely flavorful and aromatic and HOT AS HELL, so have LOTS of Red Stripe Beer! Hope you enjoy, Chef Espy Sighs or Moans ~ chefespy@bellsouth.net

For a town that promotes itself as a better home town, we seem to shoot ourselves in the foot on a regular basis. Let me say this however. Chantel does an excellent job. Period. End of that story. But, tell me how we got into the situation of having a crosswalk, complete with a pedestrian median, on US 80 at a location that scares the crap out of drivers who make that final curve on the eastern end of the divided highway. Hell, we already had a wreck there before the project was even completed. Took out a chunk of curb before the concrete was even cured. I don’t know if a federal grant was involved, but one thing I know about grants is this: When the government doles out money in the form of a grant, they are in your pocket forever. We need to get our do-do together, especially at a time when government on all levels is over spending. And, what about the new bike racks? Can anyone explain to me the reasoning surrounding taking away more parking spaces for this foolishness in an area that is already so short of them? The one at 16th and Butler is a classic example. Here’s a place where folks park, run inside a store to pick up a few items, and then drive off. Where in the devil is the logic! One final thought on “community.” Why is it that the local business people who do so much for this island are somehow made out to be the bad guys. I can name a bunch of them who donate time, energy, and money for worthwhile causes and who don’t seek recognition and don’t get any. They are simply branded the enemy. Sounds so much like Obama it isn’t funny. Let’s make it a point to get back our home town pride. Screw the turtles. Let’s light up the south end and have a party. After all, this is a people island. are ready at the pharmacy than you get from friends wanting to get together for some fun. I’ve been sitting around thinking about what I like and don’t like. I don’t like to see people getting licked in the face by a dog. Ewww. I’ve seen where that tongue has been. Bleh! I don’t like seeing the In the summer when it’s really too hot to be really KFC commercial that has that guy with his hairy arms all productive, I just sit in the flour thats supposed to give the chicken its special and think. Well, “je ne sais quoi.” I hate to think that’s one of the secret sometimes, I just sit. herbs or spices. I don’t understand why radio stations play the Thinking can be hard work. Anyway, all these same group of songs over and over and over. And random things just pop usually they’re the songs I didn’t ever like when they into my head. Maybe were supposed to be hits. For crying out loud, there are all the great ideas and millions of songs to choose from. Heck, throw in a Frank inventions started this Sinatra and shake everybody up. Speaking of which. way. Like on a really hot night Why isn’t there a big band/Frank Sinatra/Johnny Mercer when Ben Franklin went out to type FM radio station anymore? That might help with all cool off in the rain and got struck by lightning. Or the road rage or at least calm my nerves since the traffic maybe when Edison got up during a really steamy hot (as you know) has been really irritating me this summer. Speaking of traffic (again). When I hear a traffic August night and tripped on something in the dark and report on the news that mentions a road closure, a mile thought why don’t I invent a light bulb. I’ve discovered a new sign to tell you that you’re marker, or an exit by number, that doesn’t help me one getting older. That’s when you get more calls confirming bit. For goodness sakes, tell me the name of the road or doctor and dental appointments or telling you your scripts where it goes. Telling me there’s a wreck at exit number 24 means nothing to me. What’s that the exit to?? It took me years to learn that Hwy 204 is Abercorn Extension out toward north Jacksonville. I’ve had a great idea for an addition to all tests that anyone must take for a driver’s license, a job, or even admission into college. DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMON SENSE? A simple YES/NO question. If the applicant cannot answer YES, then no license, no job, no school. Okay. I know everybody THINKS they have common sense, so it’s common sense that that question wouldn’t work. Did you notice that we don’t have four seasons anymore? There are only two: summer and winter. So, let’s just come up with new terms for our two seasons. How about sprummer and flinter? And finally, since I’m dreaming up new vocabulary, I’d like to share with you a term coined by some friends of mine to describe some of the tourists they have run into. Tourons. Those would be tourists who do not have the aforementioned common sense and behave like MORONS. (Please be advised that all tourists are not morons and all morons are not tourists.) I’d like to add the following terms: Bikerons, Walkerons, Joggerons. No translations needed. Right? So til next month, stay cool and be ever grateful to the person who in a flash of genius when he was sitting and thinking came up with the idea for air conditioning.

“Peaceful Journey” By Carolyn Jurick
On behalf of the Tybee Island Charter School, I would like to thank the citizens of Tybee for their support as we try to get a school on Tybee. As most of you know, we pulled the petition from going to the board, which puts off the beginning of the school for another year. Most of the problems with the petition could have been fixed within a two week extension. Two problems that could not have been fixed were the facility and the finances. We are anxiously waiting to hear what the problem with the facility is. It was stated in the letter from Savannah-Chatham County Public School System that the facility wasn’t adequate. We thought that perhaps the problem was having too many grades. We asked for fewer grades, but we are still being told that the facility is not adequate. We are asking for details as to why the facility isn’t adequate. We expect to have that information by August 15. We need a bigger grassroots effort from Tybee for fundraising for the school as we prepare a petition that will be accepted by the Savannah Chatham Public School System. We need to show we have support from Tybee in every way possible. The expenses so far for the school have totaled over $1500. These expenses include: incorporation, application for a non-profit organization, legal fees, and copying of petitions, binders and cd’s for the Savannah-Chatham School System in March and again in May. If you are interested in helping, receiving information, making contributions, or if you have ideas for fundraisers, etc., please contact us at tybeeislandcharterschool@comcast.net or Tybee Island Charter School, 1105 Laurel Avenue, Tybee Island, GA 31328. Parents -- if you are interested in having your children attend the school, please get involved. We need you! It will be a quality public school which will focus on environmental and biological education.
Thank you.

Samuel Adams and I were having lunch at my house. Dedra and Rebekah were with us and we were working on Bar Church over lunch…meaning that we are excited about the Sunday morning service at the Windrose on Tybee every Sunday at 10:30. It is an incredible worship experience for those of us who can use a little more … church. It’s in a bar with votive candles with good live music. And the community of believers … well … they are something. The core value that binds the believers is … “I screwed up … you screwed up … God loves us anyway … so let’s love each other … which is what God said to do in the first place.” After all … God is love. And if we want God… then we dive into love. So we’re sitting here working on logos and messaging and wondering why Julia is part of this when we take a break. I grab a beer and walk outside on my deck which is a peaceful place for me. A block away is a sad little holy dock that keeps me grounded. And there is this dog, Goddess … named after God … who loves me unconditionally. It’s been hotter than hell for days on end. Yet I sit. Here and there are clouds … thunders claps in the distance … salt hangs in the air … the ocean sings over there. Staring at a thousand shades of green, I look inside of the house and they are all still excitedly working over Bar Church. I sit here listening to the choirs of birds singing hymns, the kisses of God in the breeze, and the love of friends inside. It’s as holy as it gets. Take a moment today and be kissed by God. You gotta stop and be quiet and still for moment. Give yourself to that moment. Then you can deal with whatev’s. See you at Bar Church. Micheal Elliott, M.Div., M.S.W. SEA TURTLE RELEASE AUGUST 4TH AT THE TYBEE PIER FROM 1-3p! The time has finally come for the Burton 4H Center to release our loggerhead sea turtle, Clover. We are SO excited that everyone rallied around Clover to get her a satellite transmitter. All of the donation buckets around town brought in close to $600! The rest was raised at our Open Houses and by generous donations from local businesses. We really want to thank everyone for your overwhelming support. It’s humbling to see the community come together so we can track a Tybee turtle! To the best of my knowledge, this will be the first time that a sea turtle born on Tybee will be tracked. By the time this article is published Clover will have a transmitter attached to her carapace (her top shell). This transmitter will GPS her location while she travels in the Atlantic. We are anticipating that it will keep track of her for approximately one year. As Clover travels, her GPS locations will be automatically uploaded on www.seaturtle.org. Anyone can visit the website and click on “Track a Turtle” and find the link for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (who is graciously allowing Clover to be on their page) and find Clover’s name. You will see a map of the east coast, along with GPS locations showing when and where Clover has travelled. We are hoping that her release and tracking her will provide a tremendous and unique opportunity for sea turtle education and conservation. Since the website is public, anyone in the world can view her movements and use that information to educate others about the sea turtle life cycle and how we can help protect them from harm. d`Estaing anchored off Tybee for two months during the siege of Savannah by the French and American forces. In the War Between the States, Federal troops erected batteries here for the reduction of nearby Fort Pulaski. Troops were trained on Tybee Island during both World Wars. Erected: 1958 by Georgia Historical Commission. (Marker Number 025-62.) Location: 32° 1.307′ N, 80° 50.664′ W. Marker is in Tybee Island, Georgia, in Chatham County. Marker is on Meddin Drive, on the right when traveling north. Located at Fort Screven parking lot opposite the Tybee Island Lighthouse. The Georgia Historical Commission was an organization created by the U.S. state of Georgia for purposes of historic preservation. The Georgia legislature created the commission in February 1951 to promote and increase knowledge and understanding of the history of Georgia. The commission also gained national recognition as a pioneer in state historic preservation. The commission’s other major work was erecting some 1,800 historical markers. In 1973, Governor Jimmy Carter’s governmental reorganization dissolved the 22 years old commission. The successful agency’s dissolution has caused controversy and bitterness on the works but much of commission’s work has remained as the Department of Natural Resources took over the commission’s functions and maintains most of the sites and museums, and the Georgia Historical Society took over the marker program. The responsibility of maintaining several sites now belongs to local groups.

Inscription: Tybee Island was named by the Indians who came from the interior to hunt and fish. Settled since the beginning of the colony of Georgia, it was the scene in 1775 of the first capture by the first Provincial vessel commissioned by any Congress in America for naval warfare in the Revolution, when a Georgia schooner captured an armed British vessel laden with military stores. In 1776 the royal Governor, Sir James Wright, broke his parol [sic] and escaped to a British man of war in Tybee Roads. The Council of Safety ordered all Tybee houses sheltering British officers and Tories destroyed and a raid on the Island by the Patriot forces accomplished this purpose. In 1779 a large French fleet under Count
Renee’ DeRossett and Kim Trammell brought The Wizard of Oz to Tybee Island, and the play was a huge success! This was a great play for the whole family to see! Glory Padgett played Dorothy and she was fantastic! The Wicked Witch was played by Kim, the Cowardly Lion by Renee’, the Scarecrow by Adam Rich, the Tin Man by Bob Fulton, Glinda the Good Witch by Christy Wilson, Toto by Poppy Shumpka, and Burke Day played the Wizard of Oz; all gave fantastic performances. Tybee truly has got talent.

Mayor’s Report for 1908, Part 1
At its meeting of July 9, 1909, Mayor Lovell long achievement report several articles back.] I know many of you readers are wondering presented his annual report to Council on Town why Council and I go on and on with such a trivial accomplishments during the preceding year. “As usual our year’s work started with matter as sidewalks. I can explain. Maybe. First we need all to be reminded that in repairing plank walks, those at Estill Station [vicinity of Hwy 80 and Byers Street] being first put in order, 1908 the road to Tybee was still 15 years off, almost then Tilton Avenue [one block north of Hwy 80 which everyone came and left Tybee on the train, and very was called 1st Street in those days – and still is by few if any cars would have been on the island. If some. Tilton Ave is no longer in existence], First, you wanted to go to the beach, see a friend, buy Second, Eighth, Seventeenth Streets, Inlet both food, go to the club, church, dance, or an exciting wings [don’t know what this means] of Chatham Council meeting and you didn’t have a horse, Avenue. The walk in rear of the Colony [?] was bike, or wheeled cart, you walked. And with no air practically rebuilt, and the walks on Inlet Ave and conditioning and most people there in the summer, Chatham Ave West required considerable work. On you did not stay inside; you went out - and walked. Seventeenth Street we took up 465 ft of the plank Thus walkways were very important and the Town walk, replacing it with a 3 foot wide cinder walk, worked very hard keeping them up. Second, as I’ve complained in past articles which was later covered with gravel. “By decision of Council, 15th St. was opened and promised to stop (I lied), Clerk of Council F.T. from Main St to the beach, a distance of 881 ft. Storer’s penmanship is terrible and only gets worse From Main St. was put down 384 ft of gravel walk as he ages. I don’t know what he is writing until I 8 ft wide, and 497 feet of board walk 7 ft wide. To have spent a great deal of time deciphering enough the cost of this walk, $100 was contributed by Hotel words to make sense of what he’s talking about, which sends me back to change some of the earlier Tybee. “From 15th St Walk, South to the board walk words I had guessed at. After all this effort, I’m not through Bohans south end property, we built a 7 ft about to not use what I have discovered, even if Plank Walk, connecting Hotel Tybee and South End some of it is tres boring. We’ll continue with Mayor Lovell’s exciting Hotel, a distance of 360 ft. This work was built on the strand and the entire cost was paid by Hotel report next month. Tybee and South End Hotel, with the understanding Bernie Goode has been writing for the Breeze for four years. it was to be the property of the Town of Tybee. Readers with questions or comments are encouraged to write “A 5 ft gravel walk 1513 ft long was put Bernie at berniegoode@gmail.com down on Main Street connecting northward with the gravel walk ending just South of the Fresh Air Home. Dear Fran, I like that little rescue island Tybee has put in the middle of Highway 80 close to all the shops and the Miley Church. I do have one suggestion. I think somebody needs to put a little bench on that thing because just about nobody will stop to let the poor stranded people get across the other two lanes. Just saying, Safety Conscious Dear Safety, Interesting idea. How about a little water cooler too? That new pedestrian cross was really needed, but I’m holding my breath just waiting to see how it works. I think a stop light at Byers and Hwy 80 should be next. Drive safely, Fran Dear Fran, Is it okay to feed a barking dog gum or taffy to try to glue his mouth shut? My neighbor leaves for a while and his dog barks the whole time he’s gone. I can’t take it much longer. HELP! Big Bow Wow Dear BBW, It’s worth a try. But have you thought about just how you’re going to get to the dog and how you’re going to offer him those chewy treats and if you’ll be trespassing and if you’ll come away with all your appendages still attached? Trying to help, Fran Dear Fran, Why are those things called Pedi cabs? Why aren’t they called Bikey cabs? Curious, Blonde N. Proud Dear Blonde, Really? Are you truly asking me this? Well, actually, I don’t know for sure. BUT, I think it has to do with PEDALS, and feet, as in you pedal a bike which involves using your feet. You know, kinda like when you get a pedicure. Fat Tire and Optimus Prime By Alaina Loughridge So I am sitting on my front porch with a couple of friends. It was late. Beer in hand. All of a sudden I hear BeeGee say “What in the name of all that is holy is that?” I turn my head to see Optimus Prime coming down 14th Street! Whaaaat? An apparition of jaw dropping proportion is cruising the boulevard. 10 people are pedaling their happy butts down the road…. On the same machine! There is a bar in the middle of them. RIGHT ON!!! Exercise and alcohol! One of my favorite things!! Optimus Prime or Savannah Slow Ride is the brain child of Samantha Meier and her hubby Keith Snyder. Sam was in Milwaukee, WI and saw O.P driving down the avenue. Right then and there she decided she wanted that. Thankfully, Keith is an engineer. Between the two of them Savannah Slow Ride was created. What you’re looking at is 10 pedal spots with 5 non-pedal spots (so totally disabled person friendly). You got yourself a sober driver that steers and breaks. Between the cycling seats is a bar. Need a bartender? Got your back. Just bring booze and you will get a fabulous scenic tour around the south end, a kick butt sound system, and just a really good time. Savannah Slow Ride is not just about booze though. It is an excellent opportunity to get your butt out and about. See some island and get your heart rate above 10. You can hire them privately or hop on solo. Planning a church outing or bachelorette party? Done. You want to decorate The Prime? Sure. Optimus (which I totally stole from someone on my front porch when this apparition of fabulousness appeared out of the darkness) is based in Savannah, but can be located at Fat Tire Bikes. Fat Tire is owned and operated by Jason Dubuque. Situated on the cornerish of 14th & Butler, Fat Tire offers sales, rentals, and repairs of bikes. They also have scooter rentals at a very reasonable price. Need a fat beach cruiser? Cup holder? Bike lock? Accoutrements & sundries? Got you! Open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm you can get tired up (in a good way:) More information is available on both Savannah Slow Ride and Fat Tire on FaceBook. Lacking a computer? Stop by Fat Tire and Jason will hold your hand and help you out. Lazy, but have a telephone? Slow Ride can be reached at 912-414-5634. Fat Tire at 912-786-4013. Either or, they can get you on the road in style. Whether you be lazy or Tour De France you are guaranteed to have a good time whether you want to or not!

Tybee here we come… Several times we have had regular guests that get the “Tybee Fever” and the end result is that they move here. It’s happened again and we will welcome Tamara and Emily to our friendly island the end of this month. Tybee Marine Rescue Mission Reports By Joey Solomon Public Information Officer
June - July Boat taking on water on Little Tybee. Mission Type: Scramble
This was a typical scramble mission, almost dark and lots of confusion. It didn’t help that within 2 minutes of scrambling us they also dispatched the Fire Dept. Rescue Boat for a swimmer stranded on the bar on the south end. Keeping focused on our task we had a boat on scene within minutes and picked 2 adults and 3 children out of the surf about half way to Wassaw sound. With the incoming tide our “seasoned” Capt. was able to find the gap in the breakers in darkness and bring everyone home via “the ditch” and not take the beating required to enter Wassaw sound. Everyone was back to the Crab Shack in a little over an hour. When asked about the boat Capt. Lex replied, “don’t know….never saw it.” That should have been the end of this story… But I have to tell the “rest” of the story. The next day Lex was contacted by the boat owner looking for a ride back to his craft, and explained that “none of the commercial assistance companies could respond on this tide this morning,” and he needed desperately to retrieve some gear abandoned in the wreckage. He didn’t mind waiting a couple of days to retrieve it, but he needed to retrieve some valuables he hoped he could find. Lex put his afternoon on hold and returned in daylight to find the boat. After finding it the owner quickly opened a compartment and began cheering… Both of their wedding rings were SAFE! They had removed them to enjoy swimming with their kids. Nice job Lex… you made us look good again!!!!!

at night. You would be surprised to see how bright a television is from the beach. Flashlights on the beach at night are not only a huge deterrent for nesting females, but also a disturbance to hatchlings as they emerge from the nest and head to towards the ocean. Even the smallest light from a flashlight can cause a hatchling to turn and crawl in a direction away from the ocean. Using a red filtered flashlight will reduce the light pollution on the beach. A red filtered flashlight can be purchased or made by coloring the lens of a regular flashlight with a red Sharpie marker. You will need to color several layers to make sure the lens is dark enough. What else can you do to help our turtles? After you visit the beach, clean up your area. This involves taking with you all the items you brought to the beach with you. Including canopy tents, beach chairs and umbrellas. A nesting female was disturbed this season with debris left on the beach near 2nd Avenue. When you leave the beach make sure to flatten any sand castles you built or fill any holes you dug. These obstacles cab cause a female to abort nesting or a hatchling to become stuck on its journey. Please also pick up your trash! Trash left on the beach will possibly end up in the ocean where it can become a “food” item for sea creatures including our beloved sea turtles.
Wow! What a tremendous sea turtle season we are having this year. At the time of writing, there are 1,693 sea turtle nests along the Georgia coast. The 2010 season brought the highest year on record with 1,771 nests total. We very well could suppress that amount by the time nesting ends towards the end of August. Tybee is having a high season so far. To date we have seven loggerhead sea turtle nests. This amount is more than double the amount of nests we had by the end of June last year. Mid July through the first of August tends to be a busy nesting time for us. I expect to see our nest totals increase by the time females complete nesting by the end of August. Tybee’s first nest was laid on May 25 and should begin hatching by the third week in July. By the end of July, nest two and three should reach their hatching window. The average incubation period is 50-60 days. With the high temperatures we have had, the incubation period could be shorter. Only July 7, a loggerhead sea turtle crawl was discovered under the Tybee pier! This was exciting to us because the pier is usually avoided by nesting females due to light issues and activities around the pier. During the off season, the Chatham County Parks and Recreation Department installed turtle friendly lighting on the pier. In addition to those lights, the large, bright, overhead lights have been turned off during the sea turtle season. The season runs from May 1 to October 31. Although the female that visited the area in early July did not leave any eggs, this visit shows that the light changes made at the pier have had an effect on darkening our beach. Darkening the beach on Tybee is a goal of the Tybee Sea Turtle Project. There are several ways that residents and visitors can help reach that goal. Turn off all outside lighting, including porch lights and landscape lighting, especially if you are located near the beach side of the island. Adventures of Steve & Jan Fox June 1, 2011 - Our next stop was at a KOA in Rock Island, IL. Rock Island is near the northwest corner of the state. The campground had a nice pool and hot tub and, although it rained, we relaxed a bit, did the final repairs on the RV leak, and loaded up on supplies. A camper there had one of the original GMC class A RVs. GM stopped making these well over twenty years ago. This one had residential size appliances inside and the entertainment center had a small reel to reel player. It’s pretty cool that, although definitely? We passed through a number of large farms on the way to Amana, IA, our current stop. On one stretch of a few miles, windmills had been erected to power the farms. It was nice to see innovation being used. Each farm had from two to four windmills. We passed another large wind farm closer to Amana that powers more than 30,000 homes according to the literature I read. Although in reality only a small percentage, it seemed that quite a bit of farm land was under water from all of the storms and snow melt in this part of the country. Most of this land had been plowed and seeded (mainly with corn) before being submerged. T h e campground is part of a sixty acre relatively flat field, mostly unused. There is a lot of room and a lot of grass. Molly spent much of the afternoon outside after we arrived. A field in the distance has a windmill (the old fashioned kind) and pasture and is a great view. We have fairly high speed internet as a bonus. Overall, the campground is perfect.
Amana was settled by mostly German religious refugees from New York in the mid 1800s as a commune of sorts. The members set up a number of businesses (meat and smoke shop, general stores, blacksmith shop, furniture and carpentry shop, wineries, mills, and such). Some still are in operation and many of the original buildings remain. Amana actually is called the Amana colonies and consists of seven different villages connected by a 17 mile loop. We visited part of one today and will see three others tomorrow before leaving for our next destination. Amana also is home for the Amana (now Whirlpool) appliance factory.

June 8, 2011 - Our next stop was an RV park in Clear Creek, MN. There were a lot of high winds and the drive there was slow going. The park was just ok. With the wind and rain, we never put out our awning and had to do all of our cooking indoors. We stayed two days and spent part of one visiting the town, which is next to a large and quite beautiful lake. From there we stayed three nights at the very nice KOA just outside of Jordan, MN, which is about 30 miles south of Minneapolis/St. Paul, passing two more wind farms and lots of large farms on the way. The drive was quite scenic but, as we have found in much of MN and preceding states, the roads are in rough shape. We were very impressed with Minneapolis. The skyline is beautiful, the city is clean, and there are quite a number of bicyclers and joggers. We walked the Stone Arch Bridge, which was a railroad bridge built in the 1800s that served Burlington Northern trains until the mid 1960s. The city has preserved it as a walking, jogging, riding path and it offers a great view of the Mississippi and some of the old flour mills that were located in the area. There is a man made waterfall of about 20 feet adjacent to the start of the bridge. It was built to power turbines, which provided all of the power to run the mills (no outside power sources were needed). The mill business was very competitive and there were 20 of various sizes at one point or another. The three major mills were General Mills, Pillsbury, and Gold Medal (once the largest flour mill in the world). All had multiple and immense grain silos. The Gold Medal mill was destroyed in a fire in the mid-sixties, though the silos remain intact. The offices and other buildings have since been converted to lofts. The Pillsbury mill was on the other side of the river (and is relatively intact), so I imagine there was a lot of competition between the two. The General Mills building is no longer visible. If you are interested in more info you can visit this site: http://www. millcitymuseum.org/museum-minneapolis-riverfront. Hydro electric power generation has since been added to the falls. We also saw the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, which is owned and operated by the University of MN. This is the most immense garden we have ever seen, comprising more than 1,000 acres.
There is a three mile road that passes most of the gardens along with more than twelve miles of hiking/ bicycling paths, a research library, study and meeting facilities, and more. They
No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze
had a tram that traveled the road, so we bought tickets. The driver gave a great presentation. The photo above shows a garden built above a building to catch and use rain runoff. For you Monty Python fans, they did have a small group of Larches. Our last visit was to the Science Museum in St. Paul, where the King Tut exhibit is currently on display. It included artifacts from a number of Pharaohs and other dignitaries taken from tombs over the years spread across three rooms and ended with three rooms of Tut artifacts from his tomb. Jan and I have wanted to see this exhibit for a long time but, while interesting, we were disappointed that more artifacts weren’t there to see. Driving back we passed an area of lofts and apartments that we designated Yuppyville, where everyone is a rebel but everything is the same. Some of the stranger museums we have had the opportunity to see but haven’t (due to distance and/ or weather) include: National Museum of Surveying in Springfield, IL; Grout Museum in Waterloo, Iowa; Spam Museum in Austin, MN (Monty Python fans should look this up on the web); The temperature reached 102 degrees yesterday in Minneapolis, the highest temperature in 28 years. The humidity is fairly low, however. The record was the talk of the day all over the radio and television. If only they knew how hot in can get on Tybee . . . We left the KOA this morning and, after an oil change in our RV, traveled over some pretty beat up roads to the Lake Shore RV Park in Ortonville, MN, which is on Big Stone Lake and is close to the border with South Dakota. This is a nice, rural park with lots of room. Our site is about 40 yards from the Big Stone Lake and we have a great view. The north end of the lake is on the north-south continental divide. The land in this area has boulders scattered here and there. In a few spots there are areas where rock outcroppings protrude from the land. I am not sure what prehistoric developments produced these but they seem to be just in this one area of MN. I was hoping to go to the Big Stone Lake State Park for some hiking and boulder research, but the rain prevented it. We have encountered rain at least half of the days we have spent on this road trip, so hiking and bicycling have been pretty limited so far. June 11, 2011 - We arrived at Indian Creek State Park in Mobridge, SD this afternoon. Our site is close to the lake and we have lots of room. We will be here until Monday, and then it’s off to the Sturgis area for an extended stay.
No One Covers Tybee Like The Breeze
The weather cleared as we traveled but it is supposed to rain the next three days. I will get some hiking in if weather permits. There are railroad tracks nearby and can hear the occasional train. We have been lucky in that many of the places we have stayed so far are close to active tracks. The drive here was interesting. There was a lot of farm land but, unlike the parts of Iowa and Minnesota we have traveled so far, most were dairies and ranches. As we have seen before, there has been a lot of rain and runoff and some of the land is under water. Creeks and lakes appear to be full and we passed by one area where most of the houses, barns, and outbuildings were flooded on their first floor. The water appeared to be as much as three or four feet above door level. Fortunately, it wasn’t a very populated area and comprised maybe thirty or forty buildings. Still, it was a shame that this sort of thing happens. Also fortunately, some of the buildings were on somewhat higher ground, although the water was pretty close to intruding on them as well. We also passed some areas where the trees were all dead, we think from the roots being submerged in water. We also passed by three ethanol refineries. They are pretty small as refineries go – grain (corn) silos, smaller than expected buildings to refine in, and lots of train cars to carry the product and waste away. A number of gas stations sell E-85 (85% ethanol fuel) in addition to regular gas. The E-85 is priced $.80 to $1.00 less than regular, so our tax dollars are apparently subsidizing the difference. Most stations in the mid-west sell mid-grade with 10% ethanol and regular without, probably for farm machinery that doesn’t tolerate ethanol well. The ethanol is always less expensive. More subsidies? We encountered road construction a mile short of Roscoe and had to take a not very well marked detour. The detour consisted of 5 miles on a dirt county road, 4 miles on another dirt county road, and five miles on a paved county road. We have passed by other dirt roads as well. Apparently, they don’t pave a lot of their roads in SD. Many parking lots are dirt as well, so that seems to be the norm here. A fishing tournament finished today here at the park and there are lots of boats and lots of fish. Jan cooked some steaks over a camp fire for dinner and they were great. June 12, 2011 - It turned out to be a pretty nice day today. I hiked the paths and Jan rearranged everything in the RV and the Element. The one problem with traveling in a small RV is that things can get cluttered pretty fast, so arrangement is an ongoing process. The wind blowing the prairie grass in the hills looks much like waves in the ocean. It’s really beautiful. We hope all is well with you and I will send another update soon. Steve and Jan Tybee Breeze

Here it is August and it’s been a great summer so far. For the Legion this is also when we start reminding everyone that it’s membership renewal time. Our new Legion year began July first, so try to take care of your renewal the next time you’re in the Post. For those of you who may not know, American Legion membership is open to any veteran who has served during a time of conflict. Becoming a Legionnaire gives us more ways to continue “Serving America.” We work closely with the VA’s Voluntary Services Program; assist needy children and families; and we assist deserving high school students with scholarship funds. There are also Americanism Programs such as; Boys/Girls State; high school oratorical competitions; and flag education. Here at Tybee we are actively participating in the project for the “Tybee Island, Circle of Freedom” Veteran’s War Memorial which is a tribute to all veteran’s who gave their lives for the American ideals of Justice, Freedom, Democracy and Loyalty. For the past fifty years we’ve had an annual
Easter egg hunt for kids on the Island, and the great steak dinners on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. If you aren’t a veteran you can still belong by joining the Sons of the American Legion, or Auxiliary, if an immediate member of your family was a veteran. We continue to look for new members. If you’re interested in the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary or Sons of the Legion call the Post (786-5356) for information. Bingo is on Fridays at 8pm. Cards go on sale at 7:15pm. Horseshoes will be Saturday evenings at 7pm with sign-in starting at 6:30. Both events are open to the public and everyone is invited to participate. The Legion and Auxiliary meet on the second Monday of the month, with social hour (and food) starting at 6pm and the meeting at 7pm. The Sons of the Legion meet on the third Monday at 7pm. As always, Linda or Patti will have the canteen open at 5pm every day except Sunday. We close on Sundays unless there is a special event.
Hello Auxiliary Members and Breeze readers. What a month! And Post 154 extends a HUGH THANK YOU to Past President Kaye Dowell, Past Secretary Belinda Flanagan, and Second Vice President Marlene Tomlinson, for their many accomplishments and the strides our auxiliary has made under their leadership. And we will have many more good times. The new officers were installed and they are Liz Lee President, First Vice President Anita Woodward, Second Vice President Debbie Motes, Secretary Mimi Pinner, Treasure Lynn Marston, Sergeant at Arms Lillian Brown and

Tybee’s French Connection By Bonnie Nesbitt It all began 25 years ago when Bonnie and Larry Nesbitt responded to a newspaper article asking for North Carolina families to host French students for a summer. Xavier Lievre, 17, spent a summer with them and their 3 children, who were 16, 7 and 4, in Charlotte, NC. Through the years, they exchanged Christmas notes and gifts. The Nesbitt children became adults and so did Xavier. Last October, Bonnie and Larry headed to Europe with four Tybee friends; the last stop for the Nesbitts was Paris. They stayed with Xavier’s family; Sophie (his wife), and three children, Thomas (pronounced Toma), 12, Eduard, 10, and Violette, 6. The Lievre’s live in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower and according to the Nesbitts it is a view that can only be matched by those we all love on Tybee Island. The Lievres showed the Nesbitts Paris in a way that only Tybeeans can show-off Tybee! It was an experience they will never forget. They had a wonderful reunion and there was a special connection between the two families.
THE LIGHTHOUSE! Tybee’s own Paul Jackson, whose grandfather was the last keeper of the lighthouse, gave the Nesbitts and the Lievres a tour of the lighthouse and Head Lightkeeper’s Cottage like only someone who lived there could! FIREWORKS! Of course, Thomas already knew the meaning of the Fourth of July...the French stood with us during the Revolutionary War. FISHING! Thomas earned the nickname Sharkie...the other Nesbitt grandsons are known as Sting Ray, Polliwog and Jellyfish. ANIMALS! The ones on Oatland Island, that is! All of the Nesbitts and Thomas headed to that lesser known Jekyll Island’s water park, Kennedy Space Center and to witness the last Space Shuttle Launch. When asked about his trip to the States, Sharkie, aka Thomas, said that the Shuttle Launch and Surf Camp will always be special memories. The Nesbitts want to thank all of their Tybee friends and everyone else who made this a special memory for Thomas Lievre. The Nesbitts look forward to the promised visit by the entire Lievre family to Tybee. Tybee Island and all of the Nesbitts look forward to the next chapter of this French Connection.
But, it doesn’t end there! June 25, Xavier brought his 12-year old son, Thomas, for a visit with the Nesbitts on Tybee. Xavier spent 3 short days on Tybee, reconnecting with the Nesbitt’s oldest son, Michael, who is now 41. Xavier returned to Paris, where he and his wife are both attorneys, and left his son Thomas to enjoy 2 weeks with his American, and now, Tybee “family.” Two of the Nesbitt grandsons, John, 10, and Joey, 6, were on island to welcome their new French “brother.” The Nesbitt’s other son and his wife, Rob and Amanda of Huntersville, NC, added to the celebration by coming for the 4th of July weekend. So how do the Nesbitts show off Tybee and our great American neck-of-the-woods? SURFING! Thomas and John are now surfers, thanks to the Tybee YMCA Surf Camp. Bonnie and Larry were very impressed with the counselors and instructors who, amazingly, had more than 30 campers all surfing by the end of the week!

The people are here, and they are strolling and shopping well into the evenings; so we’re here to make their destination a little more pleasurable - albeit, culinary or visual art; everyone wants a little “Local FLAIR!” Facing the challenges of being a caregiver for a loved one is never easy; especially when trying to run a small business - not to mention making an effort to be creative and productive, too! It has been difficult, these past few years; serious illness in this writer/artist/proprietor’s family - coupled with the GREAT Recession - a double whammy that couldn’t have culminated at a more inopportune time! Always delighted to see our locals, as well as new and faithful patrons (season after season) for thirteen years - we never throw anybody out! And boy, are our Artists prepared - bring in on, ya’ll! Leo (July 23 - August 22) You’ll find a penny when you are out for a walk. Surprisingly, it will be the key to a wonderful change in your life. The trick is to figure out what you can do with a penny, these days. Virgo (August 23 - September 22) If a little bit is good, wouldn’t more be better? And wouldn’t lots be absolutely brilliant? Maybe. But before you dive overboard, make sure a solid, grounded friend is on deck. Libra (September 23 - October 22) Your antennae are twitching like mad & you have the feeling there’s something going on that you haven’t been made privy to. Do some digging, figure it out. Bet you’re right. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) You’re not ordinarily prone to bouts of melancholy, but you may feel a bit blue now. Your options are to give into it, or ignore it and move on. Choose the quicker of the two. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) You will discover a way to have your cake and eat it too! Unfortunately, everyone else will think that’s really disgusting. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) You’re quite tempted to either invite a dear one to visit, or hop on a plane or train yourself. How about a scenery change? If it feels right, don’t hesitate. You need a break. Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) Get ready to laugh, frolic and carry on at length; regardless of what’s on the agenda. How could you possibly be concerned about sleep when there’s fun to be had? Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Convincing others to do your bidding won’t be tough -- but getting them to stop trying to anticipate your every wish might be. If you’re not sure about the long-term prospects for this relationship, be fair. Don’t toy with them. Aries (March 21 - April 19) Secret society day. Don’t join -- no matter how much you like the secret handshake. Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Today you will find that you can make an incredibly silly sound, and will spend the entire day making it, and then laughing. You are at a turning point in your life. Turn left.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20) A jovial, outgoing friend will say or do something quite impulsive -- something that will knock your socks off. Wipe the tears of laughter from your ordinarily stoic eyes and remember your motto: Just the facts, ma’am. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Someone who’s just perfect -- for your purposes, at least -will cross paths with you soon. They’ll be so perfect that you may even feel the need to tell them all about it. Good idea. Just be sure they’re also available. Tybee Breeze
